Bonhams Spring Stafford Sale – April 21st!

Update 4.23.2018:  We've updated most of the listings below with their sale prices, and estimates from Bonhams were very close in most cases.  Their showcase pieces did very well also.  From Bonhams:

Bonhams Spring Stafford Sale took place this weekend (21 and 22 April) at the International Classic MotorCycle Show and saw an incredible 92% of lots sold, achieving a total of £3,376,045 (US $4,708,029).

Several world records were broken, including the 1970 Clymer Münch 1,177cc TTS 'Mammoth' which achieved a staggering £154,940 and the 1973 MV Agusta 750S which realized £96,700, the highest prices ever achieved for these models at auction.

1978 NCR-Ducati 900SS

Along with serving as Ducati's skunk works and occasional racing department, the N.C.R. motorcycle design studio and fabrication shop made ( and continues to make ) some very special road machines. This commemorative of Mike Hailwood's 1978 TT win is located in Italy and seriously collectible.

So rare that this might be a unicorn or one of just a handful, this N.C.R. was evidently built in the early 1980's on a 1978 900SS donor, using the aircooled 864cc bevel-drive engine.  Race fabricator DASPA built the frame, with bespoke suspension, Brembo single-puck calipers, N.C.R. exhaust, and fairings from a factory 1979 MHR.  The cockpit is race-derived with only a rev counter under the windscreen, clip-ons and rearsets.

From an Italian eBayer showing some Ducati parts and fine watches, this N.C.R. fibs about its age, the bodywork having rich color and many aluminum parts polished up.  From the eBay auction:

This pristine example underwent the works of Nepoti & Caracchi Racing in the early 80's, using an original 900SS as base platform, to become a street version of the NCR race motorcycles that were racing those days.  1979 model tank-seat and fairing, original, original paint ( fairing has been retouched recently to correct small issues like chips here and there not from falls ).  DASPA frame. Campagnolo magnesium rims ( recently checked and repainted ).  NCR racing exhaust 2-into-1.  Dell'Orto carbs. mild cams.  Veglia tacho is original from period not recent replica, and has both kick and electric starter, which was a common combo for "endurance" configurations at those time.  Everything works perfectly on this Ducati, motor sounds great, no strange noises, no smoke, no oil leaks.

Started in only 1967 by Bolognese founders Nepoti, Caracchi and Rizzi, the R stood for racing after Luigi Rizzi parted ways with the company.  Since then they have built and managed the racing of many Ducatis the corporation didn't have time for, and more recently created some exquisite designer road machines.  Likely a side project for a special client, this 900SS is an interesting mix of late 70's and later MHR hardware, with a nice helping of N.C.R. unobtanium.  It has turned a km or three in the past and wouldn't hurt to be ridden a bit on its way to the display stand...

Outasight – 2008 Ducati-NCR Mike Hailwood TT

Since its formation in 1967, NCR motorcycles has been Ducati's de-facto competition arm, developing and producing race bikes based on Ducati themes.  For the 30th anniversary of Mike Hailwood's 1978 Isle of Man TT victory ( on an NCR-built Ducati 900SS ), the company produced a very short run of super light, no-holds-barred commemoratives, with titanium frame and 1120cc air-cooled desmo engine.

With the founders ready to retire in 2001, the owners of Poggipolini, a titanium manufacturing specialist, took an interest in NCR, and the Mike Hailwood TT became a showcase for advanced techniques, with a full titanium trellis and exhaust system.  Internal to the 130 hp V-twin is a billet crank, while the carbon fairings and wheels are easier to appreciate.  4-piston Brembo billet calipers and Öhlins MotoGP forks are leading edge, while the nostalgic twin rear Öhlins shocks at least leave room for the exhaust headers.

A number of the NCR Mike Hailwoods were delivered at the 2009 Isle of Man race, where the factory website says they were raced, though it may have been in an exposition part of the event.  The Vegas owner has added a couple of nice extras, and has this to say in the eBay auction:

Though the next owner will be a rare collector, the auction has a dozen bids, with $50K not hitting the reserve.  NCR's ( and Poggipolini's ) credibility is above reproach, and the 300 lb. machine is one of just a dozen or so.  Though one could quibble that these machines are built to be ridden, this TT likely will never see that third mile...

Pantah-stic: 1981 NCR Ducati 600TT for Sale

Ducati's first motorcycle was the Cucciolo [or "puppy" in Italian], which was basically a simple engine strapped to a bicycle, an affordable tool to get the Italian population mobile and back to work after the end of World War II. Certainly a far cry from the frameless, race-inspired exotica they're famous for today. This NCR 600TT hails from the middle period of Ducati's history, and is powered by the grandfather of all their modern v-twin engines, the single overhead cam, two-valve Pantah.

They're famous for the format today, but Ducati didn't start out making v-twin sportbikes. Instead, once they graduated from producing simple, efficient people-movers, they built and raced single-cylinder motorcycles of various displacements, before eventually building their first v-twin. The hottest versions of those earliest v-twins featured Ducati's trademark Desmodromic valve-actuation that has become their engineering trademark. But they also used a complex and expensive-to-manufacture system of tower shafts and bevel gears to operate the overhead cams, and Ducati needed to increase profitability to stay afloat, so introduced a parallel twin that was much more compact and affordable to produce and assemble, much to the horror of famous engineer Fabio Taglioni.

That parallel-twin engine proved to be a massive flop, but Taglioni continued to develop the v-twin on his own, and the Pantah was the result. The revised v-twin swapped the tower-shaft and bevel-drive cam-drive of the earlier engine for a much simpler rubber belt arrangement. This meant the engine was less expensive to manufacture, but also meant owners needed to religiously maintain their bikes, as failure of the toothed rubber belt led to catastrophic engine damage. Today's Ducati engines are direct descendants of that original two-valve v-twin.

This particular Pantah-powered machine is literally a racebike with lights, and includes frame, bodywork, and preparation by NCR. If you're not familiar, NCR are best known today for their high-performance and obsessively lightweight Ducati parts, as well as for converting already expensive exotica into completely un-affordable, even more exotic exotica. But before that, they were originally a race team. The race team, in fact, responsible for Ducati's many racing successes until the creation of their in-house racing division, including Mike Hailwood's famous TT-winning bike, so they've been around the track a few times. Although the bike does include a headlight, a tail light, and turn signals, it appears that wasn't enough to get past rigorous TÜV certification and the bike couldn't be registered for road use in Germany where it was stored for many years. Maybe a new American owner will have more luck?

The 1981 Ducati Scuderia N.C.R was one of the preeminent motorcycle racing teams of all time. They were the de-facto Ducati factory race team from the early 1970s until Ducati took it in-house with Ducati Corsa in 2000. They continued as privateers and had success with rider Ben Bostrom. The company was then sold and continues as a specialist builder of very high end motorcycles.

NCRs wins on the world stage are almost too numerous to mention. But Imola 200 winners Paul Smart, Isle of Man TT winners Mike Hailwood were all on the bevel drive NCRs. The string of wins by Tony Rutter on the belt drive TT2 were all Nepoti and Caracchi machines that made NCR a household name with their distinctive logo of a speeding helmet clad dog.

Nepoti and Caracchi Racing designed their own frame for the belt drive Pantah based series. This was the 600TT. It differs from the more common TT2, which was more of a Ducati design. A total of nine frames were made by Verlicchi and a further two by DM. All but two were racing frames. Of these two street bikes produced, this is the only one built with an alloy gas tank. Imagine a genuine NCR with a steering lock.

This bike has spent most of its life unused in Germany. The owner tried to convert his Pantah to a NCR framed machine, but the TUV would not allow it, due to their ultra-strict type certification. Throughout 1980s, 90s and 2000s it was in hiding. It re-surfaced in 2006 and was recommissioned. However the German owner was still not able to use it.

It came to America several years ago and has been in a private collection museum ever since. It has a US tile as the original donor Ducati Pantah.

Gas has been drained and battery removed for storage and display. We are selling this incredible machine for a client of ours and all technical questions will be answered as quickly as possible but may take time to get as he has limited access. Sold on a clean, mileage exempt US title.

Bidding is up to just north of $9,100 with plenty of interest and plenty of time left on the auction. In general, the earlier bevel-drive bikes are considered the most desirable and collectible Ducatis, but this is an exceptionally rare and cool motorcycle, considering the direct links to NCR and the fact that it's theoretically a roadgoing racebike. Obviously you should be careful to consult with your local DMV if you plan to register this machine for road use, but this one might be best used as the crown jewel in a collection anyway, considering it's status as just one of two ever built.

1998 Ducati 996 Factory Superbike!

This is the sort of bike that sets the offices of RSBFS buzzing. Feast your eyes on an actual *factory* race bike. Not an RS version of a street bike. An actual "we are the Ducati factory and we are going racing..." sort of race bike. And not just any factory bike, but one piloted by the redoubtable Troy Corser. In fact, this is likely one of the machines that he rode in the '98 season (back to WSBK after an unsuccessful stint in 500cc class) - in a year where he narrowly missed the title. A crash in warm-up during the last round of the season resulted in broken ribs and a missed opportunity, relegating Corser to 3rd in the overall standings behind Carl Fogarty and Aaron Slight.

When it comes to race bikes, rare is not enough. You need details, authenticity, and - where possible - proof. Since factory racers are not governed by motor vehicle registration bureaucracy in the same manner as a street machine, there is always the challenge of originality. It doesn't help that racers are constantly being modified during a season (and this one continued to race), further muddling the trail. With a signed letter purportedly outlining the provenance of this historic machine, a matching chassis number complete with NCR markings, and enough carbon fiber and electronics to make mere mortals weak in the knees, this bike certainly looks the business.

For most of us, this is an unusual bike that almost never surfaces. It is, in many ways, a holy grail of bike spotting. But unlike many of the collectables that we show on this site, this is not exactly something you can throw a leg over on a ride to 7-11 for a Slurpee. This is a purposeful track machine. But who would really risk this bike for a basic track day? Would you dare try to race it? The lack of spares is concerning, but the inability to replace the bike itself would scare me silly. All of which - more or less - makes this a wonderful piece of indoor artwork.

This is one of those "better bring your wallet" sort of situations. The ask for this rolling, booming, rib-breaking time-slice of WSBK is a cool $65k USD. That is actually not as sky-high as some race bikes we have seen in the past, but certainly a goodly chunk of change. Prices do not include transportation fees either. Located in Italy (where else?), this bike will need to be shipped assuming the buyer is not local. A very sweet reminder of WSBK dominance, this Ducati 996 factory racer is waiting for your call!

Simply Exquisite: 2007 Ducati/NCR New Blue for Sale

I saw this, and my jaw dropped. But before I gush over this bike, I'll admit: it's difficult to understand this extremely rare and extremely expensive Ducati/NCR New Blue without a bit of history about Old Blue.

In the early 1970's, a couple of Cycle World editors were racing one of only a handful of 750SS Ducatis in the States. Cook Neilson and Phil Schilling called their creation the "California Hot Rod," and they had some success with the bike. But when the AMA announced their new Superbike series for 1976, they knew they needed to make some changes. The bike was heavily modified, with new wheels and a new transmission. Displacement was bumped and the refreshed 883cc motor ironically featured Harley intake valves. The new bike also featured new paint which was, as I'm sure you can guess, blue.

At Daytona during the 1977 Superbike season, Old Blue absolutely crushed the competition, earning Ducati their very first outright race win in North America, a significant achievement and a major milestone in their quest to gain relevance in the major market the US represents.

In 2007, Ducati teamed up with NCR to create a track-only homage to Old Blue name, unsurprisingly, New Blue. It was obviously based on the Paul Smart 1000S, but only the frame and swingarm remain unmodified. Extensive changes dropped weight from 414lbs to 330lb and the hugely uprated Dual Spark L-twin engine thumped out 116hp to the rear wheel.

That may not sound like that much by modern superbike standards, but New Blue has a fat midrange, is very lightweight, and handles like a 600. As you can see from the photos, components are top-notch and the preparation is absolutely stunning: the bike just drips titanium, magnesium, and carbon-fiber

This is number 12 of 50. This is a mint condition like new race bike. ** It was never issued with a title and was only meant to be raced and it does not come with a title (eBay does not have a no title option so I had to mark clear title above) ** It has been stored inside a heat controlled facility. The tail section has been hand signed by Cook Neilson & Phil Schilling. It is pictured without the belly pan but it comes with the bike and has since been re installed. This bike was started when new and driven around the block once so I don't know the exact mileage because the battery was removed. This bike has never been raced.

This particular machine was featured a while back on this site and there is very little time left on the auction, but this bike was just too good to pass up posting. Although $75,000 is obviously insane money for a motorcycle, if any modern bike is worth that kind of money, this one certainly is. Obviously not in terms of pure performance, but in terms of exquisite workmanship, heritage, and the involvement of the original racers that helped make Ducati the success it is here in the USA.

So if it's not a value proposition, what is this? Well for most of us, it's an object to be wondered at, or drooled over, or to heap scorn upon. But for folks with real money, it's the perfect living room decoration, or the ultimate track day bike.
