Like A Fine Aged Wine: 2005 Ducati 999R

Top tier Ducati R models have always been in high demand.  The connection to the factory race bikes means collectors and riders alike lust after them.  It is unlikely that these rare beasts ever fall into the hands of owners that would treat them as basic used motorcycles, meaning they are often well cared for and loved.  Often all of this doting translates into stratospheric pricing.  Many are left on the sidelines only to watch desirable machines endlessly bringing eye watering results at sales and auctions.  Well there is a glimmer of hope in the 999R.  In the last couple of years there has been a large shift in pricing for the once cast aside 999 generation and it might time to grab a 999R at the bottom of the depreciation curve.

Full carbon fiber fairings, shower fuel injection, forged light weight wheels, radial Brembo calipers, magnesium castings for the headlights and engine covers as well as fully adjustable Ohlins suspension round out the amazing list of performance parts that go into creating the 999R

The piece to take note of is the relative movement of the R versions.  The example today has a Buy It Now price of $15,000 and when the S models are routinely cresting the five figure mark it seems that the premium to step up to the R is money well spent.

When the Ducati 999 was released in 2003 the world wasn’t ready for the huge design change from the superbike’s predecessors.

However, now the 999 is being viewed as the leap in V twin Ducati superbike design that it really was.

The all new Ducati 999 featured a different new line from the 916 which was largely created by a double sided swingarm and boxy, bulkier bodywork.

Powered by the revered 90° V Twin Testastretta Desmodromic engine, by 2005 all 3 models received upgrades with the 999R in particular benefiting from an additional 11 horses and 6lb more torque. – That’s 145 HP and 88 lb/ft in BASE TRIM. This bike is easily upward of that to the wheel.

The homologation Ducati 999R was released in 2004 and was Ducati’s premium offering of the model. It was equipped with carbon fiber parts and the engine was remapped to offer the most power possible. At the time it was the closest race-like machine you could get without forking out for a custom built bike.

Technically the machine was exceptional and the detail incorporated is really what makes the Ducati 999 stand out. Built and designed for both excellent technical performance and riding position comfort.

Turn signals into mirrors which were also quick release
Adjustable ergonomics
Adjustable levers and controls
Turbulence reducing forward air vents
The rider ergonomics of the Ducati 999 were later incorporated into the GP bikes as they proved superior over previous designs. The steering angle was also increased which made low speed manoeuvres easier.

On top of all this Terblanche knew the importance of improving the new motorcycle over and above the Ducati 916 so he sought to improve the ease of maintenance, increase maintenance intervals, and improve power and torque curves.

Terblanche and his team used CAD and extensive computer technology to test the bikes design, leading to a simplified machine layout and simplified electrical system. The Ducati 999 was a bike built for function over form, styling came second. Ducati knew the performance of the bike was second to none and therefore felt the risk on the aesthetics was worth it.

The Ducati 999 only remained in production until 2006.

However, the bike made its mark on both the track and the street.

The Ducati 999 won three Superbike titles with riders Neil Hodgson, James Toseland and Troy Bayliss riding to victory in 2003, 2004 and 2006 respectively.

The new Ducati split enthusiasts with its styling but there was no denying its improved riding performance over the 916. While it was a slow burn for the Ducati 999, its wins on the track led the way for the masses to appreciate the superbike.

When it comes to buying a Ducati 999 buyers need to be aware that there is a significant difference in price between the various models with the standard 999 sitting at around $7,000 in the US and the 999R going for upwards of $17000 on average, and climbing! Hagerty valuations confirm this.

This seller’s listing does have a few inaccuracies from a historic prospective, and they even might be accused of embellishing some of the folklore surrounding the bike, but that does not take away from what appears to be a very clean example of a great bike.  The 2005 came with an upgraded swing arm when compared to the first year bikes.  They also have the striking red frame and revised front nose bodywork.  Would be nice to know if the bike has a service history, or some details on when the belts were last changed, but truth be told these are not major issues.  Service costs are not as inflated as some on the internet would have you think.  These bikes are undervalued in the market and really offer a great opportunity for someone to jump into the world of R Ducati at an affordable price point.

Sold By Original Owner: 2008 Ducati 1098R

If there is one line of motorcycles that needs no introduction, it is the R models from Ducati.  All of our loyal RSBFS readers will know all about how there are the homologation versions of the era and represent the best that was available.  Their massive performance envelops also came with high prices and production numbers that often did not keep up with demand.  The 1098R is rather interesting because it uses an 1198cc engine and produces over 180 horsepower.  This was a massive jump over the 999R in terms of power.  The styling was also a return to form for Ducati and harked back to the beautiful 916.

Collectable motorcycles often focus on the first or last of something.  In this case the 1098 was towards the end of the line for the steel trellis framed Ducatis.  There was a 1198R, but those are extremely rare in the US, and truth be told are not all that different in terms of engine spec to the 1098R.

Listed with a Buy It Now price of just under $21,000 the bike should sell quickly.  Relatively low miles and some tasteful, and expensive upgrades makes for an attractive package.  Buying from the original owner is a amazing perk.  The listing claims to have all the service records and original parts.  Only thing to note on any 1098 is that these are from the era when Ducati had issues with the fuel tanks swelling.  Most have been resolved by the point, but it is worth noting and confirming the issue was addressed by the seller at some point.

Number 1 in our Hearts: 1993 Ducati 888 SPO

This auction ended early, before we could post – but we are sharing the the content for our avid readers. Just goes to show that the best rare bikes can go quickly! – MI

It’s red. It has low miles and in great looking condition. It has the “I’m #1” plate boldly emblazoned on the tail. And it’s a 888cc, four valve, fuel injected, liquid cooled Ducati from the era when they owned WSBK Superbike racing. Did I mention that it is rare and one of the more collectable Ducatis? Yeah, it’s all that.

The mighty Ducati 888 was a serious homologation machine – on many fronts. Born of the ground breaking 851, the motive power behind the 888 was an evolution of the previous desmoquattro. In fact, the entire 888 was a subtle evolution of the world-beating 851, ensuring maximum performance on the racetrack. As such the 888 was offered as a street bike for homologation purposes – but in several different forms. The SPO that we see here today was offered specifically for the North American market, as Ducati eyed a dominance of the US in addition to owning the high-speed circuits of Europe.

1993 DUCATI 888 SPO, Rare limited Import, only Approx. 150 were imported into the USA, according to personnel at Ducati USA, all 1993 888 imported were SPO’s. Bike is all stock , no modifications. Bike was stored for 10 years between 2010 & 2020, with original owner putting 2786 miles on it. In Nov 2020, bike received a $2k full service at Desmo sports in SF California, including New Cam belts, oil & filters, new front and rear Rossi 2 tires, Battery, plugs, replaced coolant, new rear shock damper, front brake switch, rebuilt clutch slave cylinder, and all Misc gaskets and seals needed. Bike has since been on Display unused in San Jose California , where it is located. The bike is showing slightly over 2800 miles and is in great condition for a 27 year old bike, but has usual small marks and scratches from display and its age. It has a clear California title, and comes with original tool kit and owners Manual.

The opportunity to own a bone stock 888 SPO with fewer than 3,000 miles does not come often. This bike has seen a full maintenance refit only 2 years ago, and has been sitting idle since by way of a display model. It is based in sunny California, not that the abundance of riding days has added anything to the mileage tally. Nearly 30 years on the big triple 8 continues to impress with its classic silhouette, booming exhaust note, exceptional brakes and vaunted chassis stability. It is no secret that the early Tamburini designs have hit their collector stride in the form of the 916, and the smaller 748 is following suit. Spotless in presentation, very low miles and lavished with the kind of attention these Italian exotics crave, today’s Featured Listing is a fantastic example of a rare breed.

Produced alongside the 916, the 748 shares many of the same components, measurements and benefits. The bore and stroke were reduced to reach the 748cc capacity, and the shorter stroke of the 748 enables a quicker rev up the RPM range and a higher overall RPM when compared to the 916. Another similarity: the 748 was built to win races, and enjoyed its own homologation status. There were many variations of the 748 produced, including the two seat biposto as well as a single seat version. There were also SP, SPS and R variants across the years, but all were based on the same solid foundation of the trellis frame, single arm rear suspension, and nearly 100 HP desmoquattro L-twin. The last year for the 748 party was 2002, with the Terblanche-designed 749 taking the stage – however the preferred design of the 748 allowed it to share showroom space in 2003 until all the old stock was sold.

Here at RSBFS, you know we love everything twin. Twin headlights, twin discs, twin exhausts, twin sist… You get the point. This ZX-7J today features a couple of those things but the timeless twin headlight design is certainly a huge selling point for many 90s sport bikes. Just screams classic. Kawasaki iterated on their 750 a couple of times over the years but the sweet spot for many collectors and riders of the generation is the 1991-92 ZX-7J. The 1989-1990 models had many criticism mainly regarding their weight, suspension, and looks which were all somewhat addressed for the 1991 ZX-7J. Most of the criticisms only became an issue when you put the Zx-7 next to some of its more costly competitors. If you isolate it and hop in the seat… an absolute peach of thing.

If you’ve ever seen any 1989-2003 ZX-7 in person, you know how much visual weight these bikes have. That combined with the excess of green can be too much for some but at this point the more green on your classic Kawi the better. 90s 90s 90s. The physical weight was also a common complaint and while the 1991 model lost 2o lbs over the 1989 model, the 1991 K1 model (homologation special) dropped another 10 lbs. With a full 4.8 gallon tank and a wide ergonomics, you’ll feel the weight but you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone complaining.

The cockpit POV reveals one of the ZX-7s biggest quirks which are the air hoses that are reminiscent of the air hoses that fighter pilots use. While these can be easily be mistaken for intake tubes, they just provide cool air to the cylinder head.

While the 1991 ZX-7J made improvements over the 1990 model, one of the backwards steps Kawasaki had to take had to do with the motor. Euro regulations that limited bikes to 100hp were looming and that forced Kawi’s hand to drop 5-7 hp off the top end. The unrestricted K model engines of the same year pumped out 121 hp. While the restrictions never came to fruition, 100 hp was and still is more than enough power to hustle the ZX-7 around.

Not much you can do in the aftermarket due to the relatively short production runs and limited part crossover between models. However, an aftermarket slip-on from Viper is out there if you wish to hear a better soundtrack.

“…The bike was acquired by the selling dealer in November 2020, reportedly from its original owner, and subsequent service is said to have included cleaning the carburetors and fuel tank, changing the fluids, and replacing the battery and tires. This ZX750J is now offered with an owner’s manual, original warranty documents, a sales brochure, a period publication, a spare license plate bracket, and a clean California title.”

For collectors and enthusiasts, one of the biggest problems with 90s sportbikes is that they were really cheap at one point. If you search for Zx-7s on Facebook Marketplace, you’ll be met with examples that have been stretched, neglected, or dressed in Ebay fairings so any ZX-7 is not that easy to find anymore. While you shouldn’t expect these to command the premiums that a showroom Honda or Suzuki would bring, you should expect to have a conversation (maybe not a great one) with your wife if you choose to enter the bidding. One of the biggest downfalls of the ZX-7J is parts availability. The short production runs and age leave a lot to be desired in terms of aftermarket support so if you want to leave some rubber on the road, this may not be for you.

Best comp is the 1991 ZX-7J that sold on BAT in March 2022 for $16K. Might have to bump the budget past $16K to include something for the lady though.

Get ’em While The Gettin’s Good: 2005 Ducati 749

Not that long ago the 999/749 era was not looked on fondly.  People repeated an endless stream of disparaging comments, all revolving around aesthetics.  They literally were looking past a machine that was better in every functional way to the previous generations.  They failed to acknowledge the amazing racing success and usable road manors.  Today we have seen collectors turn their eyes to the 999/749, partly because of massive price increases to the 996/748 bikes but also because the newest collectors are at an age to have a stronger connection to the 999/749.  It was the bike they grew up lusting after.

As with most Ducati lines ups there is a “standard” bike, an upgraded S model and the range topping homologation specials with and R branding.  Obviously the higher specification bikes come with a premium both in appeal and pricing.   For many years enthusiasts quietly purchased and  enjoyed the 750cc versions of Ducati sport bikes.  The idea was that you got all the looks and curb appeal for a fraction of the cost.  Some were even opened an honest about riding style and skill so they admitted that for most the open class bikes were overkill.

This standard 749 might not be a top tier version but that does not mean it should be dismissed.  The bike is listed as being well serviced and in nice shape.  Images show a desirable Tergi exhaust and a complete suite of books and keys.  As more and more people start looking to add a bike from this generation it will be come harder and harder to find a clean and well sorted example.  The $8,999 Buy It Now price might initially shock some, but that does appear to be reasonable pricing right now.  Worst one could say is it might be slightly “future pricing”.  These are well beyond the timeframe to be depreciating.

Honda Heavyweight: 1982 CB1100R

The Honda CB line of bikes has spanned decades and a wide range of offerings.  The CB label has been used on everything from small commuter bikes to all out powerhouses.  The original SOHC CB750 is often sited as one of the first true superbikes.  They latter evolved into the DOHC air cooled bikes of the mid 80s.  These bikes were successful on the race track and most notably with Freddie Spencer.  Towards the end of the line Honda decided it was time to make a true homologation special with the 1062cc engine.  Making 115hp Honda added a full fairing and tweaked just about everything when compared to a CB1100F.

Endurance racing is where the CB1100R saw the most race wins.  Details are limited on just how many road bikes were build, but it is safe to say these were not built in large numbers.  Rough counts indicate around 2500 units built across four production years.   Never officially sold in the USA, some have been imported over the years, but this remains a sought after model for most collectors.

The Buy It Now price of $30,000 can only be described as aggressive based on other transaction data.  The seller unfortunately spends more time in the add laying out rules and making market claims than providing solid details on the bike.  These are relatively simple bikes from a mechanical point of view.  Honda is known for being very supportive with vintage parts availability to keep a machine like this serviced.

The Big Kat: 1982 Suzuki Katana 1000

If you are an enthusiast of a certain age, big bore nostalgia simply must look something like this 1982 Suzuki Katana. Designed by Target Design of Germany (with key member Hans Muth involved), the Katana was a stunning departure from motorcycle design of the time. This was a bike that looked mean and ready to hurt you just parked on the showroom floor. If it were a dog, it would growl at you as you approach. Dominated by motor and angular bodywork, the Katana also had subtle elements such as the nifty all-in-one gauge cluster, the offset gas cap, and the two-tone seat.

Strip away the iconic bodywork and the GSX transforms into what is essentially a more pedestrian GS. The air-cooled mill, the 4-valve heads, the 5-speed transmission… it was already there in the parts bin just waiting to be used. But Suzuki put it to good use in the creation of the Katana, a bike that differed surprisingly little from the stunning concept bike unveiled just a year earlier. From the original model spawned many variants and sub-variants, both in terms of capacity (i.e. extending the Katana name throughout the lineup), as well as different versions of the big bike.

There is some confusion concerning this particular example. The eBay advert clearly states this is a 1000, but the supplied video calls it out as an 1100. Both are possible, but the 1100 is more likely due to the rarity of the 1000cc homologation models (Suzuki was targeting AMA racing at the time). A VIN check could help here, but none was supplied. Additionally, the seller states the original black chrome exhaust is in excellent condition – but I see bright chrome in the pictures. That could be lighting or perspective as well, so possibly not an issue. There are some non-stock mods that I see including flush-mount turn signals front and rear and what appear to be non-OEM brake lines and fittings. That is really only critical if this is to be considered an investment machine, as stockers continue to command the highest market prices.

This auction is going on now in a classified, Buy It Now format. The seller is asking $19,500 for the bike which in today’s market might actually be going rate for a top line GSX1000S / GSX1100S, if not a little optimistic. We don’t see these time machines come through much anymore, and the stock on hand is certainly dwindling. That makes this a pretty rare find (even during the springtime high season), and interested parties might want to check out all of the details here. Good Luck!!
