BOZSBK – 2002 Ducati 998S Bostrom Edition

Ducati had hopes for a long successful WSBK career for Ben Bostrom, and rewarded his 6-win 2001 season with a splashy limited edition replica.  #133 of 155 is offered by a Miami dealer and has 5,875 miles.

2002 Ducati 998S Bostrom for sale on eBay

The Bostrom was graced with the 998S engine, the new testastretta with 104.0 mm bore and 58.8 mm stroke making way for 123 hp.  An Öhlins front fork and steering damper were added, as well as racier Brembo brakes with thinner ( lighter ) 320mm rotors.  Carbon was the major material for the bodywork, and since the Bayliss LE had scooped the race graphics, designers used Bostrom’s helmet graphics as the inspiration for the love-it-or-hate-it livery.

No information about ownership, maintenance or damage history from the Florida dealer, but they do have a pretty high-end selection, not mention a polished white floor.  Miles are low, under 6,000, and while the FBF mufflers suggest a dyno tune, it appears factory otherwise.

2001 was a singular year for Ducati WSBK, beside Boz’s 6 wins, Troy Bayliss had six, plus six 2nds to take the championship.  Beside the limited edition Bayliss and Bostrom 998’s, there were also the R’s, the Matrix, and the Final Edition.  Rarest of all might be a plain vanilla 998 !  Seriously though, loud ( graphics ) and fast for the road, the 998S Bostrom is eager to please a fan of the 916-era, pre-electronic wizardry superbikes.

Featured Listing: 2003 Ducati 998s Ben Bostrom

Update 3.9.2018: Seller indicates that this bike is SOLD! Congratulations to buyer and seller! -dc

Built to commemorate the exploits of Ben Bostrom in WSBK, Ducati commissioned 155 units of a special liveried 998s for the occasion. With a fierce splash of color to celebrated the American rider, the Bostrom edition differs little from the standard 998s in terms of mechanicals, but pulls out all the stops with visual impact. This is a bike that stands out from the crowd and makes itself known – even when quietly parked. Crank over the desmo-quattro twin, however, and you will find motive power aplenty to push you along. And that is the great thing about this bike: It is a rare collectible, yet can be ridden (and serviced) like a more conventional (read: less fragile exotic) motorcycle.

There is not much more that needs to be said about the Ducati 998s. An evolutionary example of the vaunted 916 series, this superbike was a frequent winner on the track (WSBK) as well as the showroom. The Testaretta engine with fuel injection, liquid cooling and requisite Ducati desmo valve actuation (opening the valves via cams AND closing them mechanically) makes for some great noise. Adding to the symphony is the rattle of a dry clutch. Bodywork is carbon fiber, and the excellent Brembo brakes actually use thinner rotors to cut down on unsprung and rotational weight. The chassis follows the 916 chrome-moly trellis theme, and suspension duties are ably performed by fully adjustable Ohlins units.

From the seller:
This 2003 998s is #108 of 155 produced by Ducat to celebrate Ben Bostroms superbike championship. It is essentially a 998s with a VERY patriotic paint scheme. I t has beautiful Ohlins suspension front and rear and Marchasini magnesium wheels. Some other extras on this particular bike include a full titanium Termignoni exhaust with carbon cans, a Ducati Corse ECU, some really trick NCR rear sets and a bunch of carbon accessories. The bike came to me form a collector in NJ with 2200 miles on it. I put on another 2000 and it performed flawlessly. What a great example of the icons 916 range. I just had a full service performed including belts, fluid flush, and fork seals by the Ducati specialists at ECS. When ever this bike goes out it turns heads. It is in perfect condition and will make a nice addition to any Ducati collection.

So why only 155 units? One look at the nose and tail section of the bike should tell you why. B-Boz rode with number 155, and that is exactly how many Ducati made of this limited edition (and numbered) model. Adding to the value of this particular machine is a few tasty bits: the Termi exhaust (titanium and carbon) with matching ECU upgrade and NCR adjustable rear sets. With only a few thousand miles on the clock, this bike could provide you with many, many exciting miles. Conversely, with only a few thousand miles, this bike could easily be preserved as a collector for years to come. In fact, it likely could do both!

This seller has an impressive collection of rare sport bikes that will be listed on the pages of RSBFS. You can also check out some of the amazing bikes on his website: www.superbikeuniverse.com. We have seen some of these B-Boz edition models on RSBFS over the years, and they never fail to impress. Check out this wonderful and rare Ben Bostrom Edition 2003 Ducati 998s here. This is not an eBay auction, but you’d better move fast before this Italian take on Americana is gone!

Everything has been done.

Awesome pictures and a great write-up by the seller regarding services completed and modifications made. I know that we here on RSBFS tend to prefer bikes in more of a stock condition for collector value, but you have to admire the dollars thrown at this limited edition Bostrom model – it looks absolutely sano! If you can live with the “Mr. Knievel goes to WSBK” graphics, there is little about this low-mileage, booming twin NOT to like. It appears the internet agrees with that assessment, as bidding has been pretty spirited on this bike. It is still under the reserve price, but getting closer with each wave of the virtual auction paddle. Check it out here, and then ride it like a Boz! Good Luck!

Colorful Commemorative – 2002 Ducati 998S Bostrom

Following Ben Bostrom’s very successful 2000 World SuperBike season, Ducati commissioned a boldly painted first-year 998S special edition in his honor.  Building only 155 ( his race number ) units for the USA and another 155 for Europe ensured their rarity, and using the 916-derived design and the new Testastretta engine ensured legendary performance.  Often a collector bike, a low or no-mile example occasionally sneaks out into the light – thrilling Ducatisti at the possibility and sometimes leaving them to ask why.

The ’02 998S was the final revision to the trellis-framed platform that gave us the 916 and 996, next year’s narrow-head engine adding 123 hp to the equation.  Termignoni aluminum mufflers end the stainless 2-into-2 underseat exhaust.  A good deal of carbon bodywork is used on the Bostrom, the side fairings, bellypan, front and rear fenders, airbox, chain and exhaust guards are all carbon.  Neat that the flames masked onto the side fairings expose the unpainted carbon fiber.  Of course there are Ducati norms like dry clutch ( with hydraulic control ) and outstanding brakes – the 320 mm dual front disks are 0.5 mm thinner than non-S bikes to cut unsprung weight.  Suspension is top of the line, fully adjustable Ohlins front and rear, as well as an Ohlins steering damper.

Number 45 of 155, this Bostrom was packed away after 250 miles.  An unearthed gem or a shameful waste, depending on your point of view.  No damage or modifications except for a polished exhaust system, though the owner notes headlights are clouded.  From the eBay auction:

Bike is in mint condition. Original owner and stored under a cover in a heated and cooled garage all its life. Bike has Termignoni exhaust that was put on professionally. This Ducati would be great for any Ducati enthusiast or any Ben Bostrom fan. The bike is so new it still has stickers on the mirrors. This bike deserves to be in a museum! This is a chance to own one of the best most collectable Ducatis ever made.

20151005 2002 ducati 998s bostrom tank

Bostrom was unable to continue his 2001 success in 2002 and returned to AMA SuperBike racing in 2003, making the Bostrom 998S a particularly rare special edition.  Not universally acclaimed, the splashy graphics are appreciated by those who enjoyed seeing an American rider abroad.  While I would rather the 998S returned  to its deserved spot in a museum after 50,000 or so beautiful miles, the owner does have a point.  Possibly added to your collection, or tuned up for the fall riding season, the 998S is a gem, the pinnacle of 916 development and super commemorative, for way less than it cost many years ago…

Ugliest DUC? 2002 Ducati 998 Ben Bostrom edition

bos1

Here is a 2002 Ducati 998 Bostrom replica, a bike which seems to be either a “love-it-or-hate-it” proposition for most RSBFS readers.  While the design graphics have always seemed a bit overdone, the base 998 (already a very good bike) was upgraded for the Bostrom edition with full carbon-fiber bodywork which resulted in a 24 pound weight loss over the standard 998.  The Bostrom edition also came with four-piston brembo brake calipers and upgraded suspensions consisting of Ohlins forks, shocks, and damper (instead of the original Showa’s).

The Bostrom is also a true limited edition.  A total of 310 Bostroms were built – 155 in the US and 155 in the UK.  Why 155? Because that’s the number Bostrom rode under on his 998S AMA racer.  NOTE:  Every single one was signed on the tank by Ben himself,

This particular Bostrom is located in Norcross Georgia.  The pictures show its #2 in the USA series so there is only a .6 chance of an earlier edition coming up for sale.

The seller indicates that this bike is being sold for a collector.  Condition certainly looks excellent, with a lot of upgrades and some recent service, including the following:

  • New belts
  • Fresh oil filter
  • Fresh tires(Q2’s)
  • Harris Rear sets
  • Full FBF Forza Exhaust
  • FBF Clip-ons
  • Carbon rear hugger
  • Carbon Chain-guard
  • Carbon Air ducts
  • DID 520 kit
  • Power Commander
  • Front cover and clutch sprocket
  • Stainless steel clutch springs
  • New battery
  • Books and stand included

bos5

Oh and did I mention the mileage is 2,243?

bos4

So what is this 2002 Ducati 998 Bostrom edition worth?   Well prices have come down quite a lot from the initial MSRP of $22,695.  Previous posts of these on RSBFS seem to show a value of somewhere between 10,000-13,000 USD and I expect this bike bike to go for somewhere in that range.  Personally I think that price would be more than fair for what is essentially an upgraded 998 with some nice aftermarket add-ons, very low mileage and recent service.

One final thought – you can say what you will about the Bostrom editions but they certainly are true rare sportbikes.  I cant remember the last time I saw one at bike night and the last on of these we saw here on RSBFS was back in late 2013.  I think its safe to say any prospective buyer doesn’t have to be concerned with a better deal coming along in the near future.

The Ben Bostrom replica is one of the more polarizing reps amongst our readers. The haters cite that it’s just another number plate special with questionable looking graphics, and they’re not wrong. But Bostrom fans consider it a fantastic piece of memorabilia that also happens to be Ducati 998S, a model that no one has issue with! If you find yourself in the later camp, check out this example that has covered just 5k miles. It has some upgrades but includes the stock parts to return to original.

from the seller:

I am the second owner. Bike was bought new by the first owner on 9/21/2004 and was first titled on Feb 12, 2005. It was traded in to Cycles128 in Beverly, MA in Feb 2011. I bought the bike from them while overseas and had it shipped to me in April 2011 with 4334 miles.

Current mileage is 5080 of which about 180 were put on last weekend during. As you can calculate, I have put on 746 miles in the last 2.5 years and 180 were last week. Needless to say, I did not ride this bike very much. I have a few other bikes and worked overseas a lot, so this was displayed more than ridden.

I have done some tasteful modifications to the bike, but nothing is permanent. Current mods include:

– carbon key guard, tank guard, swing arm guard, muffler guard, dash cover and air runners. It came stock with the lower tank carbon panels.

– anodized blue and red clutch parts, blue rizoma grips and bar ends, anodized levers

– carbon termi slip-ons

– rear turn signals and license plate holder

– new sprocket conversion 180 miles ago (cost $420)

– new tires 180 miles ago ($450)

– anodized blue SSR gas cap

I have all the stock parts (minus the original license plate holder) and have a brand new pair of OEM blue grips still in the box (impossible to find new ones). I also have a red Ducati stretch cover I will throw in and bike comes with the original stock blue swing arm stand. Additionally, I have the original Ben Bostrom bike cover at an ADDITIONAL COST. It is near new and took me three years to find one for sale.

Info…I tried to take close-ups of any scratches/rubs. I found 4-5 marks on the bike. Some pics are hard to see, but I took them of anything questionable. As you can see, very, very minor rubs/scratches for a 13 year old bike. The most noticeable is the one on the tail piece…smaller than pinky finger nail, but it is there. It appears to be from swinging leg over…was there when I bought the bike. I had the small clamp on the damper custom made due to the original one not working properly. I still have the original piece. I can assure you that you would be hard pressed to find another Bostrom with these miles in this shape. I would put the condition of this bike against any Bostrom with 1500 miles.

quote from the seller:

I’m selling my all-time favorite bike.

This is a 2002 Ducati 998s Ben Bostrom limited edition super bike. It is built to commemorate Ben Bostrom’s 998 and is signed by him on the gas tank with a clear coat on top. There were only 155 of these built. This is number 151.

Unlike the Troy Bayliss edition with 400 produced, the Ben Bostrom edition is much more rare and only seen in magazines or online. I’ve never seen one on the road or at exhibitions.

This bike is totally fresh with a new lithium battery, brand new tires and fluids. Belts are fresh and everything is stock except the exhaust which is a Marving Carbon. I have the original system as well. Some of the stock highlights are carbon fairings, Ohlins forks, Ohlins rear and Ohlins steering damper. Carbon chain guard and fender, carbon license plate assembly.

There is a small scrape on the back fairing that happened when I swung my foot over the back the first time.

I’ve wanted this bike for a long time and am really sorry to see it go. I guarantee the next person to own it will never feel like any bike will ever compare. These bikes are appreciating quickly so this is your rare chance to get one. I’m starting this auction for $16000 even though the bike is worth well over that. If you don’t want to draw attention to yourself, don’t buy this bike. It is far from a sleeper and absolutely flies down the road.

This is the bike that even the Ducati dealer walks out to check it out.
