Supersharp – 1993 Ducati 900 SS Superlight #826

Seeking to continue the excitement on the SuperSport side of the showroom as well as try carbon fiber components on a limited production model, Ducati introduced the Superlight in 1992.  Though just a few gallons of fuel lighter than a standard 900 SS, the Superlight had some nice tweaks, flashy colors, and a neat name.

The SS/SL’s 904 cc desmo mill resulted in its usual 78 hp, with two-valve air cooled simplicity and generous torque band.  Under 1000 were made in any year, and all stateside shipments were speed yellow.  The white trellis frame and magnesium-hubbed Marvic wheels were built lighter, and carbon mudguards provided a small reduction.  The factory mufflers were aluminum, though most have been upgraded to stainless or carbon, swept a bit higher to match the solo seat fairing.

Looking excellent for its 16,188 miles, the SL presented here has the Staintune exhaust, and has been treated to a nice Corbin seat.  Recent heavy maintenance and tires are a strong indication of value.  From the eBay auction:

Offering up my rare, elusive, and MINT condition Superlight.  If you’re reading this then you know what it is.  Only 300 of the imported to the USA in 93′. No reserve!

Recently serviced and dyno tuned at AMS Ducati Dallas, belts included.  BMC filter, stock carbs, polished Staintune exhaust, Marvic wheels, carbon fenders, Michelin Pilot Sport tires almost new, Corbin seat, tinted screen.  Runs, looks, sounds, and rides fantastic.

Most sources show less Superlights were manufactured in 1993, and the factory took some of the lighter parts out of the build.  This bike shows number 826 and is nicely equipped, so it may have been built late in 1992 and shipped in 1993.  However it arrived, it’s a bike that gets to the core riding mission, a no-baggage grin generator.  The starting bid is toward the top of the range, about on par with the condition and preparation of this Superlight…

Light Rider – 1993 Ducati 900 Superlight #718

A limited edition of the Supersport line, the Ducati 900 Superlight was built from 1992-98 in numbers never exceeding 1000 per year.  As often happens the first year was the innovative year and some of the value was engineered out in subsequent years.  The 900 Superlight offered here appears to be a Mk. 1, and though it was victim of a theft and recovery, looks to have some of the early model’s prized lightweight components.

20150812 1993 Ducati 900 SS Superlight left

The beginning of Ducati’s use of carbon fiber on their bikes, the Superlight benefits from its use on the fenders and vented clutch cover.  Lighter also were the Marvic composite wheels, aluminum rims held by magnesium hubs.  This gives the 904cc desmodue less to drag around, having none of its conservative 78 hp to give away.  Showa built the dampers, 41mm upside down forks, monoshock rear, both adjustable.  Brakes are floating disks, generous 320mm twins in front and 245mm out back.  Seeming a close cousin of the 750 F1, the 900 Superlight has a monoposto seat, number plate, and a beautiful endurance-inspired fairing.

This 900 SS/SL has evidently seen some schtuff, a theft and eventual restoration, though it’s quite presentable.  Nice updates include Staintune exhaust, Zero Gravity windscreen, and dual headlight fairing.  As the owner states in the eBay auction:

The bike is mostly stock except some carbon parts, body color painted mirrors, front fender, Statetune exhaust (sounds amazing) and dual headlights. It has 12.9KMi and is running as strong as it should.

I have 2 keys, some manuals, and service records from previous owners. Major service (incl. valves) was done at 9.8KMi and performed by European Cycles Specialties in CA.

Within the last 250 miles motorcycle received a new set of belts, new Michelin PS-III, Mobil-1 oil, flushed clutch and brakes with Castrol SRF fluid (the best fluid you can get).

This Superlight is not a garage queen or concourse winner. It is a riding machine and is very fun. The bike attracts a lot of attention and compliments everywhere I go with it.

Looking very clean, this Superlight might be a gem of a rider in the dreary cloud of a rebuilt title.  If you are a fan of the 900cc Supersport family, a close inspection and test ride is warranted…

Nick Anglada, of Black Label Meccanica is offering this 1993 Ducati 900 Superlight. This example has been mechanically sorted by Nick and is ready for the next riding season. Note I said riding season and not permanent storage in your man cave. This example has over 33k miles, and while it has some wear that is pointed out in the pictures, overall it represents far better than the odometer would suggest. It’s also a first year Superlight, so it has the white frame and trick Marvic wheels that are absent on later model year Superlights. Best of all, most SL’s we see available on the market now are over $10k. Nick has wisely priced his bike at $8,995 and I expect it won’t last long.

We’d like to thank Nick for helping to support the site with a Feature Listing, and good luck to buyers and seller!

1993 Ducati 900 Superlight For Sale on eBay

from the seller:

I am offering this collector’s classic in amazing survivor condition including the original owner’s manual and original tool kit. This bike has been extensively gone through mechanically but not restored cosmetically. This bike is #778 of 953 built between 1992 and 1993. One of only THREE hundred ever imported into the US. research Ducati Superlight registry online and this will confirm the number as will reading Ian Fallon’s book on the Ducati supersports. This model was only available in yellow in the US and only for one year. The only year superlights were ever available with a white frame, Marvic-Akront magnesium hub with aluminum hoop wheels and lightweight clutch cover. Later years (only available abroad) were only available in the gold frame. They were also downgraded to have the heavier brembo cast aluminum wheels and did not have full floating brembo cast iron rotors. Enough with the history lesson on the Superlight now on to the specifics of this bike.

This bike I purchased last July and have acquired interest in other bikes since then. Cosmetically is have done nothing more than to wash the bike, that’s it! This superlight does have some cosmetic flaws as shown in the pics more detailed pics are available on our facebook page or by email. Mechanically I have done the following as the bike sat for over for almost a year from the previous owner.

1. Clutch slave cylinder was rebuilt due to a leak
2. New cam timing belts were installed
3. All filters were replaced and oil was changed
4. Valves were adjusted properly and shimmed to manufacturer’s specs
5. Most of the hardware was replaced with new yellow zinc plated hardware as they were from the factory
6. Had the carbs serviced by the dealer and the bike tuned. tank was drained and treated before instaling a new fuel pump and filter. Fresh fuel just added on 12/30/14.
7. new SpeedCell battery (lithium) instaled04/01/15

What’s NOT original on the bike??

As I am not the first owner I can only provide you with what I have done or what you see in the pictures.

1. Original handlebars were replaced with Helibar risers
2. Original air filter was replaced with a K&N unit
3.Clutch and brake lines were replaced with aftermarket steel braided units by the previous owner
4. Obviously the tires are not original but I highly recommend that the new owner replaces them as they are over 3 years old
5. Exhaust canister are from an FE model
6. Pro Italia Oil Cooler relocator kit was installed by the previous owner. I have original oil cooler and lines as well
7. carbon fenders are either aftermarket ot have been recently refinished

I have additional pictures and I am more than willing to share those with any interested parties. I also have the following.

1. Original owner’s manual in good condition
2. Original tool kit

All the work was performed by me or the local dealer. A short history of who I am can be found on the internet by searching my name (Nick Anglada) . …as long as it’s yellow – 1993 Ducati 900 Superlight

Capitalizing on the 900 Supersport of 1991, Ducati introduced a racier variant in 1992-98 using carbon-fiber single seat bodywork and lighter weight components, but keeping the durable 2-valve 904cc air-cooled engine.  The numbered edition ( all U.S imports were speed yellow ) is a more pure Ducati, with steering stabilizer, upswept exhaust, no passenger seat or pegs, and less compromise for long-ride comfort.

Most information about the 900SL states that much of the niceties of the 1992 were downgraded for 1993, however the vented clutch cover, aluminum swingarm, aluminum rim / magnesium hub Marvic wheels, and floating disks grabbed by gold Brembo calipers appear on this one.

Though Ducati had incorporated DOHC and water cooling in the Superbike line, the Superlight was a handling machine with lower mass and torquey  78hp driving a 6-speed transmission.  Upside-down Showa forks and Showa rear shock were used.

20150323 1993 ducati 900 superlight left detail

This particular bike has been more than a collector with 16,000 miles, but maybe not much recently – from the eBay auction :

22+ year old motorcycle that has not been ridden regularly (collected). Runs but should be gone through by buyer to make sure it is safe to ride if that is the buyer’s intent.

20150323 1993 ducati 900 superlight binacle

Sporting Staintune exhaust ( headers appear to have been jet-coated ) and Corbin seat, this bike’s bodywork and frame look great.  There appears to be a little hangar rash on the left mirror and the headlight needs to be secured.  With new fluids, tires, and belts, it might be a great ticket to a superlative era of Ducati.

Worth Saving – 1993 Ducati 900SS Superlight

1993 Ducati 900SS Superlight on eBay

Ducati900SS_topview

The 900SS falls right in the middle of an interesting period for Ducati.  The SS was subject to years of continuing refinement rather than any dramatic changes, however they were very capable machines by the end.  This 1993 900SS Superlight is perhaps the peak of that refinement.  By this point, it had inherited better brakes from the 851, better Showa suspension, carbon fiber bits all around and a solo seat.  There were only 700 Superlights ever made and reportedly only 300 of them made it to the U.S. so it’s a rare bird for sure.

Ducati900SS_leftside

This one isn’t in the collector condition like some of the ones listed for sale recently, so hopefully that makes the price more attractive for somebody looking for a little bit of a project.  The seller states that this IS a barn find and it needs TLC.  There is some damage to the fairings and tank and I would expect replacements to be all but impossible to find.  Repairing them might be the only option.  However, given the rarity of the Superlight, I think it’s worth saving.  You can read more details from the seller’s auction found here: 1993 Ducati 900SS Superlight on eBay

1 of only 300 imported into the US and number 690 of 700 in the world. Some of these vintage Mk1 Superlights are titled 1992 and some are 1993. This one is a 93, probably because it is a late production bike. 949 original miles, yes nine hundred forty nine miles, maybe the lowest mile Super Light in the country.

This was a modern “Barn Find”, it was covered in a Los Angeles back yard for 18 years, unloved and un-ridden. She is mostly complete and original, the only aftermarket parts are grips, bar-ends, windshield, rear-sets, exhaust hangers, rear sprocket and brake lines. She has all of the Superlight parts still intact: high pipes, carbon fiber front and rear fenders, vented clutch cover, single seat, Mavic wheels and cast iron front rotors.

Ducati Superlight for sale

We’ve seen a fair number of 900SS/SL’s this year and in fact we’ve seen this particular bike as recently as November of last year. At the time of that writing it was showing a $10,900 buy-it-now. This time around it has met reserve at $9100 with a little over a day to go. The seller has updated the listing a couple times with additional details and states that this in fact a 1992 model and the wheels came with the bike, making it a MK1 version which has proven more desirable.

from the seller:

This is a very nicely-maintained 1993 Ducati 900 Superlight, #857. It is a very desirable “MK 1” first series Superlight, with the composite Marvic wheels. It has very low miles (5153) and is in very nice original condition. It has a full Fast by Ferraci exhaust and runs smoothly and flawlessly. The paint is only flawed by minor cracking around the seat mounting screws.

A Corbin seat is installed, as are after-market carbon timing belt covers, chain guard, sprocket cover and dash/instrument cover. Original seat, belt covers and sprocket cover come with the bike, as does the original exhaust. This bike came stock with a carbon front fender and rear hugger, which are in excellent condition.

MK 1 Superlights are rare, especially in this condition, with such low mileage.

Research Ducati Superlight registry online and this will confirm the number as will reading Ian Fallon’s book on the Ducati supersports. This bike I purchased recently and have acquired another since then. Cosmetically is have done nothing more than to wash the bike, that’s it! Mechanically I have done the following as the bike sat for over three years from the previous owner.

1. Dissambled the engine to repaint and check neccesary maintenance items an check for deffects,
2. Clutch slave cylinder was rebuilt due to a leak that caused the paint to peel on the engine cover and left side engine case
3. New cam timing belts were installed
4. New later issue Ducati cylinder heavy duty head studs were installed due to the fact that before 1995 the studs were made of satinless and prone to breaking
5. All gaskets ,seals and filters were replaced including base gaskets
6. Valves were adjusted properly and shimmed to manufacturer’s specs
7. All bearings were checked for wear
8. Oil pump was replaced for no other eason than it is 20 years old and why take a chance??

What’s NOT original on the bike??

As I am not the first owner I can only provide you with what I have done or what you see in the pictures.

1. Smoke rear brake lense, I have a stock one That was not available to be at the time these pictures were taken
2. Windscreen was replaced by the previous owner , stock ones are still availabe from Ducati for a cool $163
3. Original Bar end weights were replaced with aftermarket bits from the previous owner
4. Original air fileter was replaced with a BMC unit
5. Crank case breather box was removed and replaced with a K&N breather. I have the originals in a box with the correct breather hoses and clamps
6. Ferracci decals on the side panels were applied by the previous owner because the bike had a ferracci exhaust which he kept to apply to another Ducati
7.Clutch and brake lines were replaced with aftermarket steel braided units by the previous owner
8. Tank breather check valve hose was replaced with a yellow unit, I also have the originals in a box and bagged so they do not dry rot
9. There is a very nice support that one of the previous owners built for the rear seat section so it would not crack. And it worked!
10. Obviously the tires are not original but I highly recommend that the new owner replaces them as they are over 5 years old

I have taken extensive picture of any of the work I have performed and I am more than willing to share those with any interested parties. I also have documentation of the previous purchase from the former owner including the following.

1. Sales order from the dealer
2. Auto Tarder ad showing teh sale price when he bought it in 2001 previous to that it was owner by the dealer who sold it as a personal bike
3. Paper tag issued at that sale
4. Original owner’s manual in good condition
5. Original tool kit

All the work was performed by me. A short history of who I am can be found on the internet by searching my ebay screen name. These look very racy but are actually quite agreeable to touring, even with the Keihin carbs. The seller is asking $10k or best offer.
