RZ500’s are one of the most popular bikes sought after by our readers, but the RZV500 is even more rare in the states. The most notable difference is the use of an aluminum frame vs. a painted steel frame that reportedly saves nearly 30lbs. Other differences include a front fork that is adjustable for air pressure as well as rebound, there are numerous additional aluminum bits such as brake lever, gear shift lever, clip ons, etc., and the bike came with stock braided brake lines instead of rubber.
1985 Yamaha RZV500 for sale on eBay
This example has some minor blems but nothing I’d consider a deal breaker; rather with some patina I’d be more inclined to actually ride it as intended!

from the seller:
This is the rarer Japanese RZ500R version. Not a RZ500 (steel frame) version. The R version was made in much smaller numbers for the Japan market only. This bike is California registered and the registration is good till June 2014.
Very soon after buying the bike an unforeseen medical incident occurred and I’m no longer able to ride and therefore I have to sell my dream bike.
The bike has new tires which came with it which a friend of mine helped me to install. I did buy a new battery even though the original would start the bike it appeared to have some bad cells. The battery cover is included and is in also in very good condition.
A friend of mine put Motul oil in the engine for me even though the oil that was in the bike looked clean. The chain and rear sprocket appear to be new or have very little wear.
There were some other spares besides the tires that came with it which I have included in the pictures. These are the stock rear shock, the anti dive steel braided lines that connect the calipers to the forks, front lower fairing screen guard, stock rear sets and the stock tool tray.
The bike does have some really nice chambers that were probably made in Japan but none of my friends in Japan can find out who made them.
The bike has 7,207.4 miles on it. There are a few scratches and chips that I have tried to point out in the pictures. The upper right side fairing above the right blinker on the blue and white stripe you can see the crack which looks like it must have leaned up against something causing it to crack. There is a small scratch on the right side of the gas tank.
On the rear seat there is a very small scratch on the red part just next to the rear seat pad which also has some very small wear spots.
On the right upper pipe cover there is a small paint chip and scratch on the sticker but does not appear to be deep just on the sticker. New stickers are available.
There are some small what appear to be stress cracks on the lower fairing which I have also tried to show in the pictures.I think from some of the other bikes I’ve seen over time this bike is in very good condition considering it’s age. This bike was well taken care of. There are no signs of oxidation at all.
The rear shock is an Ohlins unit with a remote reservoir.
The R version also has as I had previously mentioned with the spare parts the adjustable upper forks that only come on the R aluminum frame model.
The bike starts usually on the 2nd kick and that was with the old battery.
