Gorilla For Sale – 1986 Suzuki GSX-R1100

The big-bore sportbike can lead a hard life, racing from light to light, changing hands often – it’s rare to see one survive without some half thought-out mods and undamaged, but here is the exception.  The GSX-R models were the right step for Suzuki after many years developing the GS and Katana, introducing the 750 and 1100 to the USA in 1986 and starting a dynasty.  Lightweight for the time, with the beginnings of alloy frame construction and a now legendary powerplant, the GSX-R1100 is a once and future flagship.

Suzuki’s 1052cc mill is air and oil-cooled, with a newly designed two-stage oil pump providing high pressure to the bearings and lower pressure feed to cool the internals.  The carburetted engine with double overhead cams generates 125 hp and 76 ft-lbs. torque.  It’s laid in a cradle of aluminum extrusions welded to cast connectors and steering head, more heavily built than the 750 frame and quite rigid.  Only five speeds are required with all that torque.  41mm front forks are fully adjustable, and Full Floater monoshock rear shock is adjustable for rebound.  Twin 310mm disks are up front with 4-piston calipers, and a single 220mm disk follows.

This GSX-R has almost 12,000 miles but it doesn’t amount to even light wear over just about 30 years.  Surprisingly stock for a liter bike of a certain age, most have been “improved” or all the alloys polished, re-painted or even re-bodied.  Looks super in the pictures, just a couple of notes in the eBay auction:

Has original Air Box, Exhaust, all wire ties, all frame plugs, hardware, assembly check paint on bolt heads, original brush finish on frame. Runs as good as it looks. Bike is 99% original I’d say.

Bidding started almost as soon as it was posted, and there’s no telling what a time machine like this can bring.  Tests from the day praised the big machine’s handling, torque and light weight, it’d be something to step back in time and smash an 11-second quarter-mile or straighten out Laguna Seca…

Red, White and Green Pinstripes – 2007 Ducati 1098S Tricolore

Following the 999 of 2003-06, Ducati returned to a more horizontal look to the superbike with the 1098.  Cadging another 100cc from World SuperBike rulemakers, the 1098 claimed 160 hp, but more importantly a small car-like 90 ft-lbs. of torque.  Improvements were made to the valve train and cooling system, mostly ending overheating and making the 7500-mile valve clearance inspection less likely to result in a shim change.

The superbike that for some time claimed the best street-legal torque over weight ratio, the 1098S is capable of an 11-second quarter mile and 170 mph, leading some to say it’s too much for the street.  The gold trellis frame and Marchesini  forged alloys have the chops to keep up.  All-Ohlins suspension helps out, with 43mm upside-down forks and monoshock on the single-sided swingarm.  Front brakes are 330mm with 4-piston calipers, and the rear is 245mm.  The two-into-one-into-two exhaust begins with a catalyst and ends with twin Termignoni carbon silencers.

Originally owned by Yankee outfielder Bernie Williams, this 1098 has been treated to some nice updates and is looking for its fourth owner.  The second owner put most of the 12,500 miles on, and the third appears to have kept up with the maintenance.  Along the way it’s acquired a few bumps but nothing major.  From the eBay auction:

Tricolore editions number less than 1,000 and this distinctive paint will look super when the faux pas are taken care of.  The 1098 actually had a run even shorter than the 999, giving way to the 1198 after 2008.  With the factory upgrades to the model and the number of quality mods done, this 1098 should be a keeper, and more importantly a rider…

Plain Vanilla ? – 2001 Aprilia RS250

Not the GP replica, but still a bantamweight champ, the streetable RS250 ( full VIN ) is a fun afternoon waiting to happen.  Built for the road from 1995-2002, the RS250 boasts 70-odd hp and just over 300 lbs.

An interesting V-twin of only 249cc, the Suzuki-powered RS250 has Aprilia intake,  ECU, and expansion chambers ( with Arrow carbon mufflers ).  Power comes is strong at 9,000 ( ! ) rpm and redlines at nearly 12,000.  Kick start only, as a starter and bigger battery would push the weight up by almost 10 percent.  Lovely polished aluminum perimeter frame has matching banana swingarm, shaped to accomodate the expansion chambers.  Adjustable Showa 40mm upside-down forks lead the Sachs rear monoshock.  The Brembo brakes could handle a much larger bike – 298 fronts disks with 200 mm rear.  The monoposto layout is surprisingly comfortable for a full size adult.

Only lightly used with under 3,000 miles, this RS250 looks pretty good in the limited photos.  There are some updates, new parts, and repairs that the owner describes in the eBay auction:

New ( Zealand ) 2004 Ducati 998S Final Edition

For some the ultimate Ducati sportbike, the 916 launched a million dreams ( and posters ).  After a 10-year run, the 998S Final Edition was the last 916-based model, and this one was tucked away right after delivery.

998’s were produced only in 2002-03, and by special order in 2004, the 998S FE was a transition from the 916 era to the 999.  The Testastretta deep-sump engine generates 130 hp and will carry the next Superbike generation, though the classic dual-headlight fairing recalls the 996.  Ohlins suspension at both ends are state of the art.  Brakes are 320mm with Brembo four-piston calipers in front, 220mm rear.

Though not a numbered edition, the Final Edition has a plaque on the steering head.  The Italian Tri-colore emblazons the seat fairing.  Dual Termignoni mufflers exit  under the seat.  Steering is stabilized also by Ohlins.

Hidden away when new, this 998S shows only 2 miles and looks perfect.  Never electrified or fueled, as the owner says in the eBay auction:

A unique & rare opportunity to purchase, what is possibly the only brand new 2004 Ducati 998S Final Edition in the world, that’s right this bike has never been started, never had a battery or fuel in it.

A unique chance to acquire what might be considered the ultimate 916, with forward looking engine and eclectic appearance.  A bit of a boat ride unless you hail from Oceania, and likely some work to replace some rubber bits, but a singular moment in Ducati history, and never ridden.  Possibly a collection starter…

Showbike Restored – 1992 Kawasaki ZX-7R K2

Not often a will a dealer restore an older sportbike to mint condition, rarer still if the bike is not a bargain purchase but someone’s polished showbike.  But the Kawasaki ZX-7R K-model can have that effect on people, and the low-mile machine was a good place to start a great restoration.

Built as an homologation special in very low numbers, the K variant has a few key upgrades from the standard.  Flat-slide carburettors which are just a millimeter larger, and after un-doing the factory restriction on the J-model result in 121 hp – a 20% improvement.  A close ratio transmission and slipper clutch are more track-oriented.  Front and rear suspensions are fully adjustable, overcoming the reported poor ride of the base version monoshock.  The exhaust hanger is done differently and of course there’s the solo seat fairing.  Superb standard aluminum frame and floating disc brakes complete the package.

Evidently the previous owner’s baby, the aluminum perimeter frame and swingarm had been mirror-polished .  Part of the restoration was disassembly and painting most of the polished parts the factory gray, however some of the polished bits still show here and there.  The rest of the bike looks cherry, stress cracks in the seat fairing repaired and painted.  Though it only has 8,000-ish miles, the ZX-7R has also been treated to a comprehensive mechanical service, as the eBay auction states:

Our Service Dept has gone completely through this bike from top to bottom. Did a full service on the engine including valve adjustment, valve cover gasket and all fluids and filters are OEM new. The chain and sprockets were replaced with new OEM parts from Kawasaki. Brand new Bridgestone Battlax BT106R tires were installed front and rear. New OEM brake pads and brake fluid were replaced front and rear.

While it’s easy to find a ZX7-R, the K and accompanying enhancements make it a very special machine, must’ve been neat as a bike show winner.  A very well designed and high performing special edition, the fact that it has been returned to factory original make it part of a longer story.  The results appear to have been worth the hours poured into this rare bike…

Yeah Hello – 2006 Ducati SportClassic 1000

Developed as a styling exercise for the 2003 Tokyo Motorcycle Show and offered for sale in late 2005 as a 2006 model, the SportClassic has been a real success story.  Named a “best used bike” by Cycle World in 2014, the 1000cc air-cooled bikes used up-to-date techniques to achieve a vintage feel, and show up regularly in nice shape.

Thought the Paul Smart commemorative and Sport 1000S draw most of the attention and high bids, the SC1000 is a great cafe racer.  The fuel-injected Desmodue has an oil cooler to help the fins, and reliably generates 92 hp.  Sponsons on the side of the tank recall Paul Smart’s #16 racer and increase fuel capacity to almost 4 gallons.  Most versions have two-into-two exhaust, this one has been upgraded to Termognini silencers.  Beefy 43mm upside-down forks are stock, these have been re-built by C-M performance.

2006 was the only SportClassic year with the sculptured monoshock swingarm, the factory Sachs shock on this machine having been replaced by an Ohlins.  While a classic Ducati would always have a dry clutch, this one has been upgraded to one from SpeedyMoto, with their elegant open cover.  Almost invisible rear fender with flying license plate bracket has replaced the factory plastic.  Owner has added fork, frame and swingarm sliders, thankfully unused.

Cover Your Eyes ! – 1992 Yamaha FZR600 Vance & Hines Edition

Last seen here in 2010 with some 1,200 less miles, this FZR600 is as special as speed yellow and magenta.  Together.  A long-lived model built 1989-99, the FZR600 was the lightweight of the 600s, often winning the late braking segment and occasionally the overall shoot-out.  The Vance & Hines colors are a 1992-only edition, and at number 505 0f 636, this FZR600 offers great performance if only an apology to the pillion.

Using a light-gauge steel Deltabox perimeter frame, the FZR600 kept the weight around 450 lbs. fueled, not bad for the time.  The carburetted 4-valve engine delivered 91 hp via a 6-speed transmission.  Yamaha’s EXUP controlled exhaust valve system was on some bikes in this era, but just as well not this one.  Dual disks in front of 298mm diameter, with single 214mm rear, are mounted to 17-inch wheels.

This Vance & Hines edition could use a detailing but looks good overall, having been mildly customized.  The color-coordinated seat looks great, and the rim edges have been polished.  Not sure the steering damper is factory, but it is Vance & Hines.  Exhaust system is polished and the owner states the engine is also, in the eBay auction:

Berliner’s Request – 1979 Moto Guzzi Le Mans CX100

In the late 1970’s, longtime U.S. motorcycle importers Joseph and Michael Berliner requested a 1000cc Moto Guzzi to compete with the BMW R100RS, and while Guzzi had a more touring oriented 1000SP, they capitalized on the Le Man’s good name and introduced the CX100.  Built in 1979 and only 353 units, it’s quite rare to find a stock CX100 these days, most having undergone cosmetic surgery.  The distinctive fairing was honed in Guzzi’s wind tunnel and looks tough but provides stability at speed.

Using gear-driven overhead cams to actuate the 2-valve heads, the 949cc CX100 generates about 80 hp, but a healthy helping of torque.  With the good handling Le Mans frame, forks were up-sized and brake calipers moved behind.  The CX100 is equipped with Guzzi’s linked brake system, which generated many complaints but tested very well.  The colorful and fully equipped dash came over from the 1000SP, and the bars tuck in properly.  The fairing from the Mk. II Le Mans re-design shares the angularity between the handlebar and engine fairings, protecting the rider better than the original bikini.

Stored for many years, this Le Mans has only 2,500 and change miles.  Part of its re-birth was a re-paint, but appears correct and well-detailed.  Hard to see anything that’s not stock here, though the owner states that the airbox is in storage – from the eBay auction:

The motorcycle was purchased from the original owner who had the bike stored in his garage until 3 years ago.
The bike is in fantastic condition , over the years the tank and fairings picked up some scratches from being in a packed garage so naturally I had the bodywork repainted to factory specs. Looks amazing.
The bike is Concours ready, you could ride this bike anywhere or display it in your home, it is that nice!
The mileage is extremely low, I have yet to find another CX100 anywhere that is this nice, or with this low of mileage.
Velocity stacks are running screens right now , but the stock air box is included along with the original owners manual.

Evidently a collector with other Guzzis, this owner has done a smashing restoration of a particular moment in Moto Guzzi history.  Too long and heavy to be too sporty, this bike still cruises at 100 mph with surprising ability in the esses…
