Ride (look) like Troy:  2002 998S Bayliss Edition #308

Ducati, Bayliss and no reserve.  Three things that should go together more often.  I have to say, I really like it when sellers do no reserve auctions.  In my mind it is telling me they are serious about selling and not out fishing.  I say set a starting price you are comfortable with, take off the reserve and let it sell.  Enough of my Ebay pet peeves.

I would think this would be one desireable Ducati.  It is the body style everyone loved, it’s a limited edition race replica and it has only 2,400 miles on it.  I’d also assume this would be one of the more sought after race replicas since Bayliss is so linked to Ducati.

Have a look:

And the need to know from the auction:

you are bidding on one of the most beautiful ducati’s you could possibly buy. 2002 ducati 998s troy bayliss edition #308/400. not a common ducati to see around. loss of 1/2 my wages due to partial layoff forces sale of my beloved troy bayliss edition. only 2400 miles on it . bike is pristine, as new, not a scratch, chip ,dirt, bugs or any marks, and the engine is so clean you could eat off it . cleaned and waxed immediately after every ride [including the inside of carbon fiber side panels]. never seen rain, !! i am very/very particular with all the bikes i have owned and keep them all as new .   just had the complete service [over 800.00] 2 weeks ago. oil change, belts  and a set of new pirelli tires[200.00].

bike runs absolutely perfect !!! not one problem ever with this beauty.starts immediately every time and runs strong and perfectly !!! the sound of the termis is awsome , just look at the outlets on them ! this bike needs absolutely nothing !!!  i have seen a few of these on ebay now and then and you wont find one lower than this price!! i guarantee it !!! and most DO NOT have the service done so you will have that added expense plus the tires would need to be changed , unless you like riding on brittle 9 year old tires ???!! belts also get brittle from sitting just like the tires and can break causing severe engine damage !    this is all done for you already !!! . comes complete with troy bayliss original cover from ducati, plaque showing vin number and number of bike with original red velvet  box,2 keys and troy bayliss model original  owners manual.like i stated before this is #308 out of 400 made world wide with only  140 coming to the USA.  most you dont see and will never see because people are storing them and are not ridden, but  i have never seen any #200-#299 in the country ,but that doesnt mean there are not any. fuel tank has troy bayliss’s hand signed autograph  clear coated from the factory to ensure it does not wipe/wax/rub off, these were all hand signed by bayliss on the specal editions and are not a stamped autograph
No bidding on this beauty as I sit and write this in the plush RSBFS offices.  Bidding is starting at roughly $11,500.   If I remember correctly, wasn’t the MSRP on these around $25,000?  Could someone say they got a good deal if they could snag this one in the mid to high teens?  Anyone purchased a Bayliss replica lately?  Questions, questions.   .

2004 Ducati 998S Final Edition In Southern California With 2,900 Miles

This 998S FE is in showroom condition and has never seen water, not even from a hose!  Located in Costa Mesa, California is a 2004 Ducati 998S, Final Edition, with 2,900 miles on the odometer.  The seller states that this bike has never seen water from rain or a hose and has always been wiped down and kept under cover in a garage.  The only modifications from stock are Termignoni titanium exhaust, titanium clutch cover, and a Power Commander.  The parts were all installed by an official Southern California Ducati dealer and the bike was tuned to match–all original parts are included with the bike.

We’ve seen a few of the 112 998S Final Edition bikes that were imported into the U.S. and mileage seems to determine the value more than anything.  This, current, 998S with 2,900 miles is advertised at $12,500.  A recent listing for a modified 9.5k mile bike had an asking price of $8.5k but, we also saw an odd 147, supposedly, original mile example for sale from a dealer for $23k so you can see how big the swing is and none of the bikes we’ve seen have had over 10k miles.  I would say that in the heat of summer–and an excellent economy–this bike is probably priced right heading into the end of May but, anything could happen and the seller may need to be flexible if they want to move it quickly.

The 998S, FE, features an Ohlins steering damper, fully adjustable front and rear Ohlins suspension, a Ducati Corse extended crankcase sump, a special graphics kit and a silver plaque on the triple clamp.

2004 Ducati 998S Final Edition With 147 Original Miles

Here is another 998S Final Edition with very low miles!  Located in Los Angeles, California is a 2004 Ducati 998S Final Edition with 147 original miles.  For only 112 of these coming into the U.S., they’ve recently become available in CaliforniaArizona and now another one in California.  The other two 998S FE’s we posted were modified and had some actual use but, one was priced at $8,500 and had 9,500 miles.  The asking price for this bike is $22,995.  The seller is a dealer but, I still suspect that this is a bit steep for a 998S at this point regardless of mileage.  However, if you’re looking for the last of the 916 line, with the least amount of miles, see this one on Craigslist here.

2004 Ducati 998S Final Edition In California

Here is another 998S Final Edition with some expensive modifications.  Located in Fremont, California is a 2004 Ducati 998S Final Edition.  Ducati says that only 112 of these were brought into the U.S. and that they were only avialable as a special order.  This example has a laundry list of mods as do many Ducati’s, they include:

Mag Marches , DP C/F head light bucket and stays , intake runners ,under tail air box , front and rear fenders , V shroud , FBF risers , EVO slave , CRG levers , STM btreather , EVO low temp switch , relocated battery , geared , Termi exhaust and ECU , tt rear sets very adjustable , DP seat , led rear light , tall screen , a set of track plastics , stands , DP C/F mirrors , NCR cap , STM slipper alloy basket and plates ,STM rotor buttons front and rear , STM Ti wire guard ,milled rs cover , Nichols FW ,unobtainium drilled rear rotor.

Normally we favor completely original bikes as they will hold their value in the longer run but, when the modifications include such names as Marchesini, Fast By Ferracci, and NCR, things can be overlooked.  The seller dosen’t state what he is looking to get out of the bike but he does say that “…clean stockers go in the 12s.”; suggesting that he is looking for more than that.  I posted another modified 998 FE last week with 9,500 miles and an asking price of $8,500 which should give you a relative value of this bike depending on miles.  The seller does not list mileage for this bike but it does look to be in very good condition from the pictures.  The Arizona bike shouldn’t be a definitive comparison to this California bike as this one has Marchesinis as the big ticket item and unknown mileage.  It should also be know that, if you’re looking to bring a 998S Final Edition into California, they are all California spec bikes no matter where they were originally sold.  If you’re into this 998S FE, head over to BayAreaRidersForum to see the bike here and see if you can talk the seller out of it.

2004 Ducati 998S Final Edition In Arizona

Located in Scottsdale, Arizona is a very nice 2004 Ducati 998S Final Edition.  This bike has 9,500 miles and features some usual Duc’ modifications:

-Termignoni 3/4 system
- STM slave cylinder
- kick stand ignition bypass
- carbon fiber instrument cluster, boot guards, belly pan, intake ducts, exhaust guard, exhaust pipes, chain guard, sprocket cover
- oil breather recall solution installed
- K&N filter
- CRG bar ends
- CRG adjustable brake and clutch levers
- Michelin Pilot Power dual compound tires
- SpeedyMoto clutch cover basket, springs, and plates.

The 998S FE is the last incarnation of Ducati’s legendary, and iconic, 916.  As standard these bikes featured fully-adjustable Ohlins front & rear suspension and an Ohlins steering damper.  The motor is the same from the 996R with an extended crankcase sump for assured lubrication during hard riding.  The cosmetic features of this edition are the traditional badge on the triple-clamp, tricolor tail, and commemorative stickers on the tail and tank.  The asking price is $8,500.  The maintenance required for the R motor may be more but, I’d take the ultimate iteration of the 916 series over a base 848 or 999 of equal value.  See this 998S on Craigslist here.

quote from seller’s Craigslist posting:

This is another piece of rolling history, a 2007 Ducati Team USA Limited 999S Superbike. There were 150 of these bikes produced, all of them sold only in the USA. None were exported. This is the write up from Ducati on the stock version of the bike. The first service was just completed and the bike is ready to be ridden or put on display.
The 999s Team USA edition is closely designed and based on the race bikes used by both the Bostrom brothers and Neil Hodgeson during the 2005 and 2006 AMA Superbike seasons.

Ducati Xerox 999R #58

Ducati Xerox 999R #58

quote from seller’s Craigslist posting:

If you have not been to visit our warehouse, this Ducati Xerox 999R, #58 with 1387 miles, is another reason you should drop by soon. Another rare slice of modern motorcycle history is now being offered for sale at Automania. The 2006 999R XEROX Ducati Superbike is the customer homologation replica of Troy Bayliss’ FO6 World Superbike Championship Motorcycle that he used to dominate and win the 2006 WSB championship.
It has fundamentally the same specifications as the standard 999R but with the special XEROX badging and a few other mechanical differences

I’m really not knowledgable about the values of these bikes. But they are obviously collector examples that will command some premium in the market. Which one would you pick as best value?
