Shiny Side Up – 2003 Honda RVT1000R / RC51

Honda built the RC51 to access the displacement advantage afforded two cylinder Superbikes in the FIM World Championship, and Colin Edwards went right out and snapped it up. Here’s a lightly ridden and slightly tarted up SP2 from the mid-Atlantic area.

Honda’s L-twin packed a real punch with 136hp, thanks to 10.8-to-1 compression and two fuel injectors looking down each 62mm intake.  Cooling air had an easier time getting to the engine bay since the water radiators were side-mounted, this also sent heated air out of the fairing.  HRC had a lot of design input on the twin spar alloy frame,  adjustable cartridge forks and Pro-Link monoshock.  Wheels and brakes are Honda’s own, 320mm front disks and light-looking 5-spoke alloys.  Form follows function on the bodywork, with room sculpted into the fuel tank for knees and bars, and the pillion all but forgotten.

This owner likes things clean, with not a mark on this RC51.  Almost got out of hand with the polishing, but the chainguard and heel guards are easily returned to stock , not so sure those are the factory wheels though.  No list is provided, but evident are a two-into-one exhaust, Corbin seat, adjustable levers, tinted Zero Gravity windscreen, new tires, low profile front turn signals, and rear turn signals in the tail light.  Just a comment or two from the eBay auction:

The bike has 9,317 miles on it. Runs strong with no problems.

RC51 has stock sprockets, heavy duty chain.  Also has a two into one exhaust pipe.

Hard to notice – Small crack in the plastic just under the seat on the right side.

While Honda won their first season with the RC51, Ducati answered with a new testastretta engine for the 996R in 2001, though it took the entire season for Troy Bayliss to clinch the championship.  Honda responded with the SP2 for 2002 and won nine out of the last ten races ( five events ) for the roses.  Honda sent their factory race yen in another direction for 2003, and returned to a four-cylinder, even though the RC51 stayed in production until 2006.  Some of these mods might not be to every fan’s liking, but the year, low miles and outstanding condition might make this bike worth looking into.

New Lease on Life: 1991 Suzuki RGV250 VJ22

The Suzuki RGV250 Gamma was a significant model for the factory at Hamamatsu. Original conceived as a parallel twin, the RG evolved into the 90 degree v-twin for the VJ21 and VJ22 models before morphing into the 70 degree vee of the VJ23. A favorite of racers, street riders and collectors alike, the RGV250 spawned the successful Aprilia RS250 as well as several Suzuki-specific themed liveries. Of the rare graphical packages, the Pepsi was perhaps the most rare, but the Lucky Strike livery continues to be the most popular. Today’s 1991 RGV250 VJ22 does not appear to have started life as a Lucky Strike, but looks striking after a much needed refurb (despite the lower resolution photos).

Putting aside the sordid history that might have brought this bike down the road it traveled, the resto-mod approach with this particular example really works for me. This bike certainly looks a sight better than when the seller first acquired it, and there is no denying the visual impact of the Lucky Strike scheme. In addition to paintwork this bike has received some much needed attention to the chassis and systems, and now sports some important upgrades including suspension, exhaust and the all-important tuning to de-restrict the colony of bees and transform it into a hive of angry hornets. Figure 60+ HP from a stocker with the restrictions removed, and likely a tad more here if all components are working correctly together. Should be fun on a barely 300 lbs (dry) machine.

This bike is listed as “Excellent condition, as new, showroom condition” – although it might be fair to list it more along the lines of a restoration. And we should all be thankful someone is willing to undertake such a labor of love, as the world needs more of these bikes rescued and returned to glory. Not much action on this particular auction yet; opening bid is $5k USD with a reserve in place. There are a fair number of watchers on this, so perhaps everyone is sitting back and waiting for the fun to start. Check out all of the details here. Digital Effect – 1999 Ducati 900SS/CR

1999 was the first year for Pierre Terblanche’s re-style of the venerable Supersport, which despite a comprehensive set of upgrades, polarized prospective fans.  This Minne example looks excellent and surprisingly as-delivered.

Ducati’s dual-spark 900 was all new, and though the 80 hp was just alright, the spot-on Marelli fuel injection and two plugs per cylinder provided excellent usable power in a wide band.  The charging system was updated, and the air-cooled engine loved the upper-only fairing.  Nicer components with USD Showa forks and adjustable monoshock, and Brembo P4 brakes with four piston calipers.  The gold trellis frame states its case from behind the fairing that, love it or hate it, is designed by one of the best.

Evidently presented by a recovering bike nut, this CR looks excellent with just middling miles at 11,967.  A pair of Giannelli silencers is included, not sure why they were un-mounted.  Two spots of paint damage are shown in detail, but can’t be detected in a wider shot.  The owner posted a cold start – video – and has this to say in the eBay auction:

Amazing original and all stock condition. The bike starts right up with its strong battery, and it pulls strong and clean through the rev range. Shifts are solid and smooth. There are 2 minor cosmetic blemishes that occurred during transport, and the 2 areas are clearing pointed out in 2 of the photos. 1999 introduced fuel injection to the Supersport range of bikes, and this example is the rare half-faired CR model. The bike comes with the set of Giannelli slip-on high mount exhaust that were on the bike when I purchased it. The original exhaust were included in the sale, so I put them on the bike. Bike received full Desmo service 2 years and 1000 miles ago. 4 months ago, a new fuel pump, fuel line and filter installed along with fresh oil and filter.

The new Supersport could’ve been a game changer but the styling changed more minds than the engineering, and the model took the down escalator.  Along the way the powertrain was upped to 800 and 1000cc dual sparks, both also quite rare – but the 900 is a classic Supersport displacement.  No bids yet, but even at the buy-it-now this one will provide the new owner a lot of sport for the money.

Featured Listing: 1996 Yamaha YZF600R for Sale

If you grew up reading about, riding, or lusting after 80s and 90s Japanese sportbikes, the good news is that these machines are finally getting their due from collectors. The bad news is that there aren’t many nice, low-mile examples out there anymore, and prices are no longer what they were. Luckily, today’s Featured Listing is probably one of the cleanest, low-mile Yamaha YZF600Rs left in existence. 

The YZF600R, also known as the “Thundercat” in some markets, was introduced in 1994. It was an evolution of the steel Deltabox-framed FZR600 and shared that bike’s overall shape until a redesign in 1996 brought the styling into line with the bigger YZF1000 “Thunderace.” It was more of an all-rounder than some of its period competition, but it was still considered a highly-competent sportbike, just one that was more suited to street use than other, more highly-strung options. Like Yamaha’s own R6 for example. The YZF was available in some markets until 2007, sold alongside the R6 as a more practical alternative to that very track-focused machine.

The YZF600R followed the typical format for the class at the time, with the aforementioned steel Deltabox frame that added weight, compared to aluminum versions, but kept costs under control. The complete package weighed in at 453lbs wet and the bike’s 87 rwhp could push the bike to more than 150mph. Adjustable suspension at both ends was on the soft side, but handling was good enough for the track when properly adjusted, and the package was good enough to win an AMA Supersport championship in 1996.

This is listed as a 1996 model, so I’m assuming it was produced before the changeover to the later styling that replaced the “cat-eye” design seen here for a single-headlight. All things considered, this is an extremely clean and original example, with less than 1,700 miles showing on the odometer. Note that there are a few cracks and minor blemishes to be found, but these are clearly documented in the huge gallery of images below.

With only 1,700 original miles and a striking maroon and dark magenta cocktail color combination, this fox-eye YZF has been in storage since 1999. It was recently brought back to life by cleaning the carbs, scrubbing the bike from top to bottom, oiling the cylinders, flushing the brakes, changing the oil, installing a fresh AGM battery, replacing the ignition, installing a new fuel pump and repairing a few minor fairing cracks (likely from damage during storage). The bike is clean and ready to ride with a clear Minnesota title.

The bike is all original except for an aftermarket ignition switch and in-tank fuel pump. The tires (old but intact), exhaust, windscreen, rear seat cowl, owner’s manual and even the reflectors everyone tore off are on it. The plastics are nice, but not perfect, with a few minor cracks. The same thing applies to the overall condition of the bike. The bike shows no signs of ever having been down.

The YZF is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota and can be picked up or shipped from there.

The seller is asking $4,000 for this very classy, low-mile machine. You could probably find a cheaper YZF600R, but this is probably the nicest one you’re likely to find anytime soon. The only possible downside is that this example is slathered in very classy burgundy paint, not some lurid and evocative period race-replica scheme. Like Honda’s CBR600 F3, they made plenty of these, and they were never all that rare or valuable. But if you want to relive your youth in style, this one can’t really be beat. Just fit some fresh rubber and enjoy!

Out of Towner – 1986 Yamaha RZ350

Since the RZ350 was sold here until 1986, it’s relatively rare to see the fully faired rest-of-world edition.  Though this example isn’t currently operational, it shouldn’t take much to bring it back to the living – not to mention California title !

For 1986, the RZ350 used Yamaha’s 347cc parallel twin with their electrically controlled power valve, and revised porting and combustion chamber helped make 59 hp at 9,000 rpm.  The lightweight rode on 18-inch alloys with air-adjustable forks and monocross rear.  A perimeter chassis and swingarm were executed in steel tubing, with triple disk brakes.  The full fairing was new for 1985, but 1986 saw a revised tail fairing which perhaps looked sportier in its simplicity.

Not seeming to be a dealer, this owner invites inspection at their home.  The RZ shows very well, with 14,403 km’s or a hair under 9,000 miles.  Finishes and plating indicate inside storage.  Nicks and dings keep it from being a real show bike but once it’s back on the road, it would be a smashing rider or riding resto.  Comments from the eBay auction:

The bike is the full fairing Canadian model that was imported here in the US and it comes with a clean CA title and non-op registration.  The motorcycle is in excellent condition and has approximately 14K Kilometers which is equivalent to just under 9K miles. As shown in the photos, the bike is in excellent cosmetic condition with only minor blemishes to the paint as shown in the last photo. 

The bike has been stored and was drained of fluids, so it will need a light service to get running including but not limited to a new battery, fresh fluids, and possibly a carb cleaning.  The motor kicks over with great compression, the throttle turns, clutch and brakes are working, inside of gas tank is clean, electrical is working, etc. so it should not take very much to bring the bike back onto the road. 

For anyone considering this bike as a collectors item or investment, the bike is a numbers matching (Vin to Engine) vintage motorcycle in mostly all original factory condition, this bike has not been restored but rather it has been on display and preserved for most of its life.

Can’t pretend to understand the RD / RZ / LC confusion, but the actual bike has made more incremental changes over the years and across continental divides.  Meanwhile the two stroke Yamaha fun factor is un-parallelled.  Bidding seems serious in this auction, with more than three days yet to run.  The new owner will have a distinctive RZ350, and will get a chance to know it better during the re-commissioning.

After the flak generated by the controversial 999, the Sport Classic line was a definite win for motorcycle designer Pierre Terblanche, and the bikes effectively combined modern technology with vintage design cues. But although the performance wasn’t up to the standards set by the very best sportbikes of the period, the Sport Classics weren’t aimed at that market. First and foremost, they were meant to look good. And the Paul Smart 1000LE, as seen in today’s Featured Listing, definitely did that, with a blue-green frame and silver bodywork to evoke Ducati’s first v-twin racebikes, one of which won Imola in 1972 with the eponymous Paul Smart at the controls.

But although the Paul Smart looks like it’d be best for posing, it’s almost as if Ducati couldn’t help themselves, and this stylish machine has the handling goods to run with the best. Pricey Öhlins bits adorn both ends, and the traditional trellis frame is wrapped around their proven two-valve, air-cooled Desmo twin, here with two plugs per cylinder in their “Dual Spark” configuration, since apparently Alfa Romeo already trademarked “Twin Spark…” Twin plug heads are especially useful for a v-twin like this, since the two plugs allow more even combustion across the surface of the large pistons.

The quoted output is underwhelming on paper, but the flexible, torque-rich powerband is the perfect choice for a road bike. And keep in mind, the 92hp may have been modest, even by the long, long ago standards of 2006, but the bike is a development of the classic, race-bred Pantah engine that predated the four-valve Desmoquattro. It’s fun, tunable, and surprisingly reliable when properly cared for. Modest power aside, there were some other concessions to style: the spoked wheels aren’t as light as cast or forged items would be, even though they look plenty evocative, and the Phantom tires were designed specifically by Pirelli to complete the classic look with that very vintage tread design. They’re supposedly reasonably competent tires, but you can find stickier rubber for much cheaper.

Of course, the owner of this Featured Listing isn’t worried about tire choice. Or oil or gas. Or even registration. This immaculate machine has turned only three miles since new, making it a time-capsule example of a modern classic Ducati, like an insect perfectly preserved in amber.

Smart’s famous victory in the 1972 Imola 200 riding what would become the 750SS was instrumental in establishing Ducati as a high-performance brand for the modern era. So what better way to celebrate the Bologna marque’s heritage than a limited edition model in the spirit of the iconic, bevel-drive, ‘green frame’ 750SS? And why not duplicate the rest of the original bevel-drive twins line up while you’re about it? That was Ducati’s reasoning behind the launch of its new ‘Sport Classic’ range in 2005. However, none of the three models Paul Smart 1000 LE, Sport 1000 and GT1000 – is in any way a ‘replica’; all are thoroughly modern motorcycles with only the styling and color scheme(s) acknowledging the past. 

The Paul Smart 1000 LE uses the belt drive, desmo, air-cooled, fuel injected, electronic ignition 1000DS (dual spark) 90-degree v-twin engine 992cc, two-valves, a quoted 92bhp at 8,000rpm and enough torque to surprise its four-valve superbike brethren – as found in a number of other Ducatis. All this modern technology is housed in the Italian firm’s trademark trellis frame in a striking shade of ‘green frame’ green – the latter complemented by some top-quality Öhlins suspension, Brembo brakes, a wet clutch, a six-speed gearbox, a curvaceous two pipe exhaust on the right side in black, and wire-spoke wheels beneath a swoopy silver half-fairing and tail hump. ‘After 20 miles I was totally sold on the bike, as I had been after five minutes of looking at it. Exclusivity, style, power, handling… what else could I want?’ queried Bike magazine’s tester at the PS 1000 LE’s launch. A production run of only 2,000 units was planned and few motorcycles of modern times have become as instantly collectible.

As the seller mentions: the entire first run of Sport Classics became instantly collectible, and all of them command shocking prices on the used market, especially when you compare them to Ducati’s 1098 of the same era, a bike that offers far more performance. But obviously, the nods to Ducati’s racing history struck a chord, and values remain high. The asking price for this showroom-quality example? $39,000. There’s obviously not much of a service history to discuss. In fact, there isn’t any service history at all, since the bike has never turned a wheel in anger. This bike is pretty much bone-stock, excepting the lower fairing. The original bike had a half-fairing that matched Ducati’s production 750SS, but the full-fairing was a popular modification and suits the lines of the bike, although it does seem a bit of a shame to cover up that classic, air-cooled engine.

Righteous: 2005 Ducati 749R

The Ducati 749/999 series is often seen as the red-headed step child of the Italian world. Following the mega-successful Massimo Tamburini design of the 916/996/998 family, designer Pierre Terblanche was to pen the follow-on act. With big shoes to fill and great expectations to achieve, Terblanche offered the world the stunning – if not the somewhat acutely ugly – 999 and 749. With sharper, more angular lines than the more flowing 916 DNA, the 999 & 749 were characterized by a stacked headlight arrangement that did little to pacify the religious zealots of the early design. Judged solely by the cover, this was a book not worth reading.

Lo and behold, the 999 and 749 series today offers a stunning departure from the “me too” look of the wide-eyed, high tail repli-racers from any number of manufacturers. And time has been very kind to the overall design, making this bike look even better today than when it was introduced. This is *especially* true in person; the pictures fail to do justice to the myriad details that festoon these machines. And while earlier series bikes were quasi torture racks, the 749/999 brothers were multi-adjustable and downright comfortable – in addition to being very, very fast. Today’s 2005 Ducati 749R is being sold by an enthusiast (after all, it has fewer than 800 miles on the clock!), and I will let him pick up the story on this amazing machine.

If not familiar with the 749R, this was Ducati’s upgraded performance version of the base 749 model. This particular 749R is 774 miles from new!!! Ducati 749R upgrades included titanium connecting rods, magnesium alloy valve covers, a shorter stroke, increased bore, larger valves, super lightweight crankshaft, high strength aluminum alloy pistons and remapped fuel injection all which allowed the 749R to produce more power and torque at higher RPM.

The stock 749 was rated at 108HP, while the 749R was rated at 121HP in 2005.

Other features include carbon fiber covers designed for better cooling, larger fuel tank and slipper clutch standard! The chassis has an adjustable steering head and stated over 20mm of longitudinal adjustment of the seat to tank distance. The suspension featured the latest model of the Ohlins front forks and Ohlin rear shock available at the time. Finishing things off Ducati added an Ohlin steering damper.

All of this added up to a precise, nimble and very well handling Ducati! This bike is number 74 of at least 500 produced to meet FIM homologation regulations. A suggested retail price at the time of $21,995 made the 749R unobtainable for most.

Ride it, put it in a collection, you decide!!

The world was not necessarily ready for the polarizing looks of the 749 and 999. Neither, it would appear, was the WSBK competition; the 999R won championships in 2003 (Hodgson), 2004 (Toleand) and 2006 (Bayliss). Such was the performance of this new platform in competition. The 749R – while a baby brother to the literbike – was no slouch itself. While down on capacity and therefore HP from the bigger bike, the 749 enjoyed the same chassis dynamics but added lightness to the equation. In environments where outright horsepower did not rule, the 749 could hold its own and then some due to an extremely stable chassis, fantastic brakes, Ohlins suspension, and a comfortable (and configurable) cockpit.

The seller correctly states that these R bikes were near unobtanium when new due to the high price and the relative scarcity. Today they remain rare. Thankfully most of the Terblanche-era bikes we see have been well maintained, and this one is no exception. In fact, I believe it raises the bar a bit. Stored indoors as per the photographs, this bike has very few miles and looks to be ready to offer a “choose your own adventure” scenario for the next owner. With a $14k opening ask the starting line to this auction is not outrageous, but there have been no bidders as of yet. There are several days to go, so click, drool and decide if you need this carbon fiber wonder to fill that hole in your garage or man cave. Righteous: 2005 Ducati 749R

Express Ticket: 1993 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-11D for Sale

I’m sure you all must be exhausted by the never ending stream of exotic Italian confections that have assaulted your senses this week. Rich, high-calorie recipes that include a bit too much of all the things that make motorcycles great. As a palate cleanser, I’d like to offer this very clean, very handsome, very appropriately painted, and very fast Kawasaki ZX-11.

Kawasaki’s entry into the 1990’s Horsepower Wars was introduced in 1990 and produced until 2001, when it was superseded by the reskinned and stroked ZZ-R1200. Power naturally came from a big inline four that displaced 1052cc and was connected to a six-speed gearbox. Aided by one of the very first functional production ram-air systems, the big four produced 150 crankshaft horses, enough to push the bike to a top speed of over 175mph.

Handling was neutral and very stable, exactly what you’d want from a bike this powerful. But although it was fast, the ZX-11 was no track bike: it was designed as a roadbike, with very reasonable ergonomics that made it far more of a gran tourismo, as the sleek, mature looks and lack of the period’s famously garish graphics suggest. The near 600lb wet weight helped provide stability at speed and pummeled road imperfections into submission.

100% OEM Condition… 1993 Kawasaki Ninja ZX11 D-1 in a very desirable Candleberry Wine Red with only 27,800 miles that comes out to 989 miles a year. This bike could easily qualify as a survivor (Pride in Ownership shows). Overall paint is in great condition. Exhaust and ECU are stock. Exhaust cans are very clean. Starts and runs good! Everything works as it should. No leaks, no smoke, no overheating. Plenty of tread on the tires. Decals and emblems are all original. Adult owned and cared for its entire life.

Original tool kit is under the seat. This is a very clean example and as the time progresses these are harder to come by in such great shape. As a matter of fact I’ve only ever come across a couple that were even close to this condition in years past. 

You will be very hard pressed to find one let alone in this condition. Free and clear title in hand. Bike has never been laid down or crashed. I purchased the bike from the original owner who was well into his late 70s. Hate to see it go. Price is firm. No rust whatsoever and garage kept.

Condition of this Candleberry Wine Red example appears excellent, although miles aren’t especially low. But it’s not surprising that the previous two owners racked up some miles, considering the ZX-11’sraison d’etre: ballistic mile-munching performance. I genuinely think these are very cool and, when prices were at their nadir, entertained fantasies of finding a clean example and fitting a set of soft luggage so I could blast up and down the West Coast. I’ve seen lower-mileage examples for less than this one’s $4,200 asking price in years past, but I have a feeling this will look like a very good deal in just a couple years’ time… Snap bargains up while you can still find them.
