Sport Production Speciale: 1998 Ducati 916 SPS for Sale

Not many photos accompany today's Ducati 916 SPS, although the few that are suggest the bike is in very good, lightly used condition. A classic homologation special, the bike was designed to move Ducati's production racers beyond the limits of the original 916 engine.

The 916 SPS was the first bike to use Ducati's new 996cc engine that was much more than a displacement bump: it included stronger cases to prevent cracking that occurred under racing conditions, new heads, barrels, pistons, crank, injectors, and was mated to a close-ratio gearbox shared with the 748. This 1998 example also featured lighter frame, titanium connecting rods, and a few other evolutionary tweaks.

1058 were built, making the 1998 model year bikes a bit more common than the earlier SPS and SP bikes, but that just makes it that much easier for ordinary collectors to get their hands on a bit of Ducati's racing mystique.

Number 396 [of 1098 produced], the SPS was the World Superbike homologation special with the 996 engine. A good description of features can be found at Odd Bike from Feb. 18, 2013. I purchased the bike from Touring Sport in 2004 and I am the second owner. It is titled and licensed for the street -  some are not. It has been maintained by Fast Frank Shockley and Barry Crowe.

It hasn't been down since I have owned it, but has light scratches on the lower right fairing from a fall off the stand [see picture].

It is original except: replacement gas tank [rust], clutch slave cylinder and the hand grips may not be original. The wheels are Marchesinis. The battery was converted to a light weight Earth X.

My understanding is that, due to noise requirements, these were never technically legal here in the US, although plenty have been road-registered here at this point: this particular bike is in North Carolina, and the 10,000 miles suggest it's seen a bit of use. Bidding is up over $8,600 with the Reserve Not Met, no surprise since the last couple we've featured have gone for $11,000-12,000.

Little SPO: 1993 Ducati 888 SPO for Sale

To me, the very names for cars and bikes are simple, to the point. Leganza? What the hell's a Leganza? Or a Spectra? But a GTO, or... a GTO? That just sounds cool. Thunderace sounds kind of silly, but R1M? That just exudes confidence. Even with a naturally cool-sounding language at their disposal, the Italians know that simpler is usually better, and that the sexiest motorcycles don't need silly, made-up names: simple, blunt, alpha-numeric designations suggest a no-need-to-brag confidence. It's like a special code, and Ducati 888 SPO is basically shorthand for speed.

An evolution of the earlier 851, the liquid-cooled, four-valve 888 was the epitome of "truth in advertising." Displacing 888cc, Ducati's big v-twin was meant to take the fight to the Japanese Big Four in production-based racing, move them into the modern era, and allow them to compete at top levels of the sport. Sure, the Pantah provided the foundation four the new liquid-cooled engine, but there's no way a two-valve, air-cooled v-twin was going to have a ghost of a chance against the inline fours in World Superbike and AMA racing, and Ducati's success in those series brought them back to prominence on the world stage.

Over in Europe, they got the standard 888 Strada and the higher-performance 888 SP5. But the SP5 wasn't road-legal here, so we got a sort of halfway step between the two that was dubbed the SPO or Sport Production Omologato. It was distinguished by the solo tail, high-mount exhaust, and an Öhlins shock with adjustable ride-height. Unlike the SP5, the SPO used a steel subframe instead of a lightweight aluminum one.

Look, if you've been waiting since my first paragraph to tell me how I'm wrong and that some cool bike names exist, go right ahead. It's not like I'm going to disagree that exceptions exist: Superleggera springs immediately to mind. But I still say that 888 SPO is a name that is aging better than Fireblade. On that note, it is kind of odd that here in the USA, land of the Vortec V6 and the Blue Flame Six, we got the CBR instead of the Fireblade and the YZF1000R instead of the Thunderace... So I guess we like our car-related names silly but our bike names [mostly] serious.

This is a near mint 888 SPO 1993 model. Needs nothing, belts and service were done, starts and rides wonderfully, new battery, just downsizing my collection. One flaw on the number one decal. Runs like new, good tires, needs nothing. It needs to go to a 888 lover. Pics say everything. About 13,000 miles which may change if I decide to take a hop. I reserve the right to cancel the auction the bike is for sale locally in the Fort Worth, TX area.

Aside from that first image, the photos are uniformly terrible, and the usual top triple shot showing the Limited Edition plaque is missing, as is any verification of the mileage. But that doesn't seem to be deterring bidders. Previous SPOs we've featured have sold for right around $10,000 but it appears values have risen in the past year: bidding on this example is up to $12,000 with several days left on the auction. That's not really a surprise: the 851 and 888 were pretty undervalued for a while, but collectors have definitely started to notice them and recognize their significance as the original modern Ducati superbike.

The Ducati 888 SPO is a bit of a hidden jem, no doubt due to the bike that came right after it, the 916. Only produced for two years and specific to the USA, the 888 SPO was a limited edition of the 888 – only 390 were produced.

NOTE: 1993 was the first year the bike was introduced and saw a total a total of 290 built that year for the US market. A further 100 were made in '94 with some subtle changes. The 1993 model was known as the 888SPO, while the ’94 was technically known as the 888LTD.

Featuring the trademark desmo valve V-Twin, the 888 SPO/LTD series produced 94 horsepower and were very much suited to track time. Though road legal, the riding position is what one would call “committed”, and they weren’t friendly in traffic.

For a limited edition Ducati, the 888SPO seems to gets less mention as a desired collectible than the mass produced 916. Personally I think this is beautiful bike and given that it was used as the basis for bikes that won both the World Superbike and AMA Superbike championships in 1993, it should certainly be part of any Ducati fans collection.

Limited information from the seller is as follows:

For sale an amazing Ducati 888 SPO with 11000 original miles. the bike is mint and very well taking care of. Recently serviced for over $2000 by Pro Italia. NOS original Termignoni just installed as well.
for serious collector only.

So what's it worth? Well maintenance for this bike seems to have been done but I would still try to find out info about belts and any head and/or base gasket leaks. Back in July a SPO with 712 miles was listed on RSBFS and that went for 16k USD so the asking price of this one at 15.5k is pretty much spot on . While mileage is higher, its for sale in California which tends to bump up the price a bit. All in all, this seems to be a good option for a west coast collector to acquire a 888 SPO.

Moving the Game Forward: 1988 Ducati 851 for Sale

Motorcycle Designer Pierre Terblanche is a somewhat controversial figure in the world of motorcycle design. Notably held responsible for Ducati’s controversial 749/999 bikes and Sport Classics, you’ll find a great deal of internet hate directed at him. I happen to be a fan of the 749/999 bikes but I acknowledge that they’re not especially pretty bikes. I expect that they’ll eventually be recognized as classics in their own right, and they are certainly more humane and useable bikes than the notoriously uncomfortable 916.

However, many people who are highly critical of his designs forget that he was also penned the innovative Supermono and was also responsible for the 900SS redesign, along with the 851/888 bikes. The Ducati 851 is obviously not as iconic or as elegant as the later 916, it’s also far less common, and has a very simple, purposeful look that suits it.

Setting the stage for Ducati’s modern superbikes, the liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, four-valve 851 displaced, perhaps surprisingly, 888cc’s and made just over 100bhp. Not all that much in today’s terms, but those 104 horses came with a flat wall of torque that shoots the bike out of corners with authority, accompanied by the characteristic musical booming that Ducati fans know so well.

Suitable for any museum or private collector or someone that just wants to ride but I recommend a full service and new tires first.
Dials, gauges and switch gear are nice and bright, not faded. Body paint quality nice and clean. No stress cracks in fibreglass bodywork, never dropped.

Overshadowed by the Tamburini design that followed, these are still largely unappreciated. From a historical point of view, the 851/888 represents a huge step forward for Ducati into the modern era with their use of liquid-cooling and four-valve heads. This particular example has a really nice carbon, dual-headlight fairing fitted by well-known California Laverda tuner Lance Weil. It may not be to everyone's taste, but the original parts are included, so it should be very easy to put right.

Maybe it’s not the prettiest bike, but one that does the business and is rare to boot. Grab this for relative peanuts, then start scouring the internet for a 50mm Termignoni “spaghetti” full race exhaust for the full, window-shattering experience.

Heck With The Wedding:  1995 Ducati 888 SP5 In The UK

Now this is something to pay attention to in the UK, not some silly wedding.  Didn't we politely ask the Brits to leave years ago so we wouldn't have to witness such events?  Lets talk Ducati history though not American history!  They still look good don't they?  More than good, they just look "right".  There is nothing extra there, just a bare bones racing motorcycle disguised as a street bike.

 

Exclude the Supermono and former race bikes; are the 888 SP's the most collectible Ducati's?  How about this one: if offered a 2011 1098 Tri Color or a 888 SP4 or 5, which would you take?  I'd take the classic in a heart beat.

While looking up info on the SP5, I came across a good discussionon the SP4 vs. the SP5.  Guys were arguing the case for both bikes and then someone tossed in the info that the SP2 was the last of the SP's to be built in Ducati's race shop. Does that give it more points to Ducati purists?  Interesting stuff to say the least.

This particular example has traveled 8852 miles.  It is relatively stock with a Termignoni exhaust and White Power shock added to the mix.

1993 Ducati 888 SPO In Virginia

This is a very nice looking 888 SPO located on the East Coast.  Located in Varina, Virginia is a 1993 Ducati 888 SPO with 17,500mi.  The '93 SPO is what was offered in the U.S. because the SP5 couldn't pass U.S. regulations and they needed something to Homologate the 888 for AMA Superbike.  These are more closely related to the 888 Strada than the SP5 bikes.  Some more information about the SPO:

The SPO engine was identical to that of the 888 Strada, but many chassis components were shared with the SP5.The stainless-steel front discs and Showa fork were shared with the 888 Strada, but the SPO had a single seat, upswept exhaust pipes, and an Ohlins shock absorber with eccentric ride height adjustment. Even though it was a Monoposto, there wasn't an aluminum rear subframe as on other Sport Production models.

Doug posted one of these SPO's with 13,696mi for $8,900 just less than two weeks ago and it can be seen here.  The asking price for this example seems to be a very fair $7,000 in comparison.  This bike looks to be in perfect, original and unmodified condition.  If you're looking for art that you can take out on the town and into the back-roads, see this SPO on Craigslist here.
