Rough but Ready: Low-mileage 1988 Honda CBR250R Hurricane

Before the world decided that 250cc engines were for dirtbikes, scooters and wheezy, cheaply-made beginner bikes, there was a real appetite for small-displacement machines that punched above their weight and could hold rider interest for longer than a few grocery runs.

1988 Honda CBR250R for sale on eBay

To be fair, over-engineered 250s never caught on very well in this country, where displacement and raw horespower have always ruled, but overseas there was real appreciation for less-is-more sportbikes. The 1988 Honda CBR250R Hurricane was such a bike.

With 40 horses available at somewhere well above 15,000 rpm, the little four pot made you work for your progress, while a single-disc front brake meant you could hold on to that momentum as long as your confidence held out. Later versions of the bike made more power and carried stronger brakes, but the set up here should be more than adequate for canyon carving.

The example here currently resides in site supporter "Gary's Utah collection", though it needs more cosmetic attention than much of his collection. The clearcoat on the tank is visibly peeling, and the frame, engine, triples and exhaust show minor pitting and corrosion. That said, the bodywork and paint show very nicely, and is dent, crack and break-free. The tires are next to new, and the bike will be loaded with fresh fluids before the new owner takes over.

From the eBay listing:

Up for auction to the highest bidder with NO RESERVE is a beautiful 1988 Honda CBR250R MC19 with only 7939 kilometers (4933 miles). This little Hurricane has an inline four cylinder engine that revs to 18,000RPM's! It's a screamer! This bike would make an excellent candidate for restoration since it has low miles. This bike has huge potential! All this bike needs is to be cleaned up and it will look like a million bucks! The clear coat on the fuel tank is peeling. The bike has corrosion throughout from the elements but will clean up easily for the person that has the time to take it apart and clean it up. There are no cracks in the fairings, no broken tabs, no dents in the tank and no missing hardware. The stock windscreen doesnt have any cracks and looks very clear. It's in original unmolested condition. Fairings are 100% genuine original OEM Honda. Bike is completely stock and has great curb appeal. Bike appears to have never been layed down or fallen over. There is rust on the tachometer and temp gauge. I have another set of gauges that are very clean and will come with the bike. Bike runs excellent and will be serviced before delivery with new battery and new engine fluids. Only 420 miles on new IRC RX-20R tires. This bike is solid. I just don't have the time or the interest to restore it.

Bike comes with a Utah title and is titled as a street bike for road use. $500 deposit due after auctions end via PayPal. Balance due within 7 days by check, bank wire or cash in person. Please text 801-358-6537 for more photos or questions.

Happy bidding!

As with all Gary's bikes, it is titled for street use in Utah. The auction is no reserve, so highest bidder takes this ripper home.
