The Past Future – 2002 Ducati MH900e

It was a long time ago – and a long time coming – but the spectacle of The Year 2000 loomed large during the final minutes of the last century. This was the future date by when we would have flying cars, personal jetpacks, and robotic assistance in every aspect of our lives. The same year also promised catastrophic failures across any number of computer and infrastructure systems in the form of the Y2K bug. Looking back it is laughable that a single New Year’s Day would suddenly encompass all our hopes, dreams, ideals and fears into an isolated event, but it became a momentous milestone all the same. And amid all of the hoopla, Ducati embraced the fad known as the internet to offer a new take on an old classic for sale in an exclusive manner: The MH900e was born.

2002 Ducati MH900e for sale on eBay

Designed by the controversial stylist Pierre Terblanche, the MH900e morphed the traditional Mike Hailwood model DNA into an extremely stylized display. Highly accentuated features such as the aggressive stance, the shotgun pipe high exhaust, asymmetrical shock and single sided swingarm make the bike stand out like none other. You know an MHe when you see it. But not all is for show. The MHe started life as an adaptation of the standard Supersport package, motoring an air-cooled, two-valve, torquey Desmo twin. Brembo brakes, Paioli shock and 43mm upside down forks add to the go side of the equation. The riding position is said to be a bit stretched out, but many MHe examples have seen some reasonable miles, making the show AND go equation work out well.

From the seller:
or your consideration is a rare Ducati MH900E ( # 1587) of which only 2000 were produced world wide. These were sold online and first available to order at 12:01 1/1/2000. They sold fast and are a combination of old and new design.

This is truly a special low production bike. Often referred to as the most beautiful motorcycle ever built. The bike has just 1306 mile in 20 years. It has been run regularly and maintained to the highest degree. Belt service preformed 2 miles ago last week as well as valve adjustment. I’m the second owner and both myself and the original own have kept the bike in a climate controlled storage. The batteries and all bulbs just replaced as have the plastic fuel line connectors with new metal connectors. The OEM connectors have a tendency to crack with age. The bike runs like a champ and sounds awesome. I have the things you see in the pics that came with the bike. Clean title is in my name. Feel free to come inspect the bike if you wish or ask any questions. Bike is all original except for the service items mentioned. Not original is the carbon fiber chain guard. The previous owner had a mishap with the bike stand cracking the chain guard and scratched the swing arm that has been touched up with exact color match could wet sand if you wanted but you will not see it unless you know it’s there. The emissions box has been removed but is included and is simple to reinstall. Bike recently ceramic coated and looks great. Original tool kit and cover included.

The seller has included a cold start video which can be seen here:

Sold only through the internet and with all 2000 units sold out in short order, the MH900e was only ever destined to be a collector bike. As such, we see these bikes turn up from time to time, always in immaculate condition, and – more often than not – with fewer miles than most other banner bikes. Today’s example looks well loved and clean, has a very modest number of miles on the clock (1,306), and is nicely photographed. Pricing – at $30k or best offer in a Buy It Now format – is pretty much on the money for what is being asked with similar examples. You can check out all of the details here, and Good Luck!!

Offering what is – today – perhaps one of the most unique, stunning and collection-worthy motorcycles available, Ducati created a media storm by offering the re-imagined Mike Hailwood replica to internet-only buyers in the wee hours of the year 2000 (the first lot of 1,000 which subsequently sold out in minutes). Dubbed the Ducati MH900e (the “e” stood for Evoluzion), many consider this bike the greatest stroke of pen from oft-maligned designer Pierre Terblanche. Highly sought after and rising in valuation year after year, the MH900e is one of those limited edition bikes from Ducati that always generate tremendous interest.

The MH900e also began an interesting trend from the Bologna bike maker, expanding the use of the 2-valve desmo twin and ushering in the era of the Sport Classic series just a year after MHe production concluded. But the MH900e started it all, viewed as a modern homage to race winning hero, Mike Hailwood. Rumors have it that the MHe nomenclature was to work around licensing royalties involving the Hailwood name, but Ducati subsequently settled the matter retroactively with Mike the Bike’s widow.

While the L-twin was standard Supersport or Monster level on performance (meaning about 80 HP and all that great low-end torque), the remainder of the package was all super special and stylized. Features abound on the MH900e, and little details can open up whole new discussions. Take that single-sided swing arm, for example. Sure, it was done on the 916, but certainly not like this. Ditto for the high, under seat exhaust, poking out of the tiny tail like a double-barrel shotgun. What about the asymmetrical shock placement or even the rounded cases or chrome headlight bezel – all nice, subtle touches that somehow work well together. This is artwork you can ride, or more like a genuine performance motorcycle that you can park and enjoy as art.

This auction is going on right now, and is currently climbing through the low $20k mark. There is a reserve in place, and a Buy It Now option for $28,000. With only 2,000 units produced across a two year span (2001 & 2002), the MH900e will always be a collectable item. This bike looks to be extremely clean, has very low miles, and the seller has offered up some excellent pictures. Check out all of the action on this beautiful bike right here. Good Luck!!

Rouge One: 1999 Ducati MH900e pre-production

Given the futuristic Star Wars appearance of the bike – as well as the innovative internet-only sales model – I thought the reference to the movie franchise fitting. But what is more amazing is that this bike is purported to be Number One of the two thousand examples created (1k each as 2000 and 2001 model years). With zero miles, a nearly zero serial number and all of the usual fanfare that goes with this rebooted homage to Mike Hailwood, this particular example is rare, special and unique. It is also predictably expensive.

1999 Ducati MH900e pre-production model for sale on eBay

The MH900e is perhaps the most recognizable of the Pierre Terblanche designs. The “e” in the nomenclature stands for evoluzion (evolution in US-speak), referring of course to the Mike Hailwood replicas built on the 900cc bevel drive platform of the 1980s. Taking the spirit of the original but updating it to the new Supersport/Monster/Sport Classic desmodue foundation, the MH900e was part replica, part homage, and part new direction for Ducati. Power was via the standard 900cc, air-cooled, two valve workhorse of the Ducati lineup. Ditto with the gearbox. Major components aside, the bodywork, fuel tank, exhaust and asymmetrical trellis swing arm were pure MH900e. So, too, was the riding position with a long reach to the low bars. But comfort was not the design goal. Creating a sensation was the goal – and on this front Ducati hit one out of the park. Nearly 20 years later these are still coveted collector machines. And what could be more coveted than the very first one produced?

From the seller:
DUCATI MH900E original and authentic factory pre-production, first one ever produced.
everything original and authentic, no fake no repro. obtained directly from Ducati.
correct frame numbers and model, serial 000001….
perfectly working. many extra unique parts included.
unique opportunity.
serious inquires and offers are welcome
bike located in modena, italy. will properly crate for shipping.

This is not the first time we have seen this particular example. I reference you to Tad’s excellent write up from over a year ago, in which the seller included a significant amount of additional information. Including:

More from the seller:
The bike was acquired from Ducati with a non-production plastic body, painted flat black like the rest of the bike, including frame and swingarm. the exhaust was also custom-made, clearly an assembly try-out, yet perfectly working.

We did a “conservative” restoration on the bike, taking it completely apart, making sure every original bit and piece was kept and restored to obtain this amazing piece. we also decide to maintain the black look that sported when we got it, just upgraded it a bit with proper carbon body and custom-made graphics (Ducati made them for us).

The market for authentic, low mileage (aren’t they all??) MHe models is hot. One only needs to get lost in the details for a few hours to understand why. The swing arm alone is worthy of framing. The oil sump of the Pantah-based engine is recreated to resemble the round case units from the green frame bevel days. The under tail exhaust and intricate snaking of tubes looks impossibly large, yet balances out the aesthetics of the bike nicely. Chrome accents bring light and shine to the shape. Terblanche followed his muse on this one, and the siren song is without equal. If there are whisperings from the peanut gallery they usually form around the relatively low HP of the stock desmodue engine (approximately 75 HP). Comfort is often another low point, although buyers of such exotica rarely mistake such machinery with a Gold Wing. Availability of parts is another fair comment, but such is the price of rarity, and the reason for ever escalating values.

Last November this Italian resident was offered with a starting bid of $50k USD and a reserve in place. There were no takers. One year later this same, ultra rare example of Ducati history is back on the block, but this time in a Buy It Now format. The first $49,900 takes the bike (after arranging passage from Modena), although in this round the seller is open to offers. The question remains how much of a premium a zero mile, number one serial number bike can fetch. With MHe examples in the mid to high $20k range, how long would it take for a buyer to earn this back on the investment? Perhaps we are looking at it all wrong here, as this is clearly a collector and art museum filler. At that target, a fair price is not market value but what something is worth to the buyer. Only one owner can claim first status, and this beautiful 1999 Ducati MH900e prototype is your ticket to the holy grail of Hailwood. Overpriced, over hyped or future investment of the century? Be sure and share your thoughts in our Comments section (but keep it civil – no haters please). Good Luck!!

Turn of the Century: 2002 Ducati MH900e with 937 miles!

MH900e_8

MHe owners rejoice! Your chance to cash in on the internet-hyped, Italian wrought, collector-stashed MH900 evoluzion is apparently right now. We who spend our lives at the RSBFS offices – intently searching for the best of the best – have noticed a not too subtle trend here. Quite simply: MHe bikes are showing up in the market more often, and they are commanding ever-higher prices.

MH900e_5

The good news is plentiful. Firstly, as these were primarily collector bikes, most have very low miles (such as this sub-1k example), all have been very well taken care of, and some have gone to the extreme of being housebroken (such as this bike here). MHe ownership also brought with it some tidy extras – a color matched swingarm stand, shirt, numbered plaque and bike cover.

MH900e_4

From the seller:

2002 Ducati MH900e
1559 out of 2000 manufactured, vin number ZDM1LA4N52B000868

Clear California Title, current PNO. I am the second owner of this motorcycle since 2005, having purchased it from my friend at Moto Corsa in Portland. It has traveled a total of 937 miles in probably ten uses. The rest of the time it has been a piece of art in my loft. It is bone stock with no modifications. I recently replaced the batteries. I start it regularly and bring it to operating temperature (much to the dismay of my neighbors) Kept on battery tender it is ready to enjoy either as static or rolling art. This Ducati shows no sign of wear or blemishes at all. No oil leaks or discoloration. A remarkable piece to be sure. I have with this bike the numbered plaque, manuals, and all keys. I do not have the tee shirt nor the red pit stand. I guarantee the new owner compete satisfaction with this beautiful piece of art. Interesting trades are interesting.

MH900e_1

The MHe was sold out the first day it was offered – January 1, 2000. This was carefully orchestrated by Ducati to celebrate the millenium. And while Ducati eventually built twice as many units as the 1,000 originally announced, these bikes continue to impress with artistic good looks and a coveted rarity. Such was not always the case however – the MHe went through a pricing slump based the additional units, and comments on the less than ideal riding experience (i.e. lack of comfort, small fuel tank, illegible warning lights, etc.). The rebound on this model has been strong, however, and MHe models are selling for more than ever.

MH900e_7

This bike is located in California, and is claimed to be all original. The pictures show a good example stored in the ideal climate controlled environment; inside the house. The miles are low, the pictures are high res, and the BIN on this bike is a cool $22,900. Is this higher than the market will bear? We have seen crazy price jumps on several bikes this year, and the MHe might just be the next model to make that list. Check out this beautiful bike here, and let us know where you think the market is headed. Is collecting back in style, or is it time to cash out? Good Luck!
