I think everyone knows that I am a FZR 400 nut, but it is time to let one of them go. So, I am putting up for sale my 89 red and white, 100% original, all stock 400. The history on the bike is limited to the time that I’ve owned it, which is just shy of 1 year. I purchased it on ebay from New Hampshire, site unseen, and had it shipped to me in Indiana. Like most hobbyist, I have way more money into to it than I expect to get out of it, but it is a nice clean example. I bought it and immediately started cleaning it up and sourcing parts that I wanted to replace so it would be even nicer than it already was, but I didn’t replace any parts. I never even licensed it because it was apart being cleaned or something being powder coated. So in short, all of the things I’m about to list have 0 miles on them. That’s right, I worked on it all winter and early spring only to sell it. Why am I selling it, you might be asking? I’m only selling because thanks to RSBFS I was able to locate and purchase my dream 400 which is a 1990 100% original version with only 8,000 miles on it. And, I purchased it from the original owner with the original sales receipt. Pretty cool eh?

Back to the 89′…

Recent updates include:
Fresh powder coated/clear coated rims. The clear is powder coating as well
New wheel bearings – front and rear
New screw down valve stems
Fresh ceramic coating on the stock exhuast
Rebuilt master cylinder
Rebuilt both front brake cylinders
Fresh brake fluid
New front brake pads
Fresh fork oil – still has the original springs
Fresh oil and oil filter change
Carbs cleaned
New spark plugs
Cooling system flush and fill
Solo seat + stock rear seat
Factory service manual will be included
And a whole lot of cleaned parts

Now, I don’t want to mislead anyone, because this is not a cosmetically perfect example. It is a 21/22 year bike with the usual bumps and bruises that come with having 28,300 miles on the clock. I believe 1,350 miles a year is low by anyone’s standard, unless you’re a collector with several bikes to choose from. This will probably surprise most of you, but the 89 runs as good and if not better than my 90. 400′s are known to run hot so the previous owner wired the cooling fan to be on when the key is on. This is a huge benefit when sitting in stop and go traffic.

Quite rare, but not unobtainable, are the aluminum framed FZR 400′s. Located in San Jose, California is this 1989 FZR 400 with an asking price of $2750. This isn’t the most desirable year, but, looks quite clean for being twenty years old. FZR’s (Specifically the 400′s and 600′s) need to be carefully examined to make sure they haven’t been beat continuously for their whole lives. This example only shows 9K miles and looks well cared for–still having its original plastics. If you’re in the market, this would be worth looking into in this condition and at this price. 1989 Suzuki Katana 750GSX: Oh the Memories!

When this one popped up on my eBay favorite searches, I just about spit my Stella out all over the monitor. My close friend and riding buddy Paul used to own a Katana 750 just like this one. I mean EXACTLY like this one: that champagne color, an 89, and completely stock. I remember when he bought it from this idiot who tried to sell it out from under him to a higher bidder after Paul had secured the bike with a deposit!

Don’t you just hate non-savvy users who insist on using all caps? Rant aside, this looks like a really solid buy at $2300 with such low miles and zero modifications. I asked Paul to highlight his experience with his bike:

[21:07] Paul: that is a rare find, all stock and in reasonable condition with low miles, still a lot of bike for $2300.
[21:10] Paul: High points: GSXR derived engine, lots of power and plenty of torque, sport-touring riding position for long-trip comfort, obviously an easy bike for novices balanced and smooth even if the rider isn’t
[21:12] Paul: Low points: to call the styling dated would be an understatment… honestly I can’t think of much to fault if for, other than puting a 400cc non-O-ring chain on mine I really didn’t do anything but an occasional oil change,
[21:13] Paul: Greatest ride: Sonoma, hands down, still the greatest motorcycle trip of my life (we need to do better next summer!)

He went on to say he originally purchased his with about 23k miles for $2900 in 1995, and sold it about a year later for $2500 to another close friend of ours, TravelEd. Hopefully I can get Ed in here to give his .02 too!

The description of the bike is terrible and I suspect a few of the facts stated to be in question. Mix in a comma or period at least man! Grammar aside, of particular interest is his mention of the 9 digit VIN considering the conversation in the comments recently. Nonetheless, if you’ve been looking for something more affordable than what’s been posted recently, this might be worth the goose chase if you live nearby.
