Motown – 2000 Bimota SB8R

Bimota was fighting its way back from the V-Due debacle and brought forward the SB8R, based on Suzuki's 996cc V-twin.  This example appears to have components from an SB8R Special, sporting all carbon bodywork and so even lighter.  It hails from an area more known for NASCAR but should be at home on any back road.

The WSBK Series was in Bimota's plans when their designers looked into the SB8R, and though that wasn't to be, the design is a smashing collaboration between the boutique frame and mass-market powertrain manufacturers.  The aluminum perimeter frame has carbon connectors and 137 hp on tap from the Suzuki engine.  Bimota's engineers tweaked the fuel injection with 59mm Marelli throttle bodies and underseat exhaust, resulting in a more SBK experience, as does the adjustable Paioli suspension.  Carbon fairing and carbon seat subframe lead to a ride 45 or so pounds lighter than the TL1000.

The owner hints that this is a race bike on its way back to road duty, and though there are no mirrors or signals, it looks way too nice to have ever actually done a race season.  Maybe a premium track day machine.  From the eBay auction:

Spectacular all carbon fiber bodywork steals the show at motorcycle gatherings.  The awesome intake sound through the huge snorkels is hard to describe and really enjoyable.

Starts, runs, rides perfectly.  Fantastic canyon or track day motorcycle.

Great ride due to its light weight (395 lbs dry),  fully dialed suspension, torquey TLR engine (though with Bimota's own EFI and throttle bodies), and awesome Arrow race exhaust note. Engine and transmission gone through with everything returned to stock configuration.

All new fluids and ready to go except needs new street tires -- pick per your preference. Carbon fiber clip on handle bars, special race rear set foot controls, Arrow carbon fiber racing mufflers. All the trick stuff that Bimota did on this design such as the self supporting carbon fiber subframe/tail, hybrid aluminum-carbon fiber main frame, mean intake snorkels, rear shock placement (forward for mass centralization)...

Even Laverda patron Francesco Tognon couldn't turn the tide at Bimota, after their WSBK sponsor bailed early in the season.  Revitalized in the early 2000's, the company has a new race team and a line of bespoke machines.  Very special but not in the giant killer way of the race-derived SB8R generation.  This auction has seven days to run and appears to have had a starting bid but no reserve.  Something to keep an eye on...

Lookalike – 2001 Ducati 996 with 2,057 miles !

For six out of the eight years Carl Fogarty rode Superbikes for Ducati, he either claimed the championship or came in second.  That sustained championship riding ( 1992-2000 with 1996 spent on Honda ) has led to countless sticker kits and many factory tributes.  This 996 has updated -S components and a race-look decal set, but more importantly has never been registered and spent most of its life on display.

Ducati updated the successful 916 in response to twins from Suzuki and Aprilia, keeping most of the package except for improvements in the power area - the 80 additional cc's helping deliver 122 hp and 69 ft.-lbs. torque.  Two fuel injectors per intake ensure outstanding response at WOT, but some mere mortals had the system modified to improved part-throttle running.  Brembo produced new and improved Gold Lines for the 996, and the -S had Öhlins adjustable dampers and Marchesini alloys.

 

Evidently a showroom display, this 996 barely has break-in miles and looks great except for needing a nice detail.  Beside the correct Öhlins and wheels, pair of Micron mufflers and Corbin seat are the main enhancements, and the race livery is a good likeness.  From the eBay auction:

This motorcycle is a former Ducati dealership owners personal motorcycle that has never been registered. Bike has only 2057 miles on it and is in excellent condition.  The motorcycle has carbon fiber Micron exhaust. Along with many other carbon fiber items. This bike has the dealer installed Fogarty decal kit. This can be removed for a non race bike look. All Ohlins suspension, including steering stabilizer.

 

No matter how low the mileage, cam belts, tires and fluids will have to be done, though deferring the valve clearances could be debated.  That's presuming that the next owner is a rider, which seems appropriate for the not super-rare 996.  If care is taken not to get stuck in traffic and over-tax the cooling system, the 996 with S updates can do more than look fast.  Though the starting bid is set high, it's certainly showable, and riding to the show would be the way to go...

Rev. 2.0 – 2003 Honda RVT1000R / RC51

Honda joined the V-twin WSBK fray in 2000 and Colin Edwards won the inaugural season on the RC51. The SP-2 was introduced in 2002 and incorporated many lessons learned the first two years. Almost every aspect of the machine was improved, with a little more power and less weight. This example has been hiding in Queens, New York and shows only 2,295 miles.

With the general layout of its nemesis, the RVT-1000R used a nicely oversquare 996cc twin, with the SP-2's whopping 62mm throttle bodies helping Honda stay on the right side of WSBK rules and deliver 136 hp.  Steering head angle was reduced to sharpen handling, and the swingarm from Edwards' racing machine was put into production with a loss of two pounds of unsprung weight.  Parts that were merely advanced were redesigned and lightened where possible, like fairing stays, alloy seat subframe, and ram-air intake which doubles as a fairing support.

This RC51's New York owner has taken nice care and made a few choice upgrades.  The Sato exhaust alone saves 10 lbs. and has been dyno-tuned.  Limited photos so an in-person inspection will be a must.  From the eBay auction:

This bike runs great with no problems or lights on and is extremely powerful.  The bike was put on a dyno machine and tuned perfectly.  The plastics are in great condition with some light scratches too the decals and a scuff mark on the front brake lever.  Never been in any accidents or stunted or abused in any way.  Always babied.  Through out the years I added all the upgrades.  This bike comes with ultra rare Sato Racing titanium exhaust, power commander, K&N air filters, CRG levers, black tinted windscreen, Sargent gel seat, PIAA bulbs, yellow high beam, Proton front turn signals, Michelin Pilot Power tires (like new condition) Pro Grip hand grips, Hot Bodies under tail and tire hugger, axle mounted LP bracket, new battery.  The bike has low miles but may go up because I ride it now and then.  This bike also comes with but not pictured the OEM bike manual, factory tool kit, OEM factory repair manual in binder, results from dyno machine.

 

Edwards went on to take WSBK in 2002 as well, and a Kentucky upstart won the AMA Superbikes on RC51 race number 69.  But the wind direction changed abruptly when FIM changed the rules to allow 1000cc fours, and Honda returned to their successful formula.  With just a few thousand produced each year, the RC51 isn't super-limited, but also not mass-produced.  The SP-2's many improvements make it the one to have if you're a fan.  And for an almost fifteen year-old motorcycle, the low miles and adult ownership make this RVT-1000R look even better...

Spec-ial-ity – 2006 Bimota SB8K Santamonica with Under 1,000 miles !

Even among specialty manufacturers like Bimota there are favorites, where performance and style have somehow met in a synchronicity better than other models.  The SB8K is one such example, the first bike produced after the company was resuscitated in the early 2000's.  The fresh design, techniques, and materials were spot-on and even resulted in a couple of WSBK race wins.

Using the 996cc Suzuki TL-1000 mill, Bimota engineered their own and intakes and a moving fuel injector system which optimized the fuel delivery position relative to the throttle butterfly.  The resulting 143 hp had the big twin's wide torque band and was packaged in a lighter hybrid frame with aluminum beams and carbon fiber connectors.  The body and fuel tank were also carbon, finished to a level usually only seen on Bimota's billet aluminum components.  Oversize Öhlins forks are fully adjustable, as is the rear monoshock.  Radially mounted Brembo brakes, OZ wheels, and Termignoni exhaust complete the picture.

As you might expect from a bike with under 1,000 miles, things are stock and very clean.  Shouldn't be any maintenance issues with the hybrid chain and gear cam drive.  Likely the new owner could change the fluids and rubber and ride away.  From the eBay auction:

This bike has spent most of its life in living rooms, 866 miles. 

(kilometers shown in picture) Beautiful near perfect bike, built with a profusion of light alloys and carbon fibre.  Many parts meticulously machined from aluminum alloy.  The motor was taken from the Suzuki TL1000R and has been highly tuned by engineers to deliver more output and torque at all engine speeds.  The SB8K is the only production bike in the world to use Bimota's very own Radial Injection.  Some paint chipping by titanium panel chips on side fairings,(easily touched up) and some small scratches on lower fairing under bike, I assume from loading (not visible unless fairing is removed).  Runs perfect, pulls like a freight train.  Carbon fibre everything including parts of the frame, Has OZ Wheels, Ohlin struts and shocks, Brembo Monobloc calipers, 385 lbs. 134 horsepower!

The SB8K reviewed as a big machine, but sharp, with light weight and handling, and hard suspension.  Bimota's tune camouflages the Suzuki engine, and power delivery is linear.  The rarity and low miles will probably keep this Santamonica on display, but it could be pressed into service at any time.  Named for the Superbike World Championship track in Rimini, Italy ( and not the West Hollywood suburb ) the Santamonica was a great re-start for Bimota, and a great oughties exotic...

Featured Listing – 2004 Ducati Monster S4R

"Born" in 1993, the Ducati Monster has regularly been credited with starting the naked bike craze, and occasionally has accounted for two thirds of Ducati sales.  A citified workhorse for most of the first decade, special higher performance models began to surface in the early 2000's.  The 2004 S4R undressed the water-cooled 996cc desmoquattro, baring most all the superbike had to offer.  This Dallas-based S4R has been groomed for success by the second owner.

 

In spite of all the reasons an air-cooled desmodue is sensible and beautiful, the complex plumbing exercise that the is the S4R is exciting in a more technical way.  Curved radiators for water and oil, their respective pumps and pipes, the hydraulic dry clutch, three big brake disks, all state their case.  Larger scale are the 43mm upside-down forks and monoshock from Showa, the latter connected to an aluminum single-sided swingarm reminiscent of the MH900E.  Carbon covers smooth over the side panels, cam belts, chin scoop, and mufflers on the two-into-two exhaust.

 

The Texas owner has shepherded this special Monster through mid-life, heavy maintenance done and improvements made.  With all the farkels, there's too much to list ( ! ) in the eBay auction, but here is the general part :

-Last year for the metal fuel tank (no swelling, but I still run ethanol stabilizer when not ridden for extended periods of time)
-Full Desmo service performed right at 14,000 by AMS Ducati in Dallas,TX . New timing belts, valve service, throttle body sync, oil change (with correct Shell Advance 4T oil), and new battery.
-Rear hub assembly was replaced during the Desmo service as the chain tensioner on the original had excessive wear. Rear wheel was re-powdercoated after this due to grease that had stained the original finish. The color match is perfect, and I installed the correct Marchesini decals.
-Pirelli Angel GT tires (120 Front, 180 rear) are relatively new. Installed by second owner before I purchased the bike. Unknown exact mileage, but I've only put 2000 miles on them. I always run the recommended pressure of 31.2 front and 31.9 psi rear)
-Radiator was replaced by the previous owner with a brand new unit (KTM 45360). These come from the factory in black, so I stripped all the paint from it, and painted the end tanks silver for a perfect match to the oil cooler. Bike holds 170-180°F during normal riding. I never saw above 188°F at the track.
-Pre-wired for Battery Tenders (again, used when not ridden for extended periods of time)
-Newer factory grips
-Brake pads still have plenty of life. Newer chain and rear sprocket. Lubricated regularly.
-Recently greased the friction plates for smoother clutch modulation.
-Black key, red key, and code card included.

 

Better suited to the suburbs than the city, the water-cooled Monsters crave the open road and reward their riders with gobs of torque as well as the wide open feel.  Super clean and seeming to need nothing, this S4R is ready to show off everything a Monster could be.  Check the auction and contact the owner through eBay - here -.

Blue By You – 2005 Ducati Monster S4R

Usually a contrasting silver or gold color, the frame on the oughties' Monster S4R is body color.  Generally seen in red with red frame or blue with same, the S4R incorporated the 996 water-cooler into the naked concept.  With premium components, the 113 hp Monster is one heck of a way to get around town.

Even the grocery-getter side of the showroom has their flagship and the S4R was it in the early 2000's.  The ultimate Monster is adorned with all manner of glam but didn't forget the basics - 996 cc's of water-cooled desmoquattro.  Nice torque number of 70 ft.-lbs. peaks at a usable 7,000 rpm.  Suspension is all Showa, fully adjustable with upside-down forks and single-sided swingarm.  Two-into-two exhaust passes through a catalyst on its way.  Hiding the 996 plumbing on a Monster is impossible, but this owner has made a go of it with carbon radiator shroud and chin scoop, complementing the factory's carbon fenders and timing belt covers.

 

Presented by an eBayer with an eclectic sports focus,  this Monster has just under 10,000 miles, quite a few brand-name updates, and appears to have missed any major life events.  Of interest are the Arrow exhaust tuned by ECU and Power Commander, Rizoma handlebar, new battery, and valve adjustment last spring.  The dented tank might be addressed by a paintless dent magician, and the cracked tail cone should be an easy fix or replace.  Carbon fiber mufflers are balanced by a carbon bikini fairing, and there are a lot of farkles described in the eBay auction:

With just a couple of knocks over the years, this S4R looks ready for a little TLC and the rest of the summer.  Reviewers thought the S4R was a handful in stop-and-go traffic, but the drivetrain was a joy in the suburbs.  The buy-it-now is fairly optimistic but there are many watchers, and the make offer button is ready...
