Got my Filas on: 2003 Ducati 999R

The 2003 Ducati 999R Fila Edition was just one of a bunch of special edition bikes Bologna kicked out in the aughties to celebrate its myriad World Superbike successes. The Fila bikes were produced to hat tip Neil Hodgson picking up the storied marque’s 200th win, and were  more than just a branded sticker package. Instead, the 200 examples came with the R’s carbon fiber bodywork, sexier suspension bits and upgraded engine internals and a more aggressive fuel system.

That all meant the commemorative edition kicked out a bunch more power, was more confident in the twists and told the story of its successes in battle. While Ducati could be accused of kicking out some truly asinine specials in the mid-2000s, this is not one of those times.

This bike is number 30 of 200, and is in 100% stock condition. In 16 years it has seen just 22 miles (yes, twenty two), and has been stored without oil or gas in it, though the internals have been misted to keep them from seizing. The pictures are not hugely detailed, but they seem to back up the seller’s claims about the bike’s spot- and blemish-free condition. The tires appear to be original and still have the nubs from the mold.

From the eBay listing:

Ducati 999R Fila Edition
Numbered 0030
Bike is brand new 22/miles
Museum quality and is actually where bike was delivered from. Came from the Barney Besal collection. You can research the bike on youtube and internet both to get all the information on it you need.
Bike is spotless not one scratch
Bike is dry stored- no oil, gas, anything but has been fogged to protect all internals.
Bike is 100 factory no addons
Bike is no reserve but will not be cheap either. I have found another bike even rarer that i would like but am going to have to liquidate around 10 bikes to achieve it.
Any question message me.
Shipping i can assist in as well
No reserve

At $28,000, this Ducati is far from a steal, but it occupies a rarefied position among replica bikes, and for the dedicated Ducatisti, it’s a serious collection booster.

Lust AND trust: 2004 Ducati 999R FILA edition in Florida USA

Today’s post is for a Ducati FILA 999R in Florida  with less than 2,000 miles since new.  While the 999 series isn’t hard to find for sale, approximately 70 FILA editions were imported into the USA so finding one in this condition and mileage is quite rare.

2004 999R FILA with under 1300 miles on ebay

For a while it seemed like every Ducati sportbike had at least 3 different versions with some also having a “commemorative edition”.   While these commemorative editions seemed to be mostly overpriced marketing exercises (cough-Nieman-Marcus-748-cough) the Ducati FILA edition was a bit different.  The FILA 999R was launched to celebrate Ducati’s 200th win in the World Superbike Championship and came with all the 999R level goodies such as carbon-fiber bodywork, top-level engine internals, as well as an upgraded fuel system and upgraded suspension.  All the changes meant that the R offered 40BHP more over the basic/strada version while also being lighter and handling better.

The FILA edition also had another advantage over the other 999 versions; it just looked much better.  Initial reviews of the 999 series were that it certainly wasn’t as pretty as the predecessor 998 (which still looked in large part like the legendary 916).  Many people commented that the 916 had a balance of form and function, also sometimes called “the-balance-between-lust-and-trust”.  The 999 was perceived as high trust, low lust in large part due to its full fairing on the front but very small rear fairing.  Fortunately the FILA edition elicited no such complains although a few reviewers indicated the paint and decal quality could leave something to be desired.

This particular bit of carbon wrapped goodness is being offered by a dealer in Florida.   Unfortunately there is zero information in the listing about any servicing and given the low miles, I would expect the tires and fluids to all be original and also the belts would likely need to be redone.  While this (and possibly a battery) would be likely costs, this bike looks to be absolutely pristine.

So is this 999R FILA worth the Buy-It-Now price of $18,500 USD?   Honestly I think that price is a bit high.  FILA editions seem to trade somewhere between 11-13k so the price bump for this one seems to be based on the mileage and the fact that the seller is a dealer.  The seller does indicate an opening bid price of $15,000 USD which is more reasonable and demonstrates a bit of potential movement on the price.

Perhaps the real question is whether this one will appreciate going forward.   While certainly not as dramatic as a Desmosedici or Supermono, the FILA edition does seem to be the most desired 999 series bike.  I would predict a bit more depreciation over the next 8 years, then a stabilization and slow price increase over time.  This one will probably appeal to a collector with a long term mindset and homologation/Ducati R series collector.

Bit of an odd Duc: 2003? Ducati 999R FILA edition

Hmmm…the seller lists this one as a 2003 Ducati 999R FILA edition but a few things seem odd, including the year listed and the graphics.   Perhaps someone with more direct experience can advise in the comments section…?

2003 Ducati 999R FILA edition on ebay

First a bit of history; back in the early 2000’s it seemed like every new Ducati sportbike had a minimum of 3 different versions plus a commemorative edition. There would be a basic/strada street version, a mid-level bike S bike with some upgrades still intended for street riders and finally a top level R bike that, while still street legal, included lots of track oriented tech.  Any commemorative editions would typically be based on either the S or R level bikes, although occasionally they were even done at the standard/strada level (I’m-looking-at-you-Nieman-marcus-edition-Ducati-749).

The Ducati FILA editions were based on the top level 999″R” and were introduced in 2004 to celebrate Ducati’s 200th win in the World Superbike Championship (note: there was also a James Toseland FILA edition in 2005).  The FILA editions came with carbon-fibre bodywork, lighter engine internals, upgraded injectors, a lighter front and rear sub-frame and Ohlins front and rear suspension.   The changes added added up to about another 40HP from the basic/strada 999.

The FILA edition also had another advantage over the strada and S versions; it looked much better.  When the 999 was launched many people found the design to be a step back from the predecessor 998 (which was an evolution of the Tamburini penned 916).   To many people the initial versions of the 999 looked unbalanced, with full fairings on the front but an exposed trellis frame and odd small rear fairing.   Fortunately versions such as the S based Parts Unlimited and R version FILA and XEROX editions met with much more approval.

This particular bike is listed as a 2003 Ducati FILA edition and at it looks clean with no indication of having been abused ordown.  The only non-stock items I noticed were the chain and wheel stripes (which might be decals) and possibly the license plate hanger/tail unit.

However a closer review did raise a few questions, including why is bike listed as a 2003 FILA edition? From what I remembered and what I found on the web, the FILA edition was offered from 2004-2006 but not in 2003.  Also the decals on the front fairing/windscreen area and gas tank do not seem to match to the standard FILA edition decal layout and what have seen on previous 999R FILA editions here on RSBFS.   Its possible they were removed by a previous owner but since there was also a general 999R in 2003 so its also possible this bike has undergone a bodywork and/or wheel change by a previous/current owner who didn’t like the look of the standard bike.

fila4

Some general service info about the bike is included in the auction listing as are lots of good pictures.  Here is what the seller has to say:

  • 11,745 miles
  • Never been dropped but very small nicks in paint on lower fairing.
  • Less than normal wear and tear for bike this age and mileage
  • New battery, Pirelli tires in good condition
  • Always serviced by Ducati dealers only and stored in climate controlled area
  • Completely stock with no upgrades
  • Comes with spare key and owners manual

fil7

So what is the 2003 Ducati 999R FILA-badged beauty worth?  Well it certainly looks to be in very good condition and the current bid price is about $5,400 USD with 3 days to run (reserve is not met at this time).  Prices for a Ducati 999R FILA editions seem to be hovering between 12k-15k USD (which is about 1/2 of their original asking price) and for this one I would expect reserve to be right in the middle of that range given the mileage and condition, provided it can be confirmed to be an actual FILA edition.

Overall this appears to a good Rare Sportbike but I am not sure it will appreciate over time.  Also any serious collector would need to contact the seller regarding whats going on with the fairing decals and perhaps perform a VIN check?

Fa-la-la-la FILA: 2004 999R FILA

fila3

Over the last 20 years Ducati seems to have focused on a 3-segment strategy for their bikes;  a tiny top segment of unobtanium level technical masterpieces such as the SuperMono or Desmosedeci, a big general segment of standard level bikes such as the Monster for the masses and in the middle, a segment comprised of limited edition bikes that are produced in small numbers and combine the standard bike with some of the unobtainum technology.   The limited edition bikes can range between mere paint schemes such as the Senna 749 to close to race replica “R” bikes with big technical differences between them and the standard bike.

fila2

2004 Ducati 999R FILA edition for sale on ebay

Here we have a 2004 999R FILA edition.  The FILA edition 999R was produced by Ducati in 2004 to celebrate its 200th win in the World Superbike Championship and was a limited edition production run of 200 special versions of the Ducati 999R in the official 2003 FILA livery. For anyone not familiar with the 999R, it had some big changes over the standard 999S, including full carbon fibre body work, lightweight engine internals, different injectors, a lighter crank and a bigger bore all which added up to about  another 40HP. The 999R also had lighter front and rear subframes, and Ohlins front and rear suspension.

fila4

Now I know a  lot of people (myself included) didn’t particularly like the 999 look when it came out.  Compared to the 916/996 predecessor it looked disjointed with full bodywork at the front and almost none at the rear.  Also, some said it was a case of overbranding and to be honest, Ducati has been known to make some odd branding/limited edition production decisions (such as this scooter). However, over the last ten years the 999R FILA edition seems to have won over most people. Comments on the Ducati forum and overheard at bike nights seem to confirm that most people think the FILA bodywork makes the 999R look great, although more than a few comments have been made against the two different wheel colors.

fila6

So what is this 999R Fila worth?  Well it only has 6050 miles,  it doesn’t appear to have been modified, and its #80 of 200. The asking price of almost 15k seems to be inline with previous listings on RSBFS and KBB, although KBB seems less reliable for limited edition bikes.  So if a 999R is one your list for father Christmas and you are on the west coast of the USA, this might be a good opportunity.  Guess it depends on how naughty you have been… 🙂

2003 Ducati 999R Fila #11 in North Hollywood

2003 Ducati 999R Fila For Sale

Today we’ve got a 999R factory Fila replica. The owner notes that this is #11 of 200 and as such added Rueben Xaus number plates to match. This bike has obviously been given special care and has seen limited use with just 6300 miles. Plus the shot of the bike in the bedroom completes the picture! The auction is starting at $18.5k reserve not met and offering a $24k buy-it-now, which makes this one of the more expensive Fila’s we’ve seen. But the package includes some very expensive upgrades and helps get even closer to a race replica for the street.

Canadian Special: 3 Limited Edition Ducatis

Check out this group of 3 late model Ducati superbikes for sale from the same seller. Heck, throw in a Hailwood & 888 SPO and you’ll have a sweet chronology of Ducati Superbikes. These bikes all appear to be in great condition, so let’s look at them individually.

The 998s Bostrom is especially unique in the lack of miles it has accumulated through the years. Although we have seen a fair amount of Bostrom replicas on RSBFS (here), few have matched the low miles on this example – less than 1,000 miles! Although I love this model and the low mileage on it, the price at $25,000 U.S. dollars seems very optimistic to me.

Ah the forgotten Ducati, the Fila 999R. Most Ducatisti will fondly remember the 916/996 series and most will also admire the handsome 1098/1198, but few cherish the 999. In some ways this bike never had a chance; following the 916 is no easy task. This bike is especially remarkable in that it is brand new – only 8KM! The price is virtually identical to the Bostrom, but this one is NEW.

On to the crown jewel of this trio – the 1098R Bayliss Replica. This bike is also brand new and nothing short of stunning. The Bayliss bike has been crippled from the get go by a weak economy, weak US dollar and aggressive pricing by Ducati. This convergence of factors led to an abundance of new or like new Bayliss bikes, similar to this one, selling way below MSRP right off the showroom floor.

I hope someone goes big and picks up all three.
