Featured Listing: 1993 Suzuki GSXR400

The smallest Gixxer led a long and fruitful life of bringing young riders into the motorcycling fray, riding the wave of 400cc popularity that swelled, crested and broke in the 1990s. Like most Japanese four-stroke 400s, it had an aluminum frame, a screaming inline four that made around 60 horsepower and aped the looks of its bigger stablemate.

Despite all that, the little Gixxers were never as popular as their competitors, with reviewers bemoaning somewhat primitive chassis and a peaky engine, even by 400 standards.

But today, they are as eagerly sought after by collectors as any of the 400 sport bikes, in part because they are quite rare. The 1993 Suzuki GSXR400 here is a well cared-for, low-mile example that spent much of its life in the hands of a collector in Japan, before coming into the collection of our buddy Gary.

With the exception of some spots on the wheels and a little pitting here and there, this one looks much newer than even its scant 8,000 miles would suggest. The fairings show no cracks or blemishes, and it is titled and ready to ride.

Up for auction is a premium example of a 1993 Suzuki GSXR400 with only 12,903 kilometers (8,018 miles). This GSXR is almost museum quality. This is a bike you want in your collection. Bike is perfect in every way. The only issue is a tiny rock chip in the paint on the left upper side of the fuel tank and some tiny light scratches on the left rear cowling. Bike is solid and looks very well cared for. Bike appears to have never been crashed or dropped. Super low miles. Purchased from a collector in Japan. Bike has aftermarket exhaust and full flow carb intakes. Runs very smooth and revs like a raped ape. Full service just performed with a new battery, new fluids and new Michelin Pilot’s front and rear. This bike won’t disappoint.

Rare Duck: 1986 Ducati 400 F3 for Sale

The stories of our favorite motorcycle manufacturers are often littered with failures and bankruptcy. Some brands even saw multiple deaths, followed by zombie-like resurrections where the victim simply came back wrong, like Gage from Pet Sematary… Truly, “Sometimes dead is better…” Luckily, Italian purveyor of accessible exotics Ducati seems pretty stable these days, rumored purchase by Harley Davidson notwithstanding. But it wasn’t always that way, and today’s Ducati 400 F3 represents a rare collectible from a transitional era of their history when they teetered on the edge of failure.

Designed before Ducati was taken over by Cagiva but produced during their ownership, it was styled to resemble the successful TT race bikes of the late 70s and early 80s. The 750 F1 and lookalike F3 used Ducati’s signature trellis frame developed by Verlicchi and wrapped around the company’s two-valve, air and oil-cooled Pantah engine. In this application the v-twin had yet to have the rear cylinder rotated 180° to situate both carburetors together in the engine’s vee as seen in the later SS and Monsters, so you can see the rear velocity stack/filter sticking out in the breeze, where it probably interferes with the rider’s leg but hey, it’s a Ducati!

And that was really the problem with the F1/F3 to begin with: build quality was generally pretty poor, more kit-bike than the product of a major motorcycle manufacturer, and the suspension was crude. But the elements were there to make a great bike, it just needed a bit of development… It was almost as if Ducati assumed buyers intended to race them, and didn’t bother finishing them. Today's F3 was a Japanese market version of the F1 with a smaller, 400cc displacement. The seller suggests that it may be the only example in the USA and certainly, I can't remember seeing one for sale here. It's had a cosmetic restoration, but is otherwise in original condition.

VERY RARE and might be the only one of these models in the USA.

Japan was one of the biggest markets for Ducati in the 1980s but limited motorcycles to only 400 cc, so smaller versions of the Ducati 750F1 were sold there as the Ducati 400F3 from 1986-88. This 1986 Ducati 400F3 with only 7657 km (4758 miles) was imported from Japan in 2016. 

The paint on the bike was badly faded and the complete bike was torn down and frame and complete bodywork were repainted (powder coating on the frame).  All decals are factory correct decals for this year model.

A Limited run of 509 Ducati 400 F3 bikes were built in 1986 and this bike is number 209 (VIN ZDM400R*400209) and is shown on a numbered factory plaque fitted to the top of the seat fairing, see picture.

The bike is in very good running condition and include:

  • New steering bearings
  • New petcocks

Obviously, a two-valve, 400cc v-twin isn't going to be particularly fast, but I doubt anyone considering a purchase will seriously care. This is a bit of history, a collectible. The lookalike 750 F1 has experienced a serious spike in value the past few years. Although the smaller-engined F3 won't offer the same performance, it should represent a solid investment as it is very rare, especially here in the USA, although bidding is very low so far, at just over $4,0000 with the Reserve Not Met.

This 1996 Honda RVF400R from featured seller Glenn is from the model's last year of production, and wears a distinctly '90s livery on fairings that are just slightly sharper than its predecessor, the VFR400R. The RVF also got upside-down forks and CBR900RR-aping foxeye headlights when it debuted in '94.

Sold new only in Japan, the RVF was a wholly-updated machine that was praised at the time for sharp handling and flickability, a common thread among sports 400s. Aside from the updated forks, Honda changed frame geometry, the engine mounting position, added a slightly narrower single-sided swingarm and upgraded the new bike to a 17-inch rear wheel to aid turn-in, a change which will also make finding modern tires a non-issue.

Between the frame rails sat an engine with re-thought carburetors and new valve timing. As with every 400cc sportbike out there, the engine doesn't shine until it's really spinning, eventually spitting out just shy of 60 horses at 13,500 rpm.

The bike featured here looks clean enough to eat off of, but the seller notes a few spots of touch-up paint and a replacement decal or two. Mechanically, this RVF is pretty close to sorted, with freshly-cleaned carbs and fluids flushed. The chain and sprockets are tired, according to the seller, and the tires look OK, but are a few years old.

1996 Honda RVF400 NC35, the bike has a clean and clear Arizona title with current registration. It has original Japanese 11 digit VIN, so no California registration but ok elsewhere. Bike is currently located in So Cal, but can be available for pickup/delivery in Phoenix area if needed.

the classic 90's Honda's. 360 degree crank, gear driven cams, V4, single sided swingarm. Only sold in Japan.

This is a nice lower mile stock example. I have a few NC35 and NC30 projects but when I bought this bike it was as it sits now. I only

just recently did a complete service on it, oil change, coolant flush and fill, fresh synthetic DOT4 front and rear brake fluid and completely tore the carbs down and did a thorough cleaning.

The bike has had some touch up paint work done in the past before I bought it and it looks good. Bodywork is OEM original Honda, most decals original some reproduction and repainted, some touch up paint work on engine and a few other bits, but overall looks nice, seats were recovered. Rear sets are factory, but pegs aftermarket. I have a new set of Tyga rearsets I will sell for a pretty good deal if new owner wants them! Please look at the photos closely, if you need

Runs great, low miles, nice fueling and handles beautiful, great brakes. Everything works as it should, all lighting, switchgear etc etc. Tires are a few years old but decent, chain and sprocket should be replaced, other than that it just had a full service so really needs nothing.

There is a lot of info online about the NC30 and 35, parts are pretty easy to source and plentiful, great aftermarket options from Tyga and others. This bike will make a great rider, lots of fun at trackdays and is quite collectible, not many around, Honda made few of them compared to the NC30 and not a lot of nice survivors today. Don't miss this chance to get a nice titled NC35!!

In the pantheon of 400cc sportbikes, a lightweight, rev-happy segment of rippers designed to help aspiring knee draggers stay within foreign tiered-licensing guidelines, the Kawasaki ZXR400 stood out as a hard-edged race replica writ small. The baby brother of the world-class ZX-7 superbike, the ZXR400 turned its tiny displacement and diminutive weight into an advantage.

With 61 horses on tap for the '89 model year and a sub-400-pound dry weight, the mini Kawi was quick to make fools of detractors. Though capable of the big end of 140 mph, the engine needed revs to make power, and the bike rewarded momentum and bravery with sharp high-speed handling. Reviewers at the time remarked that the precise handling was paid for with a cramped riding position and a harsh ride, but nobody seriously shopping for a 400 should expect the lap of luxury.

The low-mileage example listed here is in excellent shape and will make a beautiful rider, though it carries blemishes commensurate with its years. Tires, too, look like they could use freshening. Bidding is currently below $2,000, but the reserve remains unmet, and if the 1995 example from earlier this month is anything to go on, the winning bid will be well north of the current ask.

Up for auction is a rarely seen 1989 Kawasaki ZXR400 with only 6,140 kilometers (3815 miles). Its 100% stock. OEM Kawasaki fairings and components in very nice condition. The right lower fairing has been professionally resprayed because of light stress cracks (spider webbing) in the clear coat from age. Bike has light handling marks & scratches throughout from its 28 year ride thru life but overall very clean. No cracks in the fairings, no dents in the tank. Its been very well taken care of. Bike shows patina and light corrosion here and there from time but has very good curb appeal. This bike would make an excellent candidate for a full restoration. Bike comes with Utah state title and is titled as a street motorcycle for road use.

While the weight and 14,500 rpm redline might not be super impressive when compared to current sportbike offerings, the ZXR occupies an important chapter of motorcycling history, and is rare enough in this country to stop bike-night enthusiasts in their tracks and embarrass bigger-displacement bikes under less seasoned riders.

Hidden Away Handler – 1989 Yamaha FZR-400

Wheeled to the back of a collection after only 962 miles, this lightweight Yamaha four-stroke could easily be returned to riding status.  The only really sporting four-stroke 400 imported to the States, of the underwhelming total sales here, many were raced and subject to engine transplants.  Showing a serious mid-size buy-it-now, this is a bike any rider could enjoy, and a highly skilled rider could enjoy it immensely.

In stock trim, the almost pint-size 399 cc's provide 60 hp, mostly between 8,000-14,000 rpm.  Below the power band it's perfect around town.  Above 8,000 the over-engineered DeltaBox frame provides a stable platform with 41mm conventional forks and rear monoshock.  Brakes are dual front 298mm disks with 210mm rear.  Wheels are different sizes to aid handling, 18-inch rear following a 17-inch front.  Classic red-white paint grabs attention for the endurance-styled fairing.

Presented by a serious collector, this FZR doesn't look to have suffered the usual collateral damage from storage wars - from the eBay auction:

Absolutely MINT 1989 Yamaha FZR400. This may be the finest one in the US.

Premium motorcycle, premium price reflecting its condition and the extra swingarm. All original, no modifications. Never dropped, raced, crashed or otherwise damaged. It's been sitting in an enclosed storage unit or my garage since I purchased it two years ago.
 
Comes with buffed 1990 FZR400 swingarm for the perfect combination of a virtually new FZR400 with the later Deltabox swingarm. 
 
One tiny rock chip in upper left headlight fairing. Front master cylinder sticks from lack of use. I've discounted the price by $200 to cover the minor repair. The carbs need cleaning.

Imported only 1988-90, the premium-priced FZR-400 was a tough sell next to the new 600.  Continental riders had a choice of Kawasaki and Honda small sports, but beautiful engineering and build quality couldn't protect the exchange rate and pre-EXUP power specs for long.  These long-past corporate missteps now ensure rarity, especially for a stock peach as displayed here.  Riding like a larger sportbike, the performance envelope of the FZR-400 is wider and more accessible to more riders.  Just a carb cleaning, new rubber, and tune-up stand in the way of this great ride, oh you'll also have to get past ( over ? ) the display stand...

The 400cc Honda NC30 has long lived in the shadow of its bigger brother. Not particularly fast, but definitely expensive then and now, there's certainly a lot to like about the VFR400, but outright speed isn't really on the list. Instead, you're looking at Honda's famously sophisticated engineering: straight-cut gears when a common chain would do, a tiny V4 when any sane manufacturer would simply build an inline four and be done with it. An ELF-designed "Pro-Arm" single-sided swingarm that was cool enough to be aped by Ducati's iconic 916 and aided fast rear wheel changes during endurance racing.

It's very light for a four-stroke at 350lbs dry, with adequate power from the 399cc V4: 59hp and 30ft-lbs of torque in a wide, forgiving powerband that extended all the way to a screaming 14,000rpm. Early V4s used an even-firing 180° crank, whereas later versions like the one here used a 360° "big bang" crank and firing order for improved traction and tire life, the theory being that the combustion events happening close together allowed the tire to "recover" during the gap in each revolution.

Ridden in isolation, the NC30 a joy, a sweet-handling machine that rewards a skilled rider. Ridden against bikes that cost less new but offered more than twice the displacement, and the little V4 gets murdered in nearly any measurable test. That and the lack of real racing pedigree means that the NC30 may be slower, but it's also much less expensive than the bigger RC30, making it a realistic prospect for folks who want the Honda V4 experience but are on a limited budget.

Rare 1990 Honda NC-30, VFR 400 with a clean, clear NO BS California title and registration... It's for the correct VIN, the correct year, no funny business like you will find on a lot of grey market bikes.

This bike was imported from Japan a little over a year ago, I've had it 6 or 7 months. I've put a 1000 or so miles it her, rode her to work for a month and we've visited the canyons a couple of times. I bought her because I'm a V4 junkie, I own 4 right now.

It shows 63,489 kilometers (39,450 miles). I can say it doesn't look or feel like it has that many miles, maybe it had the gauges replaced... who knows. The bike is mostly stock, the only aftermarket parts I see are brake lines, horn and current bodywork. Judging by the original bodywork and muffler I'd say she has been down at slow is speeds a time or two, but nothing major. She rides straight, true, smooth and fast. Only bike I've ever gone faster than the speedo will go (180KPH only 11k RPM). This bike has no limiter or funny Japanese market speed controllers.

A bunch of time, effort and money have gone into cleaning this girl up.

All the fluids have been replaced, a few stock parts have been replace with OEM Honda (like levers, hardware, bar ends and such) the buyer gets all of the take off parts (original bodywork, hardware, levers and such), fresh brake pads, a bunch of stainless hardware, fresh looking chain and sprockets, fresh paint on the tank. I got her with low mileage Dunlops. I installed a Chinese bodywork kit from Ebay, it looks pretty good, I took my time installing it.

Is she perfect, NO (If she was the price would be over $10k), she is very good, needs nothing to be a daily rider. Are there things that could be done to make her better, sure... but that is up to you.

Asking price is $8000 obo, might trade up or down for something equally cool. You aren't Richard Rawlings, this isn't a Television show... Don't make a crazy low offer or tell me the bike isn't worth that much...

The NC30 are very rare here in the US where they were never officially sold, although these are much less valuable than the bigger RC30 with which it shares style and specification, if not displacement.  One look at the dinged exhaust and the mileage will tell you this is no trailer queen! But the bike looks very clean and well-maintained, with none of the bolt-on frippery sometimes found on bikes of this vintage. It's a rider, for Honda fans who might otherwise not be able to afford one of the more perfectly-preserved examples of Honda's V4 homologation specials.
