Old School: 1990 Suzuki GSX-R1100 for Sale

If you wanted to hit the track or really tear up the canyons in the 80s and 90s, a 750cc machine was probably a much better choice for a rider than this Suzuki GSX-R1100. At the time, all of the Japanese manufacturers were caught up in a shooting war, homologating their 750cc machines for superbike racing, and that meant that those bikes balanced handling and power, versus outright brute force. Liter bikes of the period were more bruisingly-powerful GTs than out-and-out sportbikes and, although bikes like the Yamaha FZR1000 might have been just as fast and more refined, the allure of that extra 100cc gave the big Gixxer a swaggering air of danger.

The original GSX-R1100 is very much straddles the vintage and modern eras, with a full fairing and dual headlamps that aped endurance racers of the period and manages too look fairly modern, in spite of being matched to a set of 18″ wheels that would be out of fashion by the time the second-generation rolled around in 1989. The engine of the “L model” seen here still used Suzuki’s “oil-boiler” sixteen-valve inline four, but displacement increased from 1052cc to 1127cc. Weight was up to nearly 470lbs dry, but naturally so was power and the bike could almost touch 170mph.

I really like the style of the second-generation GSX-R1100, bridging the gap between classic and more modern superbikes. It’s big, heavy, fast, and handsome. Personally, I’m not so enamored of them that I’d hesitate to restomod or otherwise “improve” one, but that’s just me. Originality counts for collectors, and this one looks very clean and unmolested, even down to the stock exhausts.

The $6,500 starting bid just shows how much these have appreciated in recent years. Miles aren’t museum-piece low, but the bike appears to be in very clean condition and these engines are pretty durable. Certainly, parts to do a complete rebuild should be available, and decades of tuners have been able to squeeze plenty of power out of the oil-cooled lump, if the 140hp and 86lb-ft of torque of the factory bike don’t excite…

Superbad – 1990 Suzuki GSX-R750

Suzuki made some nice updates for the 1990 model year, but puzzlingly held a few from the U.S. version.  This one-owner time machine appears to have been ridden – but carefully, and nicely maintained.

Suzuki introduced the GSX-R750 in 1985 and in the first five years made several minor changes and two comprehensive re-designs.  For 1990 the engine returned to a 4mm longer stroke design, which deepened and stretched the torque band.  Lighter weight pistons and connecting rods that were threaded to accept the rod bolts ( without nuts and washers ) lowered the mass of the rotating assembly and helped the 115 horses survive the  12,500 rpm redline.  The stateside edition kept right-side-up forks on the revised frame, but did get the adjustable Full Floater monoshock and wider rear wheel.

Pushing thirty, this Gixxer looks excellent considering.  Complete and very clean, just one bonk to the tank and some age-related discoloration.  Pictures are numerous if not high-res.  Comments from the eBay auction:

Such a bad ass bike!!  This bike is the real deal, one owner, never down and unmolested. No cracks in fairings, 100% stock and original. Starts instantly, runs and rides perfectly. Owned by retired airline pilot who purchased it new in 1990.

One small dent in right side of tank as seen in pics (can be repaired with paintless dent removal) other VERY minor blemishes as expected for 30 year old machine. This Slingshot is super clean for the age and runs and rides like a new bike.  It is a very nice example of a rare GSX-R750 Slingshot that is worthy of a collection.
Reviewers portrayed a GSX-R that responded to strong ridership with speed, but this example appears to have had a gentleman owner.  Surprisingly free of damage, it’s also been kept ready for the next owner maintenance-wise.  The seller even offers flat-rate shipping to most of the western states.  Despite its bad boy vibe, this GSX-R has racked up some miles but kept its nose clean.  The unusual combination of nice condition, choice year, and low starting bid has led to some early activity – we’ll keep watching for the reserve.

Regular readers might recognize the Disney cells and beige carpet before even clicking through to this listing, but this is one of this collector’s finer examples.  Also one of the most legendary Gixxers, returning to the longer stroke engine and uber rare with just 500 examples worldwide.

With its 40mm semi-flatslide “slingshot” Mikuni carburettors, the 748cc four was a nice upgrade from the H variant with 112 hp on tap.  The alloy frame was compact thanks to the 1988 update, still air and oil cooled with a two stage oil pump.  Fully adjustable 43mm forks and Full Floater monoshock are a gift and a challenge, requiring a studious wrench and some time to get right.  Figure in some break time as well, since the high footpegs, low clip-ons and hard seat challenge the rider.  In neighborhood of 450 lbs. ready to ride, it wasn’t super light, but was trim for the day.

 

Somehow wheeled onto the carpet after just over 1,000 miles, this RR is collector quality with original fairings and paint.  The Yoshimura carbon muffler lets you know you didn’t just pass through a galactic wormhole.  Its age shows only in the tank protector which has accumulated some dirt under one edge, otherwise it’s the time traveler.  From the eBay auction:

GR79C with only 1,675 kilometers (1,041 miles). All fairings are 100% original OEM factory Suzuki. Bike is in mint as new condition. Museum collector quality! Almost flawless. Original mirrors show patina in the glass reflection. Light tiny surface scratches on the right side of the swing arm by the stand bolt. Clear tank protector installed and has a dirty edge. The rest of the bike is mint. Bike has been de-restricted. Comes with a Yoshimura full exhaust system and Ohlins fully adjustable rear shock. Original stock exhaust system and stock shock in new condition go with bike. Those parts were removed and replaced with the upgraded components when the bike was purchased new. (Original parts are worth thousands alone.) Bike shows no signs of rust or corrosion. Original owner said it was cherished and always stored indoors and never ridden in the rain. No signs of wear on the bike. Comes with two original keys and fresh tires. This bike looks like a bike should with only a thousand miles on the odometer. Looks like it was just rolled off the assembly line. Chassis and engine are spotless. Bike runs as good as it looks. Extremely well cared for.

It would be a stretch to consider this museum piece for an afternoon’s pleasure, but it could happen.  Like jumping in a 30 year-old Porsche 964 Turbo, or V-Tailed Beech Bonanza, you’d want to take a short shakedown cruise, stop, look it over, then have a serious discussion with the mirror.

Going the Distance: 1986 Suzuki GSX-R750 Race Replica for Sale

Well this is obviously not some perfectly-preserved replica, so if that’s a problem, just move along. Me, I’m always glad pristine originals exist in museums, so we can tell what those original, factory-supplied decals on the tank looked like before years of spilled gasoline caused them to flake and peel. But I don’t really want to own those bikes. Original carbon canisters that clutter up a Ducati’s clean lines? Massive exhaust cans that make a superbike sound like a sewing machine? Ugly plastic fenders and bulky signals and all that are optional, in my book. A bike is a blank slate. Sure, you can go too far and create something tacky and ill-advised. But this particular Suzuki GSX-R750 walks that line perfectly, with classic, if not original graphics, and great 80s endurance-racer style.

Flat-slide carbs now feed the air and oil-cooled inline four, but it otherwise retains the classic GSX-R oil-boiler powertrain. The inline four had twin cams and four valves per cylinder, but it saved weight by eschewing a radiator and water cooling system. Instead, Suzuki’s first couple generations of Gixxer used the Suzuki Advanced Cooling System or “SACS” that featured a double-chambered oil pump to circulate and cool the bike’s lubricant, along with oil jets that sprayed the undersides of the pistons.

The colors here match the black-and-red Japanese-market Limited Edition version of the bike, decorated with tasteful period sponsor logos. I don’t know if this Yoshimura setup is period-correct, but it looks the part, and makes the bike look more lithe and nimble, more modern. There may be fans of the huge, perforated cylinder that passed for an exhaust can on the original bike, but I’m not one of them. Stainless-steel braided brake lines are obviously a later edition, but look good and should improve feel from the old-school four-piston calipers. The Fox shock out back should get handling closer to modern standards, and I love the single-lamp endurance-style fairing.

BODY:

The body work is all original and is in good condition. There are absolutely no cracks on any of the body panels, but there are some minor nicks and scrapes on a few of the panels.  We took pictures of the body work before all the decals so you can see the decals are not hiding any cracks or paint flaws. The wheels are perfect with no rock chips or scratches anywhere. The frame and engine have no corrosion and are nice and clean. Overall cosmetically this bike is in very nice condition.

MECHANICAL:

The bike runs and rides perfect, and shifts smoothly through all 6 gears. A full service tune-up was performed which included new spark plugs, chain, air filter, brake pads, oil change, new tires, and fluids flushed. All of the lighting, switches and electrical components work as they should.

RACE PARTS:

Professionally fully built motor from crank up, balanced crankshaft, over sized Wiseco pistons, race cams, adjustable camshafts sprockets, extended hardened rocker arms, performance valve springs, titanium valve retainers, and camshafts were degreed top performance race spec. 34mm Mikuni flat slide carbs, velocity stacks and pod filters included. Yoshimura race exhaust, fox fully adjustable rear shock, progressive front springs and emulators, larger 4.0 rear wheel, 520 chain conversion, pro flo clip-ons, larger diameter front brake rotors, braided steel brake lines, 4 piston large calipers. this bike also comes with a full JDM lighting kit for street, which includes JDM turn signals, and front headlight kill switch with city light options too.

CONCLUSION:

This is a great opportunity to buy a 1986 Suzuki GSX-R750 endurance race replica. This race build was inspired by the original endurance race bikes of the time and was built to closely resemble and perform as the original Suzuki team endurance race bike. Even legends have parents. They don’t often get lauded for their offspring’s exploits, but their influence is indelible, and without their genes, what would our heroes be? The 1986 Honda VFR750F is a minor legend in its own right, but its offspring — the Honda RC30 and RC45, are the beasts everyone remembers. But in 1986, Honda was hungry to catapult itself past the other Japanese marques in the sportbike arms race, and to cure its new V4s reputation for weak valve trains.

The VFR750F delivered. Under Fred Merkel, Wayne Rainey and Bubba Shobert, the bikes cleaned up in AMA. And under a crew from Cycle World that included Nick Ienatsch and a motley crew of racers and journalists, blew the ’86 Suzuki GSXR750’s 24-hour speed record out of the water by nearly 20 mph. Follow the link to that story at the end of this writeup. You won’t regret it. The red-white-and-blue beasts achieved the feat thanks to an improved 105-horsepower 750cc V4 that represented a 20-horsepower gain over the Magnas and fixed reliability questions. The bikes were also something like 40 pounds lighter than the previous model.

Coupled with a roadrace-worthy suspension and wide, sticky tires, the VFR had the goods to take it to Yamaha and Suzuki.

This 1986 Honda VFR750F is in impeccable, low-mile shape, with a long list of recent mods and maintenance to make it even tastier. It sports a Yoshimura exhaust and an RC30-style front fender, among other improvements. Seller Joe spent a long time on his description, so we’ll let him take it away:

Honda collector for over 30 years. My recent focus has been V4 bikes of the 80s/90s, including both RC30/RC45. This is my second 1986 VFR750F, which I purchased in 2016. I bought this bike because of its low mileage and overall survivor condition. Plus, I really wanted one with a pipe. The videos don’t do the sound of this Yosh pipe justice. The bike has 11,357 miles. As you can see from the title, I’ve put less than 100 miles on the bike while freshening up a few things. I have over 20 bikes and like to work on them, but I don’t ride them enough, so it’s time for someone else to enjoy it.Upgrades – all done within the last 18 months: New Honda fuel pump (specific to this bike and $200 for part alone); New fuel filter; New choke cable; New Yuasa AGM battery; New Honda grips; New Metzeler rear tire (Metzeler front matches but older – see code); New DID x-ring chain with rivet; re-zinc’d rear sprocket; Cut down front fender to match race bikes/RC30, and painted to match (includes uncut stock front fender); Valve adjustment and carbs disassembled and ultrasonic cleaned and sync’d (see video – work done by Joe Nelson of VFR Dreams); Fresh oil and filter; New brake fluid front and rear; New clutch master fluid; Known blemishes: 20-25 tank “pimples”appeared over this last winter. Odd, because always stored in a heated garage. Scrapes on left rear cowl/tail. A few very small scratches on windscreen. Hairline crack on LH fairing (3/4”). Normal cracking on mirror arm. Clear title in my name. Includes factory shop manual. I do not have factory owners manual. 2 keys, including original stamped key and a Honda duplicate. Multiple videos show carb sync, cold start, fast idle, fast idle warm up with two other of my bikes. Asking $4000.

While later sport-touring RC36 VFRs don’t command the same coin (somehow) as the earlier bikes, VFRs are still a bargain compared to a slab-side Gixxer in similar shape. For such a jewel of a machine in such gorgeous condition, the $4,000 asking price is almost a no-brainer.

It’s not a new thing to scan a sportbike forum and find a subset of self-professed sportbike cognoscenti espousing the virtues of supersport 600s over literbikes for daily street use and getting the most out of yourself on a mountain road. The big bikes, they argue, are almost too much for most racetracks, let alone furniture-lined ribbons of arboreal asphalt. A 600 is a much better tool here. You’ll get more out of yourself and the bike without getting to certain-death velocities within the 50 yards between one hairpin and the next. But what if there were something out there even better suited than a 600? A bike that has enough power to get out of its own way, but makes you really work for breakneck speed?

Enter the 1991 Suzuki GSX-R400RR. The RR means this is the sport production version of Suzuki’s second-tier early ‘90s Gixxer, so its handling and chassis are even sharper than the base model’s, and it has enlarged carburetors, a close-ratio box and short wheelbase to enhance its ability to carve a corner. 

With 60 horsepower to the back wheel from a screaming, 15,000 rpm four banger, you’re not gonna run down even a 15-year-old 600 on a straight stretch, but there’s a good chance you’ll reel them back in when things get curvy. And even if you don’t, you’ll be able to approach the limit without necessarily doubling the speed limit. 

This 1991 Suzuki GSX-R400RR comes from our friends at Moto2 Imports and, as is their way, is in immaculate shape. It has been treated to a new chain, fluids and carburetor cleaning and is fully de-restricted.

Blunt Force Trauma: 1990 Suzuki GSX-R1100 for Sale

For a flagship superbike, the Suzuki GSX-R1100 looked relatively primitive on paper: oil/air cooled engine, twin cradle frame, five-speed gearbox… But the sledgehammer personality of the early GSX-R1100 makes it more collectible today, next to comparatively polished in-era competition from Honda and Yamaha. It may not have been the most sophisticated bike, but it did the job, and the engine is famed for being durable and responsive to tuning, with a wealth of go-fast expertise out there for anyone looking to build a big, bruising retro sportbike. It’s a handsome beast as well, with old-school looks and more tasteful graphics than the later Gixxers, combined with more modern running gear like those 17″ wheels that allow for riders to fit modern, grippy rubber.

The air and oil-cooled inline four was always the star of the show. It has dual overhead cams and sixteen valves, but stuck with what is basically air cooling, which does seem like a strange choice. But in the wild days of the 1980s, motorcycle designers were experimenting with all sorts of technology to maximize power and minimize weight. Japanese sportbikes were suffering from no deficiency in the former department, but weight was still a bit of an issue. So in developing the various GSX-Rs, Suzuki took a page out of Colin Chapman’s book and decided that keeping things simple meant fewer parts to fail, less of them to weigh the bike down, and a whole type of fluid the bike wouldn’t need. Namely: coolant.

To keep the bike operating within the appropriate temperature range, Suzuki employed a high-capacity oil pump, a dedicated oil circuit for the cylinder head, and oil jets for the bottom of the pistons. The system was dubbed “SACS” for Suzuki’s Advanced Cooling System, and it featured on the Gixxer lineup from the bike’s introduction until 1993. The GSX-R1100K introduced in 1989 bumped displacement to 1127cc from the original bike’s 1052cc and featured a set of 38mm Mikuni “Slingshot” semi-flat slide carburetors for a claimed 143hp and 75lb-ft of torque. Compared to today’s cutting edge superbikes, the GSX-R1100’s 462lb dry weight is still pretty portly and this version of the bike wasn’t especially successful in international racing, but the bike’s fat powerband meant the bike was a highway blaster par excellence and it was a popular choice for drag racing and all-around hooliganism here in the US.

11,225 ORIGINAL miles, bike is in exceptional condition for a 29 year old machine. Untouched, original and exceptionally clean, but not perfect. Bike has been garaged since new. I had not started it or ridden it in about a year. I installed a new battery and drained the fuel bowls and it runs like new. Title is in my name and there are no back fees on registration.  Please feel free to ask me any questions.

Bidding on this clean, original example is up to $7,100.00 with several days left on the auction. This is one of my favorite sportbikes of the period, and this one looks like the perfect candidate for someone who wants a collector they can actually ride: condition appears to be good, but not perfect, and miles are low, but high enough to encourage the new owner add a few more. Suzuki sold lots of these when they were new, but very few remain in anything approaching collectible condition.

Like a big bowl of mom’s mac and cheese, there is little that can sate us like a pristine 1989 Suzuki RGV250SP. If you have followed us for any length of time, you know the numbers on these babies chapter and verse, but a good chorus is always worth repeating.

In ‘89, Suzuki’s two-stroke v-twin GP replica spat out the best part of 60 horsepower from a deliciously peaky powerplant that was endowed with years of GP paddock trickery. The paintwork aped Kevin Schwantz’s RG500 race livery, and outsized brakes and USD forks showed this thing intended no half-assery. It was also a damn sight cheaper than the legions of 1,000cc sportbikes prowling showrooms, and in the right hands could be made to keep up, at least when things got twisty.


Because these things were never sold in the U.S., thanks mostly to the EPA, but in part because we don’t have Europe’s tiered licensing laws, young riders on these shores were left with a bunch of uninspiring sub-500cc machines, or a suite of not beginner-friendly 600s. Wannabe racers in this country never learned the true joy of a featherweight, unforgiving two-stroke ripper.

This 1989 Suzuki RGV250 SP is as nice as they come, and wears nicer suspension front and rear and a close-ratio gearbox to separate itself from the non-SP machines. Everything on the bike is original with the exception of a set of stainless steel front brake lines, and it will be supplied fully serviced. It has a clean US title, so registering it should not pose a problem.

Even today, there isn’t much that weighs as little as this bike and packs a similar wallop, especially if you want blinkers and a license plate. If you really want to separate yourself from the ranks of FZ07s and Gixxers at your local cruise, look no further.
