Just last week, a long lost RSBFS friend reached out to me and welcomed my return to the rotation. Our conversation quickly turned to bikes, pricing and we both noted the lack to 2-strokes being offered for sale and how we both missed them.
After the conversation and without hesitation, I fired up the RSBFS GoDuckYouself engine and went in search of a smoker . . . A real smoker, not some weenie post 2000’s oil-mix 4 mix contraption.

As you know by now, I landed on one of the most sought after NSR’s in Forest Gump’s Wide World.



1989 Honda NSR250-SP MC 18 Terra Racing Edition on CL!

The IMPORTANT model specific info:
1. Magtek Wheels – 4.5″ rear
2. Dry Clutch
3. Fully Adjustable Front and Rear Suspension
4. Slippery Terra Racing Bodywork

The IMPORTANT info about this machine:
1. It’s 32 years old
2. It’s ONLY covered 1,450 miles
3. It “appears” to have all of the plastic bodywork tabs in tact. (this is huge!)
4. It has managed to escape the dreaded Japanese corrosion
5. The paint and bodywork “appear” to be in near perfect shape- I’ll come back to this
6. It has spare engine parts

I’ve owned several NSR’s and know all too well the pitfalls of them and based solely on the pictures- this one appears to be the real deal. The seller is asking $12,500 and shipping to your doorstep for around $750. Ouch right? But, unless you have some serious connections and leverage I don’t think you’ll find another one currently for sale stateside. Yes, it’s that rare.

1989 Honda NSR250R SP top specification of *THE* iconic 250cc 2-stroke GP race-replica of the late 1980 to early 90’s. The NSR250R-SP (MC18-1118045 R6K) features distinctive Terra racing livery, Honda Magtek magnesium wheels & dry-clutch.

2170 kilometers shown and regular but limited use over the past 32 years recorded in the inner panels. New battery / fuel / plugs. Runs and rides well. Includes some spares – new OEM Honda pistons / rings / base gaskets / head gaskets / circlips / plugs.

Over our 12 year history, we’ve only featured a handful of Terra Racing NSR 250 SP’s and the majority of them were listings from abroad.

Just as I said I would- I’m getting back to the paint and bodywork . . .
Being the avid photographer I am, I can appreciate the time, effort and vision it takes to create great images. Hell, I’m the first person to hand my camera to anyone who says “Nice camera! I bet it takes great pictures!” My point? These are great images! But, not to a potential buyer of a $12,500, 32 year old machine. I want to see clear, well lit and detail oriented images. A smokey image of a scandalous looking motorcycle, peeking around the corner in and industrial setting is not reassuring to me 😉

Terra Racing Replica: 1989 Honda NSR250R SP for Sale

When you mention “race replicas” the phrase tends to conjure up images of lurid colors and graphics freed from any need for subtlety or adherence to an aesthetically-pleasing color palette. Or is that just me? Maybe just me. Anyway, as much as I personally don’t tend to be a huge fan of them, there are obviously exceptions: I love the Rothmans and Repsol designs, in spite of their unsubtle styles, and MV’s Reparto Corse graphics are pretty cool as well. Of course, the vivid colors and striking graphics obviously serve an important purpose: to help draw attention to what are essentially rolling billboards for the sponsors who pay big money to have their names and logos slapped on these speedy machines. This Honda NSR250R SP Terra Racing Replica is surprisingly subtle, however.

The NSR250R was Honda’s standard bearer in the two-stroke sportbike class that was hotly contested pretty much everywhere but the US, where vast distances, straight roads, emissions legislation, and licensing requirements [or lack thereof] meant that the class is virtually unknown to the mainstream biking community these days. The original MC16 version introduced in 1987 set the tone for the series, with a 90° v-twin, alloy twin-spar frame, RC powervalve, PGM electronic ignition, and giant-killing performance.

Of course, competition from Suzuki, Yamaha, and later Kawasaki were pretty killy as well, and the intense competition saw the bike quickly evolve into the MC18 in 1988 and the MC21 in late 1989, followed by the final MC28 that came along in 1993. This appears to be a late MC18 R6K, the middle-child version of the bike, since it lacks the larger headlight and distinctive “gull-arm” swingarm of the MC21, and the SP denotes the “Sport Production” version that came with a trick dry clutch and Magtek magnesium wheels, along with fully-adjustable suspension.

Power from the 249cc engine would have been rated at 45hp for Japanese-market bikes, but bikes intended for foreign markets and de-restricted versions can make much more. Even in restricted form, the NSR is pretty quick, with less than 320lbs wet to push around, although two-strokes require quite a bit of work to extract the available performance. If you’re interested, top speed is around 130mph, but that’s not the point of the bike. Find a tight racetrack or a set of canyon curves that would tie even a modern literbike in knots, make sure you eat a light breakfast to save a couple pounds, and spend a Sunday morning worshiping at the Temple of Lean.

Up for your consideration is a 1989 Honda NSR250 SP TERRA RACING. This bike is all original minus the full Jha exhaust system, and stainless steel brake lines. From the factory the bike is equipped with a HRC dry clutch, magnesium wheels, and a fully adjustable suspension. The bike sounds amazing and starts first kick every time. The bike  has been fully deregulated and runs absolutely great and is extremely quick despite the cc size. All fluids have recently been serviced as well as two new spark plugs.  Please view all images as this is a 30-year-old original bike with minor imperfections.The bike was legally imported into the United States and I do have a clean and clear Arizona title as well as a full set of aftermarket stock plastics still in the bubble wrap. Bidding is currently up to $5,900 with the reserve not met and very little time left on the auction. There are some minor chips in the decals and paint, and some aftermarket farkles like the steering damper, brake lines, and the front brake rotor buttons are obviously not original and are of questionable taste, but simple enough to change or remove. Although they are surprising, considering the claimed [and indicated] miles. Regardless, it is a clean-looking bike and worth a look if the reserve is set at a reasonable point.

Most states have more relaxed rules regarding importation for classics and this one falls right into that category if you have a spare £5,699.00 (or about $9500 USD) burning a hole in your pocket. I know the Rothmans replicas are the iconic NSR250 but I think these Terra Racing reps are my favorite.  The sellers ad claims 1500 were produced.

Damn, I’m a sucker for those green number plates.  Can there be a more shallow reason to like a bike?

She has around 15,000 miles on her and the seller is asking the equivalent of  $7,800.  It sure would be a nice way to top off a NSR250 collection.

Ok NSR men help me out on this one.  Was this an official replica or just paint the had Cabin Racing colors?  The seller claims a production of 2500 in this color scheme.  Doing an internet search for this bike brought up several photos of the Cup Noodle race NSR’s.  I vaguely remember seeing a picture of a street version of that bike.  Did Honda ever produce a Cup Noodle replica?

 

There’s the reason all RGV250’s don’t have “banana” swing arms.  Honda had the patent on the “Gull Arm” and didn’t appreciated the copy.  Suzuki definitely put more style into it.

 

Sure looks like a nice example to me.  It only shows 6200 miles, has the original two keys and of course a rattling dry clutch.

I really never expected to see one of  these for sale.  As the title says though, “Never say never!”.  The above brochure is what many a young Japanese male lusted after in the late 80’s:  a Honda NSR250SP Terra Racing replica.  The race replica craze was in full swing and most of the Japanese manufactures were glad to oblige.

Prospec baby!  I always get a kick out of the English bits mingled in with the Japanese.

And here is the bike in question.  It has made its’ way from Japan to the UK and is .  No bidding on this one, if you like the price it is yours.  That price in US dollars is roughly $8,600.  Steep but you might have the only one in the country.

I found a great blog entry (edetuckracing.blogspot.com) that gives a great explainer on what makes the  Terra Racing replicas special:

The R6K models were the first true SP’s. They sported the similar gold Magtek magnesium wheels as before, but now with the benchmark 150/60 series tyre, first seen on the R5K. This new SP also had adjustable suspension front and rear; spring preload and rebound dampening on the front, and spring preload, rebound, and compression dampening on the rear, and an all new dry clutch based on the RS250 race bikes. Released to compete with Yamaha’s new TZR250 Reverse Cylinder, Suzuki’s first RGV250, and Kawasaki’s KR1, it was (and still is) an extremely competent road and race bike capable of in excess of 70hp in full race trim! All R6K SP’s were only produced in white and silver Terra Racing colours.

 

This might be the best picture:  it looks pretty darn clean and better yet, corrosion hasn’t begun.  If you’ve owned a bike from Japan where that salty air has gotten the better of it you know why I pointed out the lack of corrosion.  By the way, it only has 8,000 miles on it and it looks completely stock.  Pissed you don’t live in the UK yet?

 Now that will finish off a nice Honda collection.

The 1986 Suzuki GSXR-750. The 1998 Yamaha R-1. The 1989 Kawasaki ZX-7R. The 1993 Honda CBR900RR “Fireblade.” If you seek a collection of the foursome of Japanese sportbikes that pushed our segment of motorcycling forward in a series of quantum leaps, there are no substitutes. The 1993 Honda CBR900RR you see before you would make an awesome start to such a collection.

With around 110 horsepower from an 893cc inline four in a package that was 75 pounds lighter than the Yamaha FZR1000, the Fireblade showed the world that liter-class bikes didn’t need to be pigs, and could, in fact, couple precise handling with wrath-of-God acceleration. There simply was not another bike in the early 1990s that was doing what the diminutive Honda was doing, and it was a good few years before the competitors caught up.

This example may not wear the signature red-white-blue bodywork of the early CBRs, but the black and grey is a worthy second to that livery, and the iconic vented twin headlight face is there in all its glory. It was reportedly kept in a garage as part of a collection, and has been made ready to ride ahead of the sale. The tires look new, and the period-looking Yoshimura pipe is a lovely touch. If the photo gallery is to be believed, there are precious few blemishes.

The mileage shows this one was well ridden before it was put in the collection, but that just means it has been mechanically cared for over its life. With a Honda, there should be nothing to worry about. For the rabid Japanese sportbike fan, this thing is a must-have. And if recent Bring A Trailer craziness is anything to go by, there are hungry buyers out there if you decide it’s not for you.

How’s this for an accidental purchase? The seller of this 1989 Honda NSR250R-SP was on the prowl for an OW-01 or an RC30 (must be nice …) and ended up with this bike through an online shopping error. Not a bad haul, but also not what he was after. Compounding that, he wasn’t able to contact the seller, and so he couldn’t nail down the bike’s history.

I’ll leave the rest of his story to be told in his words, but all he knows about the bike is that it runs beautifully and will never see a California license plate. Buyers in other states might have some luck with the 11-digit VIN, but the Golden State is off the table.

The bike needs a rearset, the turn signals don’t work, the brakes need freshening and it could use some cosmetic fettling, but would otherwise make a great rider. Though California plates are off the table, it carries a clean Arizona title.

This auction is for a 1989 Honda NSR250R-SP. I’m going to start off by being a 100% honest and throwing myself under the bus. I bought this bike completely by accident at the recent Mecum motorcycle auction in Vegas. I know..what a bonehead move but in my defense, I was there to buy two other bikes for my collection and that went great! However, I had to leave the auction Vegas Friday but there were still a couple of other bikes I was interested in over the weekend so I signed in for online bidding from home…getting ready for the usual suspects to pop up (an RC30, an OW and a certain Ducati) but somehow, I pushed the wrong damn button and bought this one…it was actually quite funny but WAY WAY too easy to buy things online so be warned!

Anyway, with the above said, I know next to nothing about this bike. The thing is..it’s impossible to register 11 digit vin bikes in CA and 2 strokes…even that much worse so if you’re in CA, don’t even think about it, you will NEVER get this registered so unless you want it for the track or to restore and collect…move on.

The bad thing about Mecum, you have no chance to talk to the seller so I don’t know a thing about the bike nor it’s history. The only bikes I will ever consider at auction are ones I’m going to restore or have next to zero or super low miles so again, please don’t ask me about maint history or…I’m sorry to say I have no clue!

I will say this though. I took it for a 20 minute ride today and it runs excellent! It’s exceptionally quick, started on the very first kick and the motor seems exceptionally tight and healthy. I know that’s vague but no leaks, the typical smoke at throttle, barely any smoke at idle and it’s powerband feels exactly as it should…exceptionally strong even with my 200 lb’s on her.

The negatives on the ride, signals don’t appear to be working, headlight does though. The brakes are stiff but an easy sort as you know…likely just some fresh pads and a fluid flush / bleed…I can do this for you if you like, really not a problem. Positives….it ran amazing and the dry clutch felt perfect, grabbing just right and not dragging or any odd feel. Clutch sounded great too 🙂

Here’s the only info that came with the bike. “Offered with AZ title, Factory HRC Dry Clutch, Fully Adjustable Front and Rear Suspension, MagTek Magnesium Rims and Factory Terra Racing Colors. That’s it…that’s all I know!

I’m very aware I’m going to lose my tail on this purchase but that’s ok as it was my error and it was an expensive lesson. I have it for sale locally too so don’t wait until the last minute or it may be gone.

As far as my check of the bike…Right rear set is cracked, looks like it happened when it fell over at some point as the right exhaust can has some gravel marks on it…doesn’t appear to be from a lay down as there is no rash anywhere that I see but the rearset is cracked and that’s supposed to happen as it’s pot metal and better to break then hurt the frame. Steering stops look perfect, there’s no excessive corrosion, fork tubes appear straight and no pitting or heavy oxidization. Tank looks fine and clean internally with no rust. Rims are in good shape with some small marks but nothing looks superficial and not structural although X raying Mag wheels is always a good idea if you’re up to it. There are ZERO leaks and I mean none so that’s great. Plugs look new but tires feel dry and could likely use a swap. Clip ons, triple, gauges, swingarm, subframe, etc all appear great with no damage or rash or tweaks. Bodywork is ok…looks nice from far and belly is in remarkably good shape as is nose and tail section but there are quite a few broken little fingers that hold the sides to the nose and some spider cracking around the main bolt stay on the left side panel. They are 100% fixable and since the paint is ok..it’s more just some plastic welding and such as the paint and stickers would be fine if I were to keep it as a rider or track day bike.

I’d consider limiting my loses and restoring it but I already have 3 bikes in pieces that are a priority so this one has to go. You’re more then welcome to come see it, ride it or…. It’s a perfect bike for someone looking for a project bike as the “bones” look great…In fact, I’d say it’s better then an NC35 that I’m restoring!

No additional parts, clean AZ title as I said and for the record, I paid $7000 plus buyers premium of $840 for her. Oh…and 85 doc fees, 385 shipping…. Is what it is…my loss is your gain!

PS. Actual speedo reads 21415 Kms which is 13,306 miles.

Though the seller is prepared to sacrifice his derriere to move the bike, it has seen plenty of active bidding thus far, and has several days left in the auction. Values of these things are near what he paid, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see most of the coin recouped.

Man, this stinks!  I’m stuck here in the Sovietesque RSBFS offices and the boss in away sunning in the tropics.   While he is gone I’m going  to sneak in some more eye candy from the old world.

Whoever runs this shop in the UK has good taste as they are  bringing in some nice and rare NSR’s.   I can’t say I’ve seen a Pentax Edition before and didn’t even know they had sponsored  a Honda race team.  Remember when race teams actually had sponsors?

 

Is it a 1990 or 1991?  It is listed as a 1990 but several web searches came back with 1991.  Is this another case of Japanese domestic bikes being a year ahead of what they exported?

As is usual with the SP’s you get the dry clutch, magnesium wheels and adjustable suspension.  Honda took a different path than Suzuki when it came to race replicas.  Honda clothed their SP’s in racing colors while all the Suzuki VJ22 Lucky Strikes that we love were just standard models.  I’m seeing 1500 as the number produced in this color scheme.

All the stock Honda photo’s show the bike without the “Pentax” stickers.  I’m assuming it came as a sticker kit with the bike.  I know it is just bodywork but like the Cabin and Terra Racing replicas, it would be a nice addition to a collection.
