Doppelganger – 2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Reloaded Edition

Like Agent Smith inhabited Bane’s real body, the 998 cloaked the new Ducati testastretta in the familiar 916/996 package.  This Virginia example is offered by the original dealer and looks excellent.

First introduced in the 996R, the early testastretta engine was seriously oversquare ( 104 mm bore x 58.8 mm stroke ) and cooked up 123 hp.  The classic trellis frame was silver and a nice contrast with the metallic green bodywork.  Gold accents on the Showa titanium nitrided forks, 320mm Brembo brakes and Öhlins monoshock showed off the premium components.

Evidently a franchise dealer back in the day, the seller is now an independent but has serviced the bike for its 12K-plus miles.  Not sure there are any mods beside the Arrow exhaust, and the condition is immaculate.  Comments from the eBay auction:

This wonderful example was sold new at our shop when we were a Ducati Dealer and has been a local bike ever since. The bike has just received a full and inclusive 12K Service including but not limited to; valve adjustment, throttle body synchronization, new belts, new fuel filter, all fluids, all critical fasteners checked, brake service, clean lube and adjust chain. Ready to Ride!!! Buy It Now price includes either black or original silver five spoke Marchesini Wheels.

The 998 won in WSBK and the dealerships, and was a memorable superbike when the 999 styling failed to impress fans.  The Matrix Edition number just a few hundred and always attract attention.  The ( ahem ) trinity of long time dealer service, super and collectible condition, and up-to-date maintenance should make for a winning combination.

Update 3.22.2019: Now on eBay as well. Links added. Good luck to buyers and seller! -dc

The 998 Matrix Reloaded Edition appears only occasionally on RSBFS, and this Featured Listing is owned by a collector, in primo condition with some choice updates.  It’s a rarity as only a couple of hundred were made, and is one of the high peaks of the classic Ducati superbike family.

The 998 had first-generation testastretta cylinder heads, with revised valve angles for better reliability and reduced maintenance, not to mention 123 hp !  Shortened intakes and electronic fuel injection improved throttle response, and an additional cooling fan whispered a prayer when caught in traffic.  The Matrix edition had top-of-the-line Showa forks, with an Öhlins monoshock, and steering damper to boot.  Brembo brakes and dry clutch are de rigueur for a Ducati superbike and the 320mm disks on the Matrix had outstanding reviews.  It’s a biposto ( after all, Trinity had to have a place for the Keymaker ) but the black seats don’t clash with the deep green paint.

Stephen in New York has taken nice care of this 998, equipping it with nicer Termignoni carbon underseat mufflers, a billet clutch and carbon covers that top the fairings.  Mileage is just under 9,000 and it’s cleaned and detailed nicely enough to be in the dining room.  The owner’s comments:

one of 217 supposedly ever built w 8976 miles
adult owned and dealer maintained
kept wrapped in heated garage and never down on a tender
Full Termignoni Carbon Fibre exhaust
Carbon Fibre top panels replacing plastic stock pieces
Billet Pressure Plate and open clutch cover
Ohlins rear shock
LED integrated tail lights
Mirror Integrated turn signals
never down w 3 minor scratches (didn’t want to touch so minor)
bike has been meticulously owner maintained

Ducati got a lot of – excitement – for their product placement in the sequel, way more than GM who seemingly rolled hundreds of cars.  Likewise 998 Matrix owners, who stayed out of the -R or -SPS spending spree but still had a very sharp-edged tool.  This 998 looks to have been carefully ridden and maintained, and Stephen asks $12,000 for his copy.  He requests questions and offers by email – here –.

Featured Listing: 2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Edition

If you feel like snagging a patent-leather set of, um, leathers and flying around the Oakland freeways like Trinity did in The Matrix Reloaded, may we present your ride. The bike from the original Hollywood scene was a 2001 Ducati 996, but by the time the movie came out, Ducati’s 998 had reached dealers. So sci fi fans were treated to a 2004 Ducati 998 wearing a beautiful metallic green paintjob and some stickers bearing the title of the movie.

Under the skin, the bike was a standard 998, sporting an Ohlins fully-adjustable rear shock and adjustable Showa forks. The Tetrastretta twin pushed out somewhere around 120 horsepower in the final iteration of the iconic 916 body shape. As Ducati special editions from the mid-aughties go, this one is pretty light on special details, but its lineage is enough to make collectors drool.

Production numbers are hard to pin down. The seller says around 200 were built, while various Internet sources claim between 150 and 200, or just flat out admit they have no idea. Suffice to say, there aren’t a ton of these things kicking around.

Aside from a tear in the seat, as noted in the Craigslist posting, and aftermarket rearsets, this 2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Edition is as it left the dealer. The seller notes that the bike has been displayed for the last few years on slicks and a non-op title. Before it was put to rest, it reportedly ran well, though it was apparently a lemon law buyback.

From the Craigslist post:

Rare Matrix edition, only about 200 units built. Collector’s bike.
This bike is prepped for display. Fluids and battery removed, slicks installed. It has been like that in my living room for the last 5 years. It was running well before.
Non operable, title in hand, says “lemon law buyback”.
No scratches, great condition. Small tear in rear seat as depicted. Everything original except for rear sets.
Rear stand included. Dog not included.

With 12,000 miles on the dial, we have to guess that whatever issues this bike had from the factory have been handled. And, at $7,000, it’s a semi-affordable way to own a rare Ducati in an iconic body style.

Victim of Causality – 2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Reloaded Edition

Caught in its own time-warp, the 2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Reloaded Edition actually commemorated a 996 used in the movie shoot.  The post-production delay benefited the bike, with new testastretta engine and 123 hp.  This example has under 2,500 miles and has been carefully kept.

2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Reloaded Edition for sale on eBay

Probably the ultimate development of the 916 family without resorting to -R or -SPS spending, the 998 transitioned the desmoquattro to the narrow-head engine, with its reduced valve angles and longer maintenance intervals.  Power and torque are a little beyond what’s fun on the road, but suspension and brakes are nicely spec’ed, with Showa fork, Öhlins monoshock, and 320mm Brembo brakes.  Looks are classic superbike, though in a strange green paint.

Spotless and un-farkeled except for the Remus exhaust and clutch cover, this Matrix is ready for its close-up.  The owner sticks to the facts in the eBay auction:

Ducati 998 matrix edition 1 of only 500 made. Special edition final year of the 998 which is one the best bikes Ducati ever made.

Miles: 2,410
Year 2004
Color: Green
Tires like new
Runs Great
Super clean

Original owner with clean title in hand. In excellent condition never dropped or abused. Garaged and parked inside.

Reviewed as a ride to look forward to every single time, the 998 could also be finicky and used an older cooling system design.  But at or above highway speeds, pressure on the handgrips lightens up and miles reel off.  This owner has set the buy-it-now right up there, but graciously provided the “make offer” button.  In a rare event, new and newer superbikes shared the 2004 showroom, the 999 waiting in the wings and the seas just about to change.  But this 998 might be just the thing for the back-to-basics, special edition, or anything-but-red fan …

Green Party – 2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Reloaded Edition

Peculiar as only a green Ducati superbike can be, the 2004 Matrix Reloaded edition commemorated a 996 that was used in 2002 to film the movie which was released in 2003. Still the early testastretta engine had a great platform in the mature 916/996 chassis, and is a great collectible and rider.

2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Reloaded Edition for sale on eBay

Using a familiar desmodue crankcase but all new hardparts and valvetrain, the 998 had 123 hp available.  The Matrix is trimmed out in silver and occasional gold, the silver trellis frame having Showa forks with Ti-nitrided sliders and gold Öhlins monoshock.  Centers for the Brembo 320mm floating rotors are also gold anodized and 4-piston calipers of course painted gold.  With the last of the iconic side-by-side headlights, the green fairing requires a scrunch to really get under the 165 mph wind, but can do an 11-second 1/4 with the right rider.

Looking substantially stock with only a boo-boo or two for its 12,500 miles, this 998 has been and could continue to be enjoyed.  Some maintenance history is offered, and the owner has updated the exhaust to Silmoto slip-ons as well as removed the rear turn signals in favor of the popular LED tailight / directionals.  He says this in the eBay auction:

2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Edition. Very limited production (1 year only, about 250 made). Factory green paint. Adult ridden, and well cared for. About 12500 miles on it. Newer tires, oil changed recently. Upgrades include: SILMOTO carbon fiber exhaust, carbon fiber heel plates, heat shield, chain guard and sprocket cover, Pipercross air filter, integrated rear tail light/ turn signals and open clutch cover. Dyno tested at 114 HP at the rear wheel with a very good power band. Rear stand included with “buy it now” price. NEVER ON A TRACK!

Possibly the ultimate base model of its generation, the 1098 reviewed with stable if heavyweight handling and great usable powerband.  The distinctive Matrix colors are a bonus for the fan or collector with a stable of red and yellow Ducs.  The ask seems optimistic here but certainly bears watching.  The rideable condition of this 998 would be great to re-create Neo’s escape with the Keymaker or with its rarity, the basis for an easy restoration…

You look surprised to see me, again, Mr. Anderson – 2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Reloaded Edition

Toward the end of the 998 model’s run of 2002-04, the company made a special color edition after a Ducati was used in the 2003 film, Matrix Reloaded.  A non-standard color and with special badges, but otherwise a 998, the final update of Tamburini’s legendary 916.  A commemorative as rare as a green Ducati, only around 150 were made.

The final version of the 916 generation had 123 hp on tap, thanks to the new testastretta 4-valve heads.  If not on the move all that power can be hard to keep cool.  Contrasting silver trellis frame looks great under the green fairings.  The hydraulically actuated dry clutch might be the best of both worlds.  Not a lightweight at just over 400 lbs, it relies on 320mm front disk brakes and 220mm rear.  Showa supplied adjustable forks and Ohlins the shock for the bike, supporting a sweet cast aluminum single-sided swingarm.  Nice factory steering damper, and Termignoni fabricated the aluminum mufflers.

This 998 looks great and the owner is very proud, and he states in the eBay auction:

This is a 2004-Limited Edition Ducati 998 Matrix Reloaded.  Its in Excellent condition, low miles and always been garaged and on a front wheel chalk block.  It has a clear title and never had any problem.  It has been regularly maintained with tune up.  I have put on brand new rear turn signals that are sequential integrated LEDs and Beautiful!!   When I got the bike it had a 1098 wiring harness on it for the rear lights and was not functioning properly.  The harness was removed and the original wires that were zip corded up, I rewired the original wires.  The rear marker lights work perfect and are very bright!  That was the only issue I have had.  The bike is very well cleaned and I have personally detailed it from top to bottom!  The bike comes with the front chalk block where you can keep the kickstand up and it wont fall over!  Awesome garage feature and a set of new tie-down straps!  I have all the paperwork, maintenance documents, factory 998 book!  Which alone is very RARE!!  The coolant has been ran with anitfreeze and water-wetter to maintain a cooler running temp which works perfectly and on average keeps the bike about 15 degrees cooler.

Looking very stock as the owner states, super-clean and nice low miles, includes free-standing wheel chock.   Though the high minimum bid might be an impediment to some, but except for the -S and -R models, this is the ultimate bike of the 916 generation.  The 998’s speed requires special attention to ride on the street, and forget about splitting lanes in head-on traffic – – ( a 996 was used in the movie ) – a rare and very distinctive Ducati…

2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Edition: BRAND NEW!

Ducati 998 Matrix For Sale

I always enjoy seeing a Matrix edition as it’s such a departure from the regular red or yellow standard Ducati superbike colors. It appears black in the film but as you can tell it’s actually a dark green. In any case, we don’t get the opportunity to post them very often. Especially brand new! Yes this is out of the collections that is being emptied in Michigan and it looks like another great opportunity for a collector to cherry pick another favorite. Buy-it-now is set at $16k.

Green, The New Red:  2004 998 Ducati Matrix Special Edition

To be honest, I never paid much attention to Ducati’s marketing exercise with the 998 Matrix Special Edition.  I wasn’t going to go buy a bike because I saw some helmet less chick in bondage gear ride one in a movie chase  scene.  Having said that, I haven’t seen one in a while and well,  that green looks damn good.  In a sea of Ducati red and the odd yellow and black the Matrix Edition stands out.

This one is a looks to be a darn nice example.  It only has 6,500 miles on it and has a few tasteful upgrades.  The most unique of those would be the Matrix monoposto tail which is quite a rare item.  The bike also has a set of FBF mufflers (might be a whole system, not sure) and Ducati Racing Brembo wheels.  As you can see from the picture the seller still has the original wheels as well.  There is a little carbon fiber sprinkled in there as well.  If you are a movie buff the seller also has some Matrix movie memorabilia to go along with the sell.

I can’t say I’ve seen one of these before.  A nice option to have if the wife trys to tag along.

Thank God the lawyers got this on the bike.  That isn’t tacky at all.

I don’t think Jaguar could have done the color any better.  Only 150 were produced.

The price tag seems quite reasonable:  the seller has an auction starting at $6,000 and a BIN of $8,500.  It looks like Matrix Editions have been offered from as high as $12,500 to as low as $7,500 lately.

Here is the auction.
