Featured Listing: 1987 Yamaha TZR250 for Sale

Today's Featured Listing Yamaha TZR250 comes to us from our neighbors to the north in Canada. This 1KT/2MA/2ME was the very first iteration of Yamaha's little sportbike, and helped to define the 250cc class. If you're not familiar, these little quarter-liter sportbikes were packed with big-bike technology. In the US market, a 250 was an economical commuter, a learner bike, or a dirt bike. But overseas,  tiered licensing and heavy taxes on larger displacements meant many young and enthusiastic riders were simply unable to buy "big" bikes. You know, like a 600cc supersport... So the class that included the NSR, RGV, KR, and today's TZR have all the development and even better handling than many of their bigger-engined counterparts.

The TZR was the follow up to Yamaha's RD line of two-stroke sporting motorcycles, but added liquid-cooling to the 250cc parallel twin and an extra gear in the gearbox for a total of six speeds. Yamaha's YPVS power valve added midrange to help plump up the compact engine's claimed 50hp. The beam frame was made from lightweight aluminum and 17" wheels were fitted at both ends meant impressive handling. A single disc brake up front may seem low-tech for a sportbike, but the bike stops just fine with this set up, considering the 282lb dry weight and I'm sure things would be improved with some modern compound pads.

1987 Yamaha TZR250 2ME Canadian Bike.

One of very few originally from the Canadian Market. Very clean and well running bike. Motor rebuilt less than a thousand KMs ago along with fresh paint and powder coated wheels. Alberta registered 2017. Bike is well sorted and in excellent condition. Does not suffer from corrosion issues seen on Japanese imports. Will continue to be ridden. This came to me as a mostly complete motorcycle that appeared well cared for and is NOT a parts bin special.

The TZR is essentially a 2/3 size RZ350 with a proper modern aluminum spar frame. It handles incredibly well and is a ton of fun to ride. Light, nimble and quick. The most fun motorcycle I have ridden which includes RZs, RDs, Kawasaki Triples and NS400Rs.

Completed around 35,000km:

-New paint and reproduction decals (clear coated decals)
-Powder coated rims (more modern white compared to original red)
-Tires in good shape
-Rebuilt motor
-JDM taillights
-Aftermarket pipes with Aprilia RS250 carbon silencers

This bike is currently in Calgary, Alberta and the seller claims that it is an original Canadian-market bike, not a grey-market Japanese import. Asking price is $5,200 USD, which is a very nice price, considering how desirable these small displacement two-strokes are at the moment. Miles are on the high side, but the motor has been recently rebuilt, and the bike appears to otherwise have been well-maintained. Assuming it's been carefully stored, that should mean less of the surface corrosion and general fading that seems to be common on examples that have been recently imported from Japan. The paint isn't completely original, but OEM plastics were used and, unless you're a stickler for a perfectly-preserved, factory-fresh collectible, I'd bet you'd be hard-pressed to find a nicer example to actually ride in North America.

Smoke ‘Em if Ya Got ‘Em: Arizona-Titled 1987 Yamaha TZR250 for Sale

You know, it gets harder and harder to come up with smoking-related titles for these two-stroke posts... We may no longer allow tobacco companies to advertise in racing, but it seems to be a natural fit, considering the dangers involved in both activities and especially in the case of smoky, environmentally-unfriendly two-stroke machines. It's also hard to argue that the tobacco companies didn't come up with some of the best-looking graphics and color combinations of all time: Rothmans, John Player, and Marlboro as seen on today's Yamaha TZR250.

A follow up to the very successful RD line, the TZR250 1KT was the very first generation of Yamaha's liquid-cooled parallel twin sports machine introduced in 1986, and was also referred to as the "2MA," depending on the market. It was definitely a big jump ahead in terms of performance compared to the RG250 and NS250R of the same period, and pretty much set the template for the class: aluminum beam frame, fully-enclosed bodywork, and a six-speed gearbox. Unlike other bikes in the class and even the later TZRs that used an 18" rear wheel, the 1KT had 17" wheels at both ends.

Of course no quarter-liter two-stroke would be complete without some form of powervalve, and the TZR came with Yamaha's YPVS or "Yamaha Power Valve System" that helped to boost midrange performance. The claimed 50hp from this model may be a bit optimistic, but the 282lb dry machine was certainly light and very nimble.

This is a nice example of an early TZR. If you have been looking for an RZ350 or something similar check out the TZR250 1KT, feels somewhere in between a 125 and a 250 yet has around 50 HP, the very reliable parallel twin engine and awesome handling. I imported this bike in 2015 and it was a nice lower mile example but with some paint issues. I just had the entire bike repainted in a Wayne Rainey-esque Marlboro paint scheme and I think it came out pretty good. Stock colors were normal Yamaha red/white (see stock photos for reference).This bike will make a nice rider, it is not a showroom example however it is a low mile survivor with little corrosion, all original factory bodywork and new paint. Few of any 1KT TZR's survive in very good condition. Mechanically the bike is solid. 

I did a full service on it less than 20 miles ago. Fresh 50/50 coolant, Motorex Synthetic trans oil, fresh brake flush and fluid front and rear and synthetic DOT 4. Has Motul 710 synthetic two stroke oil and oil injection in place. If you plan to do any really spirited riding I would put fresh rubber on it. Wheels are original, I had planned to powdercoat them but they were borderline nice enough to keep factory original.

The bike is 100% stock save for a Daytona fork brace. Starts with 1 or 2 kicks every time. It runs very good, pulls clean to redline, rides straight, stops straight. It has signs of being dropped on the right in the past but no major damage, just rash which is till evident on clutch cover and brake master.  There is an unfortunate crack on the left ear of the upper which happened when I had the bodywork shipped back to me, but the upper stay and windscreen along with mirror keeps everything tight, solid and in place. There is some light corrosion on top nut, fork lowers, rotor etc but nothing terrible and teh frame is very nice...especially for being 30 years old. This is an overall nice example. 10,700 Km or roughly 6,650 original miles.

I have a set of Japanese Noguchi expansion chambers with silencers that will fit the bike (or the TDR I have listed) that I will sell for $550. I also have another set of 1KT stock exhaust that can go with the bike as well if wanted. Overall it is a really fun and good looking TZR that will draw a crowd wherever you ride it, please check out the pictures closely, contact me with any questions or if you need more photos OF ANY PART OF THE BIKE!

This example isn't perfect or original, but the seller is very up-front about that and the bike seems honestly represented. Bidding is up over $3,700 with a full week left on the auction. Values of 250cc sportbikes have been headed steadily upward over the past year, although TZRs have trailed the rest of the pack a bit, especially the 1KT. The seller's $6,200 Buy It Now price is right on the money for a good two-stroke, but it remains to be seen how the aftermarket paint will affect values of this particular bike.

Japanese Spec: 1986 Yamaha TZR250

After a brief interlude, welcome back to the meat and potatoes of RSBFS programming; a tasty two stroke import. This particular TZR250 is actually a pre-import - in that it is currently still located in Japan. The seller outlines the documentation and services they will provide with the sale below. Given that we have seen legally licensed imports for sale on these very pages (such as this Featured Listing), one would have to wonder if it is worth the effort to go through the trouble of importing rather than waiting for the right bike to come along stateside. Depending upon your state of residence and your willingness to do paperwork and play with the local DMV, this could be a good way to get that rare smoker that you want (but can't find here).

1986 Yamaha TZR250 for sale on eBay

The TZR250 is a parallel twin, first introduced in 1986. There was a Japanese home market model (1KT) and a European model (2MA), the latter which differed primarily by road-going legalities such as headlight size, turn signal placement, etc. However the 2MA variant does have both a lower compression ration and more HP (50 vs 45), given that Japanese market bikes were restricted in output. The seller claims that this is a 1KT bike that has been upgrade to 2XT status, but it is not clear what exactly that entails. In the course of some research, I have seen 2MA (Euro) bikes listed as 2MA/2XT, so it could be as simple as regional updates. This bike shows all the hallmarks of a home market survivor: some corrosion is evident thanks to the proximity of the ocean air, there are bodywork nicks, scrapes and cracks no doubt obtained in close-quarter parking situations, and some road rash reminiscent of some youthful squidliness (don't ask me how I know what that looks like). Otherwise it appears to be a solid survivor. The bike has 15k on the odometer, but being a Japanese spec machine that is in kilometers. The mileage equivalent would be approximately 9,400 miles. Be aware that bikes imported from Japan do not have a 17 digit VIN, which may be a problem come registration time.

The price of entry for this 250 is only $3,800 USD. The seller will also entertain offers. That price includes the cost to crate and ship the bike to your home port. That is not a lot of coin, but then again, you have to take the risk, do the legwork, and get (potentially) buried in red tape or paperwork. Designed as a natural evolution of Yamaha’s RD two-stroke sportbikes, the TZR250 helped set the tone for the entire class, and the bike featured a lightweight aluminum beam frame, full bodywork, and liquid-cooling for the twin-cylinder powerplant that produced a claimed 50hp with the help of Yamahas YPVS power-valve. Until the introduction of the 3XV version of the bike in 1991, Yamaha used a parallel-twin configuration although rivals from Honda and Suzuki quickly moved to v-twin engines. The TZR was cutting-edge when introduced but was quickly eclipsed by the sportier offerings from Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Honda until the 3MA reverse-cyclinder version was introduced, although that bike was never officially available outside Japan.

Unlike some other small sportbikes of the 80s and 90s, including Yamaha’s own 3MA, the TZR250 came with 17” wheels front and rear. This could, in theory, could help with tire selection: there are lots of smaller “sportbike lite” Ninja 300s and CBR300s running around and certainly bikes like KTM’s RC390 cry out for sporty rubber in skinnier sizes. The single front disc and caliper probably won’t offer cutting-edge stopping power but, with good pads fitted, should pull the sub-300lb machine up well enough.

This example is fresh off the boat from one of the regular eBay importers, and looks very striking in this unfamiliar color scheme. If you’re comfortable with DMV shenanigans in your home state, keep an eye on this one. It's a little rough around the edges, with some scuffs and surface corrosion, but is complete and appears to run well.

The bike is just imported from Japan. Not registered yet in the U.S. Very good running condition sharp response of 2-stroke engine is still well. Can shift all gears very smooth. Brakes are work fine. Electricals are all working. Has YAMAHA genuine fairings, but has hairline cracks and chips and scratches on fairings. Fuel tank has some scratches. Will needs new tires and fork seals too. Speedometer looks YAMAHA genuine parts and shows 11,900 km = about 7,400 mi, but actual mileage is unknown. Has an original key.

This is an over 30 years old used bike. Sold as is with NO warranty NO refunds NO return.

The seller also includes a video of the bike starting and running. The last TZR250 1KT we featured sold for $6,000 on the nose, so this one should probably fall somewhat lower given the recently imported status: the aforementioned bike actually had a NJ title. I happen to like the graphics on this one, although traditionalists may prefer the period’s seemingly more common red/white speedblock pattern, so I’m not sure how the color will affect interest in the bike.

Keep in mind that this is a no-reserve auction, so keep an eye on this little TZR as it might go for cheap.

Introduced in 1986, the Yamaha TZR250 was the follow up to their RD family of sportbikes. Yamaha's first go at a quarter-liter TZR had middling success: it wasn’t especially competitive next to more focused rivals from Kawasaki and Suzuki on track, but it was a far better roadbike. The TZR followed the standard two-fiddy two-stroke formula of the period, with a lightweight aluminum frame and fully-faired bodywork surrounding a 249cc liquid-cooled parallel twin, and midrange courtesy of Yamaha’s YPVS power valve. They claimed 50hp from the motor, which made the 282lb dry machine capable of a top speed north of 120mph.

17” wheels could be found at both ends, although tire sizes fall somewhere near bicycle width in the front and front tire at the rear… The single disc brake up front was adequate and pretty standard for lightweight sportbikes of the period, although twin front discs quickly became the norm for the 250cc class. Apparently a "blue spot" caliper from an R1 or R6 will bolt directly onto the stock front forks if you feel you need a bit more stopping power, a little restomod touch, or a splash of color.

The first TZRs were known as the 2MA or 1KT bikes, depending on the market in which they were sold. Later, the parallel twin saw its head reversed in an effort to improve cornering clearance in the 3MA, before Yamaha switched to a v-twin for the final, 3XV version.

Well that's not exactly a ton of information, almost an eBay haiku, but at least the seller includes a number of nice pictures. Even with the recent influx of grey-market two-strokes, the Yamaha TZR is pretty rare, although at that $6,000 Buy It Now price seems on the high side. They’re claimed to be relatively easy to maintain which is appealing, considering parts will have to ship from overseas most likely.

Interestingly, this particular little smoker is hiding in New Jersey. See: some good things do come from Jersey! Besides me of course: I grew up there. Actually, I’ve never really understood all the hate heaped on Jersey. It’s like people fly into Newark International Airport and decide that the whole place must just be more of the same. Or they get their information from uppity New York residents… Anyway, the state may be best known for its Jersey Shore bro-culture and really good tomatoes, but it is most definitely not known for having a permissive DMV, so I’m wondering about the status of this TZR. Is it registered and titled? The listing doesn’t say. Maybe that's why it's being sold after only a year? Considering that these early 2MA bikes are supposed to be most at home on the road, it’d be a shame if this was for collectors and track-riders only.

1985 Yamaha TZR250 1KT for sale

At 308lbs wet and 50hp on tap, the seller says this 85 TZR250 will keep up with RZ350 with no problem, and I don't doubt it. This attractive little package is the first year for the TZR250 and was originally sold in Japan. Today's example has received some freshening and is exceptionally clean to my eye!
