I know I personally never get tired of seeing 888′s and like Jay said yesterday “when you are looking to buy one they aren’t available, but when you aren’t looking they are everywhere” Okay, so that wasn’t exactly what he said, but it was something to that effect. This one is perhaps a little more special than either of Jay’s, but only because I’m posting it this time around.. (hehe, sorry Jay) I’ve checked RSBFS archives and couldn’t find where this one had been posted before so here we go.

Located in Los Angles, CA is this 888 with 11,559 on the clock. This one has a laundry list of additions so read on.

Now what I think is absolutely amazing, that hasn’t been mentioned yet, is that with this bike you get all of the stock parts that were replaced in lieu of the aftermarket one. That is worth a whole lot in my book.

So- per the seller:

Returning this bike to 100% stock would be a strictly bolt on proposition, if that was your intention. The key is that virtually all of the original parts come with the bike.

Now before you start clambering around for your check book or paypal password it should be noted that there’s no mention of maintenance on the sellers ad. Almost forgot, there is one other special thing about this sale.

the original Brembo wheels with the original (virtually unused) Michelin Hi-Sport tires still on them!

Beat that for a 17 year old Superbike!

Well I’m back again talking about 888′s, seems like these things come in cycles, when you want to buy one there never around, then when you don’t, there everywhere. It’s one of my favorite Ducati’s and their best performer until the 916 came out. LTD’s or “Limited” were the last 888′s produced for the street but not a whole lot different from the regular 888 SPO ‘s other than some carbon bits and a few other misc cosmetic items. In ’93/’94 you could also buy for racing their SP4 and SP5 versions which were basically copies of the bike they raced in World Superbike. Ducati offered so many “trick” bits for these bikes and at the time Fast By Ferracci Ducati was at the top of their game for racing and tuning  here in the US. Their presence at each AMA Superbike event was just about on par with Ferrari’s F1 efforts.  Located in Frankfort IL, here’s a pretty nice example on EBay, click to view.

12,000 mile service done 4/30/08, including valve adjustment & timing belts.

I believe I am the 3rd owner.  The only mods I am aware of are the rear sets & a Corbin seat.

There are small areas of chipped paint on the lips of the fairings where your toes would hit when feet are on the footpegs. These were present when bought & I have added a couple.  There is also a crack on the underside of the right fairing which has been repaired & is not visible on the outside, also on pics.  Always garaged & never dropped while in my posession.

There are no mechanical issues whatsoever.  I am selling the bike because my back arthritis cannot tolerate the riding position.

The bike is for sale locally so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time.

Will deliver within 100 miles of the Chicago Metro area in an enclosed trailer

Conclusion;  these things give me major “wood”. This one seems to be a really nice clean example for the miles and maybe with a bit of paintwork, a set of stock rear sets, the bike would really shine in my opinion. If you wanted major “Starbuck” posing points try to locate a set of Termignoni carbon cans to finish it off. Keep checking this sale and see where the price goes, it could be one hell of a deal.

#61 is said to have 13,000 on the clock, is 99% Red-n-Ready and priced at $8,800.00. Since I started authoring on RSBFS.com I have been exposed to a whole lot of bikes that in the past I would have ignored. The 916 used to rank at the top of my personal Ducati fav’s list, but has since been replaced by the 888. That’s right I like the 888 SPO’s better than any other Ducati that has ever been offered. I assume that I am not alone in my thoughts on this one and the odd thing about it is that I can’t even tell you why I like them. Maybe it’s the old school thought of something being labored over by craftsmen or the thoughts of Doug Polen winning races. Whatever the case may be for me it shouldn’t distract you from this one.

The seller didn’t have much to say about his special production Ducati, but I found a nice article where someone was quoting Ian Falloon

The 1994 version differed in details only with the change of color to the colors mentioned above and it got a carbon fiber front fender and the larger diameter front axle. It also got a number plaque.
The SPO was an amalgam of the Strada and the SP5 and was made because the SP5 could not meet US DOT requirements mostly the noise regulations. The motor was identical to the Strada but it shared many chassis components with the SP5. It had the stainless steel, round hole, front brake rotors and Showa forks from the Strada but the Monoposto seat, Ohlins rear shock with eccentric ride height adjuster and the up swept pipes. It did not have the aluminum sub frame for the seat. Numbers of bikes made was a little bit of a surprise for me, there are a lot more of these bikes out there than I envisioned, still relatively limited but more than I expected. I will not separate out the US models with 49 state versus the California models and the same for the rest of the world I will not separate out the different countries.

The SPO engine was identical to that of the 888 Strada, but many chassis components were shared with the SP5.The stainless-steel front discs and Showa fork were shared with the 888 Strada, but the SPO had a single seat, upswept exhaust pipes, and an Ohlins shock absorber with eccentric ride height adjustment. Even though it was a Monoposto, there wasn’t an aluminum rear subframe as on other Sport Production models.

Doug posted one of these SPO’s with 13,696mi for $8,900 just less than two weeks ago and it can be seen here.  The asking price for this example seems to be a very fair $7,000 in comparison.  This bike looks to be in perfect, original and unmodified condition.  If you’re looking for art that you can take out on the town and into the back-roads, see this SPO on Craigslist here.

We haven’t posted one of these in a while and since these are a favorite of The Big Boss Man I thought I would throw it up for him and everyone else to enjoy. The seller doesn’t say a whole lot about the bike other than it being professionally maintained. The bike looks clean, appears to be all stock and with the decent mileage it should make for a great weekend warrior.

Update 1.20.10: I got another update from Rory, and he tells me the RC45 and 888 are both sold now.

We’ve been a bit surprised by the great response through your site and been scrambling a bit to keep up with the inquiries. Invariably, people have been asking for details on bikes that we haven’t pulled out of storage to work on. And, as you already know, a real enthusiast from the East Coast struck a deal for 5 of the bikes, redirecting our focus for a time. A fellow drove up from LA on Christmas Eve to take the Ducati F1, and we have someone coming from Reno today to look at the Honda RC45.

We’ve at least rolled all the remaining bikes out to take photos and determine general condition and mileage. Anyone can contact us directly for more info.

Here is what is remaining as of January 5th:

’04 Benelli Tornado Tre – This bike has only 2 miles showing on the odometer and looks as though it has never been on the road.

’00 MV F4 – 426 miles The VIN# on this bike ends with 100000. While we can’t be absolutely sure, I spoke with someone at MV USA who believes that this probably the first F4 in the country.

’98 Ducati 916 SPS – 6059 miles. I’ve ridden this one around the block – great bike.

’93 Ducati 888 SPO – 2031 miles. Next on our list to get running.

’06 Yamaha R1 Rossi replica – 17 miles.

’06 Yamaha R1 Special Edition – 0 miles. No photo, but it’s the traditional Yamaha yellow and black paint scheme.

’99 Yamaha R7 OW02 – 3646 km.

’94 Honda RC45 – 3718 miles. Has two 1” diameter paint scuffs on side and rear panels but otherwise good shape. This bike is running now.

’72 Norton 810 Dunstall – 1983 miles. A very nice example and also now running.

I know we’ve had several SP’s recently, but here is another one for everyone to drool over. 

• 1996 Ducati 900SS SP # 973 0f 1000 made. Bike is showroom mint with only 5451 miles.   Always stored in a heated garage.
• All steel braided lines for brakes and clutch.
• Brand new Pirelli Corsa tires.
• Micron exhaust.
• K&N modified air box.
• New mikuni carbs with stage one jet kit.
• Black hollow spoke Brembo wheels.
• Oil cooling jets for pistons.
• Full floating front brakes.
• I have the factory exhaust the tools and stands all included in auction.

 
This one has a very low 5451 on the clock and has some very nice mods.  I am particularly fond of the black Brembo wheels on this one.  The seller has saved the stock parts, tool kit and rear stand which is always nice when considering a purchase of a limited production bike.  At $9,250 it seems to be a fair price, but having just completed a check of previous 900SS posts on RSBFS they might be hanging on this one for a while.  It seems the market won’t support the asking prices of most SP owners.  I’ve seen several stall around 5 – 6k this year.
