It is a marriage most unusual. Take a long-travel motocross machine and give it a real hard look. What do you see? To some, it is far more than a dirt bike. Some see a lightweight chassis and a torquey motor. Some picture it with modified suspension bits to bring the overall height closer to ground level. The real forward thinkers see it with full road race bodywork, big brakes and slick tires. Can a dirt bike survive a marriage to go-fast-on-asphalt bits? It can indeed. What's more is it *thrives* on the changes. What used to be a mogul stomper becomes a bonafide corner-carving demon. With a little ingenuity and foresight, a new racing class is born. A class that epitomizes lower cost without sacrificing performance or fun. Enter the realm of the Super Single (aka Formula 450): A dirt bike-bred racer with all the right sights and sounds without bespoke race bike bills.

The F450 class was the brainchild of motorcycle hall of famer Gavin Trippe, aided by Troy Lee and Roland Sands. The goal was to create more opportunity for younger riders to enter into racing without the high financial hurdles of existing professional classes. It was claimed that a F450 - based on any eligible, existing 450cc motorcrosser - could be assembled for as little as $10,000. In time the actual figures crept up closer to the $15k mark, but even this was far below a competitive 600cc superstock class bike. By 2009 there were nearly 10 different manufacturers that had an offering in the 450cc motocross class - between the cost and bike availability it would seem that the Formula 450 class was a no-brainer. It was not to be quite so easy, however. While F450 classes did exist, the popularity of this route for younger riders was never truly established. Today these are race-worthy machines, outstanding track day mounts, and flat out fun.

This particular F450 is a bit of a superstar. You are looking at the AMA F450 champion from 2008, ridden by Tyler Odom. Since the seller acquired the machine, it went through only minor changes, and was engaged in track days. Aside from riding, this is a striking bike that surely belongs astride a billiards table in your man cave. With lots of carbon and what looks like tremendous adjustability from those trick rearsets, you'll be sitting pretty in no time at all. And when it comes to riding, you will be at the top of your class at the next track day. Perhaps you want to dip your toes into amateur racing? The Super Single class fits into many classes created by regional sanctioning bodies as well. Maintenance and longevity - the Achilles heel of any racer - are maximized via the use of largely stock componentry. This is a lot of bike for not much coin - especially when you compare it to a racing two-stroke machine or cash-hungry open classer.

We don't post many custom builds but I think you'll agree that an exception had to made here. If you're not familiar with this bike, yes, that's a Desmosedici that has been customized as a flat tracker! Build by famous bike builder Roland Sands, this was reportedly as $200k build. One of the most controversial custom bikes ever built is for sale. The Roland Sands Designs Ducati Desmo Tracker, affectionately dubbed "The Dirty Desmo" by Cycle World is in need of a new home. I comissioned this build by my bud Roland and his amazing team (Rodney, Aron, Cam, and the rest of the RSD Crew) a few years ago. I wanted to have a one off, fully functional, piece of art that paid homage to the Ducati lineage and provenance while pushing the boundries and turning heads. Saying that "the goal was acheived" is an understatement. Never have I seen more people go crazy in a positive or negative way to a motorcycle project. From high praises to literal death threats, the Desmo-Tracker garnered more attention than imagined. From the cover of the December issue of Cycle World to (at last count) over 20 covers/major articles world wide. Thousands of online articles, Men's magazines, etc. This bike was a passion project that drove recognition both good and bad beyond my wildest dreams. In the begining, the loyal Ducatista shuttered. We were concerned that any relationship with Ducati was lost. Upon completion of the build, a large percentage of the Duc loyalists were complimentary and Ducati asked me to loan them the Desmo-Tracker for display at a few venues. Why would I sell this exceptional machine? My collection has continued to evolve, I've gotten married, am starting a family, and have several new projects in the works (please don't tell my wife). I am truly looking for a great home for a one off creation. I will absolutely not be giving her away which is why I reserve the right to pull the eBay listing at any time for any reason. I have ridden the Desmo Tracker aprox 500 miles. She runs great and fires immediately. The bike has obviously been kept in a temperature controlled secured enviornment since I received it back from its press tour. None of the take off parts are being offered with the bike as I have other Desmo's. The bike started its life as number 568/1500. When I brought the bike to Roland to start the build, it had 0.5 miles on the odo. Mark Cernicky (Editor from Cycle World and another good friend) rode the bike for the Cover shoot of Cycle World around town and then on the dirt track at Ventura County Fair Grounds. Upon receipt of final delivery to my collection, the Desmo Tracker had aprox 25 miles on it. I shipped it to Sturgis to play in the Black Hills around Rally and then back to San Diego, CA where it has been for the last couple of years. It has been started twice per month religously and been kept on a trickle charger. I have ridden her aproximatley once every 60 days. The bike is street legal (has a headlight and taillights). We never put a license plate holder on the bike, however, one could be mounted easily in several places. The bike has a clean TX title that is immediately transferable. Other than Cernicky, Roland, and myself, the bike has only been ridden by a few other good friends and family members (Sir Alan Cathcart, my brother, and my father in law). I have listed a few of the tech notes below as well as a small sampling of links to various articles and websites. I am more than happy to answer questions to serious buyers only. If you send me rediculous emails, please do not be offended if I do not respond. I am also more than happy to schedule appointments to view in person for active bidders only.
