Outasight – 2008 Ducati-NCR Mike Hailwood TT

Since its formation in 1967, NCR motorcycles has been Ducati’s de-facto competition arm, developing and producing race bikes based on Ducati themes.  For the 30th anniversary of Mike Hailwood’s 1978 Isle of Man TT victory ( on an NCR-built Ducati 900SS ), the company produced a very short run of super light, no-holds-barred commemoratives, with titanium frame and 1120cc air-cooled desmo engine.

2008 Ducati-NCR Mike Hailwood TT for sale on eBay

With the founders ready to retire in 2001, the owners of Poggipolini, a titanium manufacturing specialist, took an interest in NCR, and the Mike Hailwood TT became a showcase for advanced techniques, with a full titanium trellis and exhaust system.  Internal to the 130 hp V-twin is a billet crank, while the carbon fairings and wheels are easier to appreciate.  4-piston Brembo billet calipers and Öhlins MotoGP forks are leading edge, while the nostalgic twin rear Öhlins shocks at least leave room for the exhaust headers.

A number of the NCR Mike Hailwoods were delivered at the 2009 Isle of Man race, where the factory website says they were raced, though it may have been in an exposition part of the event.  The Vegas owner has added a couple of nice extras, and has this to say in the eBay auction:

THIS BIKE WAS $130,000.00 NEW EXCLUDING THE TI SWINGARM AND TI BIKE STAND.

AS YOU SEE IN THE PHOTOS ABOVE SWING ARM AND REAR STAND ARE STOCK DUCATI STEEL.

I HAD NCR MAKE ME A ONE OFF TITANIUM SWINGARM AND TITANIUM CUSTOM NCR STAND AT THE COST OF 7K PLUS. SWINGARM IS HALF THE WEIGHT OF THE STEEL ONE

PLEASE CONTACT ME THRU EBAY IF YOU NEED MORE INFO AND I WILL CALL YOU. THERE ARE LOTS MORE STORIES TO TELL

ULTRA LIGHT…… ULTRA FAST…… ONE OFF

Though the next owner will be a rare collector, the auction has a dozen bids, with $50K not hitting the reserve.  NCR’s ( and Poggipolini’s ) credibility is above reproach, and the 300 lb. machine is one of just a dozen or so.  Though one could quibble that these machines are built to be ridden, this TT likely will never see that third mile…

2002 Moto Guzzi V11 Le Mans Tenni with 1,204 miles !

Commemorating Omobono Tenni, a Guzzi racer who gave the factory many victories in the 1933-48 era ( and died in a crash during GP practice ), the Le Mans Tenni is a brilliant and subtle styling exercise using the recent V11 base.  This Tenni is badged number 114 of 170, and has been preserved with only first-oil-change miles.

2002 Moto Guzzi V11 Le Mans #114/170

Helped by Aprilia’s development lire, the V11 used the venerable air-cooled V-twin which reported 91 hp and nearly 70 ft.-lbs. torque.  Signature shaft drive is helped by a torque arm, and Marelli fuel injection makes starting and running easy.  Top components from Öhlins and Brembo, and improvements like the hydraulic clutch and oil cooler bring the big machine into the 21st century.

Owned by an Illinois collector, this Tenni is dead stock and almost unused.  The suede seat was a fair-weather option and a vinyl seat is also included.  Just a few dings on the seat fairing detract, but should correctable.  From the eBay auction:

Original owner of a rare, low mileage, unmolested Moto Guzzi LeMans Tenni, number 114 of 170 worldwide.  I purchased this motorcycle new in December 2003 from Motorsports Inc. in Wichita, KS.  I have kept the bike in a climate controlled space, and have not performed any alterations whatsoever to the engine or body.  Periodic cleaning, oil changes, and engine starting, with a occasional ride around the block!  Hence the very low miles.  Bike comes with an original Tenni sales brochure, owners manual, shop manual, parts manual, two keys, tool kit, MG bike cover, extra gasket set, and two seats (black vinyl and brown suede).

With weight approaching 550 lbs. wet, the V11 quickly becomes a lot of work to push quickly.  More suited to less twisty bits, the rock solid handling inspires confidence, and great torque makes for a fun ride.  The V11 has a mature powertrain, and the Tenni has premium appointments and an attractive take on racing green.  For a Guzzi fan, it’s a very low-mile example, 1 of 170 total of a single-year commemorative, with the late Le Mans half fairing, a modern and nice-riding machine to boot…

Plenty – 2003 BMW R1100S Boxer Cup Replika

BMW had great success with its long-running R1100S, and brought home some trophies, at least in the Boxer Cup marque series and some longer endurance races.  The racey Boxer Cup Replika has Randy Mamola’s signature and some interesting updates from the S.  This one has just break-in miles, and looks terrific.

2003 BMW R1100S Boxer Cup Replika for sale on eBay

At least until the R1200S came out, the R1100S had the ultimate boxer engine, the 1085cc making 98 hp with the help of single overhead cams actuating four valves per side.  The BCR sports carbon valve covers and a Laser exhaust.  The R1100S used BMW-centric Telelever front end and Paralever rear which included shaft drive, but the Replika used longer fork tubes to increase possible lean angle, and a shorter rear torque arm to sharpen up handling.  Standard BMW dampers were superseded by fully adjustable Öhlins on the BCR.  Brakes are up to BMW’s fine standard, and though ABS was available it’s not present on this example.

Leading a sheltered life in west coast Florida, this BCR looks excellent in the factory’s white and blue checkerboard.  Unadulterated but not neglected, the owner claims a new timing chain but this would have meant a huge event, so I’m thinking ( hoping ! ) they are referring to a new alternator belt.  Notes from the eBay auction:

An eye-catcher for sure, especially when pulling into a BMW dealership

Meticulously maintained in Air Conditioned, Dehumidified Space

Started and driven short distances every other week using octane boosted marine fuel

Brand new battery, timing belt (chain), Oil-Filter-Plugs changed at least annually

Rides beautifully, more comfortable than a Sports Touring Bike than a Sports Bike

Reviews of the R1100S almost always included a caveat, ” for a sport tourer ” or ” for a BMW “.  While it’s less of an issue for the Replika, it’s still hefty at 550 lbs. wet.  That weight will disappear in the cruise, but in the twisties or at a track day it will exact its toll.  But maybe your sporty ride is to the racetrack, an informal show, and home again.  BMW has over 90 years of motorcycle manufacture in the rearview mirror, and a great sporting heritage.  And while it has been overtaken by the more conventionally sporty S1000RR, the Boxer Cup Replika is plenty quick for the average bear, and has enough giddyup to get arrested in 2nd gear…

For a Beemer – 2004 BMW R1100S

After a 20-year break since the R100/S, BMW’s re-entrance to the more sporting side was thoughtfully  considered, with lots of new engineering, and as they approach classic status, a great success.  This nicely-updated R1100S looks excellent and fans of the brand would say, just broken in with 22,000 miles.

2004 BMW R1100S for sale on eBay

The R1100S arrived with concepts new to sportbikes – the four-valve 1085cc boxer, Telelever  front and Paralever rear suspension with shaft drive, single-plate clutch, ABS, and some things newer to BMW – clip-on handlebars and underseat exhaust.  BMW kept their vaunted build quality and usual Bosch fuel injection, but tried to leave the weight behind.  The engine is a stressed member of the aluminum chassis, and the supersport fairing flows from the beak, over the tank to the pillion cover.   Great power at 98 hp with 72 ft.-lbs. torque, and with a dry weight of 505 lbs. it’s light for a BMW.

Offered by an Illinois dealer, this R1100S looks well taken care of and has the optional grey / orange checkerboard.  A more sporting build since the ABS, centerstand, and heated grips were left off.  The owner has upgraded to Ohlins dampers on both ends, and added conspicuity lights on the fork legs.  The bags look like they just came out of the closet where, handy as they are, they should be returned.  From the eBay auction:

This 2004 BMW R1100S has only 22,370 miles and has had all of its maintenance performed by Cycle Werks in Barrington, we are an authorized BMW dealer.  This bike comes with BMW Saddle Bags, Ohlins suspension, Aux. Driving Lights, and much more!

For a BMW it’s sporty, light, and this one with low miles, and though succeeded by the R1200S, the R1100S is regarded as the better track machine.  The bike was the source of many years of the Boxer Cup, a single marque support series, resulting in the special edition Boxer Cup Replica.  But you can find an R1100S at almost any track day or racing school, just look for the guy with no trailer, he’ll be riding it home…

Meaty Beauty, Big and Bouncy – 1996 Moto Guzzi Sport 1100

With apologies to the Who, this cheesecake of a sportbike is one of Guzzi’s greatest hits.  The design was based on the Daytona and shown in fall 1993 as a 1994 model.  One of the last carburetted Guzzis, the 1996 model had fully adjustable suspension front and rear, and the company’s torquey 2-valve L-twin.  This higher-mile example has been well-loved and presents well.

1996 Moto Guzzi 1100 Sport for sale on eBay

No denying the 1100 Sport tends toward the traditional, with the slightly oversquare air-cooled mill and 5-speed shaft drive.  But a new frame design began the updates, W-P provided the outstanding forks and monoshock, and un-linking the brake system was a nod toward sportier riding.  The riding position and fairing compare to other supersports of the day, and the company eagle soars over a nicely finished machine, this time in the deep red.

This owner’s mods show the sportier side, the factory’s catalyzer traded for a full Termignoni exhaust, and the airbox removed in favor of foam air filters, which also gives a good view of the rear shock.  Fork tube cozies and head guards are a nod to the realities of road riding.  15 years and 30,500 miles on, the owner has been in for the long term and provides a maintenance update in the eBay auction:

I’ve decided to part with this beauty after owning her for 15 years. I’ve owned 2 of these up until a few years ago. I bought this one at Meyers Ducati/Moto Guzzi in Asheville (since closed). I’ve always considered these to be one of the sexiest Italian V twins of the era. I’ve read there were 215 of this year produced. Not sure if that’s accurate. They are getting rare these days and are destined to become more valuable. This Sport 1100 is equipped with a few extremely hard to find after-market performance parts including Termignoni stainless exhaust full system and Marvic wheels, UNI Pod air filters (air box was removed before I got it). It runs strong and starts easily. It’s always had good maintenance, regular valve adjustments, and primarily full synthetic oil. I only run ethanol free premium fuel. Most recently serviced at HCV Motorsports in Asheville NC.

A regular in supersports and thunder-twin race series, the race-developed frame was shared with the 1100 Sport.  The weight can’t be erased but the biked tested as good to hold a line once turned in, and strong torque numbers make the back roads unwind.  No worries about the longevity of the drivetrain, and with a fan’s updates and up-to-date care, this might be a good entrée into a classic sportbike…

Flying Dutchman – 2000 Magni Sfida 1100 in the Netherlands

Originally based on the Moto Guzzi 1000 Le Mans, the Magni Sfida is a tuner-developed special nearly unheard of stateside.  Post-war, Arturo Magni started at Gilera and then ran MV Agusta’s race operations 1950-77, before he and his sons started a design and fabrication shop for low-volume sportbikes based on MV, BMW, Honda, and Guzzi powerplants.

The venerable 1064cc V-twin has two valves per cylinder with twin Dell-Orto’s, and should be worth about 100 hp.  Starting with their own downtube frame, Magni also developed a parallelogram rear suspension, which counteracts the shaft-drive’s tendency to stand up on acceleration.  The design challenge is to keep the wheelbase from getting too long and less nimble, which they achieved by keeping it shorter than a standard V11 Le Mans.  Suspension is fully adjustable at both the upside-down fork and monoshock ends.  Brembo brakes are standard and though the specs say they should be 290mm front disks, this bike may have the option floating brakes as they look more like the 320mm kit.

Pictured in an outdoor workshop on a standard North Sea day, this Sfida looks good with the aluminum tank and monoposto fairing, only apparent damage being to the carbon engine fairings.  Though the auction states this is a 2000 model, it may be earlier since the lister offers to verify the year and by 2000 Magni was offering an injected model.  From the eBay auction:

A very nice and beautiful rare MOTO GUZZI SFIDA 1100 MAGNI.
This bike is from a collector and has only 6100 km (3800 miles)
The bike is from its first owner and he has also the bill of sale from the bike.
Bike has dutch plates and is maintained by a professional mechanic
Has magnesium Marzocchi rims and parts from carbon. Is on the pictures
a little bit modified but all the original parts are there…

20151210 2000 magni sfida 1000 left front

20151210 2000 magni sfida 1000 right rear

For a Guzzi-sti and/or vintage racer, this might be a great import, almost certain to be the only Magni in the show.  A stable, durable platform, the Magni tested as ready for vintage racing when brand new, at least until the law of gravity is repealed.  No denying its beauty though, and making a racer from the Guzzi 1100 is a great engineering exercise.  A compulsory inspection would be worth a side trip, an easy train ride from London or Paris…

Bimota Dreams: 2008 Bimota DB6R with 236 miles!

DB6R_1

From North Carolia comes this beautiful Bimota DB6R with almost no miles at all. How somebody could not ride this air-cooled 1100cc Ducati powered wonder for more that a trip around the block is anyone’s guess, but this only adds “low miles” on top of an already rare status.

DB6R_10

The seller’s ad contains all the pertinent stats of the bike, as well as some Bimota history. There are also plenty of high-res bike porn photos available to show all of the angles of Rimini’s unique take on a naked bike. When new, these were in the rarefied air above $30k. Thankfully, those prices have come down just a bit in the used market.

DB6R_20

From the seller:
Light, powerful and compact, the Bimota DB6R stands for the greatest riding experience you’ll be able to find on two wheels. This exotic, hand-built Italian masterpiece of a motorcycle is assembled with an acute attention to detail using race proven top-shelf components. With only 236 miles on the odometer, it’s an exceptionally rare low mileage curve carver that will out run and out handle just about anything on the road.

DB6R_22

With a reliable and easily serviced Ducati powertrain, this DB6R gives you all the exotic panache of a Bimota with the service know-how and parts availability of Ducati. What is not to like? With top-shelf componentry throughout, this is a head turner and a road burner for sure!

DB6R_27

The seller is asking $21,900 or best offer for this bike. That may seem a bit high for a used Bimota that is 4-5 years old, but with next to no miles on the clock and in what appears to be perfect condition, this bike will still be looking good after another 10-20 years has passed. Click the link to jump over to the auction and check out all of the specs, text and pictures. Good Luck!

1997 Moto Guzzi Daytona RS 1100 In Alabama

A rare Moto Guzzi Daytona RS on eBay!

Bike:  1997 Moto Guzzi Daytona RS

Location:  Foley, Alabama

Mileage:  6,200mi

Price:  $9,000 opening bid with reserve and $13,000 BIN.

The seller states that this bike is museum quality with the majority of the 6,200 miles put on by them.  The bike is cosmetically and mechanically perfect with a recent major service including valve service, fluid flush, and new Michelin Pilot Power’s.  The pictures reflect the claims and this bike looks fantastic.  The seller states that the only modifications from stock are a FI re-programming and polished head guards.

The 1997 Daytona RS is a continuation of the 1996 model which featured the 1100cc motor and chassis tweaks compared to the earlier RS’.  This bike has a claimed output of 102bhp with 71lb-ft of torque which results in a top speed of 145mph.  The suspension is comprised of WP suspension with Brembo brakes.

The Daytona–and 1100 Sport–is easily my favorite road going Moto Guzzi.  It may be because I’m younger and these came out in my formative years but, I still find these dead sexy compared to what is usually released from Lombardy.  I imagine the odd V-Twin and shaft drive was never attractive to anyone who wasn’t a Moto Guzzi fan already–making it difficult to convert new buyers.  If you think 900SS Ducati’s are too prevalent, I’d absolutely consider one of these gorgeous machines.

See this bike on eBay .

1997 Bimota SB6R rolling Sport Bike Art!

1997 Bimota SB6R

Location: Annapolis, MD
Price: $12,000
Mileage: 1400

Found this sweet SB6R today while trolling CL ads. This one looks to be in stellar shape and ready to display or properly flog on your favorite set of twisty roads. I know these have the GSXR 1100 motors and when you pair that with Bimota’s weight saving engineering it can only make this one rip!

Check it out and pick it up here

I haven’t ever seen one of these up for sale; likely because only 10 or so were brought into the US.

1997 Bimota SB6R with 1400 original miles. Kept as a show and display bike, maintained but seldom ridden.

Needs an appreciative rider, these bikes were hand built in Rimini, Italy by craftsmen, using only the finest components. Brembo brakes, Ohlins shocks, Paoli carbon-fiber forks in a hand-built chassis with scads of CF, alloy and Ti components stock. The SB6R has the water-cooler 1100 Suzuki GSXR motor that was tweaked to put out another 10% above stock, making this the fastest, quickest bike that Bimota has ever built; and it still handles like a dream.

This bike is stock and unmolested, making it very collector desireable.

Cheers!
