Facebook Reader Rides

We recently ran a contest for a new cover photo on our Facebook page and the results were really awesome to take in. The contest was simple:

Post a pic in the comments of this post of your favorite Rare SportBike **in your current stable** Most likes by Sunday wins and gets a RSBFS shirt as well!

The winner of the contest is this stunning Ducati SuperSport build titled Loudbike California Special:

A stunning bike and of course as a SuperSport owner and fanatic myself, I was pleased to see it win. It's definitely more built up than what we typically feature for sale on the site but I appreciate the enthusiasm the owner demonstrated in rallying so many likes to win. Congratulations!

Here are some of the other runner ups with the most likes:

Unfortunately this informal method of collecting submissions and votes exposes that Facebook is not the best platform for this type of contest as many quality submissions were buried in the 140+ submissions and never got the attention they deserved. Like these:

Regardless it was a fun experiment and we look forward to running the next contest. Thank you to everyone who participated and to all the great RSBFS readers!

Please note: These were submitted as reader rides and to our knowledge are not for sale.

Bonhams Las Vegas 2017 Recap

While I've known about the Mecum and Bohmans auctions in Las Vegas for several years now, this was my first chance to go. We found a great package for the Bellagio and decided to make a quick trip of the event. Unfortunately we were only able to make it to the Bonhams sale but as a first taste of live auction action, we were not disappointed. Not to mention they had dozens of bikes that fit the RSBFS niche. I've highlighted a handful below with some shaky videos and quick snapshots.

Many thanks to Nick and Jared at Bonhams who graciously gave me the nickel tour just minutes before the auction began. I look forward to returning someday soon as a registered bidder!

RSBFS notable sales:

This 2008 Ducati Desmosedici RR, one Owner with 1,500 miles sold for just $36,000 before premium!

Here is a 1985 Honda VF1000R with 4 Miles that sold for $11,500 before premium.

And an RSBFS favorite, a 1985 Yamaha RD500LC with 1,279 Miles sold for $20,500 before premium.

But this 2003 MV Agusta F4 750 Series Oro with 0 miles didn't sell at $40k bid.

This 1984 Ducati 748cc TT1 Road Racer was a featured bike at Bonhams but failed to sell at $80k.

I was curious about this extensively upgraded 1997 Ducati 900SS/SP, which sold for $6,800 before premium. The description states there is a history files documenting $20k in work!

The MH900e market seems stable with this example showing under 5,000 miles and reaching a sale at $18,400 before premium.

This Laverda RGS1000 was bid up to $9k but did not sell.

I didn't get to see this one, but this Bimota YB8 Furano is shown as sold at $13,000 before premium.

I also wasn't able to see this Ducati 851 Tricolore with the race kit. It doesn't show a sale price. Did anyone catch what the final bid was?

Out of sheer curiosity, this Cagiva Gran Canyon sold for a mere $3,450 including premium. Nice buy!

For all the sale results, check out the results on the Bonhams website.

Relist 2: Stunning 1987 Suzuki GSX-750R with 700 Miles available in Florida

Back after 2 years and offered by the same seller, it looks like this pristine GSX-750R hasn't turned a wheel in anger since the previous listing.   Still a beauty and a bike that will likely continue to appreciate in value over time - Marty

1987 Suzuki GSX-R 750 for sale

Orginal post by our fearless leader Dan Crouch

Some of the Japanese, mass produced, modern classics we post can be classified as survivors. Not this one. This is a collector owned example and it shows like new. Survivors are great as they provide most of the experience you remember when they were new but regardless of how well kept, it's still used. This is even more extreme in that it represents as new and has been cared for to maintain that status. The buy-it-now of $16,500 $18,500 USD certainly reflects that but this is one of those examples where you have to ask, where and when will another example of this quality be available?

From the seller:

  • Third owner, original owner was the drag racing legend Don "the snake" Prudhomme.  Was stored in a climate controlled race shop it's whole life with him.  It's now stored in my garage with climate control also.
  • Everything works like new, the only thing i see is the bottom of the mirrors have a couple very minor scuffs, and there is a small scratch above the rear grab handle above the tail lamp.  The tires are not even dry rotted but they should be replaced if the bike is going to be ridden.
  • When the second owner got it there were some minor bumps and bruises to the lowers and the mid fairings, and a small scratch on the front fender and fairing.  He sent them out to TC concepts and had them professionally redone to perfection, as well as the solo seat cowl cover.  He also had the carbs redone and the engine oil replaced with the filter (he thought it was the original oil).  He then put about 50 miles on the bike.
  • The original marker plate goes with the bike.

Now for the question - is this pristine bit of Slab-sided goodness worth the Buy-It-Now price of $18,500 USD?  Well from what I have been able to find this bike was originally sold back around 2012 for about $12,500 and was then relisted again in 2014 for $16,500.  Now the asking prices is $18,500 so thats a $6000 price appreciation over 4 years which seems a bit aggressive to me.  Overall I think the current value of this one is probably between $14,000-$15,000 (here in the US)...still pricey but the value of these probably isn't going to go down anytime soon.

1990 Honda RC30 For Sale in California

s-l1600-2

We've seen some quick sales of great examples late in the season (check out this ZX750M1 that sold in two days for $18k) and this RC30 in California could fit that bill as well. It is advertised with less than 10k miles and the opening bid is $22k reserve not met. Where do you think this bike will end up?

Have a great weekend,

From the seller:

If you are looking for one of these, no explanation is required how rare and exotic this motorcycle is. hand built one by one and imported 300 only to state. She is in beautiful condition. She has Micron exhaust but comes with stock exhaust and bottom fairing in pristine condition as well. Rear wheel stand is also included. I have couple of boxes of NOS and extra stuff to go with. Only thing missing is the factory tool kit. I will only accept cash or bank transfer for payment. She is a 49 state bike.
