Bonhams Las Vegas 2017 Recap

While I've known about the Mecum and Bohmans auctions in Las Vegas for several years now, this was my first chance to go. We found a great package for the Bellagio and decided to make a quick trip of the event. Unfortunately we were only able to make it to the Bonhams sale but as a first taste of live auction action, we were not disappointed. Not to mention they had dozens of bikes that fit the RSBFS niche. I've highlighted a handful below with some shaky videos and quick snapshots.

Many thanks to Nick and Jared at Bonhams who graciously gave me the nickel tour just minutes before the auction began. I look forward to returning someday soon as a registered bidder!

RSBFS notable sales:

This 2008 Ducati Desmosedici RR, one Owner with 1,500 miles sold for just $36,000 before premium!

Here is a 1985 Honda VF1000R with 4 Miles that sold for $11,500 before premium.

And an RSBFS favorite, a 1985 Yamaha RD500LC with 1,279 Miles sold for $20,500 before premium.

But this 2003 MV Agusta F4 750 Series Oro with 0 miles didn't sell at $40k bid.

This 1984 Ducati 748cc TT1 Road Racer was a featured bike at Bonhams but failed to sell at $80k.

I was curious about this extensively upgraded 1997 Ducati 900SS/SP, which sold for $6,800 before premium. The description states there is a history files documenting $20k in work!

The MH900e market seems stable with this example showing under 5,000 miles and reaching a sale at $18,400 before premium.

This Laverda RGS1000 was bid up to $9k but did not sell.

I didn't get to see this one, but this Bimota YB8 Furano is shown as sold at $13,000 before premium.

I also wasn't able to see this Ducati 851 Tricolore with the race kit. It doesn't show a sale price. Did anyone catch what the final bid was?

Out of sheer curiosity, this Cagiva Gran Canyon sold for a mere $3,450 including premium. Nice buy!

For all the sale results, check out the results on the Bonhams website.

Bubble Popped? Multiple 2008 Ducati Desmosedici’s for sale

desmomerged

Its not surprising that a lot of the smaller motorcycle manufacturers adopted the concept of "manufactured" rarity, since this helped them compete with the Japanese.  The most dedicated proponents of the manufactured rarity concepts all seem to be italian with Bimota, Ducati, MV Agusta and even Aprilia all producing limited edition bikes.  The bikes can range from mere cosmetic upgrades like the Ducati 748 Senna and Nieman Marcus editions to serious technology pieces like the Ducati Desmosedici.

The Ducati Desmosedici was a lot more than just a reskinned standard bike.  It was instead a limited production road-legal version of the Desmosedici MotoGP racebike.   Back in 2008 Ducati made 1,500 Desmosedici models for public purchase and offered them for an eye-popping 72,500 USD.  Even in the midst of the financial crisis, all 1500 units that were produced were pre-sold, with the first going to sportbike enthusiast Tom Cruise.   Since 2008 Desmosedecci's haven't come up for sale that often, so now having several for sale at the same time on ebay US is quite unusual and I thought worthy of a post.

Here is the second one, located in California. Mileage is 3250. NOTE: This auction is ending shortly.

There is even a 3rd Desmosedici available in Canada for anyone who is located north of the border, or anyone who perhaps want to take advantage of the current exchange rate.

Now before I get to the part where we discuss what these are worth, its important for people to remember the problem with manufactured rarity; once the novelty factor wears off or a better bike appears in the lineup, there is usually a fair amount of price depreciation.  Many manufactured rarity-type bikes really struggle to ever appreciate back to their original asking price and become easily available. Perhaps the best example of this is the Ducati MH900e; the bike sold out almost immediately on introduction but is now commonly available for sale on ebay.

The Desmosedeci cost an eye popping 72,500 USD when new (although supposedly many were sold for less) but now they are starting to appear up for sale with big price drops, including some down into the 40,000 USD range.  Perhaps this is due to the new SuperLeggera now being the top bike in Ducati's lineup.    It would seem that the "bubble" for these has popped and people who bought them as investments are now trying to move them off.  This means that someone who lusted after these back when they came out might be able to pick one up now at a serious reduced price.

from the seller:

I have a brand new 2008 Ducati Desmosedici RR that I need to sell, I'm the original owner of the bike and the bike is in mint condition with only 27 miles on it. The bike will come complete with all the original accessories and options that came with the bike, placque, cover, the standard factory muffler (I have the racing muffler option on there and the bike produces 200 hp with this option on it), all the factory decals, along with all the original documents and anything else that came with the bike.

I unfortunately need to sell the bike because I need to raise capital for my business, or else I wouldn't be thinking of selling this bike, but though times call for though measures and I've got a few other bikes as well in my collection, like the original 2004 MV Agusta Bruatale Oro that has like less than 50 miles on it, so again it's in mint condition, as well as 1999 Suzuki Katana 1000c that looks just like the original '82 model that has very little miles on it, again under 50 miles and in perfect mint condition. All in all, I'm realistic and fair about my prices and if you're a serious buyer by all means contact me and we can make arrangements for you to see the bike and negotiate a good deal for both for us.

Ducati Desmosedici for sale DD16

If you're a collector that has been holding out for a nearly new DD16, your wait is over. This example has just 8 miles and has been kept indoors it's whole life. Just in case this is your first introduction to this legendary offering, it's as close as you're going to get to a modern, street legal, MotoGP bike. 377 pounds dry and 197hp from it's V4 propel this collectible to 190mph! I've seen only a handful of these on the street and even at an event like the Indy MotoGP stop, they are show stoppers wherever they turn up even several years later.

Thank you to Joel for helping to support the site with a Featured Listing and good luck with the sale!

from the seller:

I am the 2nd owner of the bike and have recently acquired it. The original owner had it stored inside his home as do I now. The bike only has 8 miles from the initial set up of the bike by a certified DD16 mechanic. The bike is in 100% perfect collector condition. I am asking MSRP which is $72K and will accept trade plus cash offers on a Desmosedici with miles. These bikes are getting harder and harder to find in this condition with such low mileage. I have been searching for over 3 years and this is the lowest mileage Desmosidici I've come across. The original owner had over $90K invested in the bike. If the bike does not sell within a month I will put it on eBay but am in no rush to sell.

Bike includes the Full Titanium Termignoni $10K exhaust as well as the Ducati Performance Carbon Fiber rear hugger. Both factory exhaust systems, ECU's and factory fairings are all included in perfect condition as well. Both keys, the factory rear stand and the manual is included.

2008 Ducati DD16 Desmosedici in Portland, Oregon

Ducati DD16 Desmosedici for sale

While 2008 model years are rarely included here, I think we all agree that this limited edition Ducati isn't a just a sticker and number job. With some of the most exclusive technology ever offered on a production bike for the street, these are very special indeed and still draw lots of attention when seen in the wild. That's because many were instantly added to collections and used more for display than for riding. But this one is different having covered over 2700 miles for which we applaud the seller. This particular example is being offered by MotoCorsa in Portland which is right in my backyard. Wish it was me doing the shopping!

from the seller:

This Ducati has been well loved and ridden as it was intended. It's in excellent condition with only 2274 original miles

Incredible Moto GP technology, sound, power, and performance in a undeniably potent and sexy exterior. The D16RR is literally a Moto GP bike built for the street. At the heart of the D16RR is a compact 989cc V-Four engine inside a version of Ducati's trademark tubular-steel trellis frame. The engine uses the same bore and stroke as that used in the 2006 race bike the D16GP6. It uses the "twin pulse" firing order in which the crankpins are offset by 70 degrees to generate what Ducati terms as "soft pulse timing."

Equipped with the race ECU and exhaust system the D16RR achieves 180HP at 13800 rpm at the rear wheel. Don't miss your chance to own not only a work of art, but a motorcycle with true World Championship winning DNA! This bike comes with everything that came from the factory when you purchesed a new D16RR as picured below.

2008 Ducati Desmosedici Roland Sands Flat Tracker For Sale

We don't post many custom builds but I think you'll agree that an exception had to made here. If you're not familiar with this bike, yes, that's a Desmosedici that has been customized as a flat tracker! Build by famous bike builder Roland Sands, this was reportedly as $200k build. It has about a day left on eBay and the current bid is $35,100 reserve not met. Follow the link to get all the details and see below for an excerpt from the listing.

2008 Ducati Desmosedici Custom Flat Tracker build by Roland Sands for sale on eBay

from the seller:

One of the most controversial custom bikes ever built is for sale. The Roland Sands Designs Ducati Desmo Tracker, affectionately dubbed "The Dirty Desmo" by Cycle World is in need of a new home. I comissioned this build by my bud Roland and his amazing team (Rodney, Aron, Cam, and the rest of the RSD Crew) a few years ago. I wanted to have a one off, fully functional, piece of art that paid homage to the Ducati lineage and provenance while pushing the boundries and turning heads. Saying that "the goal was acheived" is an understatement. Never have I seen more people go crazy in a positive or negative way to a motorcycle project. From high praises to literal death threats, the Desmo-Tracker garnered more attention than imagined. From the cover of the December issue of Cycle World to (at last count) over 20 covers/major articles world wide. Thousands of online articles, Men's magazines, etc. This bike was a passion project that drove recognition both good and bad beyond my wildest dreams. In the begining, the loyal Ducatista shuttered. We were concerned that any relationship with Ducati was lost. Upon completion of the build, a large percentage of the Duc loyalists were complimentary and Ducati asked me to loan them the Desmo-Tracker for display at a few venues. Why would I sell this exceptional machine? My collection has continued to evolve, I've gotten married, am starting a family, and have several new projects in the works (please don't tell my wife). I am truly looking for a great home for a one off creation. I will absolutely not be giving her away which is why I reserve the right to pull the eBay listing at any time for any reason. I have ridden the Desmo Tracker aprox 500 miles. She runs great and fires immediately. The bike has obviously been kept in a temperature controlled secured enviornment since I received it back from its press tour. None of the take off parts are being offered with the bike as I have other Desmo's. The bike started its life as number 568/1500. When I brought the bike to Roland to start the build, it had 0.5 miles on the odo. Mark Cernicky (Editor from Cycle World and another good friend) rode the bike for the Cover shoot of Cycle World around town and then on the dirt track at Ventura County Fair Grounds. Upon receipt of final delivery to my collection, the Desmo Tracker had aprox 25 miles on it. I shipped it to Sturgis to play in the Black Hills around Rally and then back to San Diego, CA where it has been for the last couple of years. It has been started twice per month religously and been kept on a trickle charger. I have ridden her aproximatley once every 60 days. The bike is street legal (has a headlight and taillights). We never put a license plate holder on the bike, however, one could be mounted easily in several places. The bike has a clean TX title that is immediately transferable. Other than Cernicky, Roland, and myself, the bike has only been ridden by a few other good friends and family members (Sir Alan Cathcart, my brother, and my father in law). I have listed a few of the tech notes below as well as a small sampling of links to various articles and websites. I am more than happy to answer questions to serious buyers only. If you send me rediculous emails, please do not be offended if I do not respond. I am also more than happy to schedule appointments to view in person for active bidders only. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to this, as I can not judge who is sincere or not without an active bid. I will require an immediate deposit upon close of a successful eBay auction (within 24 Hours) and complete funding within 3 days (72 Hours) of auction (NO EXCEPTIONS to Domestic or International buyers). Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer upon successful completion of the auction. I do have several recomendations and/or relationships with transportation services (where introductions can be made) in the US and for export if the successful buyer is International. There is only one of these bikes on the planet. It has been an honor to be part of it's history and an absolute blast to ride. I'm excited to continue to push the envelope with new builds with my friends and equally excited for the Desmo to find a new home that will appreciate her as much as I have. I look forward to serious buyers questions via email. Happy bidding on this one off piece of RSD Italian history.
