Alternative Transport: 1983 Moto Guzzi LeMans III

In the world of big-bore bikes – man sized machines – Moto Guzzi has always stood out with a unique style of individualistic and rugged beauty. The oldest continually operational motorcycle manufacturer in Europe, Guzzi was formed in Italy in 1921 with the intent to build motorcycles after World War I. Comprised of the triumvirate of Giorgio Parodi (the money man), Giovanni Ravelli (the racer and promoter) and Carlo Guzzi (the guy who designed and built the bikes), Moto Guzzi began with a simple partnership agreement between the three. Sadly, Ravelli lost his life in a plane crash immediately following the end of the war, and would not take part in the venture. His spirit lives on, however, as the Guzzi logo incorporates wings meant to honor and commemorate the original, fallen partner.

The Le Mans series of machines drew from Moto Guzzi’s great racing heritage and paid homage to the famous 24-hour race. These bikes were created during the De Tomaso era of Moto Guzzi (which lasted through the end of the 1990s). The first generation of 850 Le Mans bikes was introduced in 1976, utilizing the now familiar 90 degree V-twin that has been the Guzzi hallmark since the 1960s. Through the decades that were to follow, the Le Mans series was steadily updated, culminating in the 1000cc Le Mans Mark V in the 1990s. This bike, a Mk III edition, is the more spiritual successor to the original Le Mans model than the Mk II bike, which incorporated a larger fairing and other aerodynamic bits. Power from the longitudinally-mounted twin is modest (mid 70 HP range), but a flat torque curve aids the motoring experience. Novel features included shaft drive and an interlinked braking system whereby the rear brake pedal also activates one disk on the front.

Extremely nice 1983 Moto Guzzi LeMans III. 27,398 miles. Probably one of the nicest originals you’ll find. Starts, runs, rides and stops exactly as it should. Fantastic example of the great bikes from this iconic Italian company. Prices for the LeMans I are out the roof, and the LeMans II have followed. Now the LeMans III has caught on and they are gaining in desirability and value daily. I have no real desire to sell this bike, but an opportunity has come along for which I could use the funds. That said, selling it is not a must so my reserve is firm. I love the bike and am aware of its value, both now and in the future, so have no problem keeping it if it doesn’t meet the reserve. Bike needs nothing that I know of so is sold AS IS with no warranty. Clear title in hand.

When introduced, these Guzzi Le Mans models were every bit the performance bike as their Italian contemporaries from Ducati or Laverda. However the performance landscape was rapidly changing thanks to the Far East, and the likes of Guzzi would soon be overwhelmed by Japanese fours. The high-speed, gentlemanly cruiser fell to the crushing blow of high-RPM horsepower, stoplight drags and technical revolutions in GP racing. Today, Moto Guzzi still exists and produces motorcycles… but these are often viewed more as nostalgic novelties than outright competitors in the crowded motorcycle marketplace.

Based on the included description, this seller will be holding out for top dollar on this bike. The asking price of older Guzzis (think V7s and the like) are most definitely on the rise. We have seen a slight dip in the ascension of value lately, but there is no doubt that when it comes to the Le Mans model Gen I (often mistakenly referred to as Mark I) bikes command the highest prices. From there, it is much more the preference of the buyer that determines the value. Mark III machines with the bikini fairing and long, flat seat have the same theme as the original Le Mans, along with a host of upgrades – making them an excellent choice as a riding collector piece. I would expect values to continue to rise. This one is up just over $5k with reserve in place. Super-Sporty – 1996 Yamaha TRX-850

Hoping to jump into the budget-conscious supersport market, Yamaha developed the TRX-850 twin and introduced it in Japan and Europe.  Slow sales kept it from a long history and the U.S., but this private import is a nice example of an interesting bike.

Adding the Genesis 5-valve heads to their 849cc parallel twin resulted in 80 hp, and engineers also went to a 270-degree crank design to preserve rotational energy.  A good illustration of how it widens the torque band ( and why a counterbalance shaft was included ) in a parallel twin is here.  The engine also boasts a dry-sump system with a neat integral oil tank just above the clutch.  Beside the nice trellis frame, there was a bit of parts-bin engineering, with right-side-up forks and 5-speed transmission.  Peculiarly, the European models came with Yamaha brakes, but Japanese versions had Brembos, either way they are adequate 298 mm dual disks in front and 248 mm rear.  The supersport picture is completed by an upper-only fairing and solo-plus-one seat fairing.

The Florida owner brought the bike in and has made a few choice mods, and the auction check-box indicates clear title.  With 31K on the clock it has been well loved, and appears in good shape.  A weekend at the detailer’s and most evidence of carport storage will be gone.  From the eBay auction:

1996 Yamaha TRX-850, these bikes were never imported in the US, I bought this bike in England and shipped it here. As far as I know this is one of only few or only one here in the states!  They were only made for a couple of years, as competition for the Ducati 900ss.  It has a 270* crankshaft so it even sounds like a Ducati v-twin, a trellis frame, and hand made gas tank that resembles a Ducati.  The engine has 2 oil pumps,5 quart dry sump oil tank, and is liquid cooled also. It is a Genesis engine with 10 valves, 5 per cylinder.  New Michelin tires, braided stainless brake lines, EBC carbon fiber clutch, adjustable clutch and brake levers, belly pan, tire hugger, Carbon dash and clamp covers, R6 shock, R1 calipers, 2 windscreen (1 new-1 used), LED tail-light with signals, silicon water hoses, and Stainless steel header with Remus carbon mufflers.

A bit of a unicorn stateside, but way sportier than the surviving TDM, the TRS-850 does have a good fan base, and the auction has generated several bids.  Might be a good way for a Yamaha fan to break in to a rare sporty bike without busting the budget…

Cafe Traditionale – 1984 Moto Guzzi 850 Le mans Mk III

Moto Guzzi went back to the drawing board to meet emissions ( noise mostly ) constraints, and heavily revised the 850 Le Mans, keeping the air-cooled V-twin, but quieting some of the noise and critics.

Revisions to the engine and bodywork led the way for the Mark 3, the angular headed 2-valve twin generating 81 hp.  Angles dominate the fairing design as well, the bikini doing a nice job protecting the rider, and connecting the angular design to the fuel tank and seat fairing.  Guzzi traditions like Dell’Orto carburetors, linked brake system, and shaft drive are retained.  New ideas are there, like air-adjustable suspension and the crankcase vent routed through the frame tube to reduce noise.

Under new ownership, the Le Mans offered here has had a little freshening up, and looks good for its 29,000 miles.  Substantially stock, I’m liking those head guards.  From the eBay auction:

The bike is very unmolested, all the cables, grommets, fasteners, clips etc are as from the factory (except the valve cover fasteners which I replaced with stainless and the odd nut here and there). The bike hasn’t been apart or messed with. All switches, idiot lights, horn and turn signals work. The mileage is correct. The bike was owned by a lady for 20 years who really looked after it and just rode it. The bike sat for 5 years before I bought it.

I’ve owned it for a year and a half and in that time done the following work: repainted the original bodywork. Fairing decal set from MG Cycle. Tank has no dents and has the original factory paint. New crossover and fuel lines. Carb rebuild and set up. Full service and oil change with filter and FAC front dampers in the last week. I’ve put approximately 3K miles on the bike and it runs flawlessly.
Prior upgrades were stainless brake lines, Koni shocks and a Dyna ignition.

Moto Guzzi ignored the arrival of the Interceptors, GS’s and GPz’s, and stuck by their sport bike principles and their fans.  The heavyweight tested as a fun, stable ride, and once the air suspension was set up, a good handler.  The formula has brought Guzzi into the water-cooled, fuel injected era, if not WSBK.  The owner is really into it and has his own Guzzi fan site.  This nicely updated classic will get plenty of attention on the next coffee run…

By now the Formula USA / Xtreme race series of the late 1990’s is a distant memory, when factories and privateers brought pretty much their wildest dreams to the track and went head to head.  Rob Muzzy was merely a legendary race tuner and team manager back then, and after many year preparing Kawasakis for AMA Superbike icons like Scott Russell and Doug Chandler, Muzzy developed his own ZX-7R-based machine.  Expanding the displacement to 835cc and making substantial changes to the chassis, the Muzzy Raptor was made in homologation quantities only, instantly successful, and now almost unobtainable.

A brand new ZX-7R disassembled at the Muzzy facility in Bend, Oregon, the bike would be treated to gear-driven cams, titanium connecting rods, and a lightened crank.  The bespoke engine made in the vicinity of 165 hp.  The Kawi swingarm was replaced with an adjustable single-sided magnesium casting, and Ohlins shock added.  Up front Muzzy’s own adjustable triple clamp held 48mm KYB forks, again tuned by Muzzy.  Brakes were updated to 320mm A-P disks with 6-piston calipers in front, 270mm rear.

Borrowing the reptilian expression of the ZX-7R, Muzzy’s design for the carbon bodywork improved the ram-air inlet and reduced drag.  The Marchesini magnesium wheels are wide, 3-1/2 inch in front and 6 inch rear.  Exhaust was replaced by a 4 into 2 titanium system into 1 carbon muffler.  Without fuel the bike weighed only 355 lbs.

The auction has only one photo, and states that this is chassis number 0001, and the bike has been on display since 1,200 miles.  From the eBay auction:

It has been kept in Rob Muzzy’s private collection and now available for the first time. This bike features the adjustable swing arm pivot and steering head pivot as the race bikes. Not really for the road and certainly not for a less than expert rider, this is the real deal, requiring more of a team concept to set up and run seriously.  While better documentation would have been nice, the mechanical basis is well known, and this unicorn has been in so many of our bedtime stories that we have a good idea what to expect.  Hard to say how many of the possibly 50 bikes have survived, but the company is collecting information about a possible ZX-12 based Raptor here.  Rob Muzzy’s next project was drag racing, a no-nonsense arena brutal on the equipment, where his teams have won multiple championships.   An appreciable amount of information about the Raptor is available, but any collector seriously considering this bike will likely send his mechanic out to Bend to take a look.  And maybe come home with a trophy, numbered 0001…

It’s raining Guzzis! 1978 Moto Guzzi LeMans

For Sale: 1978 Moto Guzzi LeMans Mk I

There is no doubt, Guzzis are hot right now. This beautiful Mk I bike was pointed out to us by the lucky new owner of the last LeMans we covered (click here for details), who just so happens to also be a RSBFS reader. And as is common with the rare models we seek, you may not find a bike for months only to suddenly come across several; when it rains it pours.

This bike has very few miles, and appears to be in good condition. It certainly helps when a bike stays in one home for a long period of time, and that is certainly what has happened here – this is the original owner!

From the seller:
I bought this bike new in Geneva, IL. Original bill of sale and IL title. All paint and seat is factory. 120 miles ago (April 1995) Harpers went through the bike and did a full mechanical restoration at a cost of $5,247.22. Has DYNA III ignition, Bitubo fork springs, and oil sump extender. The exhaust was purchased from Reno Leoni in 1979 or ’80. The starter was replaced in 2007 but I saved the original. I have the ORIGINAL TIRES AND EXHAUST SYSTEM. Also have shocks somewhere and will include if found. FLAWS: a small ding on each side of the tank where the handle bars made contact. Also, a small piece broken off an upper fin on the right head BUT, there is a new right head included in the sale! The Guzzi has always been stored in my work area at the shop. I rode it once in 2008. Very reasonable reserve. For sale locally.

We don’t often see this quality of classic Guzzi, much less a low-miles, original owner example. If you have been on the hunt for one of these cafe racer bikes, I would consider this your opportunity. This auction is on now, and the current bid is at $6,600 with the reserve not yet met. Earlier Guzzis LM models have mostly crossed for $8k+, so this is still in bargain bin territory. The seller will even throw in a few extras!

1976 Moto Guzzi LeMans

For Sale: 1976 Moto Guzzi Lemans 850

Given the positive responses to a few of the recent Guzzis posted here on RSBFS, I made an extra effort to another one. Never let it be said that we don’t respond to our readership! It would appear that my efforts have paid off with this beauty, a 1976 850 LeMans. Sure, it is reaching thirty-something status in life, but it is still a looker.

This example, powered by the ubiquitous air-cooled, two-valve Moto Guzzi 850cc v-twin, shows only minor alterations from stock. As the seller notes, this may be one of the earliest LeMans models imported into the country!

From the seller:
This is my Guzzi Lemans, which I have enjoyed for about 10 years. This is a very early Lemans, VIN# VE70505. I have not confirmed this but the bike may be the fifth Lemans imported into the USA.

Updates I have made along the way

All three calibers are updated Brembo’s with single 10mm bleader

I am the second owner the bike was purchased Portland Cycles Yamaha: Portland, Maine. The fairing and side covers still have original blue paint. Original carb bellmouths. I mostly ran K&N’s which come with the bike.

There are scratches on the front fender, a crack in the rear fender, and a small dent in the tank…please see pictures.

I want to adress a question before it comes up, the wheel color. This is my second Lemans, all Lemans’s I have seen have had silverish wheel color. To my surprise this bike had a cream color wheel, with the outer rim polished. I color matched the wheel and omitted the polished rim. Again I feel that this Lemans is not typical of later versions.

This is really a great looking bike, with a unique stance and presence all its own. Collectors seem to be snapping up these old relics, and pricing has certainly been on the rise. These old M-G machines might just be the blue chip investments of the sport bike world, and the resurgence of the cafe racer movement certainly does not hurt!

If you are ready to join the lumbering world of the big v-twin, or simply enjoy an experience that is decidedly different, then this might be the bike for you. Bidding is now in the $7500 range, with a reserve still in place. There are more pics and more info available – just click the link and

Funny how times change. When this bike was released in 1978, it was considered a heavyweight, large displacement, fast sportbike; a race replica. Fast forward some 30+ years, and what we have here is an interesting vestige of European thinking. In fact, this bike has been around long enough to where the Cafe Racer craze has come back to being cool!

The great thing about the Cafe Racer craze making a comeback is that this bike IS very cool. With the distinctive Guzzi v-twin look, decent power from 850cc, a decidedly sporty riding position and great paint, this bike really looks the business. It is no wonder that the value of these bikes are rising at auctions everywhere.

For sale is my 78′ 850 Lemans. I bought it off the 2nd owner in Glendale California. He owned it since 81 and purchased it from the original owner, also in Glendale. It was purchased at Pro Italia in Glendale and serviced there for 31 years. I’ve owned it since November of 09 and had it serviced by my friends at Moto Guzzi Classics in Long Beach. I have to get rid of a couple of my toys to buy an Alfa Romeo. I did the following on 10.9.09 with 32,101 miles; – Changed engine oil and filter
– Changed gear box oil
– Rear drive service including oil
– New plugs and valve adjustment
– New brake pads
– New fork seals, dampers and fork oil
– New Conti Go tires

I also changed the oil on 8.3.10 at 34,005 miles and added a new Odyssey dry cell battery. This bike runs and brakes like it should – Sean at MG Classics said I found a strong runner. This bike has no mechanical issues that I am aware of. Cosmetically, it looks great as you can see by the photos but; please do not bid on this bike if you are expecting a show bike/concours bike. This bike looks amazing from 10ft, excellent from 5ft but upon very close inspection, it shows scratches and wear on the frame. It also has some but not all fasteners (now 33 years old) that show light rust or corrosion. The header pipe clamps have light rust too. The four areas of the bike that could be cleaned up a bit; 1. Front fender has light surface scratches (a bone headed move on my part, losing my grip on a wooden box from above and it grazed the fender), please see photo. 2. Some light paint missing from battery acid leak (right side of frame when the frame tubes form a “Y”near swing arm pivot). 3. Horn button missing (but horn works). 4. Scratches on exhaust on left under side pipe near center stand (from my boot buckle). The red paint still looks incredible, especially the tank, side panels, fenders. The fairing looks good but some of the day glo orange has sun fading. Original seat included and in amazing shape. Replacement Stucchi seat looks and feels even better. 3 out of 4 turn signals and manuals included. Marzzochi shocks original manual actually shows how to rebuild them – cool. To my knowledge, this bike hasn’t been restored. It really looks amazing.

While the seller clearly states that this is not a new bike, the pictures speak for themselves. This is undoubtedly a clean and well-cared for example of a rare species. Similar LeMans models that have recently been posted on RSBFS all sold north of the $8k mark. This bike is currently in the $5k range (with reserve not met), but should certainly go up above previous bikes. Should this bike fail to ignite a bidding war, you might find yourself with a well-priced, well-loved LeMans. The only way to find out is to click the link and . Good Luck!

I’m dreaming of an Italian Christmas – one with a 1983 LeMans III. These 1980s Guzzis are very attractive and desireable machines, combining a large V-twin with a stout chassis and brakes (linked, of course). With a long-ish wheelbase and shaft drive, the LeMans is more of a GT than flat-out sportbike – but it gets along quite well all the same!

Clean, nearly original, and in seemingly exceptional condition, I would expect this bike to meet the BIN price of $8500.
