This 2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera has barely covered its break-in period, and comes complete with a boxful of accessories and two Akrapovic exhaust setups. And, if you're so inclined, the option of a two-year warranty. On a 200-horsepower, 400-pound Scud missile. With a license plate. And turn signals.

It is nigh on impossible to avoid cliches when describing the 1199 Superleggera, as writers have been trying to come up with ways to describe ever lighter, ever faster, ever more mind-bending bikes since Harley and Davidson strapped their first thumper to a Safety Bicycle. Weapons analogies seem appropriate, though, as a race bike handled carelessly will have the same effect on you as any of Beelzebub's evilest creations.

Even with three years under its belt, the 1199 is an amazing machine, carrying all but the final, infinitesimally small and expensive tweaks that Ducati's WSBK steeds do. Though it will pass emissions and safely indicate a turn, this bike has very little business on a public road, needing only its first two gears to land you squarely in jail, or turn you into Hunter Thompson's aptly-named creature.

The bike seen here comes from a dealer in California and is, for all intents and purposes new. Judging by the size of the chicken strips on the tires, it has rarely, if ever been ridden in anger. It comes from smack in the middle of the Superleggera's production run, wearing number 294 out of 500 examples.

Ducati outfitted the 1199 Superleggera with a lighter, tungsten-balanced crankshaft, titanium con rods, and a lighter flywheel. Ducati also used aluminum cylinder liners instead of steel

With these enhancements, the 1199 Superleggera produces more than 200 horsepower. To tame this type of power, Ducati incorporated a host of electronics, including Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC), Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Engine Brake Control (EBC). These systems are optimized “with new automatic calibration of rear-tire size and final transmission ratio.” Ducati also added a race-derived, handlebar mount to easily adjust the levels of these systems on the track.

Many Ducati special editions have been a bit disappointing, unless you were looking for a living room decoration. All that carbon fiber added to the cost, but saved just a few pounds compared to bikes that weren't all that light to begin with, and the upgraded suspension bits may have looked cool, but racers probably binned the original bits for even higher-spec parts before they hit the track, as the stock parts often looked better than they performed...

But the Superleggera went on a truly ruthless diet. Yeah, the usual fairing panels were replaced with carbon as you'd expect. But then basically everything on the bike that could be lightened or replaced with lighter parts, was lightened or replaced with lighter parts. The updates were comprehensive, and include magnesium airbox/headstock, magnesium engine cases, lightweight internals, and a carbon-fiber subframe.

The result was a bike that weighed in, full of gas and still wearing lights and mirrors, at under 400lbs. That's nearly 70lbs less than the BMW S1000RR, one of very few bikes that could outperform the stock 1199.

And it's a screamer, too: I'm still getting used to the idea of a 1200cc v-twin that revs to 12,500rpm. That was four-cylinder territory until this bike came along. Pankl rods, titanium valves, and other lightweight internals all add up to a bike that puts out almost 190hp at the wheel, well over 200hp at the crank.

This is, quite literally, a World Superbike that's completely road legal. Well, it's actually a few horses short, but it's also lighter than a World Superbike...

This bike is notable for being the lowest-priced Superleggera I've seen so far which, at $49,999.00 maybe isn't saying all that much. This rock-bottom price might be because of the massive 2,500 miles this thing's racked up since new... But it is nice to know these things are being ridden by some of their owners. I've even seen them on the road and in the canyons.

And ride them you should: after all, that's perhaps the very coolest thing about modern motorcycles. We're quickly heading towards Moto GP levels of performance on our streetbikes, and that would obviously be impossible for most riders to handle without some electronic aids to keep that killing power in check.

Oh? You say you're so good you don't need that stuff? Yes you do. And that safety net means that you folks who are convinced you're better than this bike are that much less likely to high-side yourselves into Low Earth Orbit, and there might be a few of these left for me at some point.

This one's actually a bike I'd love to own at some point, once the prices drop. If they drop: I'm hoping for an F4CC sort of precipitous drop in values over the next few years, but that might just be wishful thinking...

The Price of Perfection: 2014 Ducati 1199 Panigale Superleggera

I’m not one to gush over a bike, and usually, this sort of thing doesn’t interest me: a limited-edition Italian superbike with tons of possibly pointless bling thrown at it, colorful anodized and blacker-than-black carbon everything, the slightly matte rainbow glow of titanium piping, all stuck to the bike to make it more “exclusive.”

But the Ducati Superleggera isn’t really that bike.

Many of these I’m sure will end up cocooned in heated garages, squirreled away in collections, never to turn a wheel in anger, except for an annual roll-out into the sun where they will sit, blinking dazed into the light, while they're licked clean by owners too terrified to damage their investments and egos by putting miles on something this unforgiving. But these bikes were built to be ridden, not collected...

Normally, bikes like these are the province of Ducati-specialists NCR, who can actually improve your Desmosedici by making it both lighter and more powerful. But Ducati took a page out of NCR’s playbook book and just built their own nearly unobtainable special.

This is the superbike, perfected.

Not “perfected” like a BMW S1000RR HP4, with techno-geek sophistication and nods to everyman affordability, but with every part lightened, replaced, or improved in infinitesimal ways, cost-no-object. The frame replaced with… Well, it never had a frame to begin with, but the normally aluminum airbox/headstock is replaced with cast magnesium…

The rest of the listing is just a reprint of specs. Which is sort of pointless, if you asked me, but what else is there to say? There’s no history for this example, with 32 miles on the clock. No mods, no customization, nothing but the window sticker, and some included “race” bits that includes an Akrapovic titanium exhaust.

Weighing in at 390lbs with a full tank of fuel, more than 70 pounds less than the aforementioned BMW, with 200 claimed horsepower at the crank, you’d have to add weight to be legal in any racing class. With no regulations to conform to, this thing is lighter than a World Superbike. In fact, it doesn’t meet the requirements for any race class. It’s pointless. It’s useless. It’s better than you are, better than you will ever be, a testament to the idea of speed.

These bikes aren’t friendly: the electronic aids aren’t there to help you go faster. They’re there to allow you to go faster, if you have the skill to exploit them.

And I’m sorry, but I think we can safely say that you don’t. Honestly, you will probably be faster on that BMW: this isn't some smooth, refined experience. It's an animal. A brutal, terrifiying, hairy-chested thing. You must be THIS tall to ride this ride. Under 18 not admitted without parent or guardian.

Look, I was never really a fan of the 1198. While the 999 maybe took too many stylistic chances, the 1198 didn’t take enough: basically a modernized 916, it was sleek, but bland. The Panigale, on the other hand, looks like nothing else, and is much more exciting for going its own way. The Superleggera just turns the volume up to 11, to indulge in one last cliché.
