1993 Ducati 888 SPO on ebay w/ no reserve!

Yet another 888 SPO for sale on .  This one caught me a little off guard because it is being offered with no reserve!  With that said, this could be a great deal for someone.

13

The owner has done some extensive modifications that are as follows.  They also list an interesting disclaimer on their ebay auction so make sure you read carefully.

GP front brake master cylinder
916 throttle & push button choke assembly
Air box mod w/ K&N filter
Fender eliminator kit
Upgraded ECU chip
Billet upper & lower triple clamps
Billet rear sets
JMC swing arm (stock included)
Carbon exhaust hangers
Termignoni slip-ons
Marvic wheels

Bike has 12,818 miles on it which is low for a 93 and located in Huntington Beach, CA.  I think I prefer the stock upper fairing better, but then again who am I to pass judgment?  The Marvic wheels and JMC swing arm make for a very nice touch.  You can compare this one to our other 851/888 posts by clicking here.

1993 Ducati 888 SPO: Yep Another One!!

Here’s another rare sportbike out of the San Francisco bay area; another 1993 Ducati 888 SPO for sale on Craigslist:

1988 Ducati 888 SPO For Sale in San Francisco1988 Ducati 888 SPO For Sale in San Francisco1988 Ducati 888 SPO For SaleDucati 888 SPO For Sale

quote from seller’s Craigslist listing:

FOR SALE: A beautiful 1993 888 SPO with 13,700 miles. Your chance to own a piece of history, the last of the hand built Ducatis and the father to the 916. 1 of 200 imported into the USA in 1993 to meet homologation requirements for AMA racing. A truly special machine that helped Ducati win the World Superbike Championship in 1991 and 1992, hence the #1 on the tail section.

Purchased in 2000 with 5,200 miles. Service records since then for major service intervals i.e. belts, valves and throttle body synch done by BCM Ducati in NH as well as by Desmoto in San Francisco.

Bike is stock and in excellent condition. Some minor scratches and chips from riding it. Runs perfectly and is very clean. Has factory rear stand included. Sadly it must go since I only have room for one Italian mistress in the stable.

Please call or email me for more details and pics. Pipes and front discs on bike in photo are not stock and not included.

With a $10888 asking (clever), this is one of the more expensive triple eights to be listed on this blog. While most Ducatisti will agree this where they should be, I think this seller may have a long wait before finding a buyer considering what other examples here in the states have been going for.

1993 Ducati Superbike 888 SPO: Just In Time For Christmas

That make 4 Ducati 888‘s listed on this blog for sale this year! If you’ve been waiting, this looks like another good one.

1993 Ducati Superbike 888 SPO on eBayMotors for $8300:

quote from seller’s eBayMotors listing:

Hello & Good day! Up for auction is my 1993 Ducati 888 SPO. There were reportedly only 300 sent to the USA and I’ve got one of them! She is in great condition with many upgrades. She has been meticulously maintained and looked after. Got her in 2000 with 8k+ and I’ve put only 3.5k+ miles since then. Oil & filter changed regularly. She had just gotten a timing belt change, injector synch, brand new Michelin Pilot Powers front and rear and new battery all done within the past 500 miles. Amenities speaking, she has an upgraded Brembo GP radial Front Master Cylinder, Blue Kevlar Front and Rear Brake lines, new EBC Black front and rear brake pads, Corbin Solo Seat, Carbon Fiber Front and Rear Fenders, Fast by Ferracci Carbon Fiber Exhaust, Tinted Windscreen and Vented Clutch Cover. There are no mechanical issues to report. She will be a turn the key and run type of bike. I need to state that there is a minute dime-sized ding on the right side of the tank; it is really unnoticeable from the pictures. I also took the liberty of lining the extreme bottom of the left and right side fairings with Hercules Truck Bed Liner; I really got annoyed at how much pebbles and road debris tore up the bottom side red paint.

The only other Ducati’s of this vintage and price range that I would consider would be a 748, or a Superlight. And even in that company, I think the 888 is the bike of choice.

1993 Ducati 888 SPO: Yep Another One For Sale!

This 888 SPO is being sold in San Francisco for $11.5k on Craigslist. It sure looks like a cream puff and the owner’s description sounds like this bike has been a labor of love.

quote from seller’s Craigslist ad:

1993 888SPO. Excellent, almost flawless condition. 8470 miles. Fully maintained, oil changed every 500 – 1000 miles. Valves, belts, and all fluids at around 8k miles. FBF chip, modified airbox, Termi cans. CF fender & hugger, Pro Italia CF under tail kit. Ohlins shock. 41 tooth rear sprocket. New Pirelli Corsa 3’s. Great runner. All stock equipment and manuals included. Everyone that sees this bike and knows about them tells me to never sell it.

The seller joined the discussion on the Yahoo 851/888 mailing list and states the bike is being sold as a result of divorce. Someone help this guy out!

1993 Ducati Superbike 888 SPO: So Are These Rare or Not?

Of course I’m joking, but with two listed already on this blog alone since July, I’m surprised that this rare model has surfaced as much as it has. Take a look at this Ducati 888 SPO for sale on eBaymotors:

quote from seller’s eBay listing:

This is a beautiful, classic machine, carefully kept to look and run well. Even now people ask if it is new. 10726 miles.

There are several 851/888 types out there; this SPO is Ducati’s flagship US superbike road model for 1993; a few hundred were made. Liquid-cooled, fuel injected, “desmoquattro” with a Showa front fork and Ohlins rear shock. Mono seat with lightweight fiberglass tail section with “Campione Del Mondo Superbike” graphics and a big number “1”.

All major service performed by Renaissance Motorcycles in Tucson. The bike was originally sold new at Renaissance. I am the third owner and also bought it there in 1998. This bike has seen a few track days but I have never raced it.

Modifications:

* Aftermarket carbon pipes and ECU chip installed by previous owner. These make the sweet thunder you expect. Original factory pipes will be included.
* Aftermarket voltage regulator keeps the battery charged much better than the original factory part.
* Rear fender/license plate hanger modified for a cleaner look. I have a spare unused original rear fender which will be included.
* Kevlar brake lines.
* K&N air filter.

Condition:

* Always garaged.
* Oil/filter and coolant just changed.
* Airbox and intake unmodified.
* Battery replaced earlier this year. I keep the bike on a Battery Tender.
* Cam belts are due for replacement.
* Tires are Michelin Pilot Sports with low miles but several years old.
* Current Arizona registration (passes emissions test).
* Paint etc. very nice but not concours ready.
* No crashes or engine blowups; this bike is still largely as originally built in Borgo Panigale.

I was first alerted of this sale because I subscribe to the Ducati-851-888 Yahoo Group. These guys not only know of all the 888’s on the market, they also know 851 and 888 Superbikes inside and out. A must join if you’re of the faithful.

Recently the group has suggested that the market is a bit softer and good deals can be had between $7-9k. What do you think a solid, documented, and low miles 888 SPO is worth? Leave a comment and share your experience!

Update 10.9.08 – Auction ended with reserve met at $6900. Congrats to the new owner on what looks like a fantastic buy!

1993 Ducati 888 SPO For Sale in Santa Barbara

Here’s a nice low miles Ducati 888 SPO for sale in California. The 888 is final evolution of the 851 Superbike and is the precursor to legendary Ducati 916.

quote from seller’s Craigslist Ad:

A very clean example of an early Superbike. Upgraded Renegade carbon exhaust cans, Goldline controls w/ CRG levers, white Marchesini wheels, clutch slave, Barnett clutch basket/ clutch plates, Speedymoto pressure plate. Only 9,400 miles. Always garaged and kept very clean. A beautiful bike to add to a your stable.

The 888 has a cult following and prices are on the rise. With a character all it’s own, this looks nice at $10.5k. Still not convinced? Check out this great 888 video (not the bike for sale) on YouTube:

1993 Ducati 888SPO Superbike

OK where do I start.  Well firstly I have to own up and tell you that this is in fact my own personal bike:

1993 Ducati 888SPO on eBay

It is a 1993 Ducati 888SPO which was only produced for two years.  The model is specific to the USA and was designed to homologate the 888 for AMA Superbike racing. 1993 was the first year the bike was introduced and saw a total a total of 290 built that year for the US market.  A further 100 were made in ’94 with some subtle changes.  The 888 engine was an evolution of the 851 and the bike shares the same basic chassis however the bodywork was tidied up a touch and this version has Ohlins suspension on the rear with Showa forks.  The stock bike was rated at 100 hp but normal once you put in a new FIM chip and some FBF exhaust that number goes up. The SPO has a close European cousin which is the 888 SP5.  The difference is the engine, the SP5 unit was not able to pass US emission regulations and so the SP5 chassis was married to the 888 Strada engine and so you have a model in the SPO that is unique to the US market.

Since this model was for homologation Ducati used rather nice components, Brembo gold line calipers, Ohlins rear suspension, Marchesini wheels etc.  It is a beauty to ride and sounds oh so sweet and always gets a wave from someone who appreciates it.  It certainly saddens me to have to part with it but alas I am moving to Spain and cannot take the bike with me.  I just hope it goes to a good home.

And in case you wonder what they sound like:
