Update 8.24.2017: Seller has notified us that this bike is sold. Congratulations to buyer and seller! -dc

Some bikes take years to become collectible: 1980s GSX-Rs could be had for basically peanuts up until very recently, when sportbike fans realized that very few nice examples of these iconic machines were left. But these were made as recently as 2009 and, after a brief period of time where they sat unsold on showroom floors, the Ducati SportClassics began to rapidly appreciate. In fact, it almost seemed like all it took for values to take off was for Ducati to discontinue the line... Is the custom work and low-mileage condition of today's Featured Listing Sport 1000S worth what the seller is asking? Time will tell, but there's no doubt that this show-winning machine is one of the nicest examples out there.

Whether you chose the Paul Smart, Sport 1000, or GT1000 SportClassics all got the same drivetrain: Ducati's well-developed air and oil-cooled 1000DS engine with twin plugs and a claimed 92hp. It was the perfect package for the mature sportbikers Ducati was targeting, and the SportClassics clearly had one eye on the future and one on the past. This bike is actually the Sport 1000S that took the Paul Smart's place in the SportClassic lineup once that limited edition machine ceased production. The Paul Smart was a monoposto, a result of the unusual tubular swingarm that had its monoshock offset on the left side, but the Sport 1000S used an even more retro dual-shock setup that allowed you to take a passenger. Unless of course you decided to replace the stock exhaust with a full titanium system from Zard...

If you're a fan of originality, this particular Sport 1000S might not be your bag, but the paintwork is appropriately evocative and the classic Ducati logo looks great on the tank. The original half-faired bodywork suggests bikes like the classic 750SS, but I love the way that titanium header pipe passes through the fairing lowers on this setup. Certainly the upgraded front and rear Öhlins suspension components should provide impressive handling if you decide to risk your investment on a racetrack or winding back road.

The seller is asking $27,500 for this machine, which is obviously big money for a SportClassic that isn't a Paul Smart. But values for all the SportClassics have been rising steadily since they were discontinued, and if you're looking for one with low mileage to add to your collection, it's hard to beat this example: it has just 1,500 miles from new and has been upgraded with a laundry list of quality aftermarket parts. Obviously, it's not completely original, which may deter some collectors, but it appears that the modifications can be reversed if you prefer. Worked – 2007 Ducati Sport 1000 Biposto

Ducati SportClassics were made from 2006-2010, and with their cafe-racer looks, were very popular with customizers.  The dual-spark 992cc engine was fuel injected, and its reliability lent itself more to breathing upgrades than internal work.  This example has had intake and exhaust work and some well-executed cosmetic upgrades.

2007 Ducati Sport 1000 Biposto for sale on eBay

Designer Pierre Terblanche got started with the wild-retro MH900E, and completed the thought with the SportClassic line.  Pretty good power from the air-cooled desmodue at 92hp, with stable handling and moderate weight.  Dual shocks and dry clutch make reference to the good old days.  Bars are apparently clip-ons, but have risers and some adjustment to ease the pain.  The seat is the best of both worlds, a dual seat with color coordinated cafe cover.

No word on how many owners, but this Sport has been treated well and shows just one spot of clearcoat failure for its 7,500 miles.  The current owner is an Arrow fan and put on 2-into-1 exhaust and had it altered to work with the passenger pegs.  Velocity stacks and ECU reprogramming complete the respiratory therapy.

Not often seen at this level are the fender-ectomy and SpeedyMoto open cam belts ( with guards ).  Can't say the license plate mount is my taste but there a lot of nice smaller upgrades.  From the eBay auction:

• Pazzo adjustable brake and clutch levers
• Kuan steering damper mount with Ohlins damper
• Rear fender removed
• Taillight flipped and mounted under the seat pan (turn signals reversed to accommodate flip)
• Custom license plate mount with factory license plate light
• STM clutch slave
• Custom Arrow 2 1 stainless steel race full exhaust (not a slip on) I fell in love with Arrow exhaust when I put a system on my Monster. The sound is second to none and this exhaust does not disappoint. The reason it is custom is that Arrow never made a system to fit a biposto bike; it was only intended to fit the 2006 mono. I purchased one and worked with a local exhaust shop to modify it just enough so that it would clear the brake pedal and rear set.

• Speedy Moto frame sliders
• Speedy Moto Leggero belt pulley covers
• Corse Dynamics high performance intake system (includes velocity stacks, air filters, crankcase breather, etc.)
• MW Tuning / REXXER ecu reflash to accommodate intake and exhaust mods. O2 sensor delete.
• Billet high capacity ECU heat sink
• Corse Dynamics magnetic oil drain plug
• Lane splitter style round barend rear view mirror
• RAM Mount triple clamp mounted ball for accessory mounts (phone/gps/etc.)

Light on the miles and looking great, this SportClassic has a steep buy-it-now but the right equipment and up-to-date maintenance.  The Make Offer button is there if this classic red machine speaks to you.  As the wintry mix fades this might be a good opportunity...

On the Dotted Line – 2007 Ducati PS1000LE Paul Smart

One could say that the vintage craze has crested, but the ground-breaking Ducati SportClassics are still more popular than when they were introduced. The Paul Smart commemorative is the pick of the litter and this signed example is spotless with low miles and recent maintenance.

2007 Ducati PS1000LE Paul Smart for sale on eBay

Using the now-classic DS1000 air-cooled engine, the Ducati SportClassic foretold the retro market that followed shortly.  The fuel-injected L-twin was good for 92 pretty reliable horsepower.  The Paul Smart wears the blue-green frame and silver fairing of the original 1974 Super Sport 750, and this one has the desirable fairing lowers.  Mechanically, the PS is pure oughties, with adjustable Ohlins and 320mm Brembo front brakes.  The monoposto seat keeps the rider focused on the task at hand.

Holed up for the winter in Boise, this LE is super-sharp with only 1250 miles.  Upgrades include Termignoni exhaust and LED brake and front signal lights.  Planning for the worst case, it comes with a spare fuel tank in case of swelling.  Again thinking ahead, the seat fairing was clear-coated after being signed by Paul Smart.  From the eBay auction:

-One-Off LED fleda brake light.
-Flush mount blinkers
-Paul Smart's Signature. (I have a photo of him signing the cowling).
-The cowling was signed with a paint pen and then was professionally cleared coated.
-Termignoni full exhaust and ECU. Dealer installed.
-Lower #16 fairings.
-I have ALL the stock parts including the exhaust and ECU to put this back to its factory original setting.

For the rider, the flexible DS1000 powertrain and adjustable suspension are reigned in by the low clip-ons and monoposto seat.  Likely a little too nice to ride much, this PS1000LE seems destined for a collection.  It has a little of everything - reference to racing heritage, great retro colors, modern ( but vintage looking  ) mechanicals, and a brilliant design by Pierre Terblanche perfectly executed by the factory.  Hoping the reserve isn't too far over the horizon...

Paul Smart Stunt Double – 2006 Ducati Sport 1000

With Ducati Paul Smart commemoratives fetching $25K-ish, this owner has created a similarly configured bike with lot of nicer  components, distinguishable from the original only by the not-blue frame and the Mediterranean cruise you can take with the price difference.

Designed by Pierre Terblanche in the early 2000's, the SportClassic line-up used the 992cc air-cooled dual spark engine, and had 93 hp available.  The chro-moly trellis works around the vertical cylinder and back towards the integrated seat subframe.  All systems are available for view, and on this bike have been done up nicely.  Forks by Marzocchi and Sachs monoshock have given way to Öhlins both ends.  Brakes are still unbeatable 4-puck Brembo fronts with 320mm rotors, followed by 245mm rear.  A factory Sport 1000 fairing has been added to the monoposto seat and all the bodywork painted an understated dark silver.

Presented by a San Diego dealer, there are a lot of nice touches on this one.  Those peek-a-boo Rizoma cam belt covers lead the charge, but there is a matching clutch cover, Arrow exhaust system, Acculign adjustable rearsets, and some niceties in the intake stream but out of view.  Here's a short list from the eBay auction:

This is a 1 Owner bike.  Bike is very clean and has been built with the best parts possible.  Looks like a Paul Smart but is not a Paul Smart.  Just as good with the upgraded Ohlins and striking paint.

SportClassics can be a bit of a labor of love, since everything is visible, it's nice if it looks good.  For its nearly 12,000 miles, this machine looks ready for a serious show.  Comfy-looking grips might push the odometer a little farther than the low bars and solo seat would indicate.  When you do arrive,  you'll have a singular ride, all of the best attributes of a Paul Smart, and improved in many ways...

A Smart Buy? 2006 Ducati Paul Smart 1000LE for Sale

2006 Ducati PS R Side Front

Ducati's SportClassic line made a big splash when it was introduced in 2005 and included today's Paul Smart 1000LE. Powered by Ducati’s torque-rich L-twin with modern suspension at both ends, they were mature sportbikes for riders with a sense of history, an eye for design, and an appreciation for accessible performance. Many will complain about how “underpowered” they are, with just 92hp from the twin-plug, air-cooled twin, but there’s plenty of performance for most road-riders and the relative light weight and top-shelf suspension mean you can exploit every available horse.

2006 Ducati PS L Side
The style was never really in question though. Pierre Terblanche may have caught some serious flack for his superbike restyle, it’s pretty obvious he knew what he was doing when he designed these. Unfortunately, although demand was high at first for the SportClassic line, interest tapered off fairly quickly and only the conservatively-styled GT1000 soldiered on until 2010.

2006 Ducati PS Rear Suspension

Interestingly, that low initial demand quickly turned into high collectability, especially for the half-faired Paul Smart 1000LE that was low-production to begin with. Designed to evoke the bike ridden by Paul Smart to an unlikely win at Imola in 1972, the bike featured silver, half-faired bodywork and a blue-green painted frame. Rear suspension was unusual and looked like a classic dual-shock setup at the rear, but only from the left-hand side. It’s an asymmetric monoshock, and one of my favorite features of the bike.

2006 Ducati PS R Rear
This example appears to be fitted with a set of the correct Pirelli Phantoms that were designed for this bike to offer modern performance and classic looks that mirror the bikes themselves. It also features a set of accessory fairing lowers that strengthen the Imola-bike-connection but to me detract from the looks. I prefer the half-fairing that resembles the road-going 750SS and, if it were my money, I'd be holding out for a bike with the funky Zard high/low exhaust instead of the entirely appropriate, but fairly conservative two-into-one Termignoni pipe seen here.

2006 Ducati PS Tank

From the original eBay listing: 2006 Ducati Paul Smart for Sale

Up for auction is this incredibly clean, low mile Ducati PS1000LE Paul Smart Sport Classic. This Paul Smart comes with a Termignoni system and is otherwise stock, save for the accessory seat. The bike is in near-showroom condition and has just had the 2-year service completed...it needs nothing. And with only 1,953 it's virtually new. This bike is 100% correct with zero issues, flaws or scratches.

We've had several inquiries about the tank. Currently there is no sign of warping, bubbling, etc. Tank has not been coated but looks good.

Over the last few years, the Paul Smart has become one of the most sought-after Ducatis in recent memory. Not only is the Paul Smart a competent and capable road bike that's zestful and invigorating to ride, it's also a stunningly gorgeous object of beauty.

Based on a Sport Classic engine/frame combination, the PS100LE was built to commemorate Paul Smart's classic win at Imola on the fabled 750ss. The silver bodywork and blue/green frame was meant to conjure up images of the 750 race bike - only this model contains a 1000cc dual-spark lump and top-grade Ohlins suspension to compliment the single seat and clip-on bars.

The bike is styled in the fashion of the Ducati 750 Imola Desmo race bike that Paul Smart rode to victory, and the 1974 750 SuperSport it originally inspired. It is one of the SportClassic series designed by Pierre Terblanche.

2006 Ducati PS R Side

Just 2,000 Paul Smart replicas were made, and they already command serious coin among collectors. This bike is in nearly perfect condition, although I’ve yet to see a Paul Smart that wasn’t: it’s pretty obvious that, unlike some bikes that take time to establish their collectability, buyers bought these from new well aware they’d become instant classics, and have maintained them accordingly. Bidding on this example is already up to $12,300 with the Reserve Not Met. Want to skip all that bidding drama? The Buy It Now price is set at a stunning $30,000! These have been steadily on the rise, but that still stopped me in my tracks…

Redlines – 2007 Ducati Sport 1000S

Set the way-back machine for the early 1970's and check out a Triumph TR-6, some came with red-striped Michelins, beyond cool on a BRG car.  This cared-for Ducati retro makes reference to that look, taking the red / black scheme ( standard on every 2007 Sport 1000S ) to a new level.

Manufactured for the 2006-10 model years, the Sport Classic series was based on the 992cc dual-spark engine and had 92 hp available.  The 2007  was a modern retro, with Marelli fuel injection, quiet and smooth wet clutch and big Brembo brakes.  43mm Marzocchi forks and Sachs rear shocks are are a nod toward the bottom line, rather than the start-finish line.  But with the TT-style upper fairing and spoked wheels, it's a fab look if not the most ergonomically friendly.

20160426 2007 ducati sport 1000s right mirror

Exported from Cali to Portlandia, this Sport 1000S has been kept stock enough to return to the Peoples' Republic of CARB.  Not ridden much with under 3,100 miles, it was still treated to a matching stripe on the front fender.  Tempting as it must've been to fit with carbon everything, the pebbled black covers look great with the red body.  Termis are somewhat less massive than the stock mufflers, and the flat black finish on the exhaust system fits right in.

From the eBay auction:

I am the 2nd owner; originally a Sacramento bike so can be imported back to CA no problem. 3089 Original miles. Stock aside from Termi slip ons (originals included with all emissions equip.), red tape on wheels and white stripe professionally painted on front fender to match tank stripe. Pictures describe its condition best. Did have slight expansion on tank (common problem with these bikes) due to ethanol fuel but tank was drained and sat for a year. Has contracted back to normal size. I have not coated or treated the tank in any way as if it doesn't sell I will be using ethanol free fuel only.

20160426 2007 ducati sport 1000s right rear wheel

No mention is made of maintenance, so the first order of business will be to determine whether the rubber will need re-newing.  Updating the suspension would be a very do-able update, and be transformational.  Only a couple of bids but already north of a ton and plenty of time to probe the reserve.  The bike appears undamaged and nicely detailed, and the DS motor should be trouble-free.  For the right pillion, you could remove the faux seat fairing and have a smashing biposto...
