When Rare Is Just Too Common: Bimota SB8K Ultimo

Things are always interesting in the world of rare and exotic motorcycles.  There seems to be an endless stream of things to ogle and dream about.  For many the top of the list is Bimota.  The storied Italian brand has always produced lust worthy motorcycles in low volume.  Over the years they have used many different engine configurations, from many different manufactures, so there is something for everyone.  In the late 90s Bimota tool the Suzuki TL1000R V Twin and decided it would be perfect for their new SB8R and slightly more intense SB8RS models.  These bikes featured a unique carbon fiber frame section as well as top tier suspension for the day.  In 2000 Bimota was racing an SB8R in WSBK with Anthony Gobert.  The high water mark of the year was a race win at Philip Island.  To celebrate this success, Bimota released the SB8K as an updated version of the SB8R.

The SB8K was the end of the Suzuki powered Bimota era.  Details are scarce on exactly how many were built, but there is no doubt the production run was in the tens, and not hundreds of bikes built.  To make things even more confusing, Bimota also had a few variants of the SB8K.  The “standard”, Gobert, and Santamonica edition round out the field.  Make no mistake, all of these were rare, expensive and interesting options in period.  One can only imagine how amazing it would have been to source one of these bikes new.  But what might be even more amazing is that it seems that there was a market even higher up the food chain.  Apparently there were people that saw the SB8K as too common, or not focused enough, so the SB8K Ultimo was created.

The aptly named Ultimo was dripping with even more high performance and exotic components.  It was the brainchild of the Japanese importer for Bimota, Redbro Racing.  They had a history of turning the wick up on other Bimota for the Japanese market.  For just over 6 million Yen, you got even better Ohlins forks, upgraded brakes, and a host of internal engine modifications.  The Motor breaths through a Moto Corsa Ti exhaust system that is sure to please the ears.

Only 10 SB8K Ultimo bikes were ever built, for the buyer that wanted something very special. This bike has Marchesini magnesium wheels, Brembo mono block brakes, full Ohlins front and rear suspension, Ohlins steering damper. Stack dash, modified ECU, High compression forged pistons, 12:1. High lift cams, Titanium silencers. (moto corsa), Alcantara fabric seat, full carbon body work, tank, sub frame all as standard equipment on this model. The new price when released in Japan was 6,000,000Yen.(39,000pounds) Essentially brand new 22 year old bike, the dash says 38km traveled, but according to Stack, the dash will never read zero as km are added to the dash whilst testing. The Stack dash can be scrolled through many different screens and setting by the pass button on the LHS bar, very cool. I estimate the bike has done 3km. The SB8R isn’t even in the same league as this model. With forks, calipers and wheels alone worth over 10,000Pounds. The bike has been fully serviced and runs like a dream. Included in the buy now price is crating the bike and transport to most major ports. London, LA. etc. Price does not include local import or port charges or insurance. This is a very special, rare bike, running the beautiful TL1000R engine you wont be disappointed adding this one to your collection. It sounds and looks amazing.

In the late 90s and early 2000s it was not uncommon to see owners modifying their vehicles, or well known shops to do a limited run of in house custom builds.  Many of these builds have either not aged well, or have not survived long enough to be collectable.  This example here represents a chance to experience a really interesting period in time again with essentially a brand new bike.  The bike seems perfectly preserved and would be well suited for a static collection, or returned to the road for enjoyment.  The seller appears to be no stranger to the bike, or transporting around the world.  This would be a wonderful benefit to a potential buyer, almost as much as the seller’s offer to crate and ship the bike to your local port.  With anything this rear, it is hard to put an exact value on it.  Currently listed at just under twenty thousand British pounds.  This price point is not for everyone, but when you think about how special this bike is it is hard to think of a better way to spend the money.

Underappreciated, Homologation: The 2001 Ducati 748R

Little can be said about the Ducati 916-996-998 generation of superbikes that has not already been said.  We all know that they are among the most beautiful motorcycles ever created.  Clearly an instant classic and cemented their place in history.  They are a dream bike of many.  Even in standard for there is undeniable appeal.  This also holds true for the many special high performance versions sold over the years.  In order to qualify for some racing classes, manufactures are required to produce a specific number of road going motorcycles.   In the case of Ducati these homologation specials are badged as R models.

When talking Ducati and racing, one can be excused for thinking it all revolves around the World Superbike Championship and forget that the smaller displacement classes offered up some amazing motorcycles.  Take the Ducati 748, as a whole it should have a broad appeal.  An adequate amount of power for road use by mere mortals, and the stunning looks of the larger bother.  And yet the 748 seems shunned with prices lagging well behind a comparable larger engine bike.   This trend also extends to the 748R.

Built in much lower numbers than the 996 and 998 R variants, the 748R featured a plethora of upgrades over the stander offerings.  Ti valves and rods, carbon airbox and a bespoke shower fuel injection system round out the engine.  Ohlins forks and shock mean handling to match the looks.  These even have the amazing story of not really being sold for road use, even though many found ways to don plates.

The $16,950 Buy It Now price has yet to be hit.  That might be a large sum of money for a 748, it is peanuts compared to a 996R these days.  The seller clearly thinks the world of the bike as it is seen in what appears to be his living room.  Too bad the seller could only find a potato to take the pictures with, surely potential buyers will want to see the bike in better light.  With a claimed 700 miles this is sure to be one of the better examples to be available at any time.

For the past couple of years the Ducati Sport Classic series of bikes has been highly sought after.  It stands to reason as the bikes offer epic retro looks in a well rounded and usable package.  They make the right noise, handle well and offer a unique experience.  The Paul Smart has always been the top of the heap in terms of desirability.  Ducati did not add any more power to the 1000cc dual spark air cooled motor, but did toss in some Ohlins suspension to ensure and even better ride.  The instantly recognizable color scheme still looks amazing today.

Featured today is a bike with only 617 miles.  Many of these bikes were purchased new and added to multi bike garages, so finding one with low miles is not hard.  It is a shame to see so many go unridden as that is really where these bikes shine.  Maybe the next buyer will see this as an opportunity to get a bike with low enough miles to be in as new condition, but already has enough miles to not fear taking out from time to time.  The opening bid of $21,500 has yet to be made, and is in keeping with pricing on other Paul Smarts.

Bavarian Rocket: 2014 BMW HP4 COMPETITION

The BMW S1000RR was an instant hit.  Striking looks, amazing performance and mindboggling technology all wrapped up in a quality package.  Weight was kept under 400 pounds and horse power came ever so close to the then magical 200 mark.  In 2012 BMW upped the ante with the the HP4 editions.   More of everything that made the S1000RR so appealing.  The bike listed here features the competition package as well.  This was as good as it gets for the year.

This example has a couple of small, and more importantly, easily reversible modifications.

A bike like this will appeal to someone that is looking for all the technology.  Something completely different to an analog motorcycle.  The list of things this bike has the ability to control is as follows:  Wheelies, ABS, Track ABS, Dampening, Launching.  It also has selectable engine modes for varying conditions as well as a standard quick shifter.

The starting bid of $16,500 has no takers at this point.  That opening price might be optimistic, but the market is all over the place these days.  With under 6k miles and epic performance, the dollar to fun ratio can not be ignored.   These are teetering on the edge between just used, and sought after connoisseur’s motorcycle.  There should be no doubt that these one day will be coveted collectors.

Honda Blackbird: The Forgotten Hyper Bike

When you talk to most people about big bore bruisers most will instantly know the Hayabusa.  Some may even reference the ZX12/14 from Kawasaki, but very few seem to remember the 1100cc Honda Blackbird.

The recipe is simple.  Take a large powerful engine and stick it in a stable and competent frame.  The goal is not to make a razor sharp sports bike, it is to make a mile munching missile.  Think of it as a Bentley vs Ferrari.  Amazing at what they do, but they do very different things.

With almost 140hp on tap, the CB1100XX was actually the worlds fastest motorcycle for a few years.  Tested at over 178 miles per hour, it was only the mighty Hayabusa that could out pace it.

The Blackbird name was a nod to the semi mythical SR71 spy plane.  While the Honda was in production for 9 years, few examples seem to exist today.  Most have massive odometer readings, terrible modification or have just lived a hard life.

The seller spends more time laying out rules to buy the bike then actually providing details, but the pictures seem to tell a story of a clean stock will taken care of motorcycle.  The BIN price of $6500 appears to be a reasonable sum in the current market.  With under 20k miles the bike has plenty of life left in it should the new owner be inclined to ride the bike across continents at high speed as intended.

Hidden Honda Homologation: The 2017 CBR1000RR SP2

For years motorcycle manufactures that have wanted to go racing have been forced to produce homologation specials.  Most of the time these tweaked versions are announced with much fan fair.  They have massive appeal, and often massive MSRPs.  For some reason beyond comprehension Honda just has not bothered to advertise that these editions are available.  Recently there was the 2014 CBR1000RR SP that few knew about.  It featured a laundry list of upgrades over the already excellent standard CBR.  But then in 2017 Honda doubled down.  Not only offering an SP spec, but also and SP2 spec.  This SP2 is really something special.

Claims of over 35 pounds of weight savings, increase of over 10 horse power, top tier suspension, light weight wheel, some of the best brakes money can buy and the use of some exotic materials and manufacturing processes.  This bike was in it to win it.  The press documentation made it clean that thought was put into what race teams would do to prepare the bike for the track.  The cylinder heads featured larger valves with the knowledge that race teams would be porting and polishing to suit their needs.  Best guess is less then 500 where made over a two year span.

This example shows very few miles, and a few choice modifications.  Would be nice to know if the original parts are included.  With an asking price roughly $10,000 less then MSRP this could be an opportunity for someone to jump onto a super rare and interesting modern sport bike without rising massive depreciation.

A Ten on the RAD Scale: Bimota YB10 Dieci

With the recent rise in popularity of all things late 80s and early 90s, there has been a push to find the most RAD vehicle for your local Cars and Coffee.  This Bimota YB will surely turn some heads.

Only 224 of these machines were built, and substantially fewer delivered to the USA.  These were very expensive and exotic bikes when new.  With over 145hp and top tier suspension components this bike will undoubtedly put a smile on the rider’s face.  While some may shy away from an Italian exotic, Bimota deserves a closer look.  Yamaha supplied FZR1000 engine means reasonable and easy service costs as well as a solid parts network to keep the bike going.  Bimota themselves still offer support via their classics department.

This example appears to be well loved by a knowledgeable owner.  In the USA Bimota world, some of the best examples are known to have traded hands through Bimota Spirt in NC.  With fresh suspension and carburetor services, couple with a tank liner and overall clean presentation this bike will offer something that can be used and enjoyed day one.  Many Bimota live a static display life and take a fair bit of work to be returned to the road where they belong.

The $11,000 asking price is in line with other past data.  With the world of ultra rare bikes it is hard to know how wide the delta is between asking and selling prices are.  Either way with what some of the run of the mill superbikes from the Japanese big four have been selling for recently, this could be a chance to have something very unique with amazing styling for similar money.  A bike like this can be so much more then just a riding experience.  It can be a ticket to exclusive events.  This bike was on the lawn at Quail in 2018.

A quintessential 90’s Superbike with Italian styling & handling along with Japanese reliability. A rare hand built motorcycle with a total production of 224 units. 1991 was the first year for the Dieci. It’s an Italian market bike that I purchased from Bimota Spirit over 6 years ago with 8100 km (5000 miles) on the clock. Currently odometer shows 12500 km (7767 miles). Professionally maintained by Jett Tuning in Camarillo, comes with service records. Jett Tuning replaced fork seals and performed front fork service, Mikuni carburettors refurbished, clutch, did tune up, cooling system flush, oil and filter change, etc.

Fuel tank was lined at GTL in North Hollywood, upgraded tank coupling and fuel lines, fresh fuel filter and Acerbis pet cocks. There is no leaks or smoking of any sort, bike runs super strong. All lights and turn signals work great. Tach, speedometer and temp gauge all function. New Yuasa battery with batter tender connectors.

Bike is extremely fast and will hold its own against much newer bikes. FZR1000 motor and Yamaha electronics are very reliable. Engine puts out 145 hp and top speed is 278 km/hr. Carbon fiber 4 into 1 exhaust sounds amazing. Brembo brakes, Marzocchi upside-down forks, brand new Ohlins rear shock custom made for the YB10 and imported from Europe.

Any Bimota is a rolling sculpture of hand machined aluminium billet parts including frame, triple clamp, pull rods, pegs, etc. This YB10 has been maintained and ridden by mature rider. Never been down or dropped, raced or tracked. It’s not a museum example, has wear in line with a 30 year old motorcycle. Was a participant at 2018 Quail Moto Gathering.

California title and current registration good until 10/21. Rare owner’s manual and Bimota garage mat included in the sale. I have a lot invested in this bike, it’s been serviced and ready to ride for many more miles, the only reason this bike is on the market is due to relocation. Price is in line with a market on rarer Italian super bikes, it is firm.

Track Tuesday: Bimota DB5 Lapping Weapon

Longtime RSBFS readers have always indicated they prefer streetable sportbikes on these pages. We’re tipping our toe in the water on Tuesday’s with dedicated track bikes that aren’t streetable but of similar quality to our usual selections. Leave a comment and let us know what you think. -dc

Bimota have always been focused performance machines.  Not for the faint of heart, or wallet.  Many commanded eye watering MSRPs and few had the stomach to track such a rare and finely crafted machine.  Luckily not all heros wear capes, and some Bimota did find their way to the track.  One such example is this 2007 DB5.  It is powered by an air cooled Ducati twin that is said to have the capacity slightly enlarged to 1123cc  and on race fuel produces 116 hp.  Just enough power to provide thrilling performance in a light  package.  Quality Ohlins suspension, forged wheels and Brembo calipers round out the top tier specs.
