Copy That: 2006 Ducati 999R Xerox

The Ducati R bike has always been a major factor in the history of Ducati. Renowned originally as homologation machines in order to go racing, the R brand has taken on a life of its own as a limited edition, high performance exclusive tier of the existing model line. And while there may be some scoffing that Ducati R models are simply marketing exercises, the truth is that the R generally represents the top spec for the brand, with components and upgrades to match. Such is the case with today’s bike, a 2006 999R in striking Xerox livery.

The 999 is known for a few parlor tricks. The first is that in the eyes of many, it is…. well…. ugly. Designer Pierre Terblanche had big shoes to fill when he was chosen to pen the successor to Massimo Tamburini’s 916/996/998 masterpiece. In photos, the 999 seems to indicate that Terblanche choked. The resulting bike simply did not flow like the earlier Ducati models. But in person the 999 is astonishing in its presence. All this considers a bike in a base color (i.e. red). Pop on the very limited Xerox racing livery, however, and this model truly comes visually alive. Gone are the huge expanses of one color across the side panels (they are long and flat compared to previous models). The diagonal placement of the side logo helps make the bike appear shorter than otherwise. Similarly, the red/white livery on the nose helps dampen the sharpness of the stacked headlight set up, and reduces the 999’s beaky profile. Of all the graphics available, the Xerox is the best looking of the 999s, although I do miss the peek-a-boo carbon bits of the fairing found on the non-liveried bikes.

Ducati made just 300 of the 999R models, and just a handful of Xerox livery versions.
With an MSRP of $29,995, it cost about $8,000 more than a 999S.

The seller has done a decent job outlining how one makes an R bike. You start with the already potent 999S, you add horsepower and better brakes/suspension, bolt on some very glam farkles, and you put the whole thing on a diet. It’s a very simple recipe that Ducati has been following for decades, and results in some very iconic bikes. Going one step further, Ducati artificially limits the number of bikes produced, and attaches an exclusive production number on the headstock. The result is looks and performance with built-in exclusivity as a standard feature, right out of the Bologna factory.

Hugely collectible, these are getting very rare to find in this condition. This bike is in almost flawless condition.

This bike is one of the most beautiful bikes that Ducati has ever built, and they just dont make special models like this anymore. If you set out to make a replica of this bike, the paint and graphics would cost a fortune. It’s not that hard to find a 999R, but the Xerox is really rare and special.

So there is the other Ducati R model parlor trick: it’s expensive. R bikes have always commanded significantly higher prices than standard models. Some of this is due to the costs associated with the higher-spec components, and some is due to the drive for even more exclusivity. Regardless, R bikes are always more collectible than a base edition and will be the ones most likely to grow in value over time. And since many R bikes are riders, finding a low mile version with a rare graphics package and in sublime condition can be difficult. Today’s example has just 5,353 miles, looks to be in incredible condition, and is offered for a $20k Buy It Now. The seller appears to be open to offers, but I’m not sure I’d expect too much back pedaling. The dollar ask is strong, but so is the bike on offer – search the pages of RSBFS for another Xerox and you’ll only find a few – and all from some years back. Dirty Duc: 2005 Ducati 999R

What you’re looking at here is certainly not the nicest 2005 Ducati 999R that I have ever seen, but it is still a 2005 Ducati 999R, and that gives it a couple free passes and a trump card or two. Knicked though parts of it may be, it is still every bit the 135-horsepower carbon-clad repliracer that it was 14 years ago. Built to be the barrel-chested alpha male of superbike racing, the 999 series was quick to prove its mettle. It carried off three World Superbike Titles and a British Superbike title between 2004 and 2006, spawning a raft of special editions in the process. The wins also helped make up for its, uh, controversial visage.

The 999R separated itself from the base bike and the 999S with an engine that not only had sexier internals — titanium connecting rods and a knife-edged crankshaft among them — it had a different bore and stroke in sandcast cases. Wear items and big-ticket repairs on this bike will be a real thing when the time comes, but will be worth it.

As I said earlier, this one has some blemishes and its fair share of dirt, but does appear to be a real-deal 2005 Ducati 999R. It looks like it has aftermarket footpegs, and there is a weird rub mark on the stamped VIN. Despite the dirt, the seller says it has only covered 1,324 miles, and it appears to be in ready-to-ride shape.

At $28,000, the price is tied for the highest ask I have seen for one of these with a zero-mile FILA Edition bike from  a few weeks back. Low-mileage non-special-editions have recently been changing hands in the high teens, but there’s always exceptions.

Mid-aughts Ducati was no stranger to dressing up their street bikes in World Superbike drag, spitting out special editions left, right and center, but they put a little bit of extra muscle under the stylish suit with the 999R FILA. Built to celebrate Duc’s 200th win in World Superbike competition, the FILA got a 10 horsepower bump over the standard bike, bringing the L twin to a total of 146. The special paint was slathered on carbon fiber bodywork, which was draped around a WSBK-style swingarm.

The bikes also got adjustable Ohlins forks and shock, forged wheels from Ducati Corse and radial brakes, which weren’t yet standard equipment on race replicas. This 2004 Ducati 999R FILA has been ridden sparingly in its 15 years, but the wear marks on its stick tires belie that it has been used at least partially as intended. Though it was used, the pictures show that it is still incredibly clean and fully ready for the new owner to enjoy.

A picture of the gauges in the listing shows 1,976 miles, not 1,700, but 200 miles is so few it’s almost not worth mentioning. The bike is listed at $16,800, not quite $2,000 less than the last 999R FILA we highlighted. With so few around, nice ones like this should keep their value.

Ugly no more? 2005 Ducati 999R

When the 999 series was introduced in 2003 as the successor to the fantastic 916/996/998 genealogy of Ducati Superbikes, the world collectively groaned. Far removed from the sexy, flowing lines of the Tamburini-penned predecessors, the Terblanche-designed 999 series was rough and angular. The stacked headlight arrangement made the bike instantly recognizable in the sort of way a clown sticks out in a police lineup consisting of otherwise normal, average businessmen. In short, it was everything the earlier generations were not. There was some commonality for the Ducati faithful, however: Performance. The 999 – and especially the top-of-the-line R model – were quicker and faster than the bikes that came before. This became especially evident in World Superbike racing; so good was the platform that the 999 soldiering on through the 2007 racing season even though the bike ended production in 2006.

Despite the appearance, the aerodynamics of the 999 was actually more efficient than the earlier models. This translated not only into racetrack success, but a better riding experience. With greater adjustability and better ergonomics, more riders could enjoy the extreme Ducati experience. And what an experience – thanks to the updated L-twin testaretta engine now producing 150 HP at nearly 10,000 RPM. But as most of you already know, it is the torque of the desmoquattro twin that really drives the bike off of the corners. To that end Ducati fitted the 999R with radial-mount Brembo calipers, the very best equipment to slow you down for the next bend in the road. Out back the braced box-section swing arm keeps track of the rear wheel movement with fewer unsprung pounds than the earlier single-sided unit. Ohlins suspension (fully adjustable, naturally) completes the impressive list of components bolted to the R spec superbike.

The ugly-duckling 999R was an exclusive and expensive piece of kit. Produced in low numbers (an estimated 200 units in 2005), the R model would set you back 30 large bills a decade and a half ago. At the time, many would-be buyers considered that a ridiculous price for such a visual departure from normal Ducati supermodel status. Today, we find that the 999 series has aged rather well. The lines have held up better than the so many me-too copies that permeate the used bike listings. This is a distinctive, evocative motorcycle that brings substantial performance along for the ride. Look closely at the details – for example how the “Ducati” and “999R” logos on the fairing are actually clear coated showing the carbon fiber below – and then look at the price for a decent used example. Ugly no more, indeed.

At the time of writing this 4,000 mile bike has just crossed over the $8k mark, with reserve still in place. We have seen these bikes push into the $20ks for pristine examples, down to the high teens for others in good condition. This particular specimen has been modified to some degree, but most changes have been in the interest of performance. Check out this beast here, and let’s see what the market says.
