All original: 1994 Ducati 916

When the 1994 Ducati 916 was unleashed, it caused the motorcycle world to stand up so fast it promptly fell right back down on its ass. When the industry press and its leather-clad readership had finally quit seeing stars, what they were staring at was a genre-definer the likes of which hadn't come along since the '80s.

The 916 platform went through myriad iterations and increases in displacement over the years, and there are plenty of 916 and 916 lookalikes available on every corner of the internet. Still, an unmolested first-year bike is a sweet find. With the exception of some dirt and grime, this 1994 Ducati 916 looks fully sorted and ready to go.

Bella Varese – 1995 Ducati 916

Ducati's 916 was on the verge of success when fire at their shops in Bologna forced a move to their parent company Cagiva's facility in Varese.  The resulting year's worth of production were given more than the usual hands-on attention and have acquired a certain cachet among Ducatisti.  This collector-owned 916 has 10,000 miles and a sprinkling of SPS-related updates.

It feels gratuitous to even review the specs for the familiar and iconic 916, but it was Ducati's foray into the 100+ hp bracket with 114 hp.  66 ft.-lbs. torque helped put the racing version on the WSBK four times in five years.  It was somewhat lighter than the preceeding 888, with a compact riding position and tucked-in underseat exhaust.  Designer Massimo Tamburini sketched in an alloy perimeter frame before reverting to Ducati's trademark chrome-moly trellis, and the lines of the frame echo throughout the bike.


Having evidently had its own brush with oblivion early on, this 916 was repaired flawlessly and updated to a carbon SPS tail and rear mudguard.  The owner has had the nose painted as a SPS model and added many nice carbon accents, as well as an Öhlins steering damper.  From the eBay auction:

- Most modifications in the form of quality bolt-on autoclave carbon. No cheap chinese ill fitting parts. This includes ram air tubes, airbox, chain guard, sprocket guard, lower "v" radiator cover and front fender. 
The paint is all factory except for the SPS number plate scheme on the front that replicates the look of a SPS bike to match the tail.
- The paint is in excellent condition with no dings or dents in the tank. There might be the minor shoe scuff or scratch but so minor it is impossible to really capture on camera. Any such imperfections would just be considered patina from 23 year old bike.
- This year bike came stock with an Ohlins rear shock. It has an Ohlins front steering damper and the stock damper is included.
- It has a the expensive BMC air filter system in the airbox. Basically they are mini K&N style filters that slide into their own receptacles at each ram air tube opening in the airbox. See pictures.
Much better than the stock air filter system and high tech.
- It has a Forza (Fast by Ferracci) exhaust system and chip and sounds fantastic. New clutch pack at 8000 miles. Vented clutch cover in period correct factory 1/2 cover configuration.
The tires are visually perfect but are at the age where you should consider replacing if you plan to ride this bike aggressively.
- The previous owner literally kept a hand written diary of all work done. I've never seen such diligence. It reads like a journal. You also get all the receipts and service records. There is zero unknowns with this bike. The bike was maintained religiously. Full service and belts where recently changed in October 2016 with 10039 miles on the clock. All work done by Desmoto sport in San Francisco.

Almost goes without saying that the 916 was Ducati's landmark success, and the model's successors became a dynasty on the track and street.  Most nicer 916's are likely on display at this point, and though the 10,000 miles and rebuilt title could lead the new owner out on the road, it seems too nice for anything but an occasional ride to a show...

Ducati rocked the motorcycle world with the introduction of the 916 in 1994. Here was a machine that revolutionized the idea of how sharp a street-going motorcycle could be; it offered stunning performance with supermodel good looks. From every angle and by every measure, the 916 redefined the top tier of sport bikes. No longer an evolution of the 851/888 line, the 916 was essentially all new and was an instant hit for Ducati, leading to a huge rise in sales and a fine collection of WSBK trophies.

In case you have lived in a cave for the last 20+ and have not kept tabs on any major motorcycling milestones, allow me to fill you in. The vaunted 916 essentially made its way to the top of the "best sport bike of 1995" article from every single motorcycle publication. Maybe it was the allure of the flowing bodywork. Perhaps it was the statement made by the single-sided swingarm, laying the back wheel bare to the world. Maybe it was the under-seat exhaust, tucked away for cornering clearance and aerodynamics. Perhaps it was the 90 degree L-twin, the 4-valve heads, desmo valve actuation, fuel injected and liquid cooling. But most likely it was the total package, tipping the scales at just over 420 lbs, narrow and svelte like a 600, but pushing 114 HP at the rear wheel with enough torque to loft the front end handily. Handling was unmatched, braking was a similar affair. There was no single element that made the 916 revolutionary, but the complete collection of bits was unlike anything the world had seen.

There is an interesting wrinkle to the 916 story, and one that makes this bike even more special. In 1994 Ducati was ramping production of the 916 to meet with unprecedented demand (most 1995 bikes were build in the latter part of 1994) - the rumor is that every first-year 916 in the US was spoken for before it ever left Italy. The factory in Bologna was running at full song. But a tragic fire (which started in the paint shop) shut down the production line at an inopportune time. Scrambling to continue building the most important motorcycle in Ducati's history, manufacturing was relocated to the Cagiva-owned MV Agusta factory in the city of Varese. Here, approximately 2,663 Ducati 916s were assembled (predominantly by hand) to keep the dream alive. The Bologna factory returned online in 1995, and production was reestablished there for the remainder of the builds. In addition to the base 916 model, approximately 310 SP spec bikes were also assembled in Varese.

A beautiful Ducati 916 in fantastic condition and extremely low miles. One of the closest to OE you can find. Comes with lots of extras, including carbon fiber bodywork and exhaust system. Minor imperfections include a vertical scratch on the right side of the tail (pictured) and very small scratches on the front of the lower left fairing.

Although Varese-built machines do not differ from any other 1995 model year 916, they are considered a bit special because of the circumstances involved. Some believe that a Varese 916 is build a bit better, having been more "hand made." The truth is that Varese 916s are indistinguishable from their Bologna counterparts, but for the 11th digit of the VIN; 916s assembled in Varese during this period have a "V" in that position rather than the traditional "B." Otherwise, all other parts and components are completely interchangeable with Bologna 916s of the same model year. Does that make them more collectable?

Putting the Varese complication aside, the 1995 model year 916 is an aspiring classic. This is perhaps one of the most recognizable motorcycles in the world. 20+ years later, this bike still looks fresh and new. Massimo Tamburini's masterpiece was a shot across the bow of all other manufacturers; Ducati was in the game to win. Sure, the Honda RC30 offered a single-sided swing arm years previous, and the oval-piston NR750 sported both that and the under tail exhaust - but neither bike was a mainstream build. The 916 took those elements and owned them for good. And today, these early 916s are gaining popularity - with prices following. This particular US-based Varese 916 has been on eBay for a bit, and is listed with a $18,590 Buy It Now. That is a bit higher than a clean 916 might bring, but the scant 2,265 miles, the claimed originality (although I spy with my little eye a non-OEM Evoluzione clutch slave cylinder), the impressive collection of spares, the FBF exhaust cans, the overall condition and the Varese connection might make this one worth it. Recovered Racer – 1998 Ducati 916

After an 18-month refurbishment, this 916 has a fresh carbon fairings and race engine.  While a detail here or there might need attention, it has a long list of mods resulting in a nicely presented and special 916.

Relieving the 888, the 916 started a new dynasty and made a lot of 1994 best bike lists.  Much of the machine was derived from Ducati racebikes - trellis frame, single-sided swingarm, dry clutch, underseat exhaust, and instantaneous access to the engine.  The folded headlight fairing was designed by Massimo Tamburini and became a sportbike icon.  In the five years from 1994-98, the torquey 916 won four Superbike World Championships.

This is an ex-privateer's racebike, and for all the fun of turning a road bike into a racer, bringing a race machine back to the street can be tougher.  The owner answered the challenge of integrating all the great mods and beautifying the lot.  This bike has had some updates for the track, and some on the way back to the street.  With a built race engine, 1098 front end and race dash, the owner added a full carbon fiber body, including the fuel tank.  Here's one paragraph from the long description in the eBay auction:

This build was year and a half effort; acquiring the right mix of parts to make a Duc that I’ve never seen. This bike’s been to many events, and it is an original.  It has carbon fiber Ducati performance bodywork, fuel tank, air intakes, airbox, front fender, rear fender, foot guards, chain guard and Arrow exhaust.  The only major part that isn’t carbon fiber is the wheels; they are Marchesini 10 spoke forged magnesium wheels (3.50" x 17" Front and 5.50" x 17" Rear).  The Marchesini 10 spoke wheel weights with bearings front 6.04lbs, and rear 7.76lbs, very light, so I stayed with the 10 spokes.  The inside of the fuel tank has been coated with Caswell epoxy gas tank sealer to prevent leaks and protect the carbon fiber.

With this 916 coming up on 20 years old, a reliability comparison between stock and modified would be more of a pain management exercise.  This build might suit a tinkerer or an owner with access to a good repair shop, as when service is required, it won't quite be covered by the maintenance manual.  In return, the new owner will have a one-of-a-kind 916, race-engined with classic looks but many more modern components.  Located in a north Dallas suburb, arranging an in-person inspection by a friend or a shop might be a way to start...

Ready-to-ride redhead: 1997 Ducati 916 Strada

Here is a Ducati 916 that is in good condition but probably won't appreciate in value as a collectors item.  It fact, it seems more likely this lovely redhead would be a fun acquisition for someone who missed out on the 916/996/998 experience or perhaps a way for a prior 916 owner to relive a bit of their youth.

There have been numerous previous posts on RSBFS that have explored the impact the 916 had on motorcycling, both when it was launched in 1994 and the subsequent SP, SPS, 996 and 998 models.  Rather than repeat this info again, I would suggest anyone who is curious click the link above and browse these past posts, leaving the remainder of this post as an analysis of this particular 916, focusing on the model, components, conditions, service history and best guess at a price.

This listing appears to be for a standard 1997 strada/"street" version and not the higher end SP, despite the white tail piece.  For anyone not familiar with the differences between the two models, the strada was the base/street version while the SP was the more track oriented edition.   All 916's offered incredibly well balanced handling compared to the competition of the day but none had great power below 5000 rpm and only really started to get "on the boil" @ around 7000 rpm.  The SP (and susequent SPS) were much more track oriented machines with more powerful engines and track componenets but were actually worse on the street than the strada due to their engine setup;  the SP/SPS didn't really exceed the performance of the strada until you got them over 8000 rpm which made them much harder to ride on the street.

Summary:  Good way to experience the 916.  Not as collectible as a SP or SPS but easier to live with if the intent is to ride it on the street. 

While the 916 was by design one of the finest handling machines of its time, two areas that came up as points of improvement where the rear suspension and the brake lines.   This particular 916 appears to be equipped with an Ohlin's rear shock which is good because it  was a big improvement over the standard Showa unit and helped to improve the ride quite a bit.  However the seller does not make any mention of the brake lines which were upgraded to braided steel in later versions so this might a question mark for this bike.

SUMMARY:  Looks good but might need to spend a few dollars to upgrade the brake lines.  Come to think of it, a full brake refresh would be a good idea.

Mileage is shown as 13626 miles which is less than 1000 a year, although I would be the majority of that came more than 10 years ago. The seller does note some scuffs and a few cracks but I don't see any evidence of the bike having been down and replacements are available via ebay.   Parts look to be mostly OEM with the exception of the exhaust, the SP style rear fairing and perhaps a tail tidy/license plate unit.

If not having perfect bodywork bothers you, prepare to spend money or look for a different bike.  Overall nothing that looks to impact performance.

The seller indicates fresh rubber and belts which has is good but also mentions a new clutch which might be an indication of more serious problems. The only issue I saw as the color of the fluid in the front brake fluid reservoir, although that might just be due to the lighting in the picture.

Here is what the seller has to say.

  • 12 k service done, new cam belt and plugs
  • new clutch EVR 12 tooth housing and plates.
  • new fuel pump
  • new Michelin Pilot tires
  • new factory air filters
  • New fuel tank release valves  
  • Recall 99v-360 rear axle spindle replacement done
  • Services done at Ducati dealer (have invoices) at 11,500 miles

SUMMARY:   Sounds good but a few questions, also it would be good to see the receipts.

As stated at the beginning of this post, given the year, model and condition this 916 is probably going to appeal more to someone who wants to ride it than to a collector.  Recent prices for these have ranged from $4,000 USD to $6,500 USD, although an under 2000 mile first year unit went for almost $19,000.   Based on the condition of this one, I would expect a price smack in the middle and this seems to be born out by the current bidding which is just a smidge under $5,000 USD with 3 days to go.


I think this is a good opportunity for someone who never got to experience the Ducati 916 to see what all the fuss was about.  It could also be a fun toy for a somewhat older rider to relive a bit of their youth.   While it won't appreciate in value dramatically, it will probably hold its current value at least which is a a tribute to Massimo Tamburini's design.  And yes, it still looks great so bringing it to bike night will still be fun...not many 20 year old bikes that can be said about.

Considering it's one of the most iconic motorcycles of the modern era, prices of Ducati's 916/996/998 are almost shockingly reasonable, although there are plenty of dogs and ex-race bikes out there that should be avoided unless you're handy with a wrench or have lots of room on your credit card. There's something for everybody, from higher-mileage riders to low-mileage garage queens and everything in between. The later bikes obviously offer more performance and even better handling, but it all started here, with Ducati's 916.

Under the skin, the 916 was an evolution of Ducati's successful 851/888 machines. The skin, however, was pretty much sex on wheels, with a slim waist, underseat exhaust pipes, and a distinctive single-sided swingarm that added weight but looked trick and made for easy wheel changes for anyone endurance-racing their bike... The 114 claimed horses seem pretty modest today considering a new Yamaha R6 is supposedly packing 122, but the Bolognese Bullet produces much more torque and makes all the expected Italian exotic noises.

Today's example is one of the nicest, most original bikes you're likely to find and is claimed to have been hand-built in Varese as a result of a fire at the Bologna facility that caused production to be temporarily shifted. I've no idea if that really makes it worth all that much over a Bologna-built bike, but the fact that it's a low-mile, original machine certainly makes it one for collectors, although the asking price is steep. I happen to like the older graphics as seen here, compared to the very plain font used on the 996 and 998 that followed.

While prices for the 916 have been relatively low for the past decade or so, that obviously can't continue indefinitely, and prices for pristine, low-mileage, or historically significant examples have been on the rise. How long will it take for values to reach the $18,590 Buy It Now this seller is asking? Hard to say, but I can bet that, at some point, folks are going to be wishing they'd picked up a nice example and put it on display in their living room...
