The Lost Limited: 1994 Suzuki GSX-R 750 SP (U.K.)

spsp right

The forgotten one of the limited edition GSX-R’s.  The design had gotten old and heavy, they were never imported into the Untied States and only a few hundred were produced;  it all adds up to one rare and highly collectible bike.  What it lacks is the wow factor of the 89 RR and 86 LTD.  Instead it has a list of small targeted upgrades to help reduce weight and help scoot it around the track.  I’ve highlighted a few below but the seller has included the full list on the auction.

1994 Suzuki GSX-R 750 SP for sale on eBay

sp carbs 2

The larger 40mm flatside carbs.

sp carbs

You can just see the magnesium head cover.  Those would be fun to try and order from your local Suzuki parts man.

sp frame

The seller describes a feature I had not heard of, tuneable head pipes via an adjustable bolt to help fine tune carbs.  Kind of interesting the engineers would waste even a single yen on this since the exhaust system is the first thing tossed for racing.

sp brake

Six pot brakes lifted from the 1100.  Wheels are lighter as well.

sp front

The seller claims only six were imported into the U.K. by Crescent Suzuki.  I thought I’d never see one for sale but in the last couple of years we’ve seen 3 or so listed (all in Europe).  Bid accordingly if you are trying to finish off a collection.

The auction is right here.

Boy, you guys must be a real pain in the ass. This poor seller is advertising another bike to sell and people spot a fender of interest in the background. So after emails, knocks on the door and a few of you hiding in the garage, here it is. I might have embellished that story a little bit but you get the idea.

The purists will spot that it isn’t original. It has had a restoration and I’ll let the seller tell the story:

I guess the seller didn’t learn his lesson about including bikes in the background of his photos.

It has been a nice summer for buyers interested in GSX-R750 LTD’s.  You have had your pick of museum piece examples to nicely modernized bikes.  The good news is that there is no reserve so get serious with those bids.

Florida Find: 1986 Suzuki GSX-R 750 Limited Edition

GSXRLE_1

LE model GSX-R 750s have been popping up this year. I think it is great to see so many of these rare models preserved, enjoyed and ridden. Today’s GSX-R LE looks fantastic, and has obviously been well loved. With fewer than 13,000 miles on the odometer, there is a lot of life left in her as well. What is the big deal about the LE model versus the “standard” GSX-R of the day? I’ll let the seller explain, starting with the money shot:

GSXRLE_8

From the seller:
The 1980’s was a very special time in motorcycle racing history, and Suzuki knew it. Homologation rules required a certain number of bikes be produced in order to qualify for racing. 1985 was the first year of the GSXR 750. Almost 100 LBS lighter than its competition at the time, it set the standard for racing. But Suzuki wasn’t done. They produced 500 “limited edition’ models in 1986, which offered even more trick items to include a dry clutch, factory fiberglass solo seat, bigger forks and brakes, adjustable shock, a swingarm prepped for spools, aluminum chain guard, and a few other goodies. Over the years the gsxr has has become THE iconic superbike of racing, and it all started here.

GSXRLE_5

From the seller:
For sale is a very rare 1986 GSXR 750R limtied edition. This is a Canadian model which I purchased about 5 years ago. It has a clear title in my name. Although the bike is almost 30 years old it still looks and runs great. I drive it regularly, time permitting. Unlike some collectors, I actually enjoy riding my bikes, as opposed to using them as garage art. Full Spectrum racing in Orlando Florida helped with refreshing the top end and tuning the motor. Randy Voth is amazing with these old GSXR’s and the only one I have ever let work on the bike. Each cylinder now has 180+ lbs of compression. The bike is currently running a set of new 1100 carbs and dyno’d at 107hp at the rear wheel, on a very conservative dyno. The yosh pipe sounds amazing. In addtion, the bike has a NOS gsxr gas tank which I purchased (no longer available from Suzuki), new coils, Wilber adjustable rear shock, 1995 GSXR 5.5 by 17 rear wheel powdercoated blue, fabrication work by Wyn Belorusky to include swingarm bracing, custom rearsets, rear brake hanger, 2004 GSXR750 complete front end with forks, clipons, brake calipers, master cylinder, rotors, braided lines, and 3.5 by 17 front wheel powdercoated blue. The bike has a carbon fiber front fender to complete the conversion. New clear Zero Gravity windscreen, billet aluminum left and right engine side covers and sprocket cover, period correct yoshimura pipe ceramic coated, new chain and sprockets, Yosh carb heat shield, and ohlins steering dampner. The bodywork is in very good condition for the age. All bodywork is original Suzuki. The lower is a NOS item I purchased (big $). The bike has been to deals gap and made the homepage cover of killboy. It always draws a croud.

GSXRLE_2

From the seller:
Overall its a very nice bike which I have built to ride and enjoy. I have and will include in the auction the aluminum chain guard, rearsets with OEM heel guards, OEM front end, OEM side covers, and factory original limted 18″ wheels which came with the bike when I bought it. I’ll also throw in a pit bull rear stand! The bike has a brand new battery, and fresh Castrol synthetic oil/filter less than one month ago.

GSXRLE_4

Bidding has started on this LE model GSX-R 750, and the price is currently up to $6,400 with reserve still in place. There is no BIN on this auction, so you take your chances and let the pieces lay where they fall. If earlier LE models are any indication, the price has quite a ways to climb before that reserve lifts. Check out the auction here, and then let us know your thoughts on this not-quite-stock but still very, very good looking Limited Edition. Good Luck!

Red, White And Rattle: 1986 Suzuki GSX-R 750 Limited

ltd left ltd tank

Life is pretty good if you have been in the market for a GSX-R 750 Limited.  There has been a steady stream of nice examples for sale over the past few months.  Now, you may not be so happy with the selling prices if you are buyer but you can’t complain about supply.

ltd closeUnfortunately there is no real info about the bike from the seller.  It looks like it is listed by a dealer who wants to tell you how rare it is instead of its’ history and condition.  Mileage is listed at a moderate 12,200.

ltd filterWhile the bike  appears mostly stock,  the air box has met the garbage can and a period Yoshimura muffler replaces the original.

ltd clutchI think I include this photo on every Limited I post.  I never get tired of it either.

ltd left 2Nice and mostly stock examples like this have been selling in the $10,500-$12,500 range lately.

And The Market Says? 1986 Suzuki GSX-R750R Limited

1986 Suzuki GSX-R 750 Limited For Sale

The last one sold for, wait for it:  $22,400!   That particular Limited was basically a 850 mile, untouched time capsule from 1986.  This one doesn’t meet those ultra high standards but it looks like a very nice example in it’s own right.

Sometimes I wonder if I should post any other picture of a limted than this one.  The carbs/airbox combo is one of the few mods.

The story:

This 1986 GSXR 750 Limited Edition has been in storage for over 20 years. It has had only one owner. The Arizona title shows MSO as previous record. Mileage is box A and original. The body work and all parts are as they came from the factory in 1986. If you know vintage sport bikes, you know that these were very rare and expensive bikes compared to their non Limited Edition counterparts. The only modifications that were done to the bike was the installation of GSXR1100 Carbs and air box. This was common during that period to maximize performance. The stock GSXR 750 Air Box comes with the bike. The original Carbs are not available. Lockhart Phillips Turn Signal Buds were installed at one time. These were removed and the original Turnsignals were installed. The Lockhart Phillips Turnsignals also come with the bike. The front brake lines were replaced with steel braided lines and the original rubber brake hoses also come with the bike. There are extra engine ignition point covers as well. The fork sprngs are Progressive Springs and the original springs also come with the bike. A Lockhart Phillips front Headlight cover is also on the bike. There are some scratches and chips on the paint. Overall,it is in outstanding condition and runs very well. The original owners manual and tool kit are also included. The values on these keep increasing. Bid now and own a piece of history. I reserve the right to end the auction early as this bike is for sale locally as well.

Looks just as clean under the bodywork.  One simple trick I use is looking for the OEM Suzuki zip ties.  If missing, well, things have come off the bike.

$T2eC16RHJIYE9qUcOO2+BRn(9kGSvg~~60_3

Well kids, she isn’t going to be cheap but how high will the market drive the price?  Other than the missing stock carbs, it is all there.  I’d consider the mileage still on the low side for a bike built in 86.  Am I in the ballpark at $12,500?  Whatever the price they are one highly desirable bike.

If it does sell for way above average maybe it is time to start burying Limited’s in my backyard instead of gold.

Some Assembly Required: 1986 Suzuki GSXR750R Limited Project

led right

Looks like the winter project just became a spring project.  Limited’s are rare but how daring are you?

Lets get to the story from the seller:

So the story goes. The bike fell into my lap through a friend of mine. I got it about 6 months ago. I started to dump money over 2000.00 and paid 5000.00 for the motorcycle all in parts as it sat like that in the guys garage for over decade.  I have the original title.
The motorcycle has 38,000 miles on it. About 98% bike is there. Its only missing some mirrors , signals, fairing trim and center upper fairing headlight cover. All the other parts are there. The motorcycle was taking apart for single swing arm coversion. The owner filed the sides frame down then quickly abandoned that idea. The frame was fixed by long time fabricator in the motorcycle business. I have his name and number for verification. The frame has no problems and is very clean looking no scratches. Swing arm is clean looking as well. All parts are original. The fairings have been repainted and will need some more work. The lowers and the seat I bought on ebay. Im throwing in extra front end and Nice full Yoshimura period correct exhaust. All parts are very nice condition. Not all scratched up and rusted. You will to need powder coat the wheels get the seat reupholstered. The lowers need work as they were really rough. You will need a new chain and battery. All hardware and small parts are in a bag. Very complete build. A very strong foundation for restore. You see for the price its negotionable but not much.

ltd 10ltd 9

A single side swing arm conversion?  Isn’t that against the law on a classic like this?

ltd 7

That is what you are after, isn’t it?  In or out of the frame, it looks good.

ltd 3ltd 2

Like the Honda NSR250 last week, if you have the patience and like the thrill of the search, then this could be a great project.  If not;  buy a model instead.  The bike has been on Ebay a few days now with no takers on the BIN price.  I’m guessing buyers are seeing a little too much work there for the asking price of $6,500, which is basically half of what you would pay for a nice example.  The seller did mention though, he is open to a little negotiation.  Shoot him an offer and clear some garage space.

Here is the classified on Ebay.

Suzuki 1986 Limited(s) (Germany + Italy)

Among the elite of RSBFS bikes this 1986 Suzuki GSX-R 750 R LE sits right on top. The exact number of LE models produced remains a mystery (some say 500, some say 1000…). What is sure is that it was produced in 1986 only, it featured a unique color scheme, a glass fiber hand made tail unit (yes like the RC30 of 2 years later), stronger brakes than its brothers, a more efficient chain, electrically actuated anti-dive front fork system,a single seat and those expensive and impossible to find dry clutch plates (apparently exactly the same as used on two stroke 500cc GP bike). Despite the exhaust of this bike is dead quite, the sound of the 4 cylinder oil-air mix cooled motor coupled with that beautiful open clutch cover is unique. I remember visiting once a Japanese website of a true passionate Limited owner that had a black background and the mechanical dry clutch in display that only the connoisseurs would recognise as being a website dedicated to 1) a motorbike model and 2) the Suzuki GSX-R 750 R LE:

Limited_1

Despite the rarity of this bike, it is not uncommon to find almost new models perfectly maintained. These don’t come cheap but well below RC 30 territory. I wonder if the first buyers of these models well aware of the rarity and costly bodywork and clutch spare parts well thought not to risk ruining their precious unique bike and simply stored them in warm and dry living rooms. The sample here is found in Germany. It had 2 owners and seems in good conditions. The price is on the higher side of the market but what prices LEs will reach in the future is all to be worked out…and I reckon won’t go down…

Limited_6

I personally have one of these in my garage and consider it more precious than other commonly sought after models. With its old style “seat in the bike and stretch your arms” riding position as opposed to “seat on top and hold yourself up” of modern bikes (try sitting on the tall and short RSV4) the feeling of riding it is a unique mix of time travel and riding involvement.

Any 1986 Limited is well worth it and that’s valid for Gixxer and non Gixxer enthusiast. If you are interested you can check the link below:

Suzuki GSX-R 750R LE in Germany for 11950 EUR

Now if the “standard” Limited Edition is not fancy enough for you, you can opt for the über rare Yoshimura Limited Edition as the one found in Italy (this has been on the market for a while now…). For this you’ll need to part with 9000 EUR…that’ right this is cheaper:

Yoshi_1

And it gets even more interesting as the same dealer is selling a “standard” white and blue colour LE for 15000 EUR…Confused ? Me too. I tell you what, if I had 9000 EUR to spare, I’ll rent a van and drive straight to Milan…
