Stealth Tron Bike – 1991 BMW K1

BMW offered its radical K1 in eye-catching ketchup and mustard or a Michigan fan's navy and gold livery, but is occasionally seen in a grown-up grey or black.  This one is fan-owned and looks excellent.

1991 BMW K1 for sale on eBay

BMW was looking to inject some pizazz into its inline engine menu, and equipped the K1 with a four valve engine which was limited to 100 hp but capable of more.  The bodywork cheated the wind to a cD of .34 - a new low for a production machine.  Contrary to their usual practice of building most everything in house, Marzocchi forks and Brembo brakes were used to complete the BMW Paralever's work.  Always a safety innovator, the company made ABS standard on the K1.

Bone stock with just over 10,000 miles, this K1 whispers the name where most examples shout.  With complex bodywork made since 1988, this '91 likely has all the adjustments made by the factory to address heat control and fit issues.  From the eBay auction:

This example is an all original K1 with no modifications.  The bike has been recently serviced and has a new battery.   Powered by a 1000CC/100 hp engine that runs smooth and strong.  Transmission shifts flawlessly through all gears.   The factory graphics on the gray K1 were subtle and only across the base of the fairing. The bike needs nothing but a new home.  Odometer has just kilometers; above distance ridden is listed in miles because kilometers are not offered.   The K1 is a very nice collectable bike that will be a valued addition to any collection.   Bike is sold on a clear Florida title in my name.

The K1 attempted to bridge the sport-touring divide with an interesting result.  A sporty engine concealed an annoying secondary vibration, and the sleek design required special soft luggage.  Wet weight and wide turning radius made it an experienced rider's machine, which I guess the MSRP did as well.  This is a super example for a fan or collector without a taste for the garish 90's graphics...

1KK1 – 1990/1991 BMW K1’s

Odd enough to see a single K1 up for sale, but a St. Louis specialty motoring shop has two in the house. The Bahnstorming liter-bike was BMW’s comprehensive solution to the sport/touring question.

1990/1991 BMW K1’s for sale on eBay

As ever, BMW was anxious to make their own way with their new inline four, laid on its side to get the mass as low as possible.  A new four-valve head helped the engine right to the 100 hp limit.  A trellis frame arched over the engine and supported conventional forks and the new Paralever rear shaft drive.  The wind-cheating seven piece fairing had available luggage fit to each opening, but held heat too much for some riders.  All U.S. imports were ABS equipped.

Both these K1’s look excellent and sound well-maintained, each in one of the more sane color choices.  The 1990 has just over 20,000 miles and the Staintune exhaust, while the -91’s asking price reflects its 70K miles, though it does come with the factory tank bag and luggage.

From the 1990’s eBay listing:

Same Owner for 16 Years
Special Aerodynamic Design
Sport Touring Package
1 of 613 imported to the U.S with the Blue and yellow paint scheme
Staintune Stainless Steel Performance Exhaust ($1200 option)

And about the 1991:

California bike, San Francisco Bay Area since new
1 of 670 K1s imported to the United States
Classic Black Metallic paint with orange decals
Factory Anti-lock Brakes
New rear tire, new ABS relay and new fork seals completed in May of 2017
Level 2 service was performed within the last 2,500 miles
Original tank bag with both rain covers, tool kit and original saddle bags with K1 rain covers

BMW moved its sport-touring meter sharply toward sport with the K1, though it was never caught up in race-inspired weight reduction or horsepower battles.  Most early adopters are likely aging out of the hobby at this point, and though only a few thousand made it here over the five years of production, more will be showing up for sale.  Very presentable and open to offers, one these K1’s might be the bookend to a collection or the ticket to the tour of a lifetime...

Naked Aggression – 2007 BMW K1200R Sport

BMW's niche of performance, clientele, and MSRP has given even their dabbles a certain credibility.  A marque that has always had a standard in the line-up ventured into musclebike territory in the mid-2000's swapping some fuel economy for showroom excitement.  The owner of this mildly customized K1200R Sport gives a nod to the days when all BMW's were black.

2007 BMW K1200R Sport for sale on eBay

Early oughties BMW developed a canted 1157cc inline four and put it in three models, S, GT, and R.  The K1200R for 2007 pushed 163 ponies, right up there for a semi-standard.  The box L-frame carried the stressed engine and was supported by BMW's Duolever front end and Paralever shaft-drive rear, which had electronically adjustable suspension as an option.  Power-assist EVO brakes had ABS available but traction control was still just over the horizon.  The Sport model had a Supersport fairing which cut the wind and allowed a relaxed handlebar position.

Evidently curated by a knowledgeable Florida owner, this K1200R Sport was retro-modded to BMW black and has covered under 1,000 miles.  The usually bare engine has an aftermarket carbon fairing which is a nice improvement, as is the Puig windscreen.  From the eBay auction:

Response to Questions:
1. Original color was "White Aluminum Metallic M"
2. Factory options include: sport wheels, heated grips, white turn indicators, Integral ABS II
3. Original keys and manuals shown in updated photos are included
4. Original factory MSRP sticker has been added to photos
5. The tires are original
6. Bike starts, idles, and runs like new
7. Bike has all recalls completed by BMW in Orange CA. Work Orders provided
8. Factory tail light will be reinstalled prior to shipping.

The price is absolutely FIRM. This gorgeous 2007 BMW K1200R Sport is in perfect shape with less than 1000 original miles. It has spent 10 years on display in a motorcycle collection and it looks and rides like new.
The bike has been upgraded with gloss black paint (by local BMW painter), lower carbon fiber cowling, clear tail-light, raised bars, and Puig windscreen. Nothing else is needed on this incredible bike.

Collectability would be enhanced is this had been a factory special rather than a customer's design, but very few of the K1200R Sports were made, and this one is pretty special.  Vertigo-inducing pictures show it to be flawless except for the peeled-off reflectors, and great options save ESA.  The ask is a third more than the Sport cost new, which will be a challenge for a brand that prides itself on longevity almost above all else...

Land-Speed Record Holder – 2006 BMW K1200S

Giving K-bike riders an S of their own, BMW introduced the K1200S in 2004 and never looked back.  The K1200S was BMW's first transverse inline-4, a development project on the road to the S1000RR, but a great supersport and rival to the Hayabusa and ZX-12.  In late 2005, a stock K1200S famously set records at Bonneville for solo and two-up sportbikes.

2006 BMW K1200S for sale on eBay

BMW tweaked the 1157cc engine, tilted forward 55 degrees and running 13:0 compression, it's good for 167 hp.  The angle led to a longer bike, but Duolever front end and Paralever rear keep handling sharp for a heavyweight.  The beginning of the electronic era, the K1200S had ABS, electronically adjustable suspension ( ESA ) and a pushbutton windscreen, all optional along with the rider information display.  The 4-2-1 exhaust appears under the full fairing and enters a right-side muffler, this time updated to Two-Brothers flat-weave carbon fiber.

Unblemished and with limited ungrades, this R1200S appears undamaged and has a neat Sargent seat with cargo pod.  Not sure whether ABS and ESA were ordered for this K1200S, but low miles and new rubber indicate a lot of maintenance-free riding until the chain-driven valve train needs adjustment.   From the eBay auction:

Under 8,600 total miles, but still being minimally ridden
Fixed Price $9,000 or best offer

Upgrades/Mods:
Has Two Brothers Carbon Exhaust: ($700 upgrade) sounds amazing!
Search part number: 005-1280407v

Sargent Seat and Rear Storage POD ($1500 upgrade)
sargentcycle dot com/Seats-Accessories/World-Sport-Modular-Seat-System-BMW-K1200S-K1300S plus still have original seat too.

New Dunlop Tires ($350), less than 500 miles on them.

INCLUDED with Asking price:  $650 Bell Star Airtrix Laguna 100% Carbon Race Helmet with $150 Photocromatic shield and zippered carry bag size: L - large.

As one would expect, the K1200S is rather too heavy for any road course honors, but a winning and very sporty tourer.  Electronic fuel injection, ABS, and suspension all make for a 21st century ride, and superbike power and torque unreel the mile markers quickly.  The most powerful BMW in the 2006 line-up, a production model BMW K1200S set a world land speed record in the 1000-1350cc stock, partially streamlined, naturally aspirated motorcycle class at Utah's famed Bonneville Salt Flats.  On the strip it was capable of 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and a 10-second quarter, and piloted by Andy Sills of San Francisco, the bike reached an average speed of 173.57 mph, and top speed of 176.89 mph after two runs on the vast white Salt Flats.  He and a pillion also clocked a record speed of 169 mph, riding the K1200S two-up with fearless Erin Hunter...

For a Beemer – 2004 BMW R1100S

After a 20-year break since the R100/S, BMW's re-entrance to the more sporting side was thoughtfully  considered, with lots of new engineering, and as they approach classic status, a great success.  This nicely-updated R1100S looks excellent and fans of the brand would say, just broken in with 22,000 miles.

2004 BMW R1100S for sale on eBay

The R1100S arrived with concepts new to sportbikes - the four-valve 1085cc boxer, Telelever  front and Paralever rear suspension with shaft drive, single-plate clutch, ABS, and some things newer to BMW - clip-on handlebars and underseat exhaust.  BMW kept their vaunted build quality and usual Bosch fuel injection, but tried to leave the weight behind.  The engine is a stressed member of the aluminum chassis, and the supersport fairing flows from the beak, over the tank to the pillion cover.   Great power at 98 hp with 72 ft.-lbs. torque, and with a dry weight of 505 lbs. it's light for a BMW.

Offered by an Illinois dealer, this R1100S looks well taken care of and has the optional grey / orange checkerboard.  A more sporting build since the ABS, centerstand, and heated grips were left off.  The owner has upgraded to Ohlins dampers on both ends, and added conspicuity lights on the fork legs.  The bags look like they just came out of the closet where, handy as they are, they should be returned.  From the eBay auction:

This 2004 BMW R1100S has only 22,370 miles and has had all of its maintenance performed by Cycle Werks in Barrington, we are an authorized BMW dealer.  This bike comes with BMW Saddle Bags, Ohlins suspension, Aux. Driving Lights, and much more!

For a BMW it's sporty, light, and this one with low miles, and though succeeded by the R1200S, the R1100S is regarded as the better track machine.  The bike was the source of many years of the Boxer Cup, a single marque support series, resulting in the special edition Boxer Cup Replica.  But you can find an R1100S at almost any track day or racing school, just look for the guy with no trailer, he'll be riding it home...

Don’t Arrest Me Red – 2007 BMW R1200S

Every supercar manufacturer has their adult red, a deep metallic indicating adulthood and serious investment.  This 1200cc BMW sportbike is one of the company's best, a repaint in McLaren's Volcano Red, nicely upgraded with low miles.

Updating their epic R1100S, BMW saw the writing on the GVWR sticker, and took steps to raise the power to weight ratio on the new machine, using bigger valves and throttle bodies, and forged pistons while reducing the weight with a new frame.  122 ponies find their way through the 6-speed and Paralever shaft drive.  Below the Telelever front end, dual 320mm unlinked EVO brakes are followed by 265mm rear, and ABS has track disable switch.  The sculpted supersport fairing cuts through the wind for the rider, and most -S's had a pillion seat, though this one has gone monoposto.

New carbon front and rear fenders and engine timing cover all by Ilimberger in Germany - not the cheap knockoffs
New Carbon fiber license plate bracket
New Ohlins Suspension front and rear
New headers by Sandbar composites in England with Akropovic titanium muffler - cost $1,800.
New AF-XIED adjustable oxygen sensor calibration which allows for mixture adjustment throughout RPM range in both open and closed loop. ($325)
Corbin seat
New Tinted windshield
Heli-bars with approx 3/4" rise
New CNC clutch and brake levers ($200)
New PIAA dual horns hidden behind the fairing. Loud as hell!
New Clear turn signal lenses
New Parabolic mirrors
Completely serviced this spring -1,500 miles ago. Brake and clutch fluid flush, engine, transmission and final drive oils changed, drive splines lubed, new tires front and rear, valves adjusted, throttles synchronized, new K&N air filter. New spark plugs
Rear wheel flange and fuel pump both replaced ( recall )

Not often an owner would re-paint the factory option livery, but it's inkeeping with the rest of the bike - low miles, premium upgrades, impeccable condition.  Not sportiest of bikes, but big torque straightens a lot of roads and the cockpit is somewhat more comfortable than the average superbike.  Would look good in the garage with an Arena Red Porsche 993 and the Montalcino Red Rover in the driveway...
