Smoke ‘Em if Ya Got ‘Em: Arizona-Titled 1987 Yamaha TZR250 for Sale

You know, it gets harder and harder to come up with smoking-related titles for these two-stroke posts… We may no longer allow tobacco companies to advertise in racing, but it seems to be a natural fit, considering the dangers involved in both activities and especially in the case of smoky, environmentally-unfriendly two-stroke machines. It’s also hard to argue that the tobacco companies didn’t come up with some of the best-looking graphics and color combinations of all time: Rothmans, John Player, and Marlboro as seen on today’s Yamaha TZR250.

A follow up to the very successful RD line, the TZR250 1KT was the very first generation of Yamaha’s liquid-cooled parallel twin sports machine introduced in 1986, and was also referred to as the “2MA,” depending on the market. It was definitely a big jump ahead in terms of performance compared to the RG250 and NS250R of the same period, and pretty much set the template for the class: aluminum beam frame, fully-enclosed bodywork, and a six-speed gearbox. Unlike other bikes in the class and even the later TZRs that used an 18″ rear wheel, the 1KT had 17″ wheels at both ends.

Of course no quarter-liter two-stroke would be complete without some form of powervalve, and the TZR came with Yamaha’s YPVS or “Yamaha Power Valve System” that helped to boost midrange performance. The claimed 50hp from this model may be a bit optimistic, but the 282lb dry machine was certainly light and very nimble.

This is a nice example of an early TZR. If you have been looking for an RZ350 or something similar check out the TZR250 1KT, feels somewhere in between a 125 and a 250 yet has around 50 HP, the very reliable parallel twin engine and awesome handling. I imported this bike in 2015 and it was a nice lower mile example but with some paint issues. I just had the entire bike repainted in a Wayne Rainey-esque Marlboro paint scheme and I think it came out pretty good. Stock colors were normal Yamaha red/white (see stock photos for reference).This bike will make a nice rider, it is not a showroom example however it is a low mile survivor with little corrosion, all original factory bodywork and new paint. Few of any 1KT TZR’s survive in very good condition. Mechanically the bike is solid. 

I did a full service on it less than 20 miles ago. Fresh 50/50 coolant, Motorex Synthetic trans oil, fresh brake flush and fluid front and rear and synthetic DOT 4. Has Motul 710 synthetic two stroke oil and oil injection in place. If you plan to do any really spirited riding I would put fresh rubber on it. Wheels are original, I had planned to powdercoat them but they were borderline nice enough to keep factory original.

The bike is 100% stock save for a Daytona fork brace. Starts with 1 or 2 kicks every time. It runs very good, pulls clean to redline, rides straight, stops straight. It has signs of being dropped on the right in the past but no major damage, just rash which is till evident on clutch cover and brake master.  There is an unfortunate crack on the left ear of the upper which happened when I had the bodywork shipped back to me, but the upper stay and windscreen along with mirror keeps everything tight, solid and in place. There is some light corrosion on top nut, fork lowers, rotor etc but nothing terrible and teh frame is very nice…especially for being 30 years old. This is an overall nice example. 10,700 Km or roughly 6,650 original miles.

I have a set of Japanese Noguchi expansion chambers with silencers that will fit the bike (or the TDR I have listed) that I will sell for $550. I also have another set of 1KT stock exhaust that can go with the bike as well if wanted. Overall it is a really fun and good looking TZR that will draw a crowd wherever you ride it, please check out the pictures closely, contact me with any questions or if you need more photos OF ANY PART OF THE BIKE!

This example isn’t perfect or original, but the seller is very up-front about that and the bike seems honestly represented. Bidding is up over $3,700 with a full week left on the auction. Values of 250cc sportbikes have been headed steadily upward over the past year, although TZRs have trailed the rest of the pack a bit, especially the 1KT. The seller’s $6,200 Buy It Now price is right on the money for a good two-stroke, but it remains to be seen how the aftermarket paint will affect values of this particular bike.

Full Power: 1996 Suzuki RGV250SP VJ23A Export Model for Sale

The history of the quarter-liter sportbike seems to be one of convergent evolution: twins obviously make sense given the size and capacity, or even triples, if we go back to the 1970s and consider a Kawasaki S1 a “sportbike.” But early bikes could be powered by parallel or vee configurations, and by the time the early 1990s rolled around, Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki were all using  90° v-twins backed by six-speed gearboxes. But when the 70° v-twin powered RGV250 VJ23 came along in 1996, it was packing a 70° unit with a dry clutch [and an electric start!], presumably because it’s more compact and doesn’t increase vibration significantly, compared to a 90° unit with theoretically better balance.

The VJ23 was pretty much the final word in two-stroke performance: the Suzuki-powered Aprilia RS250 continued in production alongside, but used their earlier 90° v-twin engine. Honda’s NSR250 was still in production as well, but their MC28 was introduced in 1994 so the VJ23 really does represent the very last generation of two-stroke performance

I’m not a huge fan of the swoopy curves of the VJ23 model, although plenty of two-stroke fans love the very 90s styling. Maybe the graphics aren’t helping: the VJ23 definitely looks much cooler in Lucky Strike colors. But you certainly can’t argue with the performance available: today’s example is claimed to be the full power “export” model, meaning it’s not limited per Japanese market rules that restricted power to 45hp on models intended for sale domestically, and 60 claimed horsepower should make this little bantamweight a real rocket, with handling to match.

Experts may want to chime in here: these were supposedly extremely rare in any form, and I’m not clear if this has simply been de-restricted or if it came from the factory with all the horsepower present and accounted for.

The Buy It Now price is listed at $9,400 which would seem very reasonable if the bike was here in the USA, considering what nice NSRs are going for these days. Obviously, the fact that this bike is currently in Japan means the buyer will have to deal with all the importation and titling hassles. If you’re in a permissive state, that might not be too much of a headache, but for many of us, it remains out of reach, considering the year of manufacture means it’s still a few years short of the 25-year mark. Depending on your local DMV, there might be some shenanigans you can pull to get it on the street, but I’d expect this makes the most sense as a collectible or occasional track day ride.

Featured Listing: 1991 Suzuki RGV250 VJ22A for Sale

 

Today’s Featured Listing Suzuki RGV250 is part of the rare and weird collection that the seller has been liquidating over the past few weeks. It may not be museum-quality, but it has obviously been well cared-for and would make a great weekend rider, assuming you live somewhere it can be titled. Rare and desirable here in the USA, Suzuki’s RGV250Γ was basically the GSX-R of two-stroke sportbikes: it was fast, a bit wild, and ubiquitous in markets where it was sold new.

But here in the USA, these little Gammas are extremely difficult to find. Go looking for a Honda NSR250 at any given time, and you’ll likely come up with at least something. But RGVs are pretty few and far between, in any condition. In fact, here in the US, the closest many of us may have come to the RGV is the Aprilia RS250 that is much more common and uses the same engine, with some minor tuning and cosmetic differences. 

The 250cc two-stroke sportbikes of the period seemed cut from the same cloth, although each managed to have its own character: light and stiff aluminum beam frame, liquid-cooled two-stroke parallel or v-twin engine, some form of power valve technology, a six-speed gearbox, sub-300lb dry weight, and lots of proprietary acronyms plastered across the fairings. In this VJ22’s case you’ll note “SAPC” or “Suzuki Advanced Power Control,” an electronic power valve and ignition timing system to boost the 55-ish horsepower 90° twin’s meager midrange. Earlier VJ21s had 17″ front and 18″ wheels, updated here in the VJ22 to a pair of 17″ hoops that should give a wider choice of modern rubber. Weight for the VJ22 was up a bit over previous models, largely owing to that beautiful but complex and heavy asymmetrical “banana” swingarm that left space on the right-hand side of the bike for the bulging expansion chambers that fed those sexy shotgun exhausts.

Saved the best for last! This will be the last Suzuki RGV250 up for auction. The honey hole is drying up quickly.

Up for auction to the highest bidder with NO RESERVE is a 1991 Suzuki RGV250 VJ22A with only 8,780 kilometers (5,455 miles) on the odometer. This RGV runs like the day it was new. I don’t know the service history but it sure pulls like its been de restricted. Speedometer has been changed to a 300KPH clock so actual mileage is unknown. We see lots of these 250’s with speedo’s changed from the stock 180kph clocks to 300kph. This RGV has scratches throughout the bike. Tank looks like new. Mirrors and front fender show sun fade. The lower center V-fairing behind the front wheel has a broken tab and has a crack that needs to be fixed. Bike has great curb appeal and looks very nice. Bike comes tastefully upgraded with after market pipes and stingers, aftermarket levers and grips and steel braided brake lines. All fairings are 100% OEM Suzuki factory.

Bike comes with Utah state title and is titled as a Bstreet motorcycle for road use.

Scratches and scrapes throughout. Now there’s an honest assessment from the seller, and should give potential buyers a good idea of what to expect here: it’s clean, but definitely a used motorcycle. Those Brembo front brakes don’t look original but should be a worthwhile upgrade. The levers and grips maybe not so much, but those are easily changed to suit your taste. It isn’t perfect but, as stated earlier, might make a great weekend rider or a rolling restoration. You’ll have to source parts from overseas, but the internet is a wonderful thing and most of what you need should be available to keep an RGV running.

Odd Import: 1983 Honda MVX250F

In the world of import two strokes, you may be intimately familiar with RGs, NSRs, RZs and the like. What you don’t hear much about is the MVX. One of the oddities of the popcorn set, the MVX represents Honda’s engineering might coupled with a healthy dose of experimentalism. Unlike the RD/RZ/RG set with parallel twins (or later, the RG V-twins), Honda pulled a page from their GP racing manual and created a V-3 triple cylinder machine. With a configuration similar to the Ducati L-twin layout – but with two front cylinders – the MVX was no wider than a parallel twin while showcasing an extra cylinder. Balancing the odd number of reciprocating parts was accomplished via a slightly heavier connecting rod on the 3rd, upright cylinder. The result was 49 horsepower at 9,000 RPM, with redline starting at 10,500 RPM.

You would be forgiven to pass this off as a glorified moped – with flashy graphics but no street creds. After all, is that a drum brake up front?? In reality, what appears to be a drum brake is actually a clever inboard single disk. The centralized location eliminates the torque created by traditionally-situated single disk implementations, although heat buildup during extreme use would continue to plague the setup. Honda eventually adopted a conventional twin disk arrangement for the NS-series of bikes that were to follow.

The seller has done a good job providing photos and video of the bike in question. Like the last bike from this seller, this MVX lacks any title. Given that the MVX never came near US shores (Japan and Pacific Rim countries were the sole recipients), getting this one licensed for road use might be a bit dicey. For its age and origination, this bike looks to be in great shape (which is not always the case with overseas imports). As always, RSBFS recommends that you do your homework and plan ahead if you have a hankering to act.

If you decide to act, better bring your wallet – the opening ask for this one is $5,800. We have not had enough history with these bikes to really derive a value, so it will be interesting to watch this one and see where it goes. Fresh off the boat from Japan, this Suzuki RGV250 Γ “Gamma” is the higher-spec SP model that featured fully-adjustable suspension, along with a close-ratio gearbox and a dry clutch. 1988 was the first year of the RGV that replaced the parallel-twin of the RG250 with a new, 90° 249cc v-twin engine that also found its way into the Aprilia RS250. Designated the “VJ21” this first-generation RGV used Suzuki’s sophisticated aluminum beam frame, but lacked the later bike’s stacked exhaust and sexy banana swingarm that allowed space for that bike’s bulging expansion chambers.

The complete package made around 50hp and weighed around 282lbs dry, so performance is deceptively good, considering the relatively small displacement. But more importantly, these machines are notoriously high-strung, requiring real effort to extract the modest power and skill to take advantage of that light weight and nimble handling. The result is performance that can embarrass more powerful machines on track and on the road when used properly. For Real Riders™ this kind of involvement is critical to the motorcycle experience and makes for epic David vs. Goliath stories shared over lunch.

This bike also features a solo tail section, which at first seems a shame. I mean, what rider doesn’t dream about taking some hot, young thing on the back for a midnight ride, the capstone of the typical motorcycle fantasy? But sexy as they may be, sportbikes are generally impractical for taking passengers and, considering the RGV250’s tiny, tiny size, maybe it’s best that this is a rider-only machine…

Up for auction is 1988 Suzuki RGV250 Gamma SP Model. SP Model has adjustable suspension, close ratio transmission, and this one has custom racing single seat. It just arrived from Japan. All electric works, engine, brake, suspension work too. Only needs tire: getting old so needs new one. Have a short movie on YouTube.
Got paper work you need to register but don’t know how much do you need. Please check your local DMV. Odometer shows 3124km (about 1952.5 miles) but seems like too low, I assume it has been replaced? Don’t know but it goes 1000 to 1100rpm. Right side plastic has crack but it has been fixed. 
The seller also helpfully includes a clip of the bike starting and running. The bike is in generally decent condition, although that solo tail is obviously not the original part, and the stock piece appears to be long-gone. Aesthetic choice or crash-repair? Many of these sat outside in their home market: garage space is at a premium in Japan. And build-quality was never all that high for these quarter-liter sportbikes, so most of these making their way here will need some cosmetic attention.

There’s still plenty of time left on the auction, with a $4,300.00 starting bid and no takers as yet.  Those two little letters “S” and “P” mean it should prove popular among collectors and folks who live in places where registration entails nothing more than a duly-appointed state representative looking at your ride and saying, “Yup. That’s a motorcycle.” It’s not a dead-stock museum-piece, but I expect that’ll be reflected in the final selling price, so someone may get a good deal on machine that’s very rare here in the US.

This little smoker is freshly imported and titled. The seller states that it needs some elbow grease to get it to shine after years of sun exposure. With under 12k miles, the current winning bid is just $2,375. I doubt we’ll get to see the end of the auction but could be a great project for not much cash.

Just imported through US Customs this summer, this 1987 NSR250r comes with a US title ready to be transferred into your name in your state. Here’s the YouTube video of this bike showing running condition before it was shipped to the United States: youtube.com/watch?v=1v_1HhCDPMA
This NSR250 is showing just 11,146 original miles (17,937 kilometers) on the odometer so it is a clean, lower mileage bike but the sun has not been kind however as the bodywork is paint faded and the stickers, etc. faded too. A light color sanding or polishing compound will bring back the paint and plastic polish will restore the windshield so a little elbow grease will go along way with this NSR. The fairing bodywork is original and un-cracked and the seat is in good condition too. Newer tires front and back, triple drilled discs and a hidden dual seat option make for nice features on this bike. There are 2 small dings barely visible in the top of the tank (probably from a tank bag), I tried to get them to show up in the pictures but they are small so you really can’t see them. All in all a very clean used 250R, I have 5 more pictures that eBay won’t let me upload-send me your email address and I’ll get them to you.

I can get great shipping rates (anywhere in California for $300 as an example) so don’t let the cost of shipping keep you from owning this collectible Japanese two-stroke streetbike. This motorcycle is already USA titled and ready to be transferred into your name so US Customs documents and EPA documents are not needed but I will include them in the sale of this bike so you have documentation this NSR was legally imported. Quarter-Liter Gamma: 1988 Suzuki RGV250Γ SP VJ21 for Sale

Unfortunately, today’s tasty little two-stroke Suzuki RGV250Γ SP is short on photographs. It’s another of the raft of recent imports from Japan, and details are scarce, but the price may have you reaching for your mouse anyway.

The RGV250Γ replaced the RG250 in 1988, swapping out that bike’s parallel-twin for a more modern v-twin that eventually found its way into the Aprilia RS250, although Aprilia made a number of changes to their version. On paper, the new baby Gamma looked very much like its rivals from Honda and Yamaha, like they were all peeking at each others’ essays during final exams…

Nestled in between the spars of a lightweight, aluminum beam frame, the little 249cc, 90° v-twin made about 55hp and was mated to a six-speed gearbox. Front wheel was 17″ although the rear was a slightly inconvenient 18″ in size. This bike is claimed to be an SP or “Sport Production” model and should also feature adjustable suspension front and rear.

The headlight on the RGV is mounted flush in the fairing and looks less like an afterthought compared to something like the Honda RS250R and I particularly like the text on the tail section: considering the GSX-R “Slingshot” bikes were named for their carburetors, I’m guessing this is simply a marketing link to those models as opposed to a reference to any mechanical specification. It’s also good to know this is a Real Sprinter bike, not just some fake knock-off…

Was very clean when it left Japan but I found a scratch on right side cowl.

Other than that, this is very clean. Still shining.

Had no leak but found fuel under petcock.

It’s worth noting that the shot of the left side does show fluids spilled down the frame which have been helpfully cleaned off in the close up. The question is why you’d photograph a bike you plan to sell before cleaning it. Really this listing could use a few more shots, but I think we’ve got enough to tell that this is a decent, well-used example of a rare, collectible model: the paint is shiny and the plastics are scuffed in places, but not cracked, and all the important bits that make the bike stop and go appear to be in good shape.

Bidding is currently up just north of $4,000 with a little more than 24 hours left on the auction. If you’re a collector, this probably needs a good bit of work to get it into shape, but everything’s there and a fresh set of fasteners and a touch up of some brackets will do wonders for the appearance. If you’re a rider, well the cosmetic wear and tear shouldn’t bother you too much. Assuming the bike runs as advertised, this could be a good buy.
