Not me, silly- the CB-1! Besides I’m sitting squarely in my fif. . . I mean my mid-life crises stage and will be placing a bid on this one as soon as I finish babbling on about it.

Let’s a take a serious look at this one- shall we?





I’m still in awe of this little CB-1. I’m guessing it’s because we regularly see so many neglected machines with 500 miles look dirty AF.
I see a little oxidation on the side panels, but again, we see a lot more on than this on a regular basis. Hopefully I don’t need to remind you of the fact you’re looking at what appears* to be an un-restored 32 year old machine.


These weigh in just a touch under 400#’s, produce 56ish HP, a paltry 27 lbft of torque and utilize a single front and rear disc to keep all that power and torque in check. I know it’s a little heavy for being a small displacement motorcycle, but it wasn’t built or intended to burn up the race track. These were built for and are perfect commuter bikes with a comfy riding position.

These hit the showroom floor with a MSRP $4,299 and as you can imagine, they went over like a Led Zeppelin. Even though it didn’t make a splash back in the 90’s the little CB-1 has RSBFS.com and myself to keep it’s flickering flame alive and well.

In the last couple of years there as been an undeniable increase in demand for 80s and 90s sport bikes.  Collectors are keen to achieve childhood dreams and this era motorcycle has seen a sharp increase in pricing.  Another trend has been that the highest demand is for bikes with the lowest miles.  There have been a few notable sales of brand new, zero mile 30 and 40 year old motorcycles recently.  This 1986 Suzuki RG500 Gamma is titled in CA and shows just 800 miles.

The tree production years saw 9284 of these 500cc, two strok, twin cranked, square four cylinder machines made.  Many were raced, or just well used.  It is uncommon to find a clean example, and even less rare to find one already in the USA.  This bike also has a California title, that will certainly widen the appeal.

Factory rated at just under 100hp and rev’ing to almost 12k RPM, this was an serious performance machine in the day.  Sub 11 second quarter mile times are still fast in the automotive world today.  There were many outlets to modify these bikes, and some options could net almost 120hp.  Weight for the RG was reported to be in the 400 pound range

A near perfect fully tuned Suzuki RG500 Gamma 1986 model. Only 800 original miles and still on the original tires. Sold new in California this Canadian Spec bike spent its entire life with one owner until his passing. In a twist of fate the original importer who sold it got a phone call and bought it back. He had it fully serviced and then help it 5 years. The bike has a California title on non-op registration. Sold with a bill or sale and the pink if you so desire to register it. It came with the manuals tool kit and a full assortment or spares like a head gasket set and the stock Canadian turn signals and the rear seat. The bike currently has the euro turn signals on it. One small stain on the lower right corner of fuel tank from something leaning on it looks to be a rust stain. Commanding a $60,000 Buy It Now price, this bike is priced aggressively.  But with so few miles and preserved in stunning original condition there are no comparable bike to benchmark pricing.  This truly is a case that the seller can ask any price and hope to find a collector that wants to add one of the nicest RG500s to their garage.

Odd that the seller used pictures with arrow watermarks for the listing, and did not provide detailed images of the noted tank stain.   What can clearly be seen is that this is a very clean example and includes many extra parts and details that make this package very appealing.

Unbridled Engineering: 2017 Ducati 1299 SuperLeggera

There has never been a shortage of special Ducati to lust after.  For many years the top tier was the R models.  They represented the closest thing to a factory race bike that mere mortals could own.  These R models were limited in a way to what the racing regulations allowed, so Ducati decided to throw out the rule book and design the best bike they could with the SuperLeggera.  First introduced with the 1199 series, that bike used an extreme amount of magnesium to keep weight down.  For the 1299 Ducati went even further, everything is carbon fiber.  The wheels, the frame sections, the swing arm and of course the body work.  The result was a 215hp bike that weighed 368 pounds wet.

It goes without saying that the suspension, electronics package, brakes and general technology was the best of what Ducati had to offer at the time.  This was a technical tour de force and really unparalleled on the marked.  Ducati wanted to assert their dominance as the most exotic and desirable manufacture.

Just 500 of these machines were made for the world.  Unclear what percentage of those came to the USA.  Originally shipped with a few notable extras that included stands, a second exhaust and a few other nice treats.  None of those are pictured or mentioned in the add, an interested buyer should inquire about them with the seller.  While none would take away from the epic riding experience, they are things that are nice to have and will enhance the appeal of the package over time.

Firm on the price

The listing has a Buy It Now price of $55,000 and a comment that this is a firm number for the seller.  While this is not an insignificant amount of money, it does signal a price shift for the 1299 SuperLeggera market.  When new these bikes were in high demand and the $80,000 MSRP did not hamper sales.  This bike was also seen as the high water mark for the V Twin Ducati Superbike.  The V4 bikes are starting to become adopted by racers, and fast road riders, and as more and more of the V4 are produced, prices of even the most sought after V Twins will be pushed down slightly.  That bike that has been out of reach for a few years might just dip enough to snap up.  Would be wise to keep an eye on these, as at some point they will cross over from being a used motorcycle, and transition into a must have edition to any collections.

Like any auction, some bikes looked great, some raised a few questions, re-affirming that there’s no replacement for an actual look at what’s for sale.  The pack seemed a bit thinner than years past, still you’ll see some special and rare machines, just have to temper your bidding to accommodate a contingency or two.  A worthwhile trip and Vegas isn’t bad either.

Holy Bat Signal! 1993 Honda CBR900RR Fireblade

If you’ve been following any of the CBR-RR craziness lately, there have been a few that recently crossed the auction block on Bring A Trailer (BaT) for BIG money. Like 50 Large Grovers (as in Grover Cleveland, not Grover the Muppet) big money. Like always, these were pristine, relatively low-mileage examples of the breed. They also shared the same Red, White & Blue livery – which might make one speculate that this is THE color to have. Other completed auctions on the same site of the same bike but different livery did not fare so well. To be fair, some of those were not original, had much higher mileage and/or showed some level of damage. Today’s find, a 1993 Honda CBR900RR Fireblade is now running the gamut on the BaT site. What needs to be discovered is whether this Black/Red livery can live up to the hype brought on by the earlier sales.

30 years ago (yes, you read that right) the double R made its debut. Designed by legendary Honda Engineer Tadao Baba, the CBR900RR followed all the same recipes as the milestone performance steed that have come before: stuff the biggest motor you can into the smallest, stiffest suitable frame, drizzle liberally with hi-po components and wrap it in something sexy. Like Kawasaki did a decade earlier with the original 900 Ninja, Honda redefined the big-bore category by offering a true hyperbike with dimensions closer to a 600 than the 10000cc machines of the competition.

To say the RR was hit is an understatement. A dedicated following developed, and today these remain revered and climbing up the collector want list. Like most sequential series, the first generation models lead the way in terms of pricing. $50k seemed like a bit of an anomaly when it first happened in December. But within the same month it happened again. That was clearly an indication of direction, if not an outright trend (yet). Since that time we have not seen quite the same heights, but nor have we seen as clean an example. Today’s 1993 Honda CBR900RR sports 14,000 miles and looks relatively untouched save for the Yosh pipe.

There may be those that don’t understand the collectability of the 900RR model, but one cannot argue about the performance. These were truly cutting-edge sport bikes and demanded full rider concentration. By comparison to modern rockets this might be a bit tame, but that might just make it the perfect platform for some personalization. Personally I really like the look of this half fairing option. What do you readers think? It might be sacrilege to consider modifying such a clean, stock bike such as this, but wouldn’t that look pretty unique in a world of 90s plastic? Good Luck!!

Well H E L L! Take 2! It’s back for more, screaming with a vengeance and with a $60,000.00 B.I.N. price tag this time around.

It appears to be in the same 27 year old and untouched condition just as it was back in December. The December auction ended early and the last bid recorded was $14,000. I doubt that’s what it originally sold for, but you’re free to let the imagination run on this one.

Well, H E L L! I had this one almost ready to go, then our server decided it was time for an update. That little delay caused me to delay posting it this morning only to return to finish the post and find out the auction was pulled. I think it’s still worth a post so, here it is-


18 mile 1995 Ducati 916 For Sale on eBay

Well, well- what do we have here? Do you think Massimo would be proud to see this or shake his head in disgust? I’m going with the later because I know he painstakingly engineered the 916 to Carl Fogarty’s standards and he rode and beat on his 916 like it owed him money. Okay, cool your batteries, we all know that Massimo didn’t design it for Foggy- that was just some dumb stuff I made up. But, I know we all have some fond memories of Foggy on a 95′ 916. Right?

Ducati 916 with 18 original miles, The exterior paint, plastics, seat, exhaust, plastics are perfect (headlights are foggy but clean up). This bike needs a few hours of detailing and possibly replacement of a few small parts to be museum quality. This bike was placed into storage in a barn that was not properly conditioned and humidity affected some of the metal parts. 4 of the dzuz fasteners towards the bottom of the fairings have oxidation, Some of the bolts on the front rotor and the rotor itself have oxidation. The metal fittings on the front brake line also display oxidation. There is a small bubble on the clutch cover where the paint is peeling and another bubble hidden behind the back shock area that is difficult to photo. There was a very, very small spot on one of the wheels that I cannot find again but I know it’s there somewhere because I noticed when I bought the bike. All of the electronics, engine, transmission work properly and I have video of the bike running. This bike is part of my collection which I am starting to sell.


I think this image tells the story of this low mileage 918 916- It shows how it was improperly stored and it shows that it is a real deal 18 mile machine.
Like some, but not all RSBFS.com readers, I find low mileage machines, of any age, very intriguing. I think I find them intriguing because they make me wonder “why?”. In this case, I ask “Why did someone mothball a second year base model 916?”. The naysayers will scream “It’s a base model and doesn’t belong on your site!”. My threshold is simple- Can I find another one? Therefore, I clap back with a resounding “NO!”.

I hate buying and selling because the internet is full of idiots. I have tried to give the best possible description of the bike. Again, it is not perfect but with very minimal effort it will be.

Preach it Brother!

I intentionally sat on this one for a few days because I wanted to see how much action and price it would command. It currently sits at $14,000 with 8 bids placed and the reserve firmly in place.
What’s it going to take?

I know it’s a dead horse and I’m sure you folks are tired of reading it, but PICTURES! PICTURES! PICTURES! If the paint is perfect- show it! If the wheels are perfect- SHOW IT! I suspect this machine would attract a few more dollars with a proper detail and photos.

Florida Orange – 1979 Laverda Jota 1000

Air cooled early superbikes are becoming rarer by the minute, especially built in Italy and tarted up in England. Today’s Jota has an owner or two’s worth of miles but apparently was restored at some point and still looks great.

Laverda had been making motorbikes since 1949, and their 750 twin was a great success, especially in endurance racing.  As new competition from Japan was arriving, the company created a 980cc triple, with double overhead cams and 32mm Dell’Orto carburetors.  English importer Slater Bros. saw more potential and commissioned higher lift cams and 10-to-1 pistons resulting in a whopping 90 hp.  A strong steel backbone accompanied the light-looking downtubes, making for a solid foundation for the usual Ceriani suspension units.  Handlebars are adjustable but not too much higher, due to the 140 mph speeds expected.

Presented by a Miami dealer, this Laverda looks like a survivor that had some quality restoration work.  Some light corrosion has crept in since then, but a quick clean-up should do wonders.  Though most ( and this one ) have been converted, Jota’s originally came with left brake and right shifter.  Paint work is excellent and includes a full fairing which apparently has never been mounted.  Comments from the eBay auction:

A beautiful specimen immaculately maintained and cared for by its second owner for the last 32 years. This is a rare Slater Brothers 180 degree crank and the the 7th bike imported into the states. It was purchased in 1990 in San Diego from a retired US Navy officer who bought it new while stationed in Europe in 1979.  Slater Bros. in Tacoma Washington informed him that they had imported 6 Jota’s in ’79 and that this was the seventh they knew of. 

The bike was immediately taken to Lance Weil in Burbank California who was the undisputed Laverda guru And who went through the bike from ground up and restored it. Lance rated the motor at over 90hp then and it has covered small mileage since. Runs Now as it did then. The sound of these is unique and memorable to all who have heard it.  These hardly ever come up for sale. Don’t miss this opportunity.
 
A “no stories” bike, this is one of the top collector bikes out there and the fastest of its time. Comes with super rare full fairing which looks amazing fitted. A few spares and another set of matte black silencers. The right brake set is not original but is fitted for better performance and safety. The original one comes with the bike. The back brake is spongy right now and might need slight attention. Books and manual too. 
 
 
The Jota got glowing reviews for power and handling, but the overall build quality vs. the premium price took some lumps.  Either way the factory was positioned more as a boutique than volume manufacturer.  At this level of ask, some further contact with the seller might be in order, not to mention verifying the advertised running condition.  Could be ready for concours season if it checks out.

Track Bike Tuesday: Special Framed Harris Single Cylinder

Any casual reader of RSBFS will know that must of us here are always very excited to see a special framed bike.  There is just something about the pure focus of them that stirs the emotions.  Many will be aware of Rickman, Egli, Bimota and maybe even Seeley.  Those of you over in the UK will undoubtable know of Spondon and Harris.  Here in the USA these British framed bikes are much less common, and that makes this Yamaha SRX powered Harris even more appealing.

This bike offers and amazing package for someone that is looking for something out of the ordinary to enjoy on track.  The Yamaha engine will offer low service costs and plenty of power.  There is still plenty of support for this engine, and Wiseco makes affordable pistons.  The less is more ethos means there are less components to wear, or need replacing over time, thus leaving more funds left over for track fees and slicks.  Seller states that much of the suspension is TZ250 so spares are available.  A factory service manual should help the new owner learn the ins and outs of the engine, another plus of having a race bike with a special frame, but standard based engine.

In 1993 and 1994, Harris Yamaha’s (SRX engine) won the British Singles Championship (Steve Ruth 1993; Dave Rawlins 1994). 1994, Jim Moodie won the inaugural Single Cylinder TT on a Harris SRX.  This Harris SRX is frame No. HPF1206.  I’ve owned and raced it, occaisionally, in AHRMA (SOS2), AMA (Mid-Ohio) and WERA (Clubman) since 2007. The frame, wheels, suspension (Ohlins shock) and brakes are TZ250 spec. The engine is built with +1 mm Arias 10.5:1 pistons, Megacycle cam, valves and springs, and oil cooler. Twin Mikuni flat slide carbs. 54 RWHP on MSP Cycle dyno.  It weighs nothing, has God’s own brakes, handles like a GP bike, is sized like a GP bike (it does not fit me at 6′-2″ and 200 lbs, and arthritis and multiple crashes no longer allow me to fold myself into the bike). It is a FUN bike to race.  The bike comes with gearing and some spares (footpegs, levers, clip-ons, brake pads, fork seals, belly pan for use without fairing) and the side stand shown.

As with many of these types of bikes, pricing is difficult at best.  The $8k asking price feels inline with other options in the class.  With the rise in prices of 90s street bikes one would be unlikely to be able to track a stock framed bike for much less.  The only optional downside is that these GP style bikes normally demand a jockey sized rider.  There are ways people have adjusted foot and hand controls to accommodate a full sized rider though.
