Signed by the King: 1985 Yamaha RZ500 RN

This 1985 Yamaha RZ500RN is a bread-and-butter bike for us here at RSBFS. It's an old, rare, iconic Japanese sportbike in excellent shape topped off with a few unique touches to separate it from the rest of its thin herd. What's not to like? It has covered fewer than 5,000 miles (just over 7,000 kilometers) in its 33 years, and sports a raft of recent, but period-correct, mods. Oh, yeah, and a front fender signed by 500cc Grand Prix World Champion Kenny Roberts.

1985 Yamaha RZ500RN for sale on eBay

In addition to a recent .030-over rebuild and those lovely JL pipes, the bike wears immaculate paint, and all the plastic, rubber and vinyl surfaces show evidence that the machine was stored indoors and extremely well looked after. Aside from the pipes, the mechanical rebuild featured a carb rejetting, which should work with the exhaust to wake the bike up from its corked stock specifications.

Despite their winning lineage, wild engines and potential for pace, these bikes weren't bought at the same fever pitch as their four-stroke stablemates, so finding them these days, especially ones this nice, is a feat. Prices have been a little across the map, but none can be had for cheap.

Buzzsaw: 1985 Yamaha RZ500 on eBay

The seller of this 1985 Yamaha RZ500 keeps the details light in his eBay posting, but the details he does share are certainly intriguing. The iconic GP replica sports a set of very nice aftermarket Lomas pipes, upgraded forks and wheels from a four-stroke Yamaha FJ, and a top-end rebuild. You cannot really say fairer than that when it comes to an aged two-stroke sport bike. The weird tire sizes and anti-dive forks have gone the way of the Dodo and any questions about maintenance have been answered.

1985 Yamaha RZ500 for sale on eBay

In '85, the Yamaha RZ500 was used to making light work of the big, heavy four-stroke superbikes that comprised its competition, and was riding the wave of Kenny Roberts's Grand Prix successes upon a similar-on-paper machine. It lost a few horsepower and a few kilograms to the Suzuki RG500, but the Yamaha was still no slouch, and was to go down as the more refined and rideable of the two machines. Where the Suzuki shrieked, the Yamaha would bellow.

From the eBay listing:

1985 rz500. Great driver quality bike. Could use some touchups but mechanically very nice. Lomas pipes. 20,000 miles on chassis. 1200 miles on new gaskets, seals, and top end. Have receipts. Has FJ forks and wheels. Oil injection has been removed but comes with bike along with the proper throttle cable. Email any questions. Can send pics of anything you'd like. rd500 2 stroke street legal.

As mentioned, the details are few, but the ones we get are important. The pictures show a beautiful example of a legendary machine, and one that will be just as easy to ride as it will be to collect.

Phase Shifter – 1983 Yamaha RZ500

Here is one that will appeal to riding collectors, a 1983 Yamaha RD500LC, more commonly known as the RZ500.  Never brought into the states, this particular unit is listed as having been imported from Australia and appears to be excellent condition, although not 100% OEM.

1983 Yamaha RZ500 for sale on eBay

Some readers may wonder why the RZ500 is prized by collectors.  After all, 500cc isn't a lot of displacement by today's standards.   But what is forgotten is that the 500cc two strokes dominated motorcycle racing for almost three decades.  Due to the smaller engines, these bikes were fast.  I mean really fast.  Towards the end of the two stroke era companies were building two strokes that weighed about 130kgs (286lbs) and produced almost 200hp.  It should perhaps not be surprising that these bikes developed nicknames such as "the Unrideables"... "Death on wheels"... "The biggest, baddest, most evil racing motorcycles ever to see a race track."

This California RZ has had a startling amount of improvements, engine rebuilt, intake, cooling, and exhaust systems either new or rebuilt, but the whopper is the set of late-model R6 forks and swingarm tailored for it.  With refreshed drivetrain and 30-odd years of suspension and braking improvements aboard, this might be the 500 two-stroke experience without the age-related foibles of a "classic" superbike.  Here is the owner's list from the eBay auction:

*Bill Wilson Faze 1 built motor ~ 7,000 miles, ~100hp

*Custom Bill Wilson throttle junction / choke / oil injection cable / junction box

*Powder Coated frame

*28 mm Mikuni flat slide carbs- all rebuilt and just tuned. Custom individual tuned length throttle cables

*2010 -Yamaha complete R6 front end. Custom triple clamp adapter. Stock forks, triple clamps, clip-ons, brakes and 17” R6 wheel

*2010 -Yamaha custom R6 swingarm- $2100/ in parts alone- striping, machining, polishing and anodizing,

*New 520 sprockets and chain. Custom brake line. Rebuilt caliper. Galfer disc and pads. 17” R6 wheel

*Jim Lomas stainless Steel expansion chambers w/ carbon fiber silencers

*Rebuilt Works Performance rear shock

*New radiator and hoses. Automatic and manual fan on switch,

*New rebuilt CDI ignition

*New rebuilt YPVS box

*Newly repainted and braced, side and bottom panels

*Custom under seat oil injection tank with indicator light

*Gas tank interior sand blasted and coated

*Current California registration

*Re-wiring extensive electrical

*Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa 17” tires

Obviously not meant for the display or museum, this is a rider's RZ.  The experience of accelerating a 500cc two stroke cannot be replicated, and it's nice to know this one can brake and turn its way out of a jam.  California registration is just the cherry on top.  Occasionally you hear that a leading manufacturer should re-introduce their classic bike, sports or muscle car with some up-to-date technology - this might be the next best thing...

Well Presented: 1985 Yamaha RZ500

[1.30.2018 - The eBay listing on this nicely-described RZ500 was pulled before we could post. The bike does not appear to be available, but enjoy the right way to present a bike. MI]

Every once in a while RSBFS staff come across a bike that is both rare AND honestly represented. The latter is often as rare as the machine itself. And speaking of machines, today's offering is no less than the vaunted Yamaha RZ500, a twin-crank V-4 two stroke patterned after the big GP bikes of the day. With a GP-inspired 16" front wheel, full bodywork, and exhausts poking out of the tail section shotgun style, the RZ500 has long been a lusted after model by collectors and riders alike. And this particular bike is so nicely documented by the seller that I will let them take over the narrative at this point. Read (and drool) on!

From the seller:
This is my 1985 Yamaha RZ500 for sale. This is a Canadian Version. This is one of the legendary models that Yamaha built for the street use and if you are already looking at this posting, you may be knowing how valuable these bikes are. The bike is absolute fun to ride, not restored, not molested.

It was imported to USA back in 1986 by the previous/ first owner and he had the bike all these years taken well care of. I bought the bike 2 years back thinking that I will keep it forever as a collection.

Now that I have bought a new house and moving in, I have a lot of financial priorities to take care of and I find no other way than letting this bike go. I myself is a picky person when it comes to things I buy and this bike is really worth it. The joy of riding a 2 stroke in power band is something that you won’t get in any of the new generation bikes as per what I think. The RZ500 is one of its kind that really needs to be known.

More from the seller:
When I bought the bike it was all original untouched in any way. I decided to do a complete engine rebuild as the bike itself was 30 years old and I thought it’s a fair thing to do to make the bike completely reliable to ride myself.

A complete engine rebuild was done by the famous 2 stroke specialist Rick Lance (very well known for Lance Gamma) in October 2016, little over a year ago. No expenses were spared. All the engine seals and gaskets were replaced. New first oversize pistons were installed. All genuine Yamaha parts were used for the rebuild. Anything and Everything related to the engine was taken care of. The water pump, oil pump, YPVS etc. work perfect as they should. It is using stock carburetors and exhausts. I did the break-in run and was carefully done. The bike has run only 580 Kms after the engine rebuild. All fluids were replaced at the time of engine rebuild. However I replaced the engine fluids again and topped up the 2t oil two weeks back because I did the break-in run and thought it would be nice to.

The bike starts usually in one or two kicks and settles to a nice idle and runs real smooth through all the gears.

More from the seller:
A new fuel petcock was installed, and as per Rick’s recommendation, a supplement fuel tap is also installed which is really required for these bikes for shutting off fuel completely from flowing to the system when the bike is not in use, and this is the only additional fitting on the bike other than the stock setup and as per me I really like the supplement petcock as it is very useful and really convenient.

New battery was installed at the time of the engine rebuild and is still almost as new.

Rear brake calipers were completely removed and serviced. However, I would like to change the brake pads for more efficient braking. Just did not get the time to do it, now the new owner could 🙂 (A set of brand new EBC brake pads along with the set of caliper pistons and kit goes with the bike. See the list of items I am giving away with the bike for more details).

The Tires are not new but they are in good condition Metzeler tires. However it’s up to the new owner whether he/she decides to put on a new pair before doing any serious fast riding.

All the electrics work on the bike as they should, the Turn Signals, headlight, rear/brake light, meter lights, horn etc.

Everything on the bike is original. The bike is really clean and well maintained. The pictures speaks for themselves.

More from the seller:
Please read below for the drawbacks and negatives as I think it is and important to mention.

1) The body kit is replaced and is a brand new Australian made high quality kit and price runs over $1000. The body kit was replaced because the bike fell down on the drive way (while parked on kick stand) when I was moving things to my new house. It broke the right side lower cowling screw attachment at 2 points.

2) The right side exhaust also got a scratch mark when it fell which I thought of leaving it alone. (Please see the picture)

I bought a separate super clean gas tank from a seller and got it repainted by a high end professional. High quality DuPont paint was used for the paint job and the color matches perfectly with the new body kit. As said please refer to the pictures and you can see the quality.

This is a 32 Year old bike and will have its own minor blemishes and drawbacks as you could imagine. Please don’t expect a 100% perfect showroom condition bike. There is no warranty or guarantee expressed or implied.

More from the seller:
The bike is currently located in Houston, Texas. It has a clear Texas title in my name.

The reserve price I have kept is very nominal and reasonable as per the market price. I have no intentions to make any profit out of selling it, and I am not a business man.

I hope it finds an owner who is just enthusiastic and a bike lover just like me.

How's that for some detail? Gotta love the attention this seller has put into the advert - and based on the photos one can only assume the same treatment was bestowed on the bike. Sure, it has some use and the pipe rash and replacement plastics are a ding to sanitary originality. The rebuild from a reputable shop is a check in the plus column. The big RZ is the most common of the 500cc smoking set here in the US, but that does not make it cheap by any means. Bidding has started out very slow on this one, and the auction sits at just over $10k with reserve in place. I would expect a bike like this to fetch in the neighborhood of $15k, so there is time and room to move if you are so inclined. Check out all of the details here and enjoy a collectable classic that is begging to be adopted and ridden like its repli-racer looks might suggest. Good luck!!

Christmas Green: 1985 Yamaha RZ500

'Tis the season for seasons greetings, wish lists and good old fashioned commercialism. RSBFS tends to see a lot of great bikes in the week prior to Christmas, and this RZ500 is no exception. With clean plastics, upgraded suspension, a Rick Lance rebuild and an impressive list of updates, this particular RZ promises to be one of the better examples viewed this year - provided you are OK with what can best be called a resto-mod instead of a stone-stock specimen. The upgrades may be a downside for some, as it has been well established that collector machines have the greatest potential when 100% stock. For those that ride, however, some mild breathing spices up the sauce that makes these bikes so special. Intrigued? Read on!

1985 Yamaha RZ500 for sale on eBay

Regular readers of RSBFS will already know the stats, specs and strengths of the RZ500. Still, a bike of this class deserves a quick, remedial refresh: 500cc of two stroke power, arranged in a V formation and sporting twin cranks (think of it as a siamesed pair of 250cc twins), reed valve induction, and individual tuned exhaust pipes for each of the four cylinders. On the chassis side, the RZ offers a mild-steel perimeter frame (aluminum look silver paint notwithstanding), a mono-shock rear suspension, adjustable front forks and the GP-requisite triple disk brakes. All of this is wrapped in sexy plastics with Yamaha racing stripe livery. Touted as a GP bike for the street when it was introduced, the big RZ is one of the prime imports that remain the lust of the American riding set.

From the seller:
1985 YAMAHA RZ500
Offering from my collection ( 2Stroke Passions) one of my best...
I am a true enthusiast and have been for over 50 years . I am not a soulless flipper ... All my motorcycles are stored in a climate controlled dehumidified facility and i ride them.

1985 RZ500 V4. 2stroke complete rebuild and upgraded to better then new . No stock ones problems. Less then 1000 miles since acquired 2012 (20,050 actual before Complete rebuild ). ***Notice I use the word rebuilt not restored I will not abuse or miss use that term . To me restored means to make as news and (original) as possible. This RZ has been made better then new , dependably usable . No expense spared ... Anyone that truly knows RZ500’s know that stock ones were a good place to start they have issues . This one doesn’t :). All proper maintenance and upkeep up to date... Rode last weekend for annual children’s toy ride , ran perfect... big smiles...

More from the seller:
This bike is of Canadian vintage and is Titled and registered here in the States (Arkansas). The motor is freshly rebuilt and performance tuned by the premiere RG/RZ 500 specialist, Lance Gamma (Rick Lance)). The motor is at factory first overbore and assembled with all correct and OEM stock Yamaha parts with modestly ported cylinders and milled heads new gaskets, seals, hoses,. The exhaust system is a beautiful set of Tommy Crawford chambers which are over 30 pounds lighter than stock and have a seamless power delivery with quiet tone. The shock is a premium Wilbers unit with adjustable ride height helping the bike to turn sharper along with a front end overhaul firming up the notoriously soft forks. EBC HH pads improve the braking performance and a Lance Gamma Supplemental Radiator helps even out temps front to rear and keep the motor cool. Manual Fan switch. Stock Petcock fix. Much more. No issues... If you are looking for a stock collector piece to keep your other mildly interesting bikes company, move along. There's nothing to see here. If however, you are wanting to discover for yourself what all the hoopla was about at the release of these bikes some 32 years ago (you remember, GP bikes for the street? What were they thinking??), this is one which will bring you up to speed, so to speak. It simply begs to be ridden. Runs great, wonderful machine. More pictures and Videos available ...

This seller appears to be a true enthusiast, and has built himself an awesome looking RZ. Employing the likes of Rick Lance ensures performance AND reliability, and the listed modifications enhance the overall function of this rare machine. This is very clearly a rider, despite the clean appearance and sano presentation. It's hard to find anything not to like about this one - that fact that it has been properly imported into the US and titled is even better. If I had to pick any nits, it is the lack of mileage information and/or pictures of the gauge cluster. The eBay listing notes zero miles, but that is obviously not the case. The rebuild/refurb does roll back the clock a bit, but it would be nice to know more of the history of the machine.

This is one of the better RZs we have seen this past year. As a result it should be no surprise it is also one of the most pricey RZs we have seen. This seller is looking for top dollar here. From a rider perspective, I can live with the $25k ask. From a collector perspective, this bike represents one fewer of the dwindling number of original RZ500s left in existence. And while that might raise the bar for the remaining stock examples, what does it mean long term for collecting a non-original specimen? I would imagine that there will be no lack of lust for the RZ500 in the future, and one that looks (and likely runs) like this one will continue to grow in value; great will always be worth more. Check this one out here - and note that the seller is open to offers. Good Luck!

Twin-crank V4 two-stroke: 1985 Yamaha RZ500

The Yamaha RZ500 promised GP-bike glory for the every man when it hit the scene in '84, with a quartet of exhaust pipes poking out at odd angles producing a biblical scream. By '85, Suzuki had rained on the parade a little with the RG500, which was lighter, more powerful and a few notches crazier, but the big Yamaha remained a sweet street bike, even if it wasn't king of the boy racer heap any more.

1985 Yamaha RZ500 for sale on eBay

This 1985 Yamaha RZ500 lives in Canada and was pulled from a private collection in the last couple years and given a full engine rebuild to cure the ills of long-term dormancy. In the course of the engine rebuild one of the two crankshafts was replaced after being ruined by a gummed up oil injection pump. Including an ultrasonic carb cleaning and all-new OEM gaskets and pistons, the rebuild supposedly totaled $10,000.

The seller says the bodywork is all original and in mint condition, but the stock seat cowl is missing and one exhaust header is dented.

From the eBay listing:

Here it is, the one you may have been waiting for.

This is not a dried out crusty “time capsule”. Although it was back in 2016 when it was pulled from a private collection. Of course it ran then, but everything was dried out and failing.

The bike under went a full refresh at 7200 klms in 2016 from a well established accredited Yamaha dealer engine was completely torn down to replace every seal and anything else that was needed. The 2 stroke specialist insisted that the bike was to be done correct and kept 100% factory original. Every part used is genuine Yamaha OEM.

Upon closer inspection there was some parts to be found worn including a crank due to a crusty old oil injection pump. So all of that was replaced, also along with all the obvious stuff like seals, gaskets, pistons, etc. Basically, everything was replaced with new YAMAHA OEM parts. Receipt for $10,000 included.

The engine is not modified in anyway it is in “as new” condition, as it left the factory in 1985. Needless to say the carbs are also completely ultrasonically rebuilt. Everything is new on this bike like tires hoses filters fasteners heat shields etc.

The body work is completely mint not a crack or blemish all gauges and indicators work flawlessly. There is no stories or excuses with this bike. Turn key first kick ride reliably across the country today.

Some things to note would be a blemish on an exhaust pipe and the rear seat cowl has yet to be found. As of now it won’t be included with the sale

This is not a backyard restoration this is the real deal. Study the pictures carefully what you see is what you will receive, and it’s beautiful.

A definite museum/collector quality bike that is 100% reliable, issue and leak free to ride and enjoy.

Included with sale is all documentation with the bike. Also a clean title, owners manual, the receipt in excess of $10,000 for the recent “refresh” and a recent appraisal letter from Yamaha stating its value.

Iam happy to assist in anyway I can with shipping and crating.

** DISCLAIMER **
* Although the bike is in pristine condition I will not be offering any kind of guarantee, warranties or returns of any sort.
* I will assist in export in every way possible but Iam not responsible for any unforeseen fees or complications
* The bike is currently insured and I take it out for short rides to keep the juices flowing to ensure it’s always in top condition so the klms may slightly raise.

Overall, this is a really clean, ready-to-ride example of a throw-back repliracer. As long as you can get it over the border from Canada and secure above-board paperwork, it will make a great bike night conversation piece and interesting canyon carver.
