Featured Listing – 1992 Suzuki GSX-R1100 for $15,500 – RSBFS Exclusive

Some of the sharpest bikes that have sold on RSBFS come from Chris Perkins (gsxronly@aol.com). We’re glad when he reaches out since we don’t really have to do much. Immaculate photography and quality collector pieces always make for an easy sales pitch. However, we’re not the only benefactors. When Chris decides to sell, he’s really doing the rest of the world a favor by spreading some his survivors or restomods around for the community to enjoy. His most recent offering is what I like to refer to as an OEM+ 1992 Suzuki GSX-R1100 with 3,172 miles.

There is a strong argument to be made that the Suzukis and Hondas that rolled out of Japan in the 80s and 90s are the hottest collector motorcycles out there today. The combination of Jennifer Anniston-esque aging and now-wealthy prior owners is resulting in incredible values for a generation of bikes that were on death’s doorstep not too long ago. The feel that comes with a bike designed without heavy electronic influence is very hard to achieve today and therefore all the more valuable.

It all started with the GSX-R750. The 750 class of race bikes were very stout due to the sport bike development race that started in the 80s. Eventually, these bikes and their race technology ended up in the hands of enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies across the globe. While the 750 was popular amongst this group, the lust for power never really subsides. The desire for more power meant a need for more displacement. The role of the 1100 in Suzuki’s lineup was to provide time-warping speed with the sporty feel and technology that was present at the racetrack. The 1992 1100 added nearly 25 hp over its original model year and that was mainly due to a 10% bump in displacement and the addition of oil cooling. All that power could spin the GSX-R1100 up to nearly 170 mph. Nothing to scoff at for a bike that is 30 years old.

Although these bikes were incredibly popular during their reign, they did fall on hard times until their recent resurgence. Recently, sky high hp and electronic gizmos has had buyers flocking to modern bikes and left many of these now-classics out to fend for themselves. A quick search on eBay can tell you all you need to know about parts availability and that can be used as a proxy for how many of these are left out there. If you’re interested in these bikes, it’s wise to jump on examples such as today’s featured listing. The seller has serviced many of the wear items and also has the OEM bodywork and a full Yosh pipe, which are extremely valuable pieces of kit on a classic Suzuki. Everything done here is so perfectly tasteful that 99% of enthusiasts would likely guess that this is a fully stock bike. Any additions such as the 1998 GSX-R1100 race-inspired swingarm, Fox rear shock, and steering damper are all quality parts that have a legitimate impact on performance.

Ride it or don’t. Either way you can easily anchor a collection on this bike. Big power. Good looks. Low miles. Road or track capable. It hits on all the right notes. I’m probably preaching to the choir here as most RSBFS readers understand the value proposition of this GSX-R! The RSBFS faithful will undoubtedly know Chris Perkins from GSXRonly.com. Chris has listed some amazing builds on this site, complete with the requisite photography and honest descriptions. And today’s bike is no exception, except that instead of a perfect resto or a mod-rod hammer style big bore build up it is more of a very clean survivor / rider example of the classic liter bike monster, the GSX-R 1100 in beautiful blue & white.

The GSX-R line should require no introductions on these pages, as Suzuki’s revolutionary race bike for the street bowed as a 750 in 1985, introducing light weight and race-spec components that redefined performance for the 750cc class. The 1100 model followed the next year, and similarly made existing liter bikes obsolete. But nothing remains static in the competitive arena of competitive motorcycles, and by 1988 the original 750 had already been upgraded in several areas, including a more robust frame. 1989 introduced similar changes to the 1100 (including a bump in displacement), resulting in the best handling and fastest big Suzuki to date. The 1127cc inline four – still cooled via a combination of air and 2 high-flow oil pumps – churned out 143 HP when new, could rip a quarter mile in the very low 10s, and nudged 170 mph flat out on the top end. Heady stuff for the 1980s.

Today we are seeing earlier generation GSX-Rs evolve into true collector bikes. Time has been kind to the style and the legend that is the Gixxer, but so many of these models were not treated kindly in return. Therefore simply finding a serviceable example of one these bikes from the 1980s is a feat unto itself. And when you find one, you have work to do. Potentially a lot of work, depending upon the condition and how recently it was used. Today’s Featured Listing 1989 Suzuki GSX-R 1100 has already had a pretty thorough going over by the sounds of things, and Chris is very open as to the overall mechanical and cosmetic shape of the machine – in both pictures and words. Many have fond memories of the glorious excess of the 1980s.  A time when more was better, and yet seldom enough.  Currently there is a new found appreciation of some of the iconic design and memorable machines from the era.  Take the Suzuki Katana, long held in high esteem with a cult following.  Suzuki recently announced it would be revive the name in a modern take on the classic design.  The original Katana was a defining bike in many ways for Suzuki.  All of this has caused a surge of interest in the original Katana, and rightfully so.

The 1982 example featured here is no run of the mill Katana, but rather the rare and sought after 1000cc version of the bike.  In an attempt to further broaden the appeal of the Katana line, Suzuki decided to take the bike racing.  The rules stipulated that they could not use the 1100 variant sold it many markets, so they reduced the bore size 2.6mm to bring the displacement to 998cc.  The reduction in engine size did little to effect the power.  With 90hp on tap and a top speed of over 140mph no one doubted the performance credentials.

In the words of the seller:

This 10,872 mile 1982 Suzuki Katana GS1000SZ has been resurrected  with the intent being to treat the project as a bike that was ridden and maintained as an owner would have over the years using skill and quality OEM  parts, not as a museum show piece. As such, the heart of the motorcycle was left intact. The frame has not been painted and still retains the original sticker near the left rear foot area and wear from the previous owner. The motor has not been removed, but has had a light cosmetic treatment and is a 10k mile running unit.  All mechanical issues with this bike were addressed with OEM Suzuki parts whenever available. The bike was started and ran to assess the mechanical status. 

The clutch made some excessive noise so the entire clutch, from the primary drive (no longer available, thanks Mick Hone Suzuki AUS)  fiber and steel clutch plates, new pressure plate, as well as all springs, bearings and washers replaced with OEM parts. 
The carburetors were then removed and disassembled, sonically cleaned and rebuilt.  The tank is solid and the fuel has been rinsed out. A new Suzuki petcock with a new gasket and fresh fuel line installed. Carbs are jetted with the jets it ran on. Has a factory airbox, K&N filter and the Air/Fuel mixture screws  2 1/2 turns out.  Clutch and carb work was performed by Jeremy Lanier of Lanier Racing. 
I would like to thank Jeremy Lanier of Lanier Racing for his assistance, expertise and wit, also Mick Hone from Suzuki Australia for shipping some hard to find vintage Suzuki parts to the USA and Seminole Powersports North for the great parts and service departments. 
The bike has patina and wear from previous years of use, specifically the frame and swing arm that were not disassembled or painted. There are lots of hours of work and plenty of dollars in parts spent on this 39 soon to be 40 year old bike. Introduced in 1981, Suzuki’s Katana looked so radical and futuristic that it polarized the motorcycling community. Since the GSX-R that followed a couple years later really set the standard in terms of styling for pretty much every sportbike that followed, the Katana ended up with a kind of retro-futurist vibe, a bike from an era that only really happened in the minds of the designer. The bones were very traditional, with a twin-shock rear suspension, a 19″ front wheel, and Suzuki’s well-developed but hardly cutting-edge inline four. There’s obviously nothing wrong with 111hp and wind tunnel tested aerodynamics, but those looks were the biggest attraction both then and now. And those looks are on display in this gorgeously restored example.

The striking styling was done by BMW designer Hans Muth and Target Design, and aerodynamics developed using Science! gave a claimed 147mph top speed. Later bikes featured a pop-up headlight that was always intended for the bike, and I’ve always loved the compact gauge cluster that tucks in behind the minimalist screen. The rest of the bike was based on conventional, workmanlike components and proven technology from Suzuki’s vast catalog.

The engine was plenty stout and very reliable: an air/oil-cooled 1074cc dual overhead cam inline four with 16-valve heads and Suzuki’s Twin Swirl Combustion Chamber technology powered the beast, hung in a twin-shock cradle frame that provided stable handling for the hulking, 535lb wet bike. Anti-dive forks up front were a nod to modern technology, although they never worked all that well.

After its introduction in 1981, the bike made it to US shores in 1982 fitted with a 998cc version of the TSCC engine to qualify for Superbike racing, with the full-sized 1074 arriving in 1983. At the time, performance would have been quickly superseded by the GSX-R that soon followed, but those wild looks and musclebike performance make it a fast-appreciating collectible today.

From the Seller: 1983 Suzuki Katana 1100 for Sale

When I took on this project, I approached it as if I were the original owner maintaining the bike as a rider that was well cared for over the years. Trying to strike a balance on original finishes and as preserved as possible. The upper fairing, tank, side vents and side panels are new Suzuki parts. The upper and tank, not sold anymore, are NOS. The tank has never had gas in it. The bike was run with an external bottle prior to final assembly.  When the bike arrived in the shop, it had 19K on the odometer and was documented for title purposes at that time. Upon inspection, sometime around 1985 or so the original gauges were damaged and a Katana 750 set was installed and improperly hardwired on the bike. A new, complete wiring harness was purchased and installed. The proper replacement set of 1100 gauges from Japan were sourced that show 18,820 miles indicated. Title will reflect 19k, as the bike came in.  Bike last titled in 1987.  
Anything that had to come off the bike to be addressed was replaced or repaired to original spec (except carb jetting, K&N and V&H pipe). For example, the tires were replaced so, the wheels were powder coated and new bearings installed. The motor was not pulled from the frame, nor was the frame or swingarm painted. All original patina is present on the frame, including the fragile VIN sticker on the left side. I choose not to paint the frame and swingarm because it is original once. If the new owner wishes to paint the frame and swingarm, that would be their choice and can be handled in this shop. I have the original parts including the old gauge set that were taken off the bike, as well as the rear shocks.

Featured Listing: 1998 Bimota SB6R for Sale

Today’s Featured Listing is a bit of a flashback. We posted this very clean Bimota SB6R in April of last year and, although it didn’t sell at the time, the owner has been doing what you should do with an Italian exotic: enjoying it, racking up an additional 1,300 miles. That means it’s still collector-bike low with just 4,250 miles in total, but the fact that the seller has been riding it should be a big selling point for anyone looking to buy a 90s Bimota. Too many of these bikes sit, admired and displayed instead of being used in anger, slowly succumbing to neglect. Sculptural they may be, but Italian bikes were meant to be ridden.

Bimota made its name building cutting-edge racebikes, but the SB6R is first and foremost a roadbike. Utilizing Suzuki’s powerful and bulletproof liquid-cooled GSX-R1100 engine that displaced 1074cc, the SB6R wasn’t really eligible for many racing classes. But it was used the very best, competition-worthy components available at the time, with triple Brembo brakes, a Paioli fork up front and an Öhlins shock fitted almost horizontally, and was built with Bimota’s usual attention to detail, using  Lotus-founder Colin Chapman’s philosophy: “light makes right.”

With a claimed 156hp from the eminently tunable Gixxer motor pushing a claimed dry weight of just 419lbs, the SB6R is a massively capable roadbike that can easily keep up with modern machines. Keep in mind that the SB6R weighs nearly 100lbs less than the famously fast GSX-R that was powered by the same engine. The flexible powerplant is backed by Suzuki’s five-speed gearbox that takes advantage of the bike’s huge midrange and 74 lb-ft of torque.

As always with a Bimota, the frame is the real star of the show, something casual observers might overlook at first, with all the curvy carbon fiber bodywork on display. But once you notice those massive aluminum spars, they become the bike’s defining feature. The design utilizes Bimota’s “Straight Connection Technology” concept that prioritizes as direct a link as possible between the steering head and the swingarm pivot. It’s not the most practical way to design and build a frame, but Bimota’s goal was ultimate performance, and the matching, asymmetrical swingarm even has “bimota” embossed in one side for an extra does of craftsmanship.

Make no mistake, this was one of the fastest and most exotic motorcycles of the 1990s. Just 600 were ever made, and the model’s life was cut tragically short when Suzuki discontinued the GSX-R1100, then Bimota’s first bankruptcy ended any dreams of a GSX-R1000 powered follow up. It’s a shame, because the earlier SB6 was one of their best-selling models and I much prefer the looks of the later SB6R. This example has serial number 000023 and includes a lightweight Corse exhaust, a very nice bonus. If you want a different exhaust for your SB6R at this point, pretty much your only other option would be something completely custom.

I can’t stress enough how this one’s recent mileage is critical. Many low-mileage collector bikes have spent a lot of time sitting, and will require hefty sums to get them truly road-worthy again: seals, hoses, gaskets, o-rings, gas tanks, tires… It all adds up. That’s fine if you just want to display your exotic, and Bimotas certainly look good standing still. But these really were meant to run, and if you want a collectible you can also take out on weekends to blitz the back roads, this one’s $11,500 asking price is a relative bargain, considering that the SB6R cost a whopping $35,000 in 1998!

Bimota’s SB6R followed the earlier SB6, one of their best-selling models of all time, with approximately 1,200 made. The SB6R likely would have been produced in similar numbers, but for the debacle that was the radical, two-stroke VDue. That bike’s failure pulled the whole company down into bankruptcy, and when the company was resurrected in 2003, the SB6R was not in the lineup, likely due to the discontinuation of the SB6R’s GSX-R1100 powerplant with the demise of that model in 1998.

That GSX-R engine was famously powerful and bulletproof, and was backed by a five-speed gearbox that reflects the bike’s freight-train character: the Bimota’s claimed 156hp might not seem all that impressive, but the liquid-cooled inline four had a storming midrange and the SB6R was very light for the era. Paioli forks up front and an Öhlins shock round out a package that can still embarrass modern motorcycles in skilled hands, but a complete lack of electronic aids means it remains an “experts only” motorcycle.

The SB6R used the SB6’s massive, aluminum “Straight Connection Technology” beam frame, with more modern, conservative bodywork that lost the SB6’s swoopy looks and the exhaust hidden within the tail section. The styling elements of the updated SB6R may be derivative: fairing “speed holes” from a CBR900, a pair of undertail exhausts like a 916, and a trapezoidal headlight like an FZR… Okay, it actually was the headlight from an FZR. But somehow, even though the elements are familiar, the overall look was very much a Bimota. It’s almost the anti-916: bulbous and curving instead of wasp-waisted and slab-sided, built around a beam-frame instead of a trellis, powered by an inline four instead of a twin…

This Bimota certainly isn’t one of the best bikes of the era, but it is one of my personal favorites. This particular example is a rarity, a machine ready for the road that appears to have had the bugs worked out and only some very minor blemishes. It’s also a very low serial number: 000023.

The seller is asking $12,500 for this SB6R, which is on the high-end, but the bike looks to be in highly functional condition, which is critical: Bimotas are often derided for their kit-bike quality when new, so set up is key. The fact that this one is claimed to be ready for the road is kind of a big deal, and mileage is pretty low as well. The Corse exhaust is a nice addition since it reduces weight from high up and at the tail end of the machine, and any Bimota with stock pipes is likely to stay that way at this point, unless you feel like having someone custom fabricate a set for you: just 600 were made so there isn’t much demand for aftermarket parts.

Featured Hot Rod: 1993 Honda CBR900RR / 954RR Hybrid!

Since the dawn of internal combustion there have always been those independent spirits with a vision of speed. The recipe is age old and time worn; take a small vehicle and stuff a big motor into it. The engine swap shuffle has been played many, many times, to vehicles too countless to note. The quest is always the same: start with something good, add more power, and make it better. Manufacturers are not ignorant of this magic spell either – the original Honda CBR900RR is the perfect example of what happens when you take a CBR600 and stuff a 900 into it. Bingo! A factory hot rod is born. What happens when someone takes that hot rod and ups the ante? You get an even hotter hot rod, such as this CBR900RR with motivation from a 954RR mill.

Countless engine swap projects end in a pile of parts. Fewer actually make it to running status, despite looking rather Frankenstein. Fewer still manage to pull off the swap with good looking results. Chris Perkins – the man with the vision and the 900RR – wanted to reach this rare level and beyond. Leafing through the swap info reads like a never-ending set of challenges and innovative solutions (you can read the article at SuperStreetBike.com). The 900RR frame needed to be modified due to the changes in how the 954RR motor was mounted. Solution: A CBR1000 front mount fabricated onto the chassis, with older tabs and mounts removed. The 954RR motor is fuel injected, requiring a change to the fuel tank. Solution: Graft the bottom a 954RR tank into a 900RR tank. Similar challenges were presented with the electrics (a lithium battery makes room for the 954RR ECU), gauges (custom mount to make the 954RR cluster fit in the stock location) and exhaust (modified 954RR pieces). What sounds so simple – stuff a big motor in a small bike chassis – can be tremendously complicated. Chris methodically worked his way through each of these issues with ingenuity and innovation. The resultant machine looks absolutely stock, yet is unique unto itself.

This fantastic melding of old performance into a new hot rod is available directly from the builder. With stock looks and a healthy bump in power, it is sure to be a screamer. So roll with the old-school cool that is the original double R, knowing that beneath the skin you have what it takes to hang with much newer machinery. Not Blue and White: 1991 GSXR-750 in Black and Silver

The Suzuki GSX-R750 is an icon and prices for the first and second generation bikes are already on the rise, with pristine versions of the “slabbie’ and “slingshot” bring top dollar.  This is a 3rd generation bike (it has the glassed in dual headlight) and prices for these haven’t started to climb…yet.

The 1991 model was the last Suzuki GSX-R to use the oil-cooled SACS engine.   For 1991 the focus of the changes was more on usability and comfort than performance, so the bike had a more comfortable seat as well as different headlamps and tail lamps/lights.  The changes resulted in the bike being 15kg heavier than the 1990 model but performance was still good with the bike putting out 116 bhp.

The 1991/3rd edition bikes also offer a new style of bodywork;  a black/silver blue instead of the previous years red/black/white.  Most people seemed to want the classic Suzuki blue/white, probably because it was similar to the bodywork on the Suzuki race bikes and the black/silver/blue didnt sell as well, which makes this particular bike something of a rarity.

This GSX-R750 shows about 28000 miles so it hasn’t been a garage queen but the condition looks to be truly excellent.  The seller indicates that the bike might have some small scuffs and scratches but I am not seeing anything significant in the pictures attached to the auction.   The engine area, seats and tank all look to be in excellent condition.  The bike even appears to come with the standard exhaust which was something that often got removed/replaced with an aftermarket piece.

Whats this 3rd generation GSX-R750 worth?  Well pristine examples of the 2nd generation bikes have gone for prices up to 8300 USD on RSBFS.   The current bid price for this one is under 2000 with reserve not yet met but I expect the price to go up before the auction ends.  Personally I think this one will appeal to someone who had one previously who wants to relive a bit of their hooligan youth or a collector who wants to take a bit of a gamble on whether these 3rd generation bikes will increase in value like the 1st and 2nd generation have.  Or maybe somebody who just likes the blue wheels…
