Featured Listing – 1997 Suzuki RGV250/SP VJ23 by Speedwerks

Today’s Featured Listing is brought to us by longtime RSBFS sponsor and supporter Speedwerks. If you are not familiar with Speedwerks, they are a shop based in Delaware that for nearly 30 years have turned out beautifully prepared and restored examples of bikes that we all drool over. If you don’t believe me, check out their shop directly (www.Speedwerks.com or www.facebook.com/speedwerks), and for some history, check out some of the Speedwerks bikes that have been featured over the years on RSBFS: Search Speedwerks.

Featured Listing – 1997 Suzuki RGV250/SP VJ23 by Speedwerks

The RGV250 world changed with the introduction of the VJ23. The last of the RGV series, the VJ23 introduced an entirely new configuration for the two-stroke twin cylinder, affecting the remainder of the overall package dramatically. Gone was the popular 90 degree v-twin that powered the earlier VJ21 and VJ22 series bikes. In its place was a more compact 70 degree unit. Displacement was still 249cc, but that displacement was achieved by a square bore-stroke ratio, as opposed to the earlier models which had a bigger bore and less stroke (over square). The new motor fit more optimally in the twin-spar aluminum frame, providing better handling with improved weight distribution. Suspention consisted of an upside down front fork and rising rate linkage in the rear – both fully adjustable. Electric start was included in the package (no more kick starting or bump starting), and even with such luxurious appointments the whole package still came in under 300 lbs! The SP designation adds even more tasty goodies, including a close-ratio 6-speed gearbox driven by a dry clutch.

From the seller:
This 1997 RGV250/SP VJ23 is by far the nicest, original one we’ve had come through here. There are no stories, no Chinese panels and no excuses’. The Pic’s speak for themselves. We discovered this VJ23 with the help of our friend Rick Deegan of RMD Motors in Japan.

We’ve bought and sold a lot of bikes and Vehicles through Rick/RMD and although he’s a bit ‘Colorful’ at times, he has always been honest and straight forward regarding the machines he sells, this one is no exception and doesn’t disappoint. We struck a deal and purchased it earlier this year. This Suzuki has had only ONE Original Owner in Japan and the gentleman bought it brand new as a 1997 model year. This was a leftover and it was first dealer registered in the year 1999.

In his ownership he racked up 11,900 kms. installed a set of WRS rear sets, kept it serviced regularly, otherwise it’s remained original and unmolested. He was fortunate to have a large house with a garage, where this machine was kept from the harsh salt elements that plague most aluminum and steel on the Japanese island. Consequently, there is none on this chassis.

More from the seller:
The Japanese Documentation is included, along with the 2 Dealer Keys, Manual, Warranty Book, and Factory tool kit.

As evident in the photo’s we did an extensive time consuming service and a borderline OCD detail job on the Chassis. The body is original, shiny and beautiful. All fluids, Fuel system, Carbs, Plugs, Air, Gear Oil and Coolant. The front suspension was also refreshed with new seals, bushings and Bell Ray fork oil. Rear shock refreshed and checked.

Finally a new set of Dunlops were spooned on and this beautiful RGV/SP is ready to;
– add to your collection.
– blast thru the canyons to Alice’s for lunch.
– Use a daily/Sunday rider.

Enclosed, Private delivery is available in the Cont. USA. and included at $24,000.
We can also crate the machine and assist with air or sea freight anywhere in the world.

Asking Price: $24,000
(price includes personal delivery in the continental US – no risky shipping companies!)

As highlighted, this is a home market VJ23 imported directly from Japan. That means that this particular example is restricted in terms of power output. This affects any Japanese home market bike, as the government imposed power limitations in order to curb high-speed street riding. Suzuki did produce these models for export outside of Japan, and those bikes do not have the power restriction. Steve from Speedwerks notes that full power export models will have a black VIN plate riveted to the right side of the frame, just behind the neck, a non-restricted ECU, a modified airbox, a 240kms speedo, and a black cap on the rear master reservoir. If you are shopping for a full power model don’t give up: Speedwerks has one available for restoration with the identical color scheme as today’s home market example (contact Steve for details).

As with all the bikes we have seen come out of the Speedwerks shop – whether they are race bikes or really rare gray market examples such as this 1997 Suzuki RGV250 SP – this bike is immaculate. It has a wonderful back story as a one-owner ride, and the numerous pictures show what is perhaps the best of the VJ23 breed we have seen. As the last series produced by Suzuki, these are rare and sought after bikes. The SP configuration is the one you want, and with only 7,300-ish miles showing this one looks like it will bring joy to a new owner for many years to come. Did I mention that this is the LAST of the factory two strokes ever offered? How about electric start? The best by Suzuki presented by one of the best shops we know, Speedwerks is now offering this exquisite example of RGV250 SP VJ23 imported goodness for an asking price of $24,000 (includes deliver in the continental United States). Here is a link to all 100+ photos of this amazing machine. Contact Steve directly (steve@speedwerks.com) for more details. Good Luck, and thanks to Speedwerks for being such a long time supporter of this site!

Sponsored Listing – 1993 Kawasaki ZX-7 from Speedwerks !

Update 9.19.2020: This bike has SOLD to an RSBFS reader! Congratulations to buyer and seller! -dc

Long time RSBFS sponsor, Speedwerks, has trained their restorative techniques on a 1993 Kawi, and ensured that its outstanding looks are backed up by a healthy dose of attention from their service technicians.

1993 Kawasaki ZX-7 for sale at Speedwerks

Coming out in the heart of the sportbike era, the ZX-7 came with a warranty, but change was guaranteed every year, with manufacturers throwing their level best at the AMA and World Superbikes.  For ’93 an all new top end cooked up 118 hp for the 749cc four, using four 38mm Keihin carburetors and a new single intake for ram air.  Multi-adjustable USD forks and Uni-Trak monoshock, plus 17-inch wheels were found at either end, along with 320mm front disks.  The riding position got good marks and a theoretical passenger is possible on the biposto seat console.

Evidently being re-activated after some years in a collection, this ZX-7 has the full nineties treatment, right down to the orange-fade-to-purple logos.  Exterior condition is way better than excellent, with just an isolated rub visible.  The tail treatment leaves a clean surface under the seat, and the green windscreen shows the previous owner was a fan.  Steve’s comments about the ZX-7:

This is a good rider or bust out your parachute pants, comb back your mullet and become a collector.
We received this machine from a private collection, where it sat on display for years.
It is original sans the Zero Gravity windscreen and Targa undertail.
We preformed a complete service and it is 100% operational, as it would have been in 1993.
The tires are original/period correct Dunlop 208’s, in great shape but should be updated to ride daily.
There are a few scars in the paint work but overall it shows very well.

Speedwerks is asking $6,500 for this time capsule and Steve can be reached on (302)672-RACE or via email – here -.

As evidence of a winning design, with Rob Muzzy’s preparation, Scott Russell took his ZX-7R to the AMA Superbike championship in 1992, and claimed the World Superbike the next year.  Since they occupied the lower pricing tier with Suzuki, few have been babied or cared for like this example.  This might be a show bike for the next owner, but is also ready to provide the superbike experience from almost thirty years ago as well.

Contact Steve at Speedwerks for more information on this exceptional ZX-7, (302)672-RACE or via email – here -.

Featured Listing – 1995 Honda RVF400R Restored by Speedwerks

Update 12.20.2017: Steve has updated us that this bike has SOLD! Congratulations to buyer and seller! He also mentions that he has an even nicer one that will be ready in early January, stay tuned! -dc

As profiled in the 1984 edition of Cycle World’s occasional “Forbidden Fruit” column, the RVF400R / NC35 was a world-beating junior but accompanied the legendary RVF750R / RC45 only to the home market.  RSBFS sponsor Speedwerks has given this example a new lease on life.  The 399cc V-4 has been comprehensively freshened with new fluids and filters, seals and tires, chain and titanium exhaust.  With Ohio title, it’s ready for a new rider.

The NC35 had several nice updates to the earlier VFR400R, mechanical in the 41mm upside-down forks, Pro-Arm rear monoshock, 17″ wheels front and rear, and cosmetic in the cat-eye headlights.  61 hp is available at a lofty 12,500 rpm, the gear-driven cams whining their way to the beat of the “big bang” crank timing.  Build quality and reliability was above the rest of the junior market, though the price was a dry weight of just under 365 lbs.

Speedwerks has been restoring and preparing sportbikes for more than 20 years, and the results of their experience are apparent here.  Painted and plated parts are correctly colored and finished, rubber parts renewed, and the aftermarket fairings have factory livery.  After the carb rebuild and new exhaust, a tuning session on the dyno was done.  Here are Steve’s notes from the build:

Honda RVF400RR NC35. 33K miles, Clean US title, Fully Serviced and dyno tuned, runs and rides as new.
Demon titanium exhaust. Mobil 1 synthetic with Hi-Flo filter, Antifreeze flushed/filled,
Steel braided brake lines, bled with Castrol fluid and fitted with new Ferodo pads.
EK chain, Carbs rebuilt and jetted, new fuel lines and filter, NGK ER9EH plugs.
New Bridgestones fitted, RS10 soft front, S20 dual rear. Fresh fork oil and seals.
Bodywork is aftermarket and shows well, the paint is very nice.
This RVF is a good reliable rider, ready for a good home. Personal delivery available.

Speedwerks is asking $8999, contact Steve by email (steve@speedwerks.com) or visit their Facebook page.

Featured Listing: Aprilia RS250 from Speedwerks

Update 10.27.2017: SOLD! Congratulations to buyer and seller! -dc

This Aprilia RS250 is being sold by Speedwerks, good friends of RSBFS and a meticulous bunch whose offerings are always top notch. This quarter-liter ripper is no exception, having recently undergone a thorough mechanical and cosmetic freshening. The long list of new stuff includes Brembo brake master cylinder, pads and lines and a set of sticky Bridgestone 090s.

The RS250 is essentially the lights-and-mirrors version of Aprilia’s RSV grand prix bike, and employs a 90-degree Suzuki VJ22 two-stroke v-twin. The RS line was one of the last serious street-legal two-stroke featherweights, and should feel more like a modern motorcycle than some of Japan’s older options.

Though the VJ22 is limited to 45 horses in Japanese trim, Aprilia did what they could with the CDI box to change that, and Speedwerks have added custom exhausts, re-jetted the carbs and fitted a CDI that gives the twin its full complement of ponies. As it sits, the bike should be good for somewhere around 60 horsepower.

The benefit of a thorough going-over with new paint, graphics and bodywork shows; this thing is ludicrously pretty for an aged, all-or-nothing canyon carver.

From Speedwerks:

Very nice example of Aprilia’s 250cc Two Stroke Sportbike. This particular machine has undergone a full service and ‘rider restoration’ in our shop. Engine was inspected, serviced and all fluids replaced. Carbs were rebuilt with new lines and filter installed. tested on our Dynojet chassis dyno.
Power valve drains fitted, NGK plugs and new air filter. New OEM Brembo master cylinder fitted and new brake pads, steel braided front brake lines. New Bridgestone 090 tires, along with a new DID x-ring chain and battery.
Full Power S.A.P.C. (ECU).
The fairings are original and were professionally resprayed in the factory gloss black, the tail section and decals are 3M 1080 series carbon fiber. All components of this machine operate and function as they should. Titled and ready to ride.
Post sale transportation, parts and service are available. Ck our Facebook page for more cool gray market bikes for sale. /speedwerks. Any questions please email or call. 302-672-RACE

Featured Listing: 1990 Suzuki RGV250 VJ21 Available From SpeedWerks

DSC_0001

Today’s Featured Listing is this titled Suzuki RGV250 from Speedwerks in Delaware. We’ve had the pleasure of working with SpeedWerks for over 5 years and every time they roll out a new offering, it makes readers in the know take notice. They always great rare sportbikes available for restorations and custom builds.

DSC_0004

The VJ21 RGV250 is a pretty uncomplicated machine, though 1990 marks the first year for adjustable suspension not only up front but in back as well (though this example wears an upgraded GSXR unit). The brochure reads under 300lbs and nearly 60hp, which means featherweight handling and a big punch in power when the power valves hit.

DSC_0005

from the seller:

1990 Suzuki RGV250 VJ21, titled correctly with original VIN. This bike could be described as a ‘good rider’. It has the original tank on bike and original bodywork included that needs to be restored. It is currently fitted with a decent after market body kit. Has Bridgestone 090 take-offs, new brake pads and steel braided lines front and rear. Upgraded GSXR shock. Stock carbs, airbox and oil injection. Motor was recently rebuilt (not by us) though we have inspected the cylinders, reeds, and pistons. It also has aftermarket power valves. New clutch and all fluids replaced. Standard exhaust fitted and we have Tyga Stainless side by side’s in stock if you so choose. $7500 obo

Contact Steve by email (steve@speedwerks.com) or visit his website.

While many of the SpeedWerks bikes we have featured were fully restored show queens, this one strikes a nice balance for someone looking to actually ride and enjoy a great looking two stroke we never got in the states. Looking at the bike closely in the pictures you can spot some patina but the rest is so tidy and clean that this bike could really suit multiple roles as track day bike, bike night discussion piece, and after work therapy machine.

Many thanks to SpeedWerks for continuing to support the site. Good luck to buyers and seller!

1994 Honda NSR250 Rothmans for sale

When we first saw this Rothmans edition, SpeedWerks had recently completed a restoration on it in 2010. It’s back now on eBay and still looks incredibly fresh. Buy-it-now is set at a pretty reasonable $9000 considering it also wears that all important piece of California jewelry above the rear wheel with a 2015 stamp on it.
