Fogarty Connection? 1989 Yamaha FZR750R OW01

1989 Yamaha FZR750R OW01 for sale

Today Dennis from Denmark forwards us this modern sportbike legend, the the Yamaha OW01 homogolation special. Produced in limited numbers it featured a very peaky 5 valve 750cc engine that breathed through huge flat-slide carbs and was mated to a close ratio gearbox. Ohlins rear shock and fully adjustable suspension up front made it one of the best on the track. Power output stock was a claimed 119bhp and it weighed just over 400lbs.

This particular example was recently treated to a restoration and featured in the November issue of Practical Sportbikes. The seller goes on to describe a story associated with this particular bike and that it may have originally been given to Carl Fogarty by Yamaha. While the seller notes he has not been able to credibly verify this information, it’s seems plausible. What I do know is that offered for £11,995 (~$20k USD), this sounds like a great buy even if shipping is required.

from the seller:

1989 Yamaha FZR750R OW01 following a 2 year fastidious detailed restoration which is fully detailed in Practical Sportsbikes’ magazine article and ride test of issue 37, November 2013. One of an original run of only 500 bikes produced worldwide to homologate it for the new World Superbikes series, this example is really stunning.

The bike has had an extensive and detailed restoration over the past two years costing thousands of pounds and taking many hundreds of hours. It’s now complete and has a current MoT for UK riding, long road tax and comes with the elusive genuine toolkit and owners manual.

The work done has replaced every seal, bush, bearing and consumable on the chassis and those requiring replacement in the engine. This includes chain, sprockets, all caliper pistons and seals, wheel bearings, brake lines, Ohlins shock rebuild, hard chroming and fork rebuilds, brake disks, you name it, it’s been done and the bike is immaculate as can be seen in the PS magazine article and the photos here.

In addition, when I bought the bike I was told it has history relating to Carl Fogarty although as I haven’t yet been able to substantiate these claims, treat the information as “interesting” for the time being. Having said that there are some changes on the bike from standard that are very intriguing and may lend more weight to the story of brief ownership by Foggy.

The story has it that before the 1992 TT, Yamaha gave Fogarty a road based OW01 to familiarise himself with. Carl at that stage of his career would sell everything a sponsor gave to him, and so the OW01 was alleged to have been sold on to a member of his 1992 pit crew.

Japanese Spec 1988 Yamaha OW01 Available in Australia

Yamaha OW01 for sale

From the same seller in Australia with the two RC30’s for sale, he’s also offering this very tidy Japanese market OW01. These models are slightly restricted and can be spotted easily by the flush mounted headlights. Nontheless, with 500 produced worldwide it’s still a very collectable motorcycle. It has an opening bid of $13k AUD, which comes to about $12,200 USD. Being a 25 year old bike it should be relatively easy to register here in the states as a classic. How much is shipping from Australia?

from the seller:

In very good condition for its age with low km’s in OEM condition with just 17,000km. I purchased it 3 years ago and have only ridden it once before being placed into storage.

The only thing needed before rego would be a service, battery and a new relay for the indicators (not flashing) which is a standard Yamaha part. Tyres are virtually brand new

It has been part of my collection for many years but it should be ridden – the future owner will be very happy with it.

Why Paint it in Black ?? Yamaha OW01 (in Switzerland)

The colors on this one are all wrong. But below the fairing lies the real thing: a truly rare Yamaha FZR 750R aka the OW01. The price is modest with a BIN set at 8300 $ and having covered just 13.000 km.

Go for the bike, stay for the tulips: 1990 Yamaha FZR 750RR OW01 in Holland

FZR750RR_1

Currently located in The Netherlands, here is a second gen 750RR with approximately 12,763 miles. This is one of the more coveted “homologation” racers we see on RSBFS, although being in Europe might make it a bit more difficult for US-based investors.

FZR750RR_4

Like the vaunted Honda RC-30, the OW01 was built to allow Yamaha to go Superbike racing with something special. These homologation machines are pretty close to being true “racebikes for the street” – remove the lights, turn signals and license plate and hit the track! The factory Superbikes were far more exotic than the homologated bikes, but even so they were based on these limited production machines.

FZR750RR_3

From the seller:
From private collection, very original Yamaha OW01 from the second generation. As new with only 20.540 km (not miles!). All service is done (oil, brake fluids, sparkplugs, filters, etc.) Ready to go! Original delivered to Belgium so with Belgium paperwork, first registered in 1995.

FZR750RR_2

The seller is located in Holland, but the bike will be delivered to Belgium (hint: try the beer there – it’s fantastic). It all comes down to price. This bike is being offered for an opening ask of $14,000 – with absolutely no takers thus far. Is the OW series not that interesting anymore, is the price out of line, or is it simply too far away from most buyers? You tell me. Check out the auction here, then jump to the comments and share your thoughts. Free RSBFS coffee mug for the best comment!

Up For Grabs – Yamaha FZR 750R OW01 Track Bike (Switzerland)

The Yamaha FZR750R is one of the rarest production exotica of the 90s. Probably the most daring serial bike Yamaha ever built, it was assembled in small numbers (about half of Honda RC30 volumes).

OW1_brochure_2

These bikes, also commonly known by their Yamaha racing bikes model code OW1, are either found in new condition in somebody’s collection or were raced.

Clearly the sample available in Switzerland, belongs the category that saw more track tarmac than traffic lights. If you are a collector that’s not what you are looking for. Instead, if you either have already a street or track ready OW01 and want to have a full set of spare parts (otherwise hard to source), or always dreamed to turn up at the weekend track day and impress your mates with a real exotic piece of history, than this might be for you. With a very modest asking price of about 2000 EUR, this 1989 Yamaha former track tool is well worth it. With the old school riding position, low seat, low handlebar, large tank, up in front of your chest, the 24 year old special is undoubtedly very sexy.

708243666_2_Big

Personally I would give it a fresh fiberglass “suit” including a proper paint job, sort it out mechanically, (in case there is a need), and load it up on the trailer for the special occasions of some classic Superbike track event. Check out on this video not related to bike on sale how a FZR750R sounds (listen when it hits 6000RPM):

What would you do with this ? If this ad was available in the UK, I reckon it would sell within minutes. The bike comes with the original paperwork and is a clean one (no grey or black import). It was first registered in 1993. The owner doesn’t say much about it and I wonder if he has some of the original trim parts. That would make this deal an absolute steal. Yamaha FZR750R OW01 For Sale With Less Than 3000 Miles (UK)

Following the brand new RC45 we posted earlier, here’s another piece of homologation exotica across the pond. Available in Edenbridge, United Kingdom, is this sub 3k mile Yamaha OW01 for roughly $25,500. There are a couple others available on eBay UK but they’re not as well preserved as this one. While not quite brand new, this one has barely been ridden really. If you were to purchase, ride or display?

Yamaha FZR750R OW01 For Sale on eBay UK

from the seller:

This machine is part of a collection one of our valued customers has asked us to dispose of.

This Yamaha is in superb origional condition and would consider this to be 8.5 – 9 out of 10.

She is an import model and has not yet been registered in the UK.

This motorcycle has just 4621 Km on the clock (2889 miles) and although we believe the mileage to be correct due to the condition of this machine it cannot be guaranteed.

Collector Alert! 1990 Yamaha FZR-R 750 OW01

For Sale: 1990 Yamaha FZR-R 750

Forget all of those finicky Italian hand-built jobs. Ignore the boutique builders and the semi-rare, leakly, smokey, two-strokers. THIS is the real deal, and one of the reasons RSBFS exists: Homologation. Built in only enough numbers to qualify for Superbike racing regulations, this Yamaha FZR-R “OW01” 750 was the pinnacle of the racing world at the time (save for the pesky success of the Honda RC30).

So are you a RC30 or a OW01 type of person? The Honda arguably had the looks, but this OW01 has the brutal power and handling of a Superbike race winner. Folks with truckloads of cash might like both, but if you could only choose ONE which would it be? It would be hard to argue with somone who choses the OW01 as the pick of the litter.

From the seller:
1990 OWO1 FZR-R 750. VERY RARE motorcycle. Never titled in the US…has a canadian MSO. Bike is in amazing condition and runs perfect. Very well maintained and never abused. Google OWO1 and you will see more about this motorcycle. Very few produced and none imported to the US.

Have many pics and will ship internationally if needed.

Here is a bike that has had a few miles under the belt (woo hoo – sombody actualy rode it!). It is sourced from Canada, and currently lacks any US-based paperwork or title. I’m not sure how that will impact a prospective buyer – it makes no difference if someone is simply going to park it, but with the existing miles I think I buyer will want to make some noise. Lack of a US title is certainly a negative for this otherwise very lustworthy object.

This auction is on right now and has an opening ask of $17,000. No takers thus far, but it is early days for this one. The seller has a BIN set at an even $20k – which is pretty much right in line with what we have seen from these rare machines. To see all the details, click on the link and jump over to the auction. Good Luck!!
