Grown-up Hooligan – 1996 Suzuki GSX-R1100

Most buyers’ guides advise to purchase the latest edition of a particular model, capitalizing on improvements and technical advances.  First built in 1986, the GSX-R1100 spanned twelve great sportbike years, and those interested in the model can choose from very different rides depending on the letter code.  This late model has been hidden away with under 2,000 miles and despite 20-plus years appears complete and undamaged.

Always a speed demon’s machine, the 1986 model came with 137 hp and after a major engine re-design in 1989 and the adoption of water cooling in 1993, the 1996 machine had 156 hp on tap.  Frame stiffness advanced as well with the use of 5-sided tubing, and an earlier banana swingarm was superceded by a fabricated and braced swingarm for 1995.  More sculpted than the earlier endurance racing derived bodies, the 1996 model streamlined its way to nearly 170 mph.  As ever, weight increased as the model grew up, cresting 500 lbs. dry for the 1996 year.

No word in the auction about how this GT came to have so few miles, but does give an unfaired peek-a-boo.  Just a monthly ride up the Palisade Parkway from Englewood to Bear Mountain would have put a lot more on the odometer than its 1,675 miles.  Freshly detailed with a fancy Corbin saddle, it has somehow outsmarted the garage elves, except for the left rear turn signal.  From the eBay auction:

As always, I defer to sharper-eyed experts and welcome the model year and graphics debate.  Pictures can fib, so until a real inspection is made, condition is an open question.  New fluids, seals, rubber, four carburetor rebuilds, and some tuning are all on the menu for returning this GSX-R to the road.  What can’t be denied is a 156 hp superbike without advanced electronics, and the way time will slow for the next owner on some late summer day…

Literally Found in a Barn: 1989 Suzuki GSX-R1100 for Sale

The term “barn find” pretty much says it all: the collectible car or motorcycle in question was found sitting in an actual barn, where the previous owner stored it when it stopped running. Possibly hidden under a layer of dust, old blankets, back issues of Playboy, and mold. The implication is that it is in complete, original condition, but has been somewhat neglected cosmetically and mechanically. The term gets thrown around regularly as a sort of shorthand for “original, low-miles, and in need of restoration,” but seems to be exactly the case for this Suzuki GSX-R1100K “Slingshot.”

The second generation GSX-R1100’s nickname came from the quartet of 38mm semi-flatslide Mikuni “Slingshot” carburetors that fed the dual overhead cam, four-valve, inline four engine. It actually displaced 1127cc, up a bit from the original’s 1052cc, but still featured Suzuki’s Advanced Cooling System or “SACS” to keep things within optimal temperatures. SACS used a multi-chamber oil pump to effectively cool and circulate the oil, with circuits in the cylinder head and jets directed at the pistons. Later GSX-R1100s adopted a more conventional set up with a radiator and coolant, but here Suzuki stuck with the concept that simpler was better and lighter, although the Big K isn’t exactly a flyweight. Mass continued to creep up throughout the 1100’s successive generations and the new frame used here was both stiffer and heavier than the one found on the Slabbie. With a dry weight of 462lbs, the “K” version was never going to be particularly agile, so it was more of a GT than an actual sportbike, something that Suzuki tried to rectify the following year when they made changes to the suspension.

Unfortunately, the GSX-R1100K never really matched up with expectations: I have an old issue of SuperBike magazine that describes it as “… quite pretty. To look at, sure, but never to ride.” But it’s really the beefy engine that defines the GSX-R1100 experience anyway. It was a powerhouse, the Small Block Chevy of the time: endlessly tunable with a wealth of performance parts available. People set them up for drag racing, and even created road-race hybrids by squeezing the 1100 engine into the GSX-R750, which is pretty much the same idea Bimota had when they built their lightweight and extremely quick SB6, although it was a very tight fit in both cases…

Of course, a GSX-R1100 by its very nature isn’t necessarily all that uncommon, but ones in this kind of condition are very rare these days: the powerful engine, reasonable ergonomics, and good wind protection meant they got used as intended, racking up huge miles, battle scars, and less-than-tasteful aesthetic “upgrades” popular at the time. People looking to make them into the corner-carvers the looks advertised tried all manner of fixes that worked or didn’t in varying degrees, but the end result was very few remain as delivered by Suzuki, and even fewer have covered so few miles. With just 722 miles on the odometer, I doubt you’ll find a less used example anywhere outside a museum.

1989 Suzuki GSXR 1100 perfect condition with 722 miles,  was a barn find been stored since 1991 but not climate control storage literally in a barn. The bike was redone but didn’t need much as the miles are so low. The body was completely done to perfect factory spec’s no cracks or any problems, the wheels are original but do have a bit of chips,  bike runs great and needs nothing. The seller’s opening bit is set at $7,000 which seems pretty fair considering the condition and low miles, but there are no takers yet with very little time left on the auction. It’s a shame the pictures aren’t better lit, since I think this is the very best-looking version of the long-running GSX-R series, especially in classic Suzuki blue-and-white. If you’re looking to actually ride it, I’d expect there are plenty of shops out there who can recommend suspension changes to make a Slingshot handle, probably using off-the-shelf Suzuki components, along with brake upgrades and weight saving measures. At the very least, you can probably swap the original 2-into-2 exhaust for a 4-into-1 and save 20 pounds. But honestly, the original bike offered plenty of stability, even if it lacked agility, and this one should probably be enjoyed for what it is: a freeway blaster par excellence or a great two-up weekend rider. Given the low mileage though, I’d bet it might end up stored away in a collection somewhere.

Number One: Prototype 1986 Suzuki GSX-R1100 for Sale

Although displacement was technically a bit more than a liter, the first generation Suzuki GSX-R1100 really established the modern literbike formula: take a big inline four engine, and squeeze it into a 600 or 750 sized package. The philosophy that created the iconic Gixxer was initially tried out with Suzuki’s GSXR400, and the result was so good they applied the same lightweight methodology to a 750cc machine, and the GSX-R750 was born in 1985, with the 1100cc version following in 1986. Frames of the 750 and 1100cc versions aren’t identical, but are pretty similar, with the 1100 using thicker square-section aluminum tubing to increase rigidity and handle the extra power of the larger engine.

The 1100 engine actually displaced 1052cc and shared its SACS oil-cooling system with the 750cc version: in both cases, Suzuki avoided the additional weight and complexity that water-cooling would bring by using air and oil to keep the twin-cam, four-valve engine within appropriate operating temperatures. But the high-performance engine needed some additional help to keep from exploding, so the Suzuki Advanced Cooling System used a complex oil pump to circulate oil, lubricate bearings, cool the heads, and even featured oil jets directed at the bottom of the pistons. With 137hp on tap, the big Slabbie was a bit of a monster, as it had just 489lbs dry to push around. That’s obviously not hugely impressive today, but keep in mind that the bike’s 75lb-ft of torque isn’t all that far off a modern superbike and meant that the big Gixxer could pull like a freight train.

The 1100 wasn’t exactly agile, but it did handle well for the time on its 18” wheels with tires that are laughably skinny by today’s standards. The 1100 featured a set of sophisticated anti-dive forks and Suzuki’s Full-Floater linkage rear suspension kept the power in check, while providing a less punishing ride than was typical of hard-core sportbikes of the era. A modern-ish brake set up with a catchy Deca-Piston name slowed things down for the next bend: a pair of four-piston calipers up front mated to a twin piston item in the rear meant ten whole speed-retarding pistons were on hand to keep you from crashing into a hedge when the world turned twisty after you got a bit too liberal with your right hand. It all added up to a bike that was a little on the heavy side, but one that offered good stability and world-class power, a wildly fast GT with Japanese reliability. Obviously, companies like Bimota used the same elements to create their lightweight road weapons prior to the introduction of the GSX-R, but Suzuki took that basic formula, added a dash of reliability, and brought it to the masses.

Being able to own an original, genuine, verifiable with factory documentation, unrestored Vin-1/Engine-1 vehicle of any type, make or model has got to be at the top of most collectors list of must-have‘s.

The vehicle being a top displacement model from one of the major motorcycle manufacturers should make it even more desirable

Mid-1985 build earliest prototype Suzuki GSX-R1100 in existence

Was the secret ‘Star’ in our small personal bike collection for many years

Verifiably a genuine Serial No.1 and Engine No.1 motorcycle. One of a small number of GSX-R1100-eds build by hand in the factory to set up the subsquent 1986 assembly line production run. This motorcycle was build with a handmade, prototype frame, on a prototype frame jig and it contains many one-off features and components.

Details on request in person would be best; to list just a few major ones:

This GU74 series bike has the early prototype exhaust without the toe-heatshield, it also has the early version clutch cover without any oil-amount stamped in the specific location where all other bikes have the cc amount stamped in

It has the correct, prototype-only all metal footpegs for rider and passenger since the rubber/metal type was not yet ready for use. It has all the original bodywork pieces mounted, in the original factory paintjob.

Some of the panels have some lines and colors that do not really match and line up correctly and do not match any other painted-alike original bike of the same type.

A correct and proper title exists for this motorcycle as does its original November 1985 first print Din-A5 owners manual.

Also present is the correct, original and super rare 4-language, first edition spareparts manual, printed in Dezember of 1985 in which this specific motorcycle’s exact Vin Number is listed as the starting Vin for the entire series of GSXR 1100 bikes for the next 3 year production run.

Four original sales brochures including the first edition english market version with print date of December 1985 are included in the memorabilia folder. The original keys, 4 correct A27 dark tinted turnsignals, the original toolkit with the rare Suzuki air gauge in its pouch, used for fork pressure and tires and the original GSX-R prototype factory display stand for motorcycle shows complete this offering.

We have owned this motorcycle for many years and have done a lot of research into the history of these early prototype GSX-R 1100-eds (the GSX-R750 also had some early prototypes build in the factory in Japan, none of which we have ever seen come up for sale in the past 15 years)

We have never seen any prototype GSXR-1100 for sale, they were not supposed to be sold to the public, being used mostly for press events, cycle shows and as photo models for the many different manuals and brochures. They were also being returned to the factory after they had been used for all these events and most of them were destroyed

Rumors of an early prototype 1100 existing in the UK in a private collection have so far not been confirmed. In any case, the bike offered here for sale is one of a kind, completely original, never repainted, never restored, exceptionally well kept up mechanically as well as cosmetically and should deserve a place in a serious motorcycle collection or possibly a private museum of some sort. It was ridden extensively in its 33 years, but always cared for and babied to keep it in this exceptional condition

The seller mentions the “silly asking price” and $250,000 [yes, you read that correctly] is certainly silly for anything short of TE Lawrence’s Brough Superior or a MotoGP bike in rideable condition with a truckload of spares. But they’re just putting that out there, and are open to offers. Which is a good thing because, as cool as this is, I doubt it’s worth anything near $250,000. Obviously, a rare bike is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it, but I get the feeling that only a very particular sort of collector will want to pony up, since although it’s rarer, it’s also a little bit cruder, from the seller’s description. The question is: what is it worth? Well, nice original “slabbie” GSX-Rs sell for around $7,000 or so, with only the GSX-R750 LEs really getting much higher. This one could obviously worth much more, being a prototype machine and the very first registered example of a bike that pretty much defined the modern superbike. I’ll be curious to see where it ends up.

We seem to have been awash with slab-sided early Gixxers of late, as the magnificent, watershed beasts enjoy a renaissance of interest and value. Prices for the limited edition bikes are nudging the stratosphere, especially for aging Japanese iron, and they’re pulling the “normal” GSX-Rs along with them.

This first-year 1986 Suzuki GSX-R 1100 is a great example of a gently-aged classic sportbike, and is a true time machine, having been kept immaculate rather than being restored, and wearing only aftermarket parts that were added in the bike’s heyday.

The early bikes were very light for the day, and handled on rails when compared to the bulk of big bikes available at the time. Their 18-inch wheels show their age, however, and the square-tube aluminum frame doesn’t stack up to modern bikes as well as some others.

With the exception of just a few tiny cracks, the bike here is immaculate, especially since it hasn’t been mildly restored.

Rare Rattler: 1986 Suzuki GSXR-750 Limited Edition

Most of the time, limited edition means “this one has a stripe,” or more likely, “this one says ‘limited edition’ on it.” That was not the case with the 1986 Suzuki GSXR-750 Limited Edition.

The LE model was the bike built to homologate the GSXR-750 for superbike classes around the world, and came with a series of trick pieces that made it an edge more precise than the regular Gixxer, and leagues ahead of the competition.

At the top of the list of tricks was a dry clutch, which was a $2,000 piece when new. There was a close-ratio cog box to match the clutch, the brakes were bigger, the forks were the 41 mm electric anti-dive units from the GSXR-1100, and the hand-laid fiberglass tail section carried a solo seat in blue upholstery.

Then, of course, there were special graphics and blue wheels.

The engine was left alone, Suzuki reasoning that weight savings would hurt the wallet enough, and that racers would work their own voodoo regardless of factory trickery. The resulting bike was six pounds lighter than the layman’s GSXR, and on the order of 60 pounds svelter than the competition’s porkers.

It was also the most expensive Japanese sport bike available at the time, coming in at $6,500 — $14,500 in today’s money — more than $2,000 over the regular model.

This GSXR-750 Limited, from a Miami seller with a collection of rare and tasty beasts, has been a street bike its whole life, and has been pampered by all appearances. That makes it a rare thing, indeed, among a production run of limiteds that were either tracked and crashed or stolen to be pilfered for their clutches and transmissions.

Aside from some obvious pitting on the forks, a scuffed fairing and a mark on the tank, this bike is showroom.

Big Boy Toy – 1989 Suzuki GSX-R1100

Though the reasons for hiding away a top-of-the-line sportbike may be a head-scratcher, it’s a thrill to come upon the bike you lusted over back in the day – stock and barely used.  This 1127cc K-variant has just 4,400 miles, stealth paint scheme, and spent all its nights in a Queens garage.

With a newly developed air-oil cooled engine shoehorned into the slightly modified frame from last year’s 750 model, the GSX-R1100 was poised to be the big Kahuna in 1989.  The 138 hp package had a two-stage oil pump to ensure reliability, called the Suzuki Advanced Cooling System.  The high-hipped aluminum frame was beefed up and had 43mm Kayaba cartridge forks in front, with Full Floater monoshock rear, both fully adjustable.  Brakes were Suzuki’s own 310mm fronts with 4-piston calipers, and 240mm rear.

Appearing to be a one or maybe two-owner machine, this Gixxer has been preserved in its 1995 road condition.  From the eBay auction:

Up for your consideration is a 1989 GSXR1100.  I feel the condition of this bike is way above average for the year and miles (4400 miles). The originality speaks volumes as to who owned it and how it was treated.  The bike was bought by me as a collector bike and never put on the street. It has been keep in my climate controlled garage for the past several years. Since most of these bikes have been crashed and repainted you would be hard pressed to fine another in the condition of mine . The only modification is the vance & hines exhaust which was installed at the dealer when new .  This bike still wears its original michelin tires which i have included a picture of the date code. Though pre-season reviews were excellent, production GSX-R1100 K’s acquired a suspect reputation for handling, and with the bulletproof powerplant, many were lengthened into dragsters – street and strip.  Luckily this one hasn’t been under the knife, and the suspension could be dialed in for the new owner.  A carburetor rejuvenation is probably in the cards after all this time, and certainly new rubber.  Though it would be great to see this monochrome endurance fairing steam past, this GSXR might have a future on display…

A mix of big-bike power and light weight, Suzuki’s GSX-R set the tone for the modern superbike. At the time it was introduced, more and more bikes were being cooled by a strange new substance known as “water,” but the GSX-R remained uncluttered by hoses and unburdened by awkward heat-radiating devices: in an effort to slash unnecessary weight wherever possible, Suzuki kept the bike air/oil-cooled. When it debuted in 1986, one year after its littler brother, the 1052cc “1100” weighed a modest 434lbs and produced a stout 137hp. While obviously that’s a bit of a yawn for riders used to reading about 200bhp road missiles, those 137 ponies offer up midrange-rich pull that can still entertain, especially once you throw a set of curves at it…

Stopping wasn’t a problem: braking was handled by Suzuki’s “Deca-Piston” setup with a pair of four-piston calipers up front and a twin piston in the rear. And the bike’s suspension was certainly state-of-the-art, at least on paper, and featured Suzuki’s “Full-Floater” rear suspension that used a set of linkages both top and bottom for a much more progressive action than what you’d typically find on a stiffly-sprung sportbike. But while the bike was definitely more nimble than the big-bore superbikes it replaced, the 1100 was really much better in a straight line than in the corners.

These days, the big slab-sided Gixxer is probably less a canyon-carver and more a very fast nostalgia machine. Suzuki fiddled with the suspension from year-to-year but the GSX-R1100 was never really known for its handling, at least in the positive sense, and those 18” wheels just make things more of a challenge, since good rubber is hard to find in that size…

Today’s example is surprisingly clean, and those braided brake and clutch lines look new. GSX-Rs of all stripes sold well, so they certainly wouldn’t have been very rare at the time. But thirty years of use and abuse have seen most of these blown up, ridden into hedges, or left sadly to rot.

The bike is 100% stock. It has new spark plugs, fresh Motul RBF600 brake fluid, fresh golden Spectro 10W40 oil. It has new brake pads and tires. It has a new drive chain and a new clutch, along with a new Shorai battery. It has fresh powder-coated calipers and Galfer stainless steel brake lines. It has a new stock air filter. It has a Suzuki brand new wiring harness. The front fork brace is a custom made piece made from 7075 aircraft aluminum, the fork seals are new and there is fresh fork oil.

The bike is all Suzuki parts with the exception of the ignition switch and the brake lines. The windscreen is also aftermarket. The stock exhaust is ceramic coated inside and out. It comes with a Suzuki-branded sportbike cover and, if the buyer wants, an extra complete stock motor and a set of virgin, untouched carburetors for an added fee.

Mileage isn’t all that low at 18,000 but, considering the obvious care that’s gone into the bike, shouldn’t be too much cause for concern. Examples like this are few and far between, and starting to attract serious attention from collectors, but it looks like the seller is aiming a bit too high, with no takers yet at a $7,750.00 starting bid. And there’s that sinister dark side not often mentioned when discussing the GSX-R: although its combination of accessible, reliable, affordable performance may have helped to usher in the modern sports motorcycle, the “Gixxer” may also have helped to spawn the very first primitive examples of the notorious Squidus Americanus that frustratingly clog both highway and YouTube…

A lot of people will say that modern sportbikes began with the launch of the Suzuki’s GSX-R lineup and I really can’t argue with that sentiment.  Prior to the GSX-R most “sportbikes” were actually large displacement bikes that had some sporting bodywork/pieces. It wasn’t until the launch of the GSX-R lineup that regular riders were able to get their hands on true sportbikes.

Suzuki introduced the 750cc model in 1984 and the 1100cc edition followed in 1986. While the bikes were developed in tandem/were visually similar, virtually no parts were interchangeable.  The engines, frame, swing arms, and steering geometry were all different and the resulting experience was different for each model; the 750 was sharp but peaky, the 1100 was more to handle but had more power.  I suppose it’s not surprising that the two models developed different core constituencies, with the 750cc bike was the object of lust for those who wanted to go to the track while the 1100 was more “all around”oriented (although some people did take the 1100cc onto the track).

NOTE: The very flat side panels and tall narrow frames gave rise to a nickname for the bikes as the “slab side” GSX-R models while the 2nd generation GSX-R’s are often referred to as the “slingshot” models due to a different engine and carb configuration.  For anyone who is curious, a really good comparison of the slabside and slingshot models was just done in the Feb 2016 edition of Practical Sportbikes.

Regardless of the model, lots of the GSX-R’s got what we sometimes call the “80’s treatment” of anodized bits, aftermarket exhausts, flush mounted turn signals/indicators, chopped down tail assemblies, smoked windscreens, etc, etc. This makes finding one with the major OEM parts still in place and in good condition a challenge that will only continue to increase in difficulty over time.

1987 Suzuki GSX-R 1100 on ebay

This particular GSX-R1100 looks to be in mostly OEM shape save an aftermarket exhaust system.  There does seem to be an odd white patch at the base of the rear plastic on the both sides, possibly decal residue from the SACS decals? The seller indicates there are some paint chips/small gas tank dings and the exhaust is aftermarket but overall the bike looks to be in really good shape/mostly OEM.  Mileage is only 9,962 (yes you read that right) and there are lots of fresh items including tires, battery and oil.

Now we ask the question, is this low mileage, recently freshened but not 100% OEM 1987 Suzuki GSX-R worth the $7,200 Buy-It-Now ebay price?  That price seems a bit high; the average price we seem to be seeing for one of these seems to be about $5,800 USD.  But factor in transport cost and the fresh items listed as being included and I think a bid of around $6400 might make this one move to a new owner.  And values of these do seem to be creeping up…I’m just saying..
