2003 Yamaha OW02 R7 For Sale in Portugal

We don't get the chance to post the OW-02 very often, so I'm including this one from Portugal. Obviously only collectors need apply, but $25k sounds like a good price for this bike.

The seller does a good job of giving an overview of the model:

The Yamaha YZF-R7 OW02 is a race homologation motorcycle of limited production run of only 500 units. It was designed to compete in the Superbike World Championship and Suzuka 8 Hours endurance races.

It has a 749 cc, 20 valve (5 valves per cylinder) inline-4 DOHC producing 107 horsepower (80 kW), 139 hp (105 kW) when the other, unused bank of fuel injectors is activated, and over 162 hp (120 kW) in race trim.

The R7 was built for racing 'out of the box', implied by the chassis, which was derived from information and geometry from the YZR500 machines of the period. The R7 was specified with Öhlins suspension components, a shortened Deltabox II frame and weight of just slightly over the 162 kg minimum of superbike regulations.

The intentions of the R7 were further underlined, with its designation of "OW-02" and the lack of any pillion/passenger provision

This is a real collector's item with only 3,800 km's, in recent years been under the care of a French collector. Completely original, the bike is No 375 of only 500 units produced.

A technological marvel that never got the spotlight it deserved, here's your chance to fill that empty corner of your collection with a very special bike.

Introduced in 1999 and sold for just two years, the exotic Yamaha YZF-R7 OW02 was the long-awaited successor to the OW01 of the late 1980's, a barely-legal roadbike intended to homologate the R7 for World Superbike competition. But after just two years, Yamaha pulled the plug on the bike and their WSBK team as well. Was it because Yamaha felt their inline four couldn't be competitive in a series whose rules heavily favored v-twins? Possibly: even Honda gave up on their RC45 to run twins, a move which saw them achieve the success they'd been seeking, but unable to find with their V4 superbikes.

Regardless, the R7 featured tiny details all over the bike that made it more than just another roadbike: the steering geometry could be changed to suit rider preference, with rake, trail, and the steering head all adjustable. The 749cc engine, as you'd expect, featured Yamaha's five-valve heads. Dead stock, the bike made a disappointing 106hp, but that was simply to appease emissions and safety legislation. Each bike has a second, dormant set of injectors that could be activated. Along with a race-kit and a carbon airbox that added a ram-air effect, the two sets of injectors unleashed the full race-spec 162hp.

Of course, this led to a corresponding loss of reliability. Hardly a concern for race teams, but a bit of problem if you wanted to use your R7 on the road. Some owners just said "screw it" and fitted an R1 engine, which seems sacrilegious, until you realize the swap probably captures the R7 experience in terms of power, if not in terms of the original engine's appetite for revs...

The bike is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition with only 6490 Kilometers (4032 Miles). The Yamaha YZF-R7 OW02 is a race homologation motorcycle of limited production run of only 500 units. It was designed to compete in the Superbike World Championship and Suzuka 8 Hours endurance races.

The second set of fuel injectors have been activated (only 4 of 8 are activated from the factory), also included are the supporting YEC kit parts:
carbon fiber airbox
velocity stacks
throttle and cables
fuel pump
fuel regulator

I also have the OEM versions of these parts.

When the power is turned on to the bike, the oil light flashes 5 times, meaning the ECU supports
all 8 fuel injectors being activated.

This R7 had the crank recall done at Wilson Yamaha in Fresno California where the bike was originally purchased.

Also, this R7 is titled and plated in CA. There are no back DMV fees due, the bike is in non-operation status.

I also have the factory assembly manual and YEC kit manual.

As is so often the case, I'd love some better photographs: seriously, if you upload them and realize they're kinda blurry, you can go back and reshoot them. Especially if you're expecting top-dollar for your bike.

And with a Buy It Now price of $22,000 the seller certainly is. Although with some pretty serious bidding going on, it looks like the market isn't caring so much about those poor-quality photos...

So I just have to be up front here and say I'm not sure what to make of this bike. Clearly it is advertised as and looks like an R7-OW02, one of the coolest, limited production, homologated specials ever. Certainly for that reason alone it deserves attention. However, this bike is also advertised as a full factory race bike that does't have the OW02 750cc engine, but a built 1000cc R1 motor. Clearly that would mean that it's not a stock R7. But if it is a factory race bike, then it could be something very special.

Here's important information from the seller that may help figure this thing out-

Here's your chance to own one of the rarest superbikes on the planet. This is a full factory prepared R7 superbike. This particular bike contested the Unlimited 1999 Macau GP with Michael Rutter then went on to compete in the Island of Man and the Northwest 200.

So lets start with what this bike is. This is a full factory Yamaha R7. If you know what a R7 is then you'll understand that this is the Godzilla of R7's. Spec wise we have a full factory R1 (1078cc) Superbike motor with TI rods, knife edged crank,3mm big bore,YEC kit cams, full YEC kit tranny and KES quickshifter, its fueled by a very unique Motec fuel injection system, it all flows out a Promotive custom Ti exhuast that weighs next to nothing!.You get your dash info from a Stack tach metering system wired into the Factort YEC kit racing harness. Ok here's the cool stuff this bike was tuned by Slick Base (Fogerty's championship mechanic). I dyno'd it on a DynoJet 200 where it made a strong 182.4 rwhp.All that power and heat is cooled off by a full length Superbike R7 Febor radiator (about $5,800 at the time).

Lets talk about the subline chassis of this trick R7. The R7 was already known for awesome handling and this bike brings that legend to a new level. Spec wise we have a YEC kit swingarm with quick change front and rear spindles. Of course there are the GP spec Ohlins (unobtainium) front 43mm fork supported in a magnesium and aluminum Harris adjustable triple clamp. In the rear there is GP spec TTX22 Olhins attached to a YEC Kit linkage.

When it comes to braking nothing but the best was sourced for this monster. AP six piston calipers grab 330mm cast Brembo superbike rotors with a Radial AP 30mm master cylinder. The wheels are very trick Magnesium Marvic Pentas 3.75 front, 6.25 rear...these are ridiculously light wieght. It's got a new set of Dunlop Ntech's with one track session on them.

The bodywork is all YEC Spec fiberglass painted up in HAGA R7 colors by Dreamworks.

So that's the bike. Very trick,very rare very cool. In it's day this thing was the dream bike of all racers. I assume your looking at $100k plus invested in the development and assembly of this bad boy. I'm selling it because I'm a pig and have three more R7's in different confiqurations and I just have't used this bike in over a year. I actually started racing my Ferrari 430GT this summer and need another $20k set of ceramic brakes (this is the second set!!!) so this bike will be sold to fund a new stupid expensive passion. I know sic bike for a set of brakes wtf is the matter with me.

Anyway this R7/1 would make a beautiful addition to a superbike collection, a wicked cool track day bike (you'll be the only one EVER!) or you could cut up the fairing add a single light and do a 8hr Suzuka Replica for the most rare street bike ever. Desmosedici's look like a moped next to this bike!

I have several more (over 100!) sic superbikes that may come up for auction in the next couple of months so save me as a seller because the stuff I'm selling never comes up for sale. There's a Muzzy Raptor racer, Chandler's ZX7RR AMA Champ bike,a slew of FUSA racers.

Okay, so the seller states the bike was campaigned at the 1999 Macau GP, Isle of Man and the North West 200. I would want to get some information that would verify the bike was ridden in those events, especially when linking the bike to Michael Rutter. If that can be done, then I'm assuming the price becomes more justifiable. And of course that would also speak volumes about the modifications to the bike. Clearly anything that is factory prepped is special and the photos seem to show the special parts highlighted by the seller that come with that.

Condition is difficult with race bikes, but this one does't appear to have been wrecked. However, confirmation of that or whatever has happened to the bike would also be good. This may be one hell of a machine when it comes to build and parts, but really the thing that puts it into a higher category is the heritage. If it's there as the seller claims, then you really have something. In terms of price, this one is hard to gauge. I think it really is the market and who's buying that will determine price.

So, I guess all I can say is if you like this bike, do your homework. If it checks out and you have the means, congrats to you. You got a one of a kind. Regardless, this is an interesting machine and I encourage you to check it out!

Okay, well here we have something special. While Yamaha built many, many bikes in the new R series when it came to 600's and 1000's (R6 and R1), that was not the case with the R7. This bike was limited run (500 produced), made for racing and only built so it could qualify for World Superbike (of which a title was never achieved but is an interesting story if you want to look it up). The other way this bike was different from everything else? The price. You want to take this baby home in 1999, get ready to fork over $32,000. But with that $32k came front and rear suspension and steering damper from Ohlins, titanium valves and connecting rods, vertically stacked close-ration gearbox and a frame specially braced for stiffness. The five valve per cylinder in-line four only cranked out around 100 bhp (purposely restricted) from Yamaha, but the addition of race parts from the factory could take you well beyond that.

The seller provides very limited information, especially for a bike of this significance. Here it is-

1999 Yamaha YZR R7 s/n -------406, 6365 km 3955 miles,as of 07-08-2011.  Brembo Monoblock front brakes, Marchesini front wheel w/rotors, Track body panels (tail/front/bottom)

Brembo clutch & front brake master cylinders, Carbon air box, New tires, OEM front wheel/rotors/brakes included. 

The seller does highlight some of the changes to the bike, notably the Marchesini front wheel and Brembo monoblocks, maybe not unusual for someone looking to race the bike. It looks as though the original parts are included here, which is good for those looking for originality. The windscreen also looks to be a replacement as does the exhaust (I believe it should be carbon fiber). The only other comment I would have is there are few photos of the bike, so you may want to request more.

Outside of those concerns, which are minor, the OW02 is one special machine. I think anyone serious about collecting can't overlook one in terms of its significance. Certainly, if Yamaha is your brand, this has got to be near, if not the very top, of the list. If you agree, check out the auction!

This 1999 Yamaha YZF750 R7 is another beauty from Jeff’s outstanding collection. What could possibly be better than a limited edition Yamaha OW01? You guessed it, a Yamaha OW02! This race homologation model was limited to a production run of 500 units in 1999, making this quite rare indeed. The condition of this particular example is pristine. The R7 was produced to qualify the bike for World Superbike racing, and thus was not titled for street use from the dealer. Despite that fact, this version carries a Washington state title.

At a quick glance, this bike could be mistaken for either one of its siblings, the R6 or R1, but that would be a huge mistake as this is outfitted with race technology not afforded to the other “R”s. Some of these goodies include titanium valves & connecting rods, Ohlins suspension front & rear and a “back torque limiter” clutch, an early version of the slipper clutch. The seller tells the story:

This bike is titled, regestered and LICENSED for road use in Washington State.

No issues getting this machine licensed for the street -as it has already been done-!!

The bike has the YEC-Kit fuel pump, fuel regulator and wiring mod to engage the secondary fuel injectors and raise the horsepower

from the restricted state of tune used to pass import regulations (along with the addition of the Kit silencer and Kit airbox).

It is shown with YEC Kit exhaust canister but I also have the original Yamaha exhaust muffler as the original has been wrapped up

and boxed for safe keeping along with the original regulator, fuel pump and airbox.

For those true enthusiasts and collectors out there, you"ll already know the history and how rare the 0W02 is here in the United States.

Most became race bikes -so the number of original condition machines that were never raced remains VERY low.

False Alarm: 1999 Yamaha YZF-R7 OW02 With 600 Original Miles

Sorry folks, this one has actually been sold for some time. Their website is a bit tough to navigate and distinguish what may be available. Sorry for the misunderstanding and false alarm!

We haven't seen very many YZF-R7s out there but here is one with 600 original miles!  Located in Seattle, Washington is a 1999 Yamaha YZF-R7.  This bike is titled in Washington but supposedly stipulates Off-Road-Use-Only on it.  The only modifications from stock are braided front brake lines.  The bike comes with:

Included but not installed on the bike are a Yamaha race kit wiring loom, fuel pump/regulator and various other small race kit items. Service/owner's manual, race kit manual, parts microfiche catalogue all come with the bike as well.

Stock R7 mirrors, turn signals, tailight, etc., were all ordered from Japan and are included...The stock front lines are not included.

This example did have the camshaft(s) replaced under warranty at the end of 1999.  This is a two owner bike showing only 963km (598mi).

The R7 line features CNC machined head parts, titanium valves, titanium connecting rods, forged pistons with nickle plated faces, Ohlins suspension front and rear, adjustable swingarm pivot location, ram air carbon fiber air-box, plus more.  I think that these are the best looking of the YZF series probably due to the small front lights and powerful tail.  This example is for sale by a dealer and the asking price is $31,500.  Now, that price might be negotiable if this bike can be plated which the dealer states might be possible.  While yes, this bike will probably not see more than a hundred miles or so even if it has a plate, collectors want the possibility of riding the bike even if they know they won't.  Find a plate for this bike and I could see $31k as a genuine starting point.  See this bike at Red Label Moto here.
